What's great about it: price, hard drive, size,
What's not so great: picture quality, night recording is terrible
"I had a sony hi8 which had more features then this camera, the picture quality is not as good as the Hi8, and if you record in the dark it is really streaky. I wish i purchased the sony. I used it at disney world in the hi quality mode. it holds about nine hours which was more than enough for 8 days. I guess i'm stuck with this for now."

What's great about it: Lightwieght, easy to use, holds a ton
What's not so great: No lighting, still pictures are grainy, software
"This is the first Camcorder I have ever owned. It is great in the ease of use. Video quality is good, not great, but good. Incredible zoom and I love the way you can set the volume to zoom in also. However some of the pictures turned out looking grainy (has anyone else experienced this?) and I have had them printed twice by two different companies. And if you "capture" a picture from the video- well good luck. Low light feature still doesn't really help. Think I will try getting an exterior flash. But overall I am happy with it! I would recommend to anyone who needs ease of use or just the basic camcorder."

What's great about it: Ease of use, nice photo picture quality, very light, small, controls are easy to get to, the instructions are right.
What's not so great: I would like a better video picture but since I can't afford a Hi def, I'm satisified with this one
"I bought another brand and the operating manual was a nightmare. The picture quality was terrible also. I took it back two days later and got this Panasonic. I was using it from the moment I got it home. It was super easy to understand the Operating Instructions and I had no trouble making a video and taking pictures. I like the different manual settings and they're easy to understand. The 40 gig H/D is super for video's and I bought a 2 gig SD card and I'll use that for photo's. I found the picture quality was very good on the Panasonic. I have an 8 megapixel digital so I'm used to good photo's and these are good enough that I can live with them. They're not large, but they're a perfect size for the internet."

What's great about it: Easy menus to navigate
What's not so great: Too many to list here.
"I was extremely dissapointed with the video quality. I even had it set to record at XP (best). I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that the quality looked like I was using a VHS!
Apart from the substandard video quality, i didn't like the fact that you can't simply connect the camcorder to the TV for playback. You have to remove the battery from the camcorder, and connect the AC adapter to your wall jack, to the Camcorder, then to the TV.
I don't like that it doesn't have a built in light.
No wrist strap included.
I'm returning the camcorder to Best Buy today. Gonna spend a little more and get myself a nice high def camcorder instead."

"I did a lot of reseach before I bought a camcorder and I am glad that I chose this one. It is very easy to use, is well built, and makes good quality home movies. It also feels really good in your hand and is light so it isn't a hassle to use for a long period of time."

Good camera; easy to use

What's great about it: small, large hard drive, no tapes! lightweight, awesome zoom
What's not so great: no eyepiece, VideoCam Suite SUCKS!, poor low light shots, no firewire (only usb and rca)
"I am transferring about 30 tapes to my computer and love that this camera uses hard drive. I've used it for two weeks now and enjoy the ease of use. It is light, compact, and fun to use. BestBuy honored the on-line sale price and free tripod. Zoom is great, especially on the tripod. Always enjoy the steady shot w/ Panasonic.
And now for the negs: can't save battery life by closing the viewfinder and using the eyepiece- there IS NO eyepiece. I'm old-fashioned, even at 28, and I like to look at my subjects through the eyepiece. I would often flip their older cameras around so babies can see themselves and I can still see my shot through the eyepiece. And it's easier to block out the sun when looking through the eyepiece. Could have spent more on another but would have veered from Panasonic, who has been great over the years to me. Own surround sound, digital cameras, camcorders, TV, and almost all other electronics through Panasonic.
Also, VideoCam closes down on me about 6 times throughout my use of it. Very poor and, in my opinion, slow. To make great movies, you need another program to build transitions- I use Pinnacle Studio. And disappointed in Panasonic for sticking with the trend of no firewire port to computer, only USB. Pinnacle can read firewire but I guess there's a version of USB as well. Wish I didn't have to buy so many aftermarket programs.
And where's the eyepiece?!?!
Overall, I appreciate the price and ease of use and getting what I pay for. If you're thinking about this camera, go ahead and get it. It'll do you good, especially at this price!"

"So far it has been a great camcorder. I upgraded from a mini DV camcorder, and I think it's great I don't have to have miniDV pilling up in my closet. and the ease I will have to share my videos with family and friends.
Very small camcorder, which makes it easy to take video for a long time without getting tired. Great quality. I have not had an issue with it so far.....
I totally recommend it!"

"As far as the camera goes I consider it an excellent purchase; I have shot pictures and videos indoors and outdoors in bright light down to moderate light and never had an issue at all. The pictures and videos come out well and are of good quality.
However, the only way to get the images and videos off of the camera are with the software that ships with it and it is a horrible piece of software. Fortunately once you get the images onto your hard drive you can use a decent video editing software package to actually manipulate the videos."

What's not so great: Very Very Bad Indoor Usage
"The product itself seemed good when demod to me at the store. The problem is that there is no light on the camera. In the store, there is ample lighting so all images were great. Any indoor footage in a normal setting cannot be seen without a camera light to compensate for low lighting. Any person looking to film indoors, which is generally everyone, will not be able to use this camera indoors. Not very practicle. A waste of product. Returned camera. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!"

Bad Video Quality

"I purchased this coming from the pro tv broadcast world. We have run Panasonic cam's at work for 10+ years with DVC Pro and as of the past fall P2. The quality has been great. Read reviews and bought the SDR-H40P and have been let down immensly! Yes, it is so much nicer than the Sony HI-8 it was replacing - I can hook it up USB2 to my iMac (Intel Duo Core) w/ OS X 10.5 and using iMovie 2008 (2006 doesn't see the camera) quickly ingest video to the iMac. ( THAT IS WHAT I WANTED). However the video quality is just awful. I mean BAD AWFUL. Like totally OUT OF FOCUS. In the pro/tv world it would be like zooming in on a subject, focus, then zoom out and TOTALLY OUT OF FOCUS ( which is called BACKFOCUS ). I have read more reviews and people say the video quality is great. Either it is because I work in broadcast TV and this thing sucks, or my camera has a problem. I recorded my sons band concert the other night in a high school auditorium and the shot ( I shot in 16x9 ) looks like the lens was smeared with vasoline. It is just about useless. I am very disapointed with this camera - not the operation - love that - but in2008 I expect MUCH better video quality. What I have is just rotten."

What's not so great: no viewer, so if your display screen is turned around you cannot see what you are recording
"I really like this digital camcorder. It is so much lighter and smaller than the one we got 5 years ago. I am glad that we don't have to mess with tapes or discs. We just turn it on and go. We did buy a larger memory card so when on vacation, it'll hold more. Overall, it is great and easy to use!"

"I never wrote a review before but this camcorder almost forced me to write one ..I have it for almost 6 months and absolutely love it...I did an in depth research on camcorders before I purchased this one...Previously I had a Sony...which was comparatively ok..but after having the panasonic I guess i payed for the brand name when I purchased my last one...this is just awesome...picture quality is far superior...the best thing is video transfer...it transferrred 6 hrs of video within 15 mins..mind blowing...and no more hassel with tapes ..some people have complained about the the fact that it does not have a light...my previous camcorder had a built in light...and guess what it never came in use...comparatively panasonic's picture quality is so crisp that i never felt the need of a light...Panasonic rules...I am so much in love with it that now whatever brand I buy I would prefer a panasonic all the way...."

"Nice and easy to handle by your palm, no tapes or discs recorded 40 gbs. plus replaceble SD Memory card about the size of postage stamp. Lonnnngggg Zooommmm were very accurate to with the help of advanced OIS, so far i all the footage i shoot was really clear and more on realistic images, highly recommended for first time buyer and traveler and of course for all the occasions and important memories you wanna keep."

"Our family needed something to record the first few month of our sons' life so that daddy wouldn't miss out on everything while on deployment. I have shot mainly indoors with little problem in our sunless apartment. I found it easy to switch modes from recording to still photos. Downloading was simple enough and I haven't had any problems with the software that it came with. My only beef with this product (and a small beef at that) is that there is no baby mode setting that allows for not only the date of which something was shot but after just once entering baby's bday it tells how old baby is. However for the price and quality of the product... that is a very small complaint. I'd recomend this to any who asked about it."

"Hi there, any one who want o buy this camera and he is hesitate with it , i can tell him to go ahead and buy it , its perfect cam with really good resolution and zoooooom , its can record 9 hours with perfect resolution and it can record 40 hours with normal zoon so can you imagin that you get rid of all the taped and DVD, and the really nice thing is the small size !! no body can tell that you carry camcorder if you give him the back of your hand the its hold the cam , the last word about this camera
