What's great about it: Very easy set up, extremely easy to add household computers What's not so great: Too many flashing lights, seems to be standard now a days
"I read many reviews before purchasing today, I had no issues what so ever during installation and the expansion of my network. I am not experienced in any way, I just followed the setup wizard. I removed the old router, replaced with the new, set up security (never could figure this out on the old systems). All worked fine, was fully up and running with 3 laptops within an hour, including wire placement to keep the family happy. Follow the instructions and I am sure you will have no issues, by the way it was on both XP & Vista... Good luck..."

What's not so great: Limited Wireless Compatibility WPA porblems & Re-Login
"Multiple issues with the WNR-3500 V1 First there are two hardware versions V1 & V2 this review is for V1
Setup & changes are done via built in Web pages. However you can only change settings on one page at a time, then sit and wait 60-seconds for the router to save and reboot itself. Setup and changes can be very slow and frustrating, especially when troubleshooting problems.
The Wireless router does not work well at all with Apple Products. The router will intermittently reject Macbook Pro when connecting via WPA / WPA2. If Macbook Pro is suspended, the router will drop access requiring another manual login. The WNR-3500 V1 will not accept a login from an older PowerBook G4 using WPA / WPA2, even with the router set to slowest connect speed, access control disabled, and locked on specific channel. The PowerBook G4 is used for traveling and works quite well with other wireless routers.
After running into the WIreless connection problems, I have found that others are having problems with computers that do not use Netgear cards.
Planning on returning to store and buying a different brand."

What's great about it: QOS, not much more What's not so great: DHCP server has major bug. Fiirewall is flawed.
"I've been through this with Netgear tech support for days. They finally replaced the unit. Same problem. A DHCP renewal request is always denied by their DHCP server (you can't control the lease period). Check your Windows event log. You'll see it if you have this router. Doesn't matter if it's XP or Vista. The DHCP server always returns a DHCPNack. Rules are that when you receive a DHCP Nack you must drop your IP address and ask for another which is exactly what Windows does. So twice a day, all computers lose their IP address for a few seconds. Connections break. Backups fail. Many reports on the Internet. It's logged to their support site as user incidents but their tech support people deny anyone else has the problem. Even when you pass along the URLs to their own site!! Want to talk about incompetent tech support while at it?
Someone here blamed people who claim they get dropped at times for not knowing how to configure their router. No, the router causes connection losses.
Today I'm buying a Linksys.
Also port forwarding is pretty weak and limited. Can't do multiple port ranges and you are restricted to about 10 forwards. Without multiple ranges that can get used up pretty quickly.
Firewall is unimpressive. It keeps reporting that Google servers are doing denial of service attacks on me. Right. I requested documentation on what attacks the router blocks. They don't make this available. So it may be sub par as a firewall or they'd boast about what it does. I get a lot of false alerts in the logs. It tells me I'm attacking myself every single time I do a simple FTP to an external server. This router was not very well tested.
And these are just the things I've noticed."

What's great about it: Seems like a great QoS router, direct access to firmware updates What's not so great: Slow setup, buggy admin interface makes static IP impossible
"I do computer systems and network engineering for a living, so my problems are not because of a misconfiguration. I really wanted to like this router, but it just doesn't work.
While they tried to make it look cool and gave it useless blinking lights, the thing feels lighter than air and quite cheap.
I initially attempted to set this up manually as I normally do. However after assigning my static IP it bricked on me. So I hit the reset pin and used the setup program on the CD. It took over 30 minutes just to get the router setup in the most basic configuration, all in all very lame.
After the initial setup it worked great with its default settings. However I absolutely do not want UPnP or the built-in DHCP server (I have my own DHCP server or use static IPs). Anytime you make even a basic change the whole router resets and drops the network connection, and takes forever to come back online.
Even this would be forgivable if the router didn't just stop working inexplicably, typically after disabling the DHCP server or assigning a static IP address to the WAN port (I have a registered IP and domain name).
The problem is obviously in the web admin interface writing a bad config back to the router, which means that this problem can't be solved until a future firmware upgrade is issued. In any case it doesn't work as I need it to so it is going back to the store.
I know remember why I stopped buying Netgear years ago."

What's great about it: Design What's not so great: Performance, Range
"I purchased this product hoping to improve my wireless range on my wireless-G laptop where the router is in the first floor and my laptop is placed in my bedroom which is in the second floor to the farthest right. I had a netgear wireless-G router which gave me a "Poor" to "Fair" wireless range, and disappointingly this router gives me the same signal strength inspite of it boasting of 8 internal antennas (I am running it on 300mbps, channel 6, 10 and WPA-PSK (TKIP)). It doesnt improve wireless signals for G devices. You have to get a N based card/adapter to get above average signal strength. Might return the router soon and my last option is the "Apple Airport Extreme N base station"."

What's great about it: SPEED, SPEED, SPEED What's not so great: nothing yet
"I've put off upgrading from my old linksys G router for some time now. That set-up was a complete nightmare. This one was a piece of cake and complete within an hour. I read through the reviews on Best Buy before purchasing and can confirm that if you follow the installation CD you should not have any problems with the install. We have a couble of old desktops that are hard wired that now scream with speed. The gaming members of my family are very pleased. The wireless laptop group while limited to their onboard capabiliities are just as happy due to the steady strong signal. No more drops. I would highly recommend this product."

What's great about it: Access point right out of the box and signal easily reaches three floors of house What's not so great: Trouble getting WPA2 to work
"Buy this router for a friend to add wireless to his 3 story home. The home has wired connections only. With the help of a crossover cable, the WNR3500 works as an access point right out of the box. Use WPA[TKIP] and no broadcast for security."

Quality connection08/18/2009
By Kobefrom Chicago, IL
What's great about it: No dropped connections What's not so great: Web interface is dated; but works.
"After trying other routers like the Linksys simultaneous duel band (a big disappointment) and Belkin (poor quality), I tried this one. With 8 internal antennas it creates a strong consistent connection.
My old router had a problem: I was trying to transfer a 30gb file from a network harddrive to a computer and the connection would drop.
This is the only router I could find that could manage the connection without disruption. My laptop went from 54mbps to 144mbps.
The only downside would be the dated web interface. However, it works and it's not complicated; they kept it simple."

Tried three other routers - This one won08/16/2009
By Scerickfrom Salt Lake City
What's great about it: Easy to set up for me - advanced user - didnt try software. What's not so great: Nothing so far.
"I have tried the similarly priced Linksys and D-Link models and they could just not hold a candle to this router. The linksys would constantly freeze up, dropping wired and wireless connections while the D-Link had poor signal strength in my apartment complex.
After setting up this Netgear - in 3 days I have had no signal drops, no router lock ups, and no lag spikes when playing Killzone 2, Halo 3, or World of Warcraft. This thing apparently has 8 internal antennas - after trying the lower settings (154mpbs which is apparently neighbor friendly) with average performance I decided to bump it up to the 300 mpbs setting. This was then the wireless performance started to shine. While no router will get 300mpbs period (so it's a little misleading) my laptop was connecting at 150mpbs and my PS3 at a full 54mpbs simultaneously over the wifi.
I read some of the other reviews about how this router drops wireless and all that - possibly because they neglected to turn the router to the 300mpbs mode - but it seems none of the manufacturers are releasing a solid high performance router out of the gate that all need a firmware upgrade. I am pleased to say that with the most current firmware this router does great. Throughput in other reviews is apparently lower than some of it's competition but they are also much much more expensive. With ping times <50 over wifi I can't complain."

What's great about it: Everything What's not so great: Nothing
"*** IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A NEW WIRELESS ROUTER THATS FAST AND EASY TO SETUP, DON'T LOOK AT ANYTHING ELSE!!! ***
I have over 10+ years of networking and computer experience under my belt and by far this is one of the fastest routers for home use I've ever used and if that hasn't peeked your interest so far this one has been one of the easiest routers I've ever setup. Between me and my family I've setup over 5 of these things for them and it gets even easier.
For those of you who say you have tech/net/comp experience and have problems with this product I'm not sure if your in the right business, because truthfully since switching from Linksys to Netgear back when Cisco took over Linksys I've never looked back, the switch has been amazing. I've tried pretty much every brand of home use networking equipment and this is by far the easiest I've ever used. I would love to list everything that I've owned but its just too much to list.
I wouldn't recommend anything else."

What's great about it: Distance, Speed, Looks, Over All Perfect What's not so great: Nothing. There are bright lights but you can turn them off.
"I've had two linksys systems. The first one worked good and lasted me a year or so. So then I bought the new Linksys N Rangeplus Router but that one broke in two months of use. That pruduct didn't even go near as far and fast as this Netgear router. This is my first Netgear and so far I love it. Best Router on the Market. 10x better than Linksys. Like I said there are bright lights but you can turn them off, but it is a good light show at night. Over All Best Router I've had Yet. I would recommend this to everyone. Oh! and works great for Xbox360s and Macs."

Very fast router07/20/2009
By lakesidecafrom sandiego, ca
What's great about it: Fast, sleek looking, a great upgrade from wireless g What's not so great: setup can cause a few headaches
"I wanted to upgrade the speed and performance of my network to wireless N and gigabit technology. Netgear delivered on both of these. This router is sleek and good looking lots of lights. Its speed is amazing to say the least. I was running 56 wireless g, but only getting a fraction of that actual speed. Now I am running about 108mps on my wirless n devices. I upgraded my desk top nic cards as well to gigabit nic cards. The wired Gigabit side of this router is super fast when combined with the gigabit nic card.
Setup is the downside of this router. It took me about 3 hours to get it functioning properly. Mind you I have a lot of experience in network setups and computers in general. The router comes with a setup cd, which trys to analyze your network setup and activate the router accordingly. After several attempts setup could not recognize my internet connection. The only documentation for this device is in the setup cd ( I would always prefer written manual to cd). Bottom line I had to set up the device manually via the http://10.0.0.1 interface. Here are my key learnings from this setup
1. If upgrading to a new router, make sure to power down your devices in order, router-cable modem- computer
2. After reconnecting new devices make sure to power up in this order cable modem (may need to reset to clear previous settings) -router - computer.
3. Follow setup cd if everything self detects you should be gold, If internet connection isnt found, complete setup as though it is.
4. login at http://10.0.0.1/ (admin, password) escape out of update router for now, click setup wizard top left corner. Follow screens and all should be gold after that.
The big thing is not to get hung up on whether the software automatically detects all the pieces of your network which is what threw me for a loop. The http interface has its own setup wizard."

Difference between WNR2000 and WNR3500007/20/2009
By Babyblue2209from Texas
What's great about it: WNR2000 has strong signal bars What's not so great: WNR2000's Wireless Access LIst don't work
"I bought WNR2000 yesterday at Best Buy for $86 +. I was about to give up and return the darn thing because I couldn't get it to work right with my computer. It flip out when I try to setup the Wireless Access List. If I set it for 54mbps. I guess it's better when I switch it to 300mbps even though all my adapters runs only 54mbps. We'll see what tomorrow brings but this router is really expensive if it does not work right.
I was thinking about trying out the WNR3500. I don't know if anyone has any suggestions of what I should get. I don't play games, although I do have a Halo2 Xbox. I don't expect it to work with these routers because they are not compatible brands. I only stream TV and watching YouTube or CNN new or play arcade games online.
I don't know if I should stick with WNR2000 or should I get the WNR3500. Any advice would help. I know this is not advice forum but I just need some opinion. Thanks."

Router does not play nice with WGA600N07/14/2009
By Ganaganfrom Portland, OR
What's great about it: Installation was super easy What's not so great: Keeps resetting wireless network during media playback on X-Box MCE
"This seemed like a great router at first. The installation was a snap and I was back up on the network in 15 minutes. I was upgrading to N so I installed a Linksys WGA600N on my X-Box and a Belkin F5D8073 on my laptop at the same time. However, once I started using the X-Box Media Center Extender, about every 15 minutes or so, the wireless network would drop out for 10-15 seconds causing the X-Box MCE to reboot. One time when this happened, I was also using my laptop and it dropped off the network also. So I figured the problem had to be the router. I replaced the router with a dual band Linksys and everything works great. I would not recommend this router if you're planning to use the WGA600N with an X-Box."

What's great about it: Looks nice, works very well so far What's not so great: Had to install it manually
"I've just had it running for a few hours, so I can't speak to reliabilty but the initial out-of-the-box performance is very good and the unit looks quite spiffy with all the LED's.
Unfortunately the automatic install software could not see my IP address so it would not run - even though I was browsing web pages at the time! Fortunately, the install manual is very good and it was a piece of cake to do it manually."

Worked fine except wireless security06/07/2009
By djc11369from Upstate NY
What's great about it: Not sure What's not so great: Big, WPA didn't work for me, slow setup
"My 4 year Linksys router started dropping out intermittently so it was time to look for a new one. It's difficult to choose a good router based on specs alone and I try not to just go with the same brand I had as a lot can change in a name. Most reviews for this unit seemed to favor it over the Linksys I was considering. The first impression when I took it out of the box was it looks nice but it is big compared to the Linksys. I started reviewing the setup instructions using a Mac but it's not as easy just using the cd with Windows and the instructions were instructing you with screenshots like you were using Windows. So I went to the pc and the setup with the cd was pretty easy but it took at least twenty minutes for it to configure the router. Once it was done however I couldn't connect any of my devices using WPA2 security. I removed security and it connected just fine. Thinking this was odd I checked their support for the device and it says if you have problems connecting with WPA to drop it to WEP. WEP isn't as secure as WPA and my 4 year old Linksys could do WPA2. I couldn't believe this was their answer to an obvious problem and didn't bother checking WEP. I took it back and got the Linksys WRT310N and it was setup in literally under 5 minutes using WPA2. For the positive I guess it was fast but so is the Linksys, I guess it just didn't work for me."
