What's great about it: Picture clarity, easy to use, the rechargeable battery.
What's not so great: nothing thus far
I went from a standard Digital camera to this one and the difference in picture quality is mind boggling. The price was just right for a beginner like myself. I will never go back to a point and shoot camera. I got the package with the extra lens and case. The case is very useful to keep everything organized and free of dust. The 55-200mm lens is a must to get awesome pictures of wildlife. So far I've been using the Auto mode, until I take classes this month to learn how to use this camera to the best of it's abilities, but it takes wonderful pictures just in Auto mode. I love this camera and spent 6 months researching and found almost always positive reviews for this one and thats why I bought it, and I'm glad I did.

What's great about it: good quality
What's not so great: no video shooting
I got this camera for my 14th birthday after begging for it for months, and I'm not disappointed with it.
This is my first time using a SLR camera, and at first, I just used the auto settings, but I started to get more into it and used the manual settings. I think this is a good camera for beginners because you get to figure out all the basics of photography. It'd be pretty pointless to right away buy a $4000 camera and not know anything about it.
I don't live somewhere where you can take classes for photography, so I had to learn it by myself. It took a while to figure everything out, and I'm still learning about some stuff, but I love my camera.
I don't really have anything complaints about it, because I have nothing to compare it to, but the only thing is that you can't capture video with it. Other than that, it's a nice camera.

What's great about it: Cheap DSLR
What's not so great: 3 Focusing Points
I love the price for this DSLR. it has many shooting modes if you ask me. I only keep it in Manual Mode. Picture quality it has to be one of the biggest Pros. The only Con I found to this camera was 3 Focusing points, just three? It makes it difficult to get the picture you imagine.

What's great about it: auto mode for quick shooting, self cleaning sensor, tons of options
What's not so great: advanced manual modes take awhile to get used to
I was originally going to go with the Nikon D40 (after lots of research, it is basically the same as a D60), but my D60 was an early graduation gift. Though I cant compare it to the D40, it is a great camera.
I purchased a camera case right off the bat, because of the price, I didn't want anything to happen to it. So far, it has come in handy, especially under certain weather conditions.
As my first DSLR camera, I am thoroughly impressed. It has fulfilled all of my expectations. The software it comes with is also great. I am scheduling to take engagement pictures for a family friend.
There are also so many options. While you're learning, auto mode is nice for quick shooting without hassling with all the different settings. Later on down the road, when you get to know your camera more, it has advanced modes that let you control tons of different shooting options. I recommend learning about how to use these advanced mode, so you're not taking advantage of all this camera has to offer.
Awesome camera.

What's great about it: For the price, you get amazing photo quality, a lightweight body, tons of different settings, and an easy to use camera.
What's not so great: I honestly have yet to find anything that I don't like about it, and I've had it for over 7 months now.
I'm very happy with this camera. It's definitely worth the price, with how easy it is to just grab and use for anything. I couldn't ask for a better camera.

The camera is a great beginning camera. It takes great pictures and the ease of use is amazing.. Watch the Nikon School video and you will learn a lot about photography and the camera, along with its capabilities. This is my first camera and I couldn't have been happier. But if you want the bells and whistles I would say get the D90 but if you're starting off like me the d60 is a great deal. Try to find it with a package deal with lenses - it'll be worth it.

What's great about it: easy to use out of the box
What's not so great: it replays pictures taken delaying future shoots, maybe just me.
This is the first Nikon ive had and always wanted one. I like the size, the battery life, the amount of pictures it can take with a memory card. Love how you can shoot many pictures real fast catching all the necessary action. Im not a professional and do this as a hobby and dont' know all the techs and just point and shoot and yet explore all the features and like them all so far. Have not tried the video yet or anything surrounding it, so much to learn it's great. Wonder if they will come out with a touch screen. I like how the screen does shut off when you are ready to take a picture.

What's great about it: fast
What's not so great: size
hi first Here's the quick reminder: it's not the camera, it's the photographer. Maybe, maybe a nice fast lens would help.
Like most things in life, it doesn't really matter how "good" or how expensive the equipment is, it's really how "well" you can use it. You can own the best racket in the world, but Roger Federer will still beat you with a wooden racket any day.
Such is the case for the D60. It has more than enough features to produce great pictures. If you take the time to learn all its functions, you'll find that for an entry level DSLR, it's a great camera. If you think about it, all you really need in a camera are controls for shutter speed, aperature, and focus. For me (pure amateur), 95% of the time I'm shooting in Aperature-priority mode. The only other settings I might touch from time to time are the ISO and white balance settings. Most likely you'll do the same.
Pluses:
- light & compact
- ultrasonic sensor cleaner, matched with a airflow control system (keeps the sensor dust free!)
- 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II (compares against over 30,000 pics stored in database to achieve best exposure, available only with Nikon D or G type lenses)
- pretty good performance from built-in flash
- ISO 3200 available
- ISO 100 available (this is becoming a rarity)
- Active D-Lighting (automatically compensates over or under exposed areas in a high contrast scene)
- LCD screen shuts off when eye is close to viewfinder (saves power)
- very quick startup, you can take a picture as soon as you turn the camera on, even if flash is needed
- SDHC compatible (I use an 8GB card!)
Minuses:
- not so great focusing in poor lighting, only 3 focus points, sometimes wrong objects are focused on
- Auto ISO doesn't always choose the right ISO
- the all "Auto" mode produces slightly oversaturated pictures
- slightly "noisy" from ISO 800 and above, but noise reduction is available
- no built-in auto focus motor, Nikon AF-S/AF-I lenses or third party lenses with built-in focus motor are necessary, unless you like to manually focus
If you're looking the DSLR that can do many wonderful things but don't have a whole lot to spend, this is the camera to get. It may not have as many pixels (who really needs more than 10mp?), nor does it have the large 3" LCD screen like the D300 or D3, but for a fraction of the price, you can take just as good pictures. Point is, rather than spending $1000 more on a D300, you're much better off getting the D60 and spending the $1000 on a nice fast lens.
The only reason I'm giving this camera 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the average focusing performance. 3 focus points are adequate, but having more focus points and a faster focus system would speed up overall focusing and wouldn't have as much trouble in poor lit conditions.
And don't buy into all that hoopla about the D60 not having VR (Vibration Reduction) built-in. First off, there are plenty of new lenses coming out with VR built-in. Second, I'd trade VR for a 2.8 lens ANYDAY!
So, unless you have a need to shoot fast actions in poor lighting conditions, get the D60. It's SO worth the money. And remember, it's not about the megapixels or the size of the LCD screen, or the VR, or whatever, it's about YOU, the photographer!!!

What's great about it: It's really small, very friendly. The clarity and quality is beyond the price!
What's not so great: Too menu-based?
All that the novice might want, this camera will have and perhaps a bit more. If you've just entered into the world of dSLR photography this camera will amaze you, there is no doubt. The quality is pretty good for a camera under K dollars. I use it as a second and it has never disappointed me, never. Im not quite sure how well the camera performs on preset modes but on A mode, S mode or M mode it does wonderful, believe me (you really should not be shooting automatic anyways, go manual ! ). With a descent editing software you can easily transform your images into professional caliber-stuff. The only bad thing I can write about this little gem is that for some options it would better if they were particular buttons, as in being on the body itself. Other than that I highly recommend the Nikon D60. The color, the sharpness, speed, the design and the LCD this camera offers you is fantastic. Have fun!

What's great about it: Easy set up, quick charge battery, basic controls, good price for budget use
What's not so great: unablet o shoot video
This camera is a good budget entry level slr for someone who is just switching over and is looking for more versatility than is offered through the point and shoot models.
Camera set up is very easy with the quick start guide. Takes SD cards. To learn more about the camera the book is very informative about what it can do with easy to follow instructions.
The only shortcoming is that is does not do video like the D90 but unless you are doing alot of it the proce difference is not worth it.

What's great about it: Easy to use, Easy to carry, Light weighted
What's not so great: Iso Sensitivity Range is not incredible
After much deliberation in deciding whether to buy the Nikon D40x or the Nikon D60, I decided that the Nikon D60 was the best value in price. The Nikon D60 is not only convenient but it also produces very similar pictures as the other "higher classed" Nikon models. The LCD screen shows you everything you need to know about the correct shutter speeds and aperature. I got off using any automatic functions because it was so fun to mess with the aperatures and shutter speeds. When you buy a DLSR its not fun if you restrict yourself to the automatic function, just get a point and shoot for that. The Nikon D60 is probably the best Camera out there to improve yourself as an artist and photographer.

What's great about it: Ease of use for a novice, yet feature rich for an advanced user
What's not so great: Plastic body, could prove not as durable, besides that nothing
After a great deal of research, and with some input from my wife we decided to purchase this camera just over a month ago now and have taken well 1500 pictures. This camera offers somewhat of the best of both worlds, it is a feature rich mid-entry level DSLR that is a great option if multiple people are going to be using the camera. Amazing battery life!!!
It allows my wife to pick it up in turn the dial to automatic mode, make some adjustments to the zoom then let the auto focus take over and press the shutter release, but it allows me to make some choices, how much do I want to push, manually choose the shutter speed and f-stop as I would with my older 35mm SLR.
I highly recommend this body for anyone just getting into the DSLR world, as it allows for future growth, with an assortment of lenses, and the flash we have I can easily add a D90 body to give me the additional functionality I look for in a camera, and yet my wife can shoot at the same time, or better yet I can have the ability to set both to go and have a more instant gratification from the less complicated yet still powerful D60.

What's great about it: fairly simple as far as slr's go, great features.
What's not so great: the experience of purchasing it
I bought this camera yesterday and already have taken over two hundred photos. The images come out crisp and clear on automatic, although I haven't ventured into the manual modes. Like I said the camera is great my only problem was with the staff at the store I bought it from. The staff was seemingly indifferent and after waiting twenty minutes a employee finally ended his conversation with a fellow employee and proceeded to walk by me. When I did get the attention of one of them it became quickly apparent that he knew nothing about cameras, or maybe I just couldn't hear him over his mubbleing. Anyhow I eventually bought the camera and now I really enjoy it.

What's great about it: Everything
This camera is amazing! It is so easy to use and you can get great pictures. I had my aunt who is a pro. help with some of the manuel settings but it was simple to understand. The lens that I have now does not zoom very close so I have to be close to anything I take a picture of but thats okay for now. This camera is a must have for anyone who likes taking pictures.

What's great about it: Takes Great Pictures, Menu is great, Battery Life is Awesome
What's not so great: Ashton Kutcher Did Not Pop out of the box to show me how to use it :(
This is my first SLR camera and I waited 6 months before writing a review. Which is important because so many people write reviews while they haven't learned much about the product they purchased. ANyway --- I LOVE it! It did take me a little while to learn about it. I took a short class and joined a local photo club to learn more and bought a few books. The worse thing you can do with these type cameras is leave them on AUTO setting although they take great pictures there. But they take AWESOME pictures when you explore the other settings. In Just 6 months of playing with this camera, I have been asked to shoot weddings and portraits for people because they have been so impressed with my photos. I LOVE IT!!!!

What's great about it: incredible pictures with kit lens, myriad features
What's not so great: auto focus only available with select lenses?
This is my 1st DSLR however my mother has been a professional photographer for decades. That being said, even she was impressed with the features Nikon offers here. The ISO sensitivity ranging from 100 to 3200 is a major plus for getting a handle on the light sources. Aperture maxes at f/36. Several preset shooting modes to use until you learn the ropes of the camera. If you are purchasing this with intent to mainly do portraits or wide shots the kit lens is substantial. Definately pick up a tripod as you'll want to play with long exposures asap. Overall i have had zero problems from my D60. It will make you wish it was small enough to have everywhere you go. Go buy one now :)
*both photos are untouched by photoshop
*would have uploaded some close-ups of eyes but they would be too small. Preserves the detail in a persons eyes perfectly. Its quite stunning.

What's great about it: Decent price, Great photo quality
What's not so great: No Autofocus- common lenses such as the 50 mm 1.8 are manual focus only with this body.
If you're not going to go lens crazy, great camera
I would recommend this to a friend!
