What's great about it: great with everything, reads mp3 & mp3 CD's excellent
What's not so great: CD eject mechanism scratches CD's

"This stereo is great! it plays from mp3 players & CD's great, categorizes mp3 folders neatly, & has great sound quality (even with the radio). The only downside is the CD eject mechanism scratches CD's badly."

What's great about it: Decent Sound, iPod Capability
What's not so great: No way to quickly roll through a list on the iPod; functionality is not intuitive.

"I bought this unit specifically to use my iPod in the car with better sound and ease of use than with an FM receiver.

NOTE: Think twice before getting rid of your car units that include cassette. Having that old analog cassette allows you to easily hook up an iPod, Discman or any other audio device with a headphone mini plug all for the cost of a cassette adapter for under $20.

The one major function that does not appear to exist in the Pioneer 4000UB, is the ability to quickly roll/ scroll through the lists on the iPod using either the head unit or the remote.

I have a new 16 gig nano which isn't even maxed out and already I have almost 3,000 songs, around 300 or so artists and albums and almost two dozen playlists. Imagine trying to select a song like Let It Be, that begins with a middle letter of the alphabet, among 3,000, when the only ways to get through the list are to either turn the main Multi-Control knob, which at best advances less than 10 items per turn or continue to tap the button up and down going one song at a time until you get there or doing the same single item tap using the remote! It takes forever. Even lookiing for songs through the artists or albums I'm still tapping endlessly or twisting the knob many many times, all this while driving at the same time.

There should be an easy way to just roll through quickly, either by holding the Multi-Control knob up or down or holding the arrows on the remote, but it doesn't work that way. I reveiwed the manual since this seems like an obvious "must have" feature, but nowhere does it address being able to do this. I called Pioneer tech support and they told me it can't do this; the ways I just described above are the only options for searching out what you want!

So, if you are like me and mainly want a unit to listen to your iPod and you have even a moderate number of songs, albums and artists, you should know that there is NOT a convenient, fast way to get where you want to go.

Other than this I am getting used to most of the non intuitive features, but this to me is a MAJOR usage flaw. All things being equal, if I had known this before and it came down to this unit verses a comparably priced unit with similar sound and functionality AND the ability to get through lists faster, I'd go with the other unit. Again, the ONLY reason I bought this was to use my iPod in the car and get decent sound.

The guy at Pioneer TS only looked at the manual as well and told me that functionality doesn't exist, so if any of you who own or know this unit have figured out a better way to roll/ scroll/ search, PLEASE let me know!

Thanks!"

What's great about it: USB, 3x Pair RCA imputs
What's not so great: Audio Menu(need to get used to), no Pause/Mute/ATT on unit. Ipod Interface isnt to my personal liking.

"Hello fellow BestBuy customers, my 1st review here.
The reason I love this unit is that it has 2 AUX imputs
(the product specs says it has only 1 in the front) has one in the back as well. As well as the 3 Pairs of RCA Inputs for AMPs. USB interface for Flash Drives, iPod, Walkman, etc.
The fact that it says you need a USB device cable is only stating if u have say a USB Double DIN size Pioneer, for your iPod Video, because it has A/V cables on it as well to play videos.
- Knowing that you can use the cable that comes with your iPod for the computer's USB port (for Audio Playback)
- Does not Currently work for the new Nano, 3G Phone
(not sure about old Phone and the Touch)
The fact that it has 3 pairs of RCA Inputs is great! I currently have 4 3-way pioneer six inch speakers in my vehicle, powered by a 50watt amp using 2 Pairs, and I have 1 more input to put a subwoofer!
Also, i love the amout of audio customization you can do! Bass-Midtone-Treble adjustment
High pass filter (especially if you have an un-amplified system and need to turn off that ugly bass distortion at higher volumes set it to 50)
The presets it comes with are great too
(super bass+powerful+vocal are very nice)
I'm going to wrap this up.
Happy Jamming!"

What's great about it: Adverised Features
What's not so great: Says it works with IPOD...Just not mine

"Easy to turn on and move from source to source. Even the clock was hard to set...can't wait to put in my preset Radio channels. Shutting off the unit did not go according to directions. I bought this unit because I would be able to control my IPOD. HOWEVER, nowhere except in the booklet did it specify 5th generation Ipod...which excludes mine. If I was only going to use the AUX for the IPOD I could have bought the DEH-2000MP for a whole lot less. NOT HAPPY...BUYER BEWARE...unit is nice but the it may have features you don't need"

Sounds Great   08/27/2008
By Gotfurkids from WI

What's great about it: Controls iPod out of the box (no 'adapters' needed), great sound, looks great
What's not so great: Menus & setup a bit frustrating, some car models need a special adapter

"All I wanted was a stereo with the front aux jack so I could plug in my iPod. This is so much better; not only can I plug my iPod into this, but it charges it and I control the iPod from the stereo unit, unlike a most other "iPod ready" units out there now. Beware: if you have a newer GM model car with a stock stereo, expect to pay $80-$130 extra for a dumb little adapter thing. I was shocked, thinking I could have an aftermarket stereo installed, plus wires and harness for about $200. Nope, came to $320 with that adapter.

But anyways, after having this stereo for less than a day so far, I love how it sounds, as I've never heard my iPod music through my car speakers (stock) in such clarity (I've been using an FM transmitter--useless if you ask me). Its fairly easy to use--just plug in the iPod and select your source and its ready to go. When you shut the car off it turns your iPod off and resumes from the same spot when you turn the car back on. It even has handsfree Bluetooth connection with your phone (with an optional adapter that I wasn't aware was sold seperately, ugh). The CD player is pretty obvious and I haven't tried the aux yet but I imagine that will be similar to the iPod and CD funcions. Oh, and beware you cannot control anything from you iPod unless you have a Nano. Not sure why you'd need to but I guess some people might prefer it or maybe their passenger would use it, who knows.

My only complaint (so far) is that the menus and programming are confusing, even with the manual. I unknowingly told it to program all of the local radio signals into my 6 presets, effectively erasing the ones I had already programmed (which was pretty simple) and now for whatever reason I can't seem to re-program over the ones it put in. The flow of the menus definitely takes some getting used to, but I think once I get everything the way I want it, all will be good.

Overall, I'm very happy to have it, I wouldn't choose any other stereo in this price range."

What an upgrade!   06/03/2008
By Nemos1271 from Chicago, IL.

What's great about it: Looks good and sounds even better.
What's not so great: None found yet

"Wow! ... and that's an understatement. I purchased this unit after looking around quite awhile for an upgrade of my stock stereo and I must say I made a great choice (with the help of my local Best Buy associate).
First off, the unit looks great. No "over-the-top" lights, switches or dials, just a straight forward looking receiver that has just enough "flash" to get noticed... elegance in a car stereo.
Second, the sound is amazing. Granted, it's replacing a stock unit but the difference is like night and day... even with my stock speakers. I wanted a head unit that could take full advantage of my iPod and I wasn't disappointed. Being able to control my iPod through the stereo was a must for me and this unit does all I need it to do without being so confusing that you need an engineering degree to figure it out. The "Advanced Sound Retriever" feature on this stereo makes the compressed music files sound just like a CD... no "muted" sound out of your iPod with this unit. Another plus is that, although it states in the description that you need an adapter for your iPod, there is no need to purchase anything else if you use the charging (USB) cable that came with your iPod. It's already got the cable from the head unit that you just plug your iPod's USB cable into and you're good to go.
The controls on the unit will be a little daunting when you first use this stereo but with a little practice, you'll be a pro in no time.
The remote control is another bonus. I must admit that when I first bought this I thought "Who needs a remote control in a car?" but it really is more useful than I first thought... no more reaching forward to change things while driving is a major advantage.
Bottom line... you want an elegant-looking car stereo that sounds as good, if not better than it looks and doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Go with this little beauty, you won't be disappointed."

Great Value   05/12/2008
By MarcR from Frederick, MD

What's great about it: Great value, looks great, can load CD without flipping down faceplate
What's not so great: Dial knob is also a 4-way directional pad, difficult to locate settings the first time

"Just purchased this unit, and I love it. Great value, great features.

I love how it makes my new Pioneer speakers sound, even without an amp or sub. So many EQ settings, it sounds phenomenal, and given the right settings. it sounds like I have a sub (it lacks the kick, so I can't feel it, but the low bass tones are great)

One of the few things I can pick out to rag on, is the dial. It's a scroll wheel like you'd expect from looking at it; turn left for volume down, right for volume up, etc. But, it is also a 4 way directional pad, which kind of scares me. It's great, and very precise. But, given that it spins, and rotates and moves, I am concerned with its' reliability. Granted, if you get the service plan, they'll replace the whole unit if it breaks, yay :)
The only other thing, is it's slightly difficult to get to the initial settings, if you've never owned an after-market deck before. It's great, with lots of options. But it can be confusing for some.

But all in all, I love it, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone."

awesome radio   04/30/2008
By KennyF from Maryland

What's great about it: looks and sounds great in my car
What's not so great: a little hard to program with out referring to manual but that's what manuals are 4

"I bought this radio a few months after driving around with a stock head unit and speakers. I looked at radios for a week or so before purchasing this 1 after several best buy reps recommended it and i love it. It was a little difficult to program until i dug the manual out of the trash... lol! there isn't anything bad about this unit. It has all sorts of eq's to adjust the sound and my Ipod sounds great when i play it through the usb port (which came with the unit). I highly recommend this unit whether your looking to upgrade your headunit or your entire sound system. Either way it sounds great!"

Love It!   04/20/2008
By AronMan from DFW, Tx

What's great about it: Direct iPod interface keeps digital music digital!
What's not so great: The display is narrow and hard to see in bright light.

"First, I love this unit. It is exactly what I was looking for and it was totally the right price.
I had been connecting my iPod to my car stereo via a cassette deck adapter. Yuck. Nothing like rendering your digital music to analog for a quality sound, right? The Pioneer DEH-P4000UB provides a direct iPod link allowing access to your music, podcasts, audiobooks etc directly from the headunit while charging your iPod at the same time. Sweet!
I paired this purchase with Infinity speakers. Man-o-man!
The only thing I dislike about the unit - and really, it is a minor complaint - is that the display is small. It is difficult to glance and read. Also, it is very difficult to read it under bright conditions. The manner in which text is displayed is also annoying. My preference is that the unit continue to scroll ARTIST, SONG TITLE, and ALBUM in continuous fashion. Despite having enabled the EVERSCROLL function, it only scrolls one of these items. Never all three. If the unit actually has that functionality, I have been unable to figure it out - which would be another complaint, I guess.
Regardless, love it! My music never sounded so good!"

Another winner from Pioneer.   02/14/2008
By Wags from Chester NH

What's great about it: Adaptability, vast sound shaping options, great power.
What's not so great: All I can poke fun at is car the ever popular remote.

"Sorry but the remote thing always made me chuckle, common now for units to have them.

So, I could go on about all the features and potential interface formats, but you already know all that. What YOU want to know is... how good does it sound?

Well... select good speakers with a good frequency range, very low to very high, and a good subwoofer if you like- remember a head unit no matter how good can NOT make bad speakers sound good-

But with appropriate speakers? Just fantastic. Even unamplified there is plenty of juice for normal people. By normal I mean people who don't want sound waves to strip off their eybrows and cause deafness by 25.

With tons of sound shaping capabilities ranging from the standard equalizer to loudness settings to high and low pass filters etc? You can make whatever sound you desire, whatever appeals to you.

Total clarity, plenty powerful, totally customizable in terms of sound, and so much interfacing... You might find some stereos out there with some nicer icing on the cake like dvd screens etc., but really- in terms of need? You really don't need much more than this in a head unit."

What's great about it: Best Value, Good Sound, Vast Compatibilty
What's not so great: None

"This radio is the best value and its backed by one of the two best brands in mobile sound - Pioneer. This radio comes with an extensive equalizer and superb subwoofer control, one of the best in my opinion. I install mobile sound systems for a living and I cannot be any happier with Pioneer's new line-up. Especially with the usb port so u can connect any usb devive to it and control it through the radio all while it charges the unit. The clear display is crisp and the ipod direct control via usb is easier than any other. It also comes with all the rca preouts needed to add a 4-channel and bass amp. I highly recommend this unit for an audio enthusiast who's on a budget and even if your not."

Nice Stereo for the money   02/13/2008
By TheOriginalComputerGeek from Lexington, KY

What's great about it: Sound Quality, options and versatility of inputs
What's not so great: Display size

"Bought to replace a Pioneer DEH-p8000r deck that was starting to wear out. Couldn't afford to get a stereo in the same line now however. Sound quality doesn't appear to be affected by the lower "series number". The only real downside is I was used to the larger display screen and the animated OEL screen the larger Pioneers have. Feature wise and sound wise this is an excellent stereo and I am happy with the purchase."
