Great little DVD player!

What's great about it: Easy setup, digital optical audio out!
"Recently I purchased a Yamaha HDMI reciever, thinking that's what I needed to keep up with the latest A/V advances. Then I discovered this little DVD player with digital optical audio out. This works perfectly with my older HK receiver, so,needless to say, I took the 500$ receiver back, invested 92 bucks in this player, and I now have great audio (with the optical out going through the HK) and video (through upconversion straight to the tv)! Also, as someone noted, you can connect an external hard drive to the USB port and play movies that way, I haven't tried yet, but you can bet I will! (I've only owned it a week so please keep that in mind)."

What's great about it: when it works everything
What's not so great: crapped out in 8 months
"this dvd player replaced an Emerson DVD/VCR combo that is over 6 years old and still works. I can't believe that an Emerson can last over 6 years and an LG is only good for 8 months. i will be taking the Emerson out of the garage and hooking it back up."

What's great about it: NOTHING
What's not so great: I had this dvd player for less than a year and it died on me..wasted 88 dollars on a this and wont last more than a year
"I am very disappointed in this product, i play 2 or so dvd in a week, very few at that. i never left it on and turned it off when i was finished, and less than a year later the dvd player which was keep in excellent conditon decided to not play dvds or anything for that matter, tried cleaning it and not worked, it wasnt dirty, it just has some mechanical issues. Stay away and spend you money on another product."

What's great about it: Worked well with my Plasma
What's not so great: Stopped working in month 13 of owning. Only used for 1 movie every week or so.
"I watch a dvd about every week or so. I purchased this player 13 months ago. Safe to say I watched 25-30 movies. It no longer works. It isn't dirty, not kept in the open dusty area, and it has never been mistreated. I did not buy extended warranty because I thought it's a LG........"

What's not so great: Sweet and easy setup
"I love this player, I also hooked an external hard drive to mine via the USB port.
now I have tons of movies on it available with a push of a button.
only problem doing this, if your thinking about doing it, make sure you format your HD to Fat32 as it will not work with NTFS file system.
would be nice if the usb port was on the back though, but I guess it's on the front because most people use flash drives with it."

What's great about it: So simple to set up even a caveman can do it!
What's not so great: There is nothing that bad
"This DVD player is one of the most easiest to set up you can do it the old way with the cable with the 3 plugs or the easy way with the newer TV's with the HDMI cable. The picture quality is great. this DVD also plays the ones that are made on computers! Get this DVD player while it last and before they finally force everyone to go to blue ray. I own this DVD player and the LG name is of great quality, I own allot of older LG products and they have lasted allot longer then other brands. This if you want to pay more for another brand go ahead and pay for their name, if you want the same quality then this is the brand player to get and LG products last longer and work longer."

What's not so great: Directions for using remote to move between file types on SUB drive
"This LG DVD player is outstanding. I wanted a good, cheap device for playing DVDs. This fits the bill and has the bonus of playing from usb connected mass storage. That feature makes this worth buying 2 more for my other TVs. I have a friend on his way after work to pick one up as well."

"This DVD player does the trick. Nice upconversion for a good picture. Optical output is a huge bonus. Plays almost any type of format or disk you throw at it. The player itself is a good size...not too bulky."

"This DVD player is awesome. It recognizes most file types via data CD/DVD or USB stick interface. Picture is great, sound is great. Buy it. Buy two of them. It seems at least as good as the OPPO that I paid double what this LG cost. The tray is a little flimsy, so just be careful with it and you should be fine."

Best DVD Player I've had

What's great about it: Great price, great features, great hardware support
What's not so great: Does not support newer divx formats
"I do not use this on an HD TV. I use this on a 32" tube.
I filled an external hard drive with divx and xvid movies, music, and photos and plugged it into the front usb. I don't even need disks. I have my entire collection hooked up to this thing.
This is great. It supports my older hardware like my optical out and s-video while also offering me a chance to upgrade tv's sometime with the other choices.
It does play divx, but not the newer closed formats that requires a license. It also plays videos encoded in xvid which is just as good and more common depending on where you get your movies.
For music it allows you to create a playlist or just play from a folder which is cool.

"Love the player, but cannot get it to work with our Dell projector. Inst manual mentions copyright protection issues. Thus, a component to VGA adaptor, appears to be like a computer, which may be the problem."

What's great about it: Very very versatile
What's not so great: Could be cheaper but... sometimes you get what you pay for
"Well I have to say that I am really impressed by this player. It has easily handled all of my backup disks and can read MP3's, JPEG and MPEG too. I had to try a few players before I made it to this one. I should have went with my instinct and purchased this one in the first place. Once again LG has not let me down."

What's great about it: Nice upconvert, USB

"I have this hooked up via HDMI, and it provides a very nice upconvert picture, which is all I was looking for. The remote is fairly small but it does allow you to control the TV as well (although brands are limited). The one real complaint I have is that the DVD tray is extremely shallow and you must be careful to get the DVD inserted properly. I don't have a problem with the speed -- seems about the same as others in this price range. It does have USB, but it doesn't support DivX."

What's great about it: Good picture though HDMI upconversion, fiber optic audio connection, small size
What's not so great: Seems to take much too long to power up or do anything for that matter, slightly cheap looking
"For the price I really can't complain. I just wanted something serviceable until the whole HD DVD/Blu Ray situation resolved itself. HDMI upvonversion is an excellent improvement over standard RCA connections, providing picture quality nearly as good (and sometimes better) as typical HD programming.
The main drawback is the overall sluggishness of the unit. Something as simple as powering up and opening the disc tray feels like it takes two to three times as long as it should. This may not bother most people but I also use this for music CDs and I like to pop discs in and out frequently and dealing with the slow response is pretty annoying. Other than that it looks a little cheap. Setting up Dolby/DTS audio was a bit of a hassle as well, I had to navigate some menus to activate that function which seemed a little odd.
Overall, you get what you pay for hear. No problems, jus some minor gripes."

What's not so great: buggy, stopped working after 16 months of part time use
"We bought this LG upconvert DVD player for a bedroom. Didn't want to spend a lot of money because we knew it would get limited use. It was a "nice to have" purchase. We did NOT buy the extra $19.00 warranty...HOW STUPID....We only use the player maybe once a week. Well, the first player was buggy within the first 30 days and we returned it no problem. The second one worked fine and we thought we were good to go. The machine has lasted about 16 months. Now it shuts itself off or goes into reverse mode for no reason. Also, there are now lines across the screen. Today if finally died. The power was on but nothing was happening. We shut it off, but it wouldn't turn off, its stuck in standby mode. So we unplugged and tried to power it back up and nothing. So we've taken it apart to take out the stuck dvd and it's going in the trash. I guess you could say we rented a dvd player for $5.00 a month - which sounds cheap, but we really expected it to last at least 3 or 4 years before dying. This is the 4th LG product we have purchased and all of them have had some sort of problem. I think we'll stick with Sony....more expensive... but at least in our experience ... more reliable."

Great drive at cost

"My old DVD of 11 years finally croaked, wanted something inexpensive since it isn't on my main TV. I have it on my 32" HD LCD in the basement, and I have been very pleased. I have the optical run into my 5.1 stereo, sounds great. Looks great too. It had no issues playing the Divx disks I had. It wouldn't play one I had that was done in XVid format, some people consider that Divx, but it is really an off format. It worked with my burned DVDs and CD, in both read and read write formats. Remote worked find with my TV, but I am using the tv setop box remote instead, so I haven't used it much. The only complaint I had was that it takes a while to spin a disk up to play, but I'm fine with that. For picture at price, format support, I'm happy."
