"So far this little guy has been great. I had a Mini DV before and it was such a hassle to transfer videos to my computer (have to watch whole video while it transfers, computers wouldn't recognize it). I do ALOT of recording on the road (Car rally and runs), so I needed something small AND long record times. This one is PERFECT. In highest picture quality, I can get 8 HOURS of straight record time- no changing tapes or dvd's or memory cards. (Lowest picture quality you can get 37 hours). Everytime you start and stop record, it archives each video individually, so you don't have to go through separating all the videos. It's the easiest camcorder I have come across to date to use. Transferring to the computer IS A DREAM! The computer reads it as another drive so it picks it up right away, no problems. PLUS, you don't have to sit through each video while it's transferring. It just sends it, and it's done. You don't have a huge load of software to download into your computer to use it. The driver is built into the camcorder- just plug it in with the USB cord and you're done. It does however come with great editing software in the box. Video and sound quality is great. PLUS, the still picture quality is pretty darn good for a camcorder (great for when I don't have my DSLR with me). It's the smallest camcorder in it's class. I'd reccomend this one to anyone. Price was phenomenal, as well. Best Buy was the cheapest price out of everyone. Everyone else is selling it at about $450. I got mine on sale for $356 plus I got a $25 gift card."

What's great about it: Easy to use, compact, good value for money
What's not so great: Records in a proprietry MOD file which isn't user friendly.

"I researched cameras and I had a limited budget. I ended up with the blue everio camcorder and it's a great leap from my previous tape camera's, (JVC & Sony).
It's easy to use and over all does a great job, but,
You do need to purchase an extra battery, don't do what I did and buy an extra 1 hour battery, buy the 3 hour as the extra 1 hr battery wasn't doing the job I needed. These batteries aren't cheap.
Every now and then, it does struggle to focus.
The biggest negative with this camera is that it downloads the files as a "MOD" file. This file works with the provided software but the software isn't great. If you try and view these "MOD" files with another program,(WMM or itunes), you will most likely have problems, (both MAC and Windows) unless you have a brand new computer, good luck!
I've also wasted money trying to buy conversion programs. If I had of known this going into it, I wouldn't have purchased it.

"Bought the Everio at Store. We were considering DVD, but salesperson was very informative and showed us all options within our price range. This was the best value for what we were willing to spend. When we returned home and started using the camcorder, we were pleased at how easy it was to use and start recording. I would greatly recommend the Everio to my friends."

"I recently purchased this camcorder to take with me to record my son's graduation from West Point. I didn't really mess with it much before leaving on our trip and thought that might hinder my ability to record properly. I was wrong, this camcorder was so easy to use I didn't have a problem at all. It is so small it fit in my purse without a problem and fit in my hand perfectly. I was delighted when I played back the recording when I returned home (I filmed the campus while my son was driving the car). The stabilizer really works well, I didn't have any jittering or jumping in the recording even though we were driving around the campus and going over bumps and dips. The hard drive stores more than you think, I was amazed at how much empty space I still had in it when I was uploading it to my desktop. The playback was crisp, clear and the colors were perfect. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone who is on a budget and wants something small that works well when on vacation or simply filming their animals or children in daily life. I couldn't be happier"

What's great about it: Lightweight, easy to use, and very portable
What's not so great: Battery life

"This is my first camcorder and I absolutely love it. When I went to Best Buy I was actually considering a DVD camcorder, but was not sure. I spoke with the sales person, and they showed me the difference between them. I just fell in love with the cool blue color, and all of the features. This camcorder has a touch screen feature to scroll through the menus with which makes it extremely easy to use. The camcorder is very light weight and portable also. One disadvantage though is that the battery life is not very long which is typical with most standard batteries, and so it would be nice if the camcorder had a viewfinder so that the LCD screen did not have to be used all the time. If you are a person that does not mind using the LCD screen all the time and will only need to film for about two hours at a time then this camcorder is perfect. I absolutely love this camcorder for my first one. I can not wait to go on vacation and use it in just a couple of weeks."

What's great about it: Does all you need in a camcorder

"I purchased a red everio and it does all the things that I was looking for in a camcorder. It had a pretty good image and video, had basic manual settings, great zoom, quite a lot of storage (good for 7 to 14 hours of recording), easy controls (almost did not use the manual), lightweight and small, easy download to my computer and most of all great price (got it on sale). Only thing about it is the short battery life of the battery that comes with the unit (it would be a shame not to get a long life battery specially with the long recording of the camcorder). Another thing is that it does not have an on screen remaining battery life indicator (though you can check it with two presses of a button). The last thing is a viewfinder would have been nice for those times when you do not want to use the screen (could also save on battery power). Overall I really like the camcorder."

What's great about it: Hard Drive Storage; Simplicity of Use
What's not so great: Low-light recording

"For the money spent a very nice camcorder. Purchased for my 16-yr old son. Used it right away and had no problems. Plug it in to your PC USB port and off you go. Even the included software is descent ... does everything you need. Battery life is descent as well. Would recommend purchasing a spare (I went with the 3-hr. battery) for when the stock battery runs out. Sure you could spend a lot more for a High-Def camera and one that would do better in low light situations, but for the money a very good choice."

"We love our new camcorder! It has great features through the slide menu. We bought the camcorder knowing the still pic quality is low ( that is standard on them) and it is but, if you don't have your camera with you it still takes pics when needed! we like not having the touch screen like some others because it doesn't get finger prints on the screen

"I bought this unit in particular for a trip to Florida and loved it! It was lightweight, easy to use and took great videos. The only con really is the download and editing procedure on your computer. If you aren't familiar with editing a video or movie, it is going to take you a while to get the hang of it - but it's definitely worth it!"

Needs A Wider Lens 06/22/2008

What's great about it: Excellent Image Quality
What's not so great: Lens Angle Not Wide Enough

"I purchased this camera in advance of a Hawaii trip coming up. I wanted to get familiar with it. It fits all of my needs which are not very specific but they all needed to be met.

My Requirements
1. Work with a mac - works great with my current Mac Mini and iMovie. Videos transfer fast via USB with no driver or software issues to deal with.

2. Easy to navigate - the touch buttons took a small bit of getting used to but once you master them they are a joy to work with. The menu can get a little long however making it smaller with too many layers would have been worse.

3. Small size - I needed it to fit into a small bag or purse and it does that quite well. My fiance can carry this as well as her other small still camera in her purse and carry it around all day.

4. Large capacity - i wanted a harddrive camera as I have had tape and disc cameras in the past and they become cumbersome for long trips. For daily use dics/tape cameras are fine but a 2 week trip to Hawaii would become cluttered if I had to buy extra tapes or discs. Also reusing removable media is a pain and qualtiy degrades.

5. Battery Life - this is where my overall rating loses a star. The supplied battery is just not large enough. I understand that all video cameras come with an inadequate battery and this is no exception. I will be picking up the 3.5 hour battery for sure as I will not be near a charging station for an entire day and would want the camera to work all day

6. Accessories and lens cap - I lose lens caps. Its a bad habit but I lose them. I like the build in lens cap as I wont lose it. Also it does not flap around in the wind if it was on a string and attached like other cameras have. Also, I have found the lens to not be wide enough. But being a standard size I can get a wide angle or even zoom lens attachment if needed.

7. Overall construction - I needed the camera to feel well constructed. This camera is very solid. While being all plastic it takes a beating. Also with no doors or tape mechanisms to break it can handle a drop better than other cameras. It also has drop detection but I really have no idea what that does accept maybe shut the camera off quickly??

The biggest bonus to this camera is that it does not have alot of buttons and switched on the outside Each of the 3 ports (power, AV, USB) have doors that cover the ports and make for a very clean exterior. Also, buttons are placed in a very easy to get to layout and my change of accidentally bumping some button are quite low.

Another downside but not really a minus is the still image quality. Quite simply, it sucks. However, I did not get the camera for still as I have several other still cameras that will fit the bill quite nicely. My view is that video cameras are not meant for stills and still cameras are not meant for video."

What's great about it: Ultra small size, ample recording space, great looks
What's not so great: Mediocre battery life (about 1.25 Hours with included battery), okay video quality, no nightshot

"This Camcorder overall is pretty decent for anyone just looking for a good, and not too pricy camcorder. Its main shortcomings seem to be in my case a lack of strong battery life and an absence of a NightShot feature that my old Sony had (This uses infrared light to capture images in pitch dark surroundings). The Weak battery life can be remedied through the purchase of the extended battery but this option will cost you an extra $100.
As a person who uses this camera to shoot projects and to make small movies for fun, it's perfectly adequate. If you're looking for something with great or awesome video quality however, this is not the way to go. I'm not saying the video quality is bad because its great for people who just want normal video quality. But for people looking for close to an HD quality video or something comparable, they will be disappointed.
All in all though, good camcorder with everything a normal person would ever need for filming."

Terrible Auto-Focus 05/30/2008

What's great about it: Very small/ light weight, low price, laser touch feature rocks, cool blue color
What's not so great: Terrible auto-focus, mediocre picture quality

"I've never owned anything JVC before and after owning this camcorder for a very brief time I'm not sure I would ever buy anything else JVC ever again. Sure it does have some awesome features like the really cool laser touch bar that runs alongside the LCD screen and the blue case it comes housed in is also really different, but once you start filming you're going to see big flaws like, for example, it completely loses focus at random times in the middle of a bright, sunny day when you're not even zoomed in or moving the camera. Everything you've just recorded looks pretty good on the LCD screen, but blow it up on my very tiny 20" TV and the picture quality looks less than average (indoors) to nothing more than mediocre (outdoors on a sunny day). I had numerous problems with the auto-focus and sure I could manually focus, but I really shouldn't have to. The price is reasonably low for a hard drive camcorder, but I plan on taking this thing back tomorrow (a little more than a week past my purchase date). I plan on getting the Sony Handicam model that is around the same price (a little more actually). The Sony model claims to have a zoom microphone, Super Steadyshot, and Super Night Shot, which are all things the JVC Everio does not appear to have."

"This is a great camcorder but in the product discription it says the camera has special effects. It doesn't . Or if it does I couldn't find em. Very bummed cause I was looking forward to use them with different pictures/footage."

Really disappointed 04/30/2008

"This was my first camcorder and I was really excited when I got it. I bought it less than a month ago so I could take it on my honeymoon. It was working great in the beginning. Although this is my first camcorder, I have used many camcorders in the past for many years now. One thing I noticed right away that I did not like was that when I zoomed in on something and then turned off the camera, the next time I used it, it would be in the same zoom position. One of the days on my honeymoon, I pulled it out to start filming and it was in the zoomed position. I tried to unzoom and it was stuck. I kept trying to turn it off, take out the battery, wait a few days, but it's still stuck. I'm not sure if this is something that can be fixed, but I'm really upset that it's brand new and it already stopped working. I was not able to film the rest of my honeymoon because it would no longer focus on anything."
