Very good DVD player

What's great about it: This is a great DVD player for an awesome price! Many extra features.
What's not so great: Wish the remote had seperate skip and search buttons.
"This is an awesome DVD player! When you consider all that you get with this unit for the price you pay, this is a hard unit to pass on! The HD upconversion works like a champ, which is the real reason that we bought it. But the added feature of the USB port to connect an external hard drive to play movies from, that to me is what makes this player stand out from all the rest. I'm VERY happy with this purchase, and have already recommended it to my brother who was looking for a DVD player with HD upconversion."

Not Bad...but Not Great!

What's great about it: Great picture and connectability!
What's not so great: Unstable hardware issues!
"This DVD player is a decent buy for a 1080p upconverter. It has a great picture on my 42" Panasonic 720p HDTV and supurb sound with my Yamaha 5.1 Surround Sound system. However, i noticed after playing a few DVD's thru it...it started freezing up on me! Most of the time it wouldn't even start the DVD at all! It would just sit there and say LOAD for several minutes. But instead of getting mad and taking it back i decided to unplug it for a few minutes and plug it back in. It's working again...for now! If you're looking for a cheap upconverting DVD player, this one is ok for the price...just get a warranty with it($10 extra a BB)!!!"

What's great about it: picture, the USB plug
What's not so great: USB doesn't work of hard drives
"I've had this player for only a few days now, but I think it's a great buy for the price. Setup was VERY easy, picture quality seems very good, and I love having the USB port to play downloaded content that I don't want to burn to disc. However, my only negative, and it's minor, is that the USB port does not support external hard drives. I've seen a lot of reviews talking about playing videos from HDDs, but it has not worked for me. It works fine with a thumb/flash/jump drive; as I'm writing this, I'm watching an episode of an old TV show from a thumb drive. You just need a large enough drive. Overall, I think this is a great player."

PLAYS EVERYTHING!

What's great about it: Plays ALL digital formats, even from a USB drive; Plays PAL or NTSC on an American TV; Plays ALL regions
What's not so great: Loads slowly; The remote is just OK
"I wanted a DVD player that could play basically any digital format I might choose from my computer to watch on my old 48" Hitachi TV.
I wanted a DVD player that could read video files from an external USB drive inserted into a USB2 port on the player itself. (Note: External drive must be formatted in FAT32; Sandisk Cruzers work well)
I wanted a multi-region, multi-system DVD player that could not only play ANY region but could also convert PAL video to NTSC for an American TV thereby enabling me to play ANY video format and ANY region DVD from ANYwhere in the world!
The Philips dvp5990 does all that I wanted. I don't care about upconversion at this time but as a bonus, this player is ready.
The player is slow loading but I knew this having read the reviews and really it isn't that bad. About 15 seconds at most. It can take me as long to get situated myself. :)
The one thing I don't like: The volume button on the remote doesn't want to adjust the volume. I have to use my digital converter box's remote for that. A small nuisance when I already have the player's remote in my hand.
All in all.. this player does everything that I wanted. But note: While the built in PAL to NTSC video converter is an acknowledged component by Philips, the multi-region aspect of the player is NOT... so don't email Philips asking about how you can make your player multi-region. You'll have to search out the hack on your own online. But it's actually dead easy once you know what to do. And that's where Google helps us tremendously. :)
I give this player 5 Stars Picture quality is excellent!!"

What's great about it: slim size
What's not so great: it didn't work, froze on seond attempt to play a movie
"Installed the component and was testing the device with the universal remote. The dvd loaded and played the first test, but would not play the same movie the second time we ran through the test. Attempted to play three different DVDs and the display said loading, loading, and would not play. Boxed it back up and returned for credit."

What's great about it: The USB Port
What's not so great: nothing
"This is the best piece of equipment I own except for my Laptop. The USB port is the best feature. It allows you to plug in a flashdrive or even my 500 GB External Hard Drive. I have 100 movies in .avi format on my external hard drive and and I can just plug it into the USB port and I can just scroll through the movies and just pick one to watch. I dont have to convert the .avi files that only 700mb to a dvd standard format like divx which is about 4gb or more. So it gives me about 75% more storage on my external hard drive since I don't need to convert them to watch them on my TV and I can put upto 7 full lenght motion pictures in .avi format on a single DVD!! Also I can copy something from one of my friends computer like pics or movies and just plug it into the USB and just play it no need to take all that time burning to a dvd. It would be worth it to me if it was $300.00 so I cant be more thrilled yhat it's only $60.00. This year I bought 3 as gifts and I know that they will love them as much as I do. A great deal and a very veritile product because it also plays regular cd/dvd's and the picture is great due to the up conversion too! If you are into downloading movies online then this is a must for you. No more converting. Just download, copy to flash or extarnal hard drive and just plug-n-play and enjoy!!"

What's great about it: cheap, easy to use
What's not so great: too wide
"Bought this as an alternative to the cost of a blu-ray for my new HDTV, very happy with the upconversion, picture quality is much higher than that in my standard DVD upscale sony player that I spend considerable more on."

Great player for the price!

What's great about it: Excellent quality pictures for a low price
What's not so great: Nothing so far
"This is an excellent DVD player for the price; I can't believe it sells for so little. The picture quality is very good, setup is simple, and the controls are pretty easy to use although you may have to hunt a bit. I have mine plugged in to a Dynex 42" widescreen plasma TV via HDMI and my movies have never looked so good. I don't doubt that more expensive players can do better, but this one gives you a lot of bang for your buck."

Plays mp3 for
11/05/2008

What's great about it: I tried hundreds of mp3 on a DVD, it played!
What's not so great: I love this unit.
""This really is a fine, inexpensive DVD player, as you might expect from Phillips, the fore-runner in DVD and home entertainment product other than SONY. What I found is great, is that you can burn DVD-R with hundreds of mp3 tunes and play them as a continueous playlist... (in the order they are on the DVD is what I've done so far... don't know about programming selections!) I tested the unit with a DVD-R that had 1,000 Mp3 tunes on it (yes, 1,000) and the unit showed that 648 were avilable and started playing the first one. That means I could play tunes from now until tomorrow or more (I didn't bother to do the math) off the same, single DVD. Note these were just un-foldered mp3's ... Don't know about how folders are played either. I'm content to just get hours and hours of music (my music, my way) played through the multi-speaker sound system off a unit that's way, way under $100. Great for dinner partys where you can select exactly what you like, and move the mood along. THE USB port allows you to get a cheap 4 or 8 Gb flash memory stick, and move stuff like mp3, DIvX movies or .jpg between computer and living room with ease. The quest for the personal juke box/picture/movie player is over! BIG thanks, Phillips!""

What's great about it: sharper Picture
What's not so great: no Clock
"This is a great Dvd Player the dvd's are so much sharper. I really Love it . But I wished it had a clock built in i am use to seeing the clock on my other player when I sit up. That's the only thing I found wrong with the Dvd Player so if you want a sharp picture this is the one for you."

Hunk o' Junk

What's great about it: none
What's not so great: tiniest scratch and it won't play it
"I bought a $200 Philips years ago from Best Buy and it had the same issues - really poor error correction - it sees a scratch and it can't handle it. Had this piece of junk for 2 months and it did the same thing. Would just blank out and not come back for 10 - 20 minutes. If I went to scene and backtracked just ahead of where it failed, it would sometimes work for a little while. Even tried polishing DVDs and didn't help much. I had a $35 Emerson that handled DVDs this one won't play - in fact I never had a rental DVD the Emerson couldn't handle and those DVDs get beat up. I think Philips' firmware is lousy. Not worth more than what you'd pay for a paperweight. Never buy a Philips again."

What's great about it: Great when it works
What's not so great: Broke after repeatedly playing DVD-R's
"This player worked fine for the first year of its life. I use the player to play primarily backup copies of my original DVD's. After playing lots of DVD-R's the player stopped reading them well and eventually stopped working completely and wouldn't play normal DVD's either."
