Amazing Picture Quality
04/20/2008
By Vador98
What's great about it: Awesome in bright sunlight, Beautiful HD picture What's not so great: More advanced than most home PC's, Expensive HDMI cable to watch directly on TV
"I purchased this camera for a cruise that I'll be going on in a few weeks. I decided to try using it outside before the cruise to get a feel for it and to see what it can do, and I was completely amazed. I knew that I was getting a top of the line camcorder, and this one exceeded my expectations.
We went to Seaworld the day after receiving it, and I filmed almost all of the outdoor shows. The colors were extremely vivid. There was no ghosting from moving the camera around at all, and the sound quality was also amazing. It picked up everything in 5.1 surround sound, and the music from the shows sounded like it feel like we were in the stadium when we went to watch it again at home.
A few things we recorded (like the Penguin section and underwater shark tank) were indoors, and the picture quality there was incredible also. I couldn't see any pixelating noise, and it was pretty dark in those areas. Just amazing picture quality, no matter where you're filming.
The hard drive was seems a little small at 60GB. It's not too bad, and I haven't filled it up yet, but I know I'm going to want to film everything in full HD, and at that rate, there's about 430 minutes of record time. It may be plenty, but I guess I haven't had it for long enough to test that limit.
I wish that the USB cable would power the camera when it's on the hotshoe while charging. That would make it a little nicer if you don't have the hotshoe powered up when you want to transfer your videos to the computer. Also, I wish the video's came out of the camera in a format that it readable by all software. Since it's HD video, I guess that can't be done, but it makes it a little more of a hassle if you want to transfer it to DVD, or flash drive or something.
One feature that I really like is the ability to move data, whether it is a picture or a video, to your memory stick. This makes it a really nice backup feature, or a good way to slightly increase your recording time. I haven't tried it yet, but I understand that a 4GB memory stick can hold 30 minutes of video. It would get a little expensive at that rate, but I guess that's what you should expect for portable HD video storage.
All-in-all, the HDR-SR11 is an amazing camera. I had high expectations, and this camera blew away all of them. It is highly recommended. The only real problems that I see are these: #1: The video from the camera will likely be choppy on your home computer, unless you've upgraded your computer in 2007+. #2: The interface to connect the camera to your TV is a mini-HDMI. Mini-HDMI cables are very expensive (the one we purchased was $80). It's an amazing picture quality when hooked up directly, but you'll pay the price to see it. #3: It makes you want to buy more toys. Now I want to get a new PC with a blu-ray burner... Well, I guess maybe that's not such a bad thing... :)
If you want a camcorder that will just blow you away in quality, the SR11 is for you. It's honestly hard to imagine what Sony or JVC could do to improve upon the quality from this camera. If you're in the market to purchase a new camcorder, this should be very high on the list."

What's great about it: Easy to use, picture quality, size, design and etc. What's not so great: a little bit short battery life but overall, great cam
"What's great about it?-easy to use, excellent hd 1080 picture, viewfinder helps save battery life and ease of taking video in a bright sunny outdoor.I purchased a SR10, I exchanged it to SR11 cause the SR10 don't have viewfinder. What's not good about it? battery life is little bit short but that's not a problem at all."

What's great about it: storage space, 10.2 MP still, weight What's not so great: transfer from camcorder to computer via was SLOW over USB
"I bought this camera after watching the price for some time. Our old 8mm Sony wasn't working very well and I wanted a NICE camera with room to grow and I think this is it.
Filming in HD is cool. Taking pictures while videoing is easy to although I think it goes "DOWN" to 7.6 MP. LOL. Still really cool. I haven’t hooked it up to our Sony HDTV yet cause I want to use the mini HDMI cable which should have been included I think.
As soon as I got home I loaded the PMB software and then upgraded to the latest release which will let you do some of the things that people who bought early were experiencing. 3.0 to 3.30. Over Christmas I filmed 6.5 Gb worth of stuff and it took forever to transfer that over to my new Gateway PC. I doubt’s it’s a RAM or PC thing since a Phenom QUAD with 8 Gb of RAM. That is as far as I got with the software. Next up is to play with the video’s and output to DVD. I don’t have a blue ray but my dvd player upconverts everything to 1080. We’ll see how that works.
Awesome!"

What's great about it: The picture is AMAZING What's not so great: You need a blu-ray player and something to record the videos onto a cd
"OK. I got this for Christmas and couldn’t wait to get on here and trash this camcorder, and Sony. I almost returned it. First of all, you need a blue ray player to view any high-def images. I didn’t have one. Also, since there are no High def Recorder/Players on the market, you have to buy a recorder of some type to get the video off the camera and onto a CD.. I bought the Sony VDR- C5, which actually doesn’t record in blu-ray, but does a lower standard that blu-ray players can read. So we almost doubled the cost of the camera getting everything we needed. But once I got it all, I must say WOW. Viewing home videos is actually better than watching High def channels or even blue ray. This will BLOW YOU AWAY. Now I see the real value in this camera. At $2000 it's still a bargain, really. Now with that said, since I do not have a blu-ray recorder (they don’t make one yet), I am not even using this to full capacity! But with my camera and the Sony recoder, I can get the videos onto CD with the push of ONE button! Then go straight to the blu-ray. And again, the videos are amazing."

What's great about it: picture quality, ease of use. What's not so great: avchd format isn't supported by all editing software...yet.
"I took this with me for vacation in the Philippines and when I showed everyone at home the footage, they had their jaws to the floor. I also took this with me to the LA Car Show this past weekend and the cars look sooooo sweet in HD. The software that comes with it isn't all that great, but I can't really complain when the picture quality is sooo good and the 1080p recording can't be beat for now!"

What's great about it: Good features What's not so great: High price for a not so great lense system
"This camcorder sells for a high price, so you would expect high level results, but what you get is only average photographic quality. Another problem is that this camcorder's output is in AVCHD format which forces the user to also purchase a blu-ray player to see the output and most likely an HD monitor to view it. This can get very expensive."

What's great about it: Great qualty video, and pictures What's not so great: Indoors can get grainy if not adequate lighting
"I picked this camera up the week it was available and have used it many times since. The quality of video it shoots is great as long as you have a good enough light source. Videos shot outdoors during the day are wonderful. If you are shooting indoors you really need to make sure you have a strong light source or you video will start to look grainy. I also picked up the 4GB memory stick for this camera that allows be to take pictures as I film which is a neat feature. All around this is the best camcorder I have ever used or owned. The only real negative is the software that came with the Camcorder, it's not as user friendly as it could be."

What's great about it: The picture quality. What's not so great: The current price.
"I have been using this camera quite often in the stores and have been researching alot online. It is by far the most you will get for the money, but the price still is a little high so i'm going to give it till Christmas before i get it. The slow motion 240 fps option is phenomenal. The manual focus using the control knob on the front is a little slow, but very effective. The photographs seemed a little dark but very clear. The screen does not do justice to the photos on the camera. You much upload them and expand them out to truely appreciate them. Hands down the camera i'm going with after alot of research."

What's great about it: quality of movie and pic are sharp, built very nicely and sleek design What's not so great: nothing really other then waiting for conversion time it takes to pc.
"i always have been a fan of sony equipment. so it would make biased but believe me, this unit is very cool. yes it's expensive but hey your getting a 10mp camera which would cost you $300 to buy on the side. so your getting 2 in 1 product. hight picture quality and easy of viewing your pictures or movie and deleting it right away if you dont like it. big 3.2inch veiwing screen, biggest one out there right now with high def capable viewing. yes does not come with hdmi cable which is a bummer on sonys part but i guess you gotta make your money somewhere right. overall product is excellent and i recommend it highly. cons are only that you gotta have blue ray player to use the highdef recording onto a disc, but hey even regular dvd format is not to bad either for now. this camcorder is ahead of it's time so your okay for 3 to 4 years now. other then that i dont see any negative features about this cam."

"I'd get this camera again. . . no problems after nearly a year. Hard to edit video, or that may just be a user issue. I'd recommend getting the portable battery charger, too. It's only like 20$, but worth every penny if you don't want to mess around with all the cords to charge your battery."

What's great about it: Easy to use with professional results What's not so great: None
"What a great camera. I purchased it to video everything from football games to weddings. I have used this camera in all kinds of lighting situations and have had great results in all settings. Outside to lowlight wedding dance shots have all turned out unbelievable. With so many TV's not HD yet I tend to shoot the video in HD but burn onto the DVD in standard definition and it comes out great. Have not needed to purchase additional lighting features since this camera captures video great in low light conditions. I am definitely not an expert in this area but love this camera for the way everything looks professional."

"Very nice product, all of Sony's Handycams have out done thierselves. Very easy to use and it is
