Better than all my friends' GPS units!

What's great about it: Function - it just works.
What's not so great: No trip odometer; Sometimes it chooses a weird route; Has trouble around new and ongoing construction
"This was the best Christmas present ever. We wanted a GPS with a wide screen, that would say both the turn-by-turn directions AND the name of the road and locations (which many GPS units do not do). However, we had no desire to pay for frilly features that we wouldn't use, such as traffic (not available in our area), blue tooth, or internet access. The Nuvi 260W seems to have everything we want and nothing we don't. I am hopeless with directions, and since getting it for Christmas 2008, I have used it so often, and it has been amazing. The voice is easy to understand, even when it mispronounces some road names. My hubby and I have even taken it with us on hikes, and it's great because we can see how far we went and exactly where we were. We haven't yet needed it, but we've also thought that if we ever want to walk on unfamiliar trails that aren't well marked, the blue "where we've been" line would help us find our way back if we ever got lost! The only feature I can think of that I wish it had is a trip odometer. There is only one "trip log," and all you can see is a blue line with where you've been, so there's no way to use it to track how far you've come on a specific trip. We wish there was a more meaningful way to access the Trip Log so that, for example, when we went on a hike we could see how far we walked and how long it took us."

What's not so great: it quit on me
"I have had this nuvi since Christmas and had good luck with it until three weeks ago. I turned it on and it quit on me. Nothing. No maps, no screen, nothing. I went on line to try to fix it but after the man hung up while it was downloading, Garmin had a problem on thier website. I took it back to Bestbuy and the gentleman there said that was the second one that he had seen in two weeks. He proclaimed it dead. I received a refund and now I am without a GPS. They don,t carry this item at the store level and the website is out of stock."

A little buggy

What's great about it: Fairly easy to enter addresses - recalculations are quick
What's not so great: Acquiring Satellites process is very poor - Needs User Interface improvements
"This product has been a big disappointment to me. The major concerns are related to the Acquiring Satellites process that can, at times, take 15-20 minutes to complete. I highly suggest logging in right away and updating your software. It seems to respond a little better, but still not acceptable, after the upgrade. I typed a search term for a specific business and, after 30 minutes of "thinking" it still did not have an answer for me. The other problem is that the favorites and recent addresses lists often show entries in Chinese characters. The User Interface could use help as well so a more logical route to your menu screen or search results could be obtained. The bigger screen and street name voice prompts are nice features. If you miss a turn, the recalculation assumes correctly, that you are not going to pull a u-turn and quickly provides an alternate route."

What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: doesn't have complete listings in map book
"This GPS was one of the top 10 listed in consumer reports magazine. I got a really good price so decided to buy it for my husband, who is a truck driver and references a map book constantly. This GPS is easy to use but doesn't list all, long established streets. Three times this week he has had to use his map book. I would not recommend this GPS for someone who needs it for everyday use."

What's great about it: Easy to use right out of the box.
What's not so great: No AC adapter included.
"The Garmin Nuvi 260w GPS system is a really nice product. Nice text to speech feature. Good re-routing feature as well. Nice QWERTY keyboard makes typing a breeze. The wide screen is easy to see and quite clear. This system has a choice of different voices that you can set up for your listening pleasure. You can also view pictures on the display if you have an SD media card. This is my first GPS system and I am very happy with it."

What's great about it: This is a good purchase if you are moving to a new state or you do a lot of traveling around your area to find addresses
What's not so great: The price was a little high
"This product is great for finding the majority but not all major sites. Sometime you may have to look up a specific point of interest online and then put it into the GPS. Overall I love it. I just moved to a new state and it has been helping me find my way around."

Good, basic GPS

What's great about it: I really like the fact that it announces street names. It's also easy to use. There's no learning curve.
What's not so great: No QWERTY keyboard. Also at times it takes too long to find the satellite
"I wanted an inexpensive GPS navigator that announced street names. I liked the TomTom better because it had the QWERTY keyboard, but I tried 2 and had problems with both TomToms synching to my MacBook. Garmin was recommended. I really miss the QWERTY keyboard. I HATE the ABC keyboard. I can never find the letters. In order to get that with Garmin, you must pay a lot more to get the Nuvi 760. I wish Garmin would offer an upgrade so one can get the QWERTY keyboard."

Best Buy for the Money

What's great about it: Easily seen anywhere in the car.
What's not so great: Difficulty downloading free map update.
"We love the Nuvi 260W. It is easily read from all seats in the car. It announces street/route names very clearly. A frustrating feature is that we cannot load a hotel into the trip itinerary if we are not relatively close to the intended destination."

Save Gas - Buy GPS
09/15/2008
By Penney

What's great about it: Easy to use, Reliable, Portable, Has saved me time and money.
What's not so great: Sometimes takes too long to find sattlelite when adding an address while driving.
"I'm very happy with my purchase. I do wish I had purchased a higher priced model with traffic delay reports, but you get what you pay for. I travel around a lot and I would guess that this GPS has paid for itself in the last 6 months in time saved and gas money spent going the best route rather than driving around the popular routes. It was most helpful when I was driving a route I had mapquest directions for. I was in another state and using both the printed directions and the GPS when I came upon road constructions with no clear detour. The printed directions were then useless, but my Garmin Nuvi 260W found the way. The only issue I've noticed is that if you plug in a new go to address while driving it can take a long time to search. Overall, I love it. It is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time."

"This item is great we were re-routed because of an accident on the QEW going up for our yearly vacation . In Canada there isnt a lot of "other ways" to get anywhere but this unit got us back on track in about a half hour which i thought was great considering how far up in canada we were."

What's great about it: Easy to use, great visability, nice options.
What's not so great: If you do not register the product online in two months it reboots and erases favorites.
"This product is really a great product. Its rather durable (I should know, dropped mine three times and still going strong!) and has a night time driving option for the light. I looked at every other device there and only the Garmin series of devices are easily readable. (some that i looked at had red roads with a pink backdrop and made it hard to see the route.) I used this for my dedicated delivery route and it made it easy to learn where I was going and helped me find a new route when there was construction. Only down side is if you want the top of the line options you have to extra for them, you also must update the maps every so often and that costs money as well. Other wise great value."

Great Unit for Navi & Photos!
09/08/2008
By Coopers2boys

What's great about it: Easeof use, programming, expansion, display, widshield mount
What's not so great: price with out bluetooth
"This item was purchased for just basic navigation features, and WOW was this Garmin feature packed! It doesn't come with bluetooth, but that was not the intent of our purchase. The bad, for the money you might be able to find another unit that offers bluetooth for the money, not a garmin, and not as nice a unit, but with bluetoopth non the less. The good: Amazing display and ease of use. We are not techy people and this unit was really easy to set up and use, straight out of the box! It has made navigating the area so easy and the points of interest (POI) so easy for us to find restaurants and shopping! It even gave us the phone number so we would call ahead! How cool! The windshield mount it 100 times better than our old Magellan, and this is a lot better for us (non-techy people). The photo viewer is increadible too! Just slide in a memory car and check out your favorite pfotos and take them along with you to show off! We love that to show friends and family the grat photos of our kids! Overall this is a MUST HAVE for anyone who wants a feature packed basice navigation unit and does not require bluetooth! We put in the Europe maps form Garmin and it worked perfectly on our trip to Europe this summer! LOVE THIS THING!"

What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: none yet
"This is my 1st GPS and I am very impressed. I didn't need anything with extras just a simple GPS with text to speach. With 2 young kids causing enough distractions I didn't need to add another to the mix. Registering with the PC is easy. I just plugged it in and then turned the computer on. Found it right away. If this is your 1st Garmin product you will need to download one of their products. You will have to close your browser to complete the installation. I also ran into a problem because Active X was not turne on but Garmin's site gave intructions on how to fix. I think total install & registration time was about 10 min. Also don't waste money on another UPS cable. If you have a digital camera it will more than likely fit this. The main reason for getting this was out trip to CA. The last two times we flew into San Francisco I always got lost trying to get out of the city an up to Sanoma. I've used google maps and mapquest and got lost. (Getting lost usually added 1 hr to our trip which was already a 3 hr drive after a 6 hr flight from CT - CA.) Didn't get lost this time and got out of the city no problem."

What's great about it: Accurate, Voice Guidance with Street Names
"We recently moved across country & purchased the Garmin prior to our trip. Came in handy looking for restaurants & hotels along the Interstate. Helps us get around in our new hometown. Best Buy hard wired the power cord & we use the windshield suction cup mount which allows easy, safe viewing and the ability to remove the unit quickly & easily. Anti glare screen allows clear viewing on bright sunny days. Solid construction. Maps seem accurate & up-to-date. Good value."

What's great about it: Announces Street Names, Re-directing, Big 4.3 W Screen, Touch Screen
What's not so great: More voices to download like stewie from family guy or something other than jill
"What a product ! I'd always be using mapquest and maps and I will never ever be without this nuvi again when I am taking trips. 4.3" Touch Screen. Spend the extra $ for this model instead of the 200w because with this model you don't have to take the eyes off the road, because Jill announces all street names and the distance to the turn. Also if you miss a turn, within 5 - 10 sec Jill automatically re-directs you on how to get to your destination. I purchased this at Best Buy on sale for $299, and its worth every penny, I look foward to going on the road now, if only gas were cheaper I'd enjoy this more. *Jill = voice guidance"

What's great about it: verbal and written instruction
What's not so great: This it not a big deal but if you put in the wrong password you have to hit the reset key.
"The Garmin nüvi 260W GPS is excellent. We purchased it and took the first trip to Washington DC and found it to be outstanding. We would have been totally lost without it. Navigating through DC with it was a breeze. We have used it numerous times since and think it is one of the best investments we have made. It works great with an address so put in as much data as possible before you leave. It can be a little picky identifing locations."

What's great about it: Easy set up, good signals, Nice screen size,
What's not so great: vice prompt was a little scratchy / some times
"I did a lot of research before my purchase of the Garmin Nuvi 260w GPS. I found that this is the best one for me and is easy to set up and get going right out of the box. I did not need all the bells and whistles. Just wanted a voice prompt and street names announced of course it offers a lot more. I just bought it (2) days ago and I was going to Gillette Stadium (New England Patriots Game) in Foxbourough, Mass. I had no idea how to get there. It was a 2 1/2 hour trip from where I live. I programed the address in and it took me right to the parking lot without any problems. I just listened to the voice prompts. I did look at the screen at times, but I really did not have to. When I had to go home I just touched home in the parking lot and It took me there as if I was on auto pilot. I just drove the car and listed. My wife was with me and she was against me purchasing it at first. But now that she has seen how good it performs and easy it is to use, she wants to us it now. I would recommend this to everyone and enjoy it as I am. I will never get lost again or make a wrong turn, now that I have this."
