What's great about it: Great system for price What's not so great: HDMI cables are expensive and not included
"I hooked this system up to my Sharp 52" LCD TV, Directv HD DVR, Sony Blueray player, and Rocketfish wireless rear speaker kit. (I also bought the expensive Monster HDMI 1080p cables for receiver to tv and receiver to blueray; I have a less expensive 1080i HDMI cable from receiver to Directv box.) Wow, watching movies is a whole new ballgame now!! The sound is AWESOME, the bass makes the whole room vibrate, and the rear surround adds SO much to the experience. The set-up was SO easy; even adding the wireless rear Rocketfish kit was simple once I asked Best Buy how to do it. (See my Rocketfish review for instructions.) And best of all, the price was cheap compared to some other name brand component systems. We have this in a large room, and we definitely don't need more than this 1000 watt system. The auto-calibration worked like a charm. I am really happy with this purchase!"

What's great about it: Easy to set up and great price
"This is a great surround sound system. It has 3 HDMI ports that lets you hook up all your entertainment needs. I have my satellite box, xbox 360, and PS3 hooked to it and one cable goes to my tv. It eliminates tacky cables going up the wall to the tv. It has awesome sound and is very easy to callibrate with the Auto Digital Callibration mic. This is a great product and I highly recommend it."

What's great about it: Awesome sound, easy to set up, bass very smooth-sounding What's not so great: Remote hard to learn at first
"I finally got the system I've been craving for during the past 2.5 weeks. It took me almost 2.5 hours to set-up system (3/4 of the time was assembling speaker stands, figuring out wiring path for rear surround speakers). I've got wood flooring in my living-room, so I routed the left/right surround speaker wires underneath my couch, then underneath our floor rug, then straight to the entertainment center. I used tie-wraps and tie-pads to secure wire on floor. I already had my wiring connections previously mapped out, so that saved some time. My current setup includes a Sony Bravia XBR2 40", 1 Motorola cable set-top box (non-HDMI), 1 DVD player (HDMI up-converts to 1080p), 1 Nintendo Wii. (Wii & Cable box connected to TV using component cables via inputs 5/6). I also connected the sound from the cable box to the receiver using a Rocketfish Digital Fiber Cable (Toslink). Can't wait for the PS3 to arrive, which will hook up to one of the 3 HDMI inputs on the receiver. All the wires are color-coded and speakers properly labeled as SR (Surround right/left), R, L, C, sub-woofer. Speaking of the woofer, the bass puts out a very smooth and not so overpowering sound and the size of the box flows well with my setup. I have 4 Sanus HB7 speaker stands holding up the speakers in place. I highly recommend these, you can't go wrong- Great stands- weighted base plates keep them in place (no tipping side to side). The remote control can be very daunting to figure-out at first. I still can't tell whether or not its' in TV control mode or DVD control mode. An LED indicator would be nice here (The Sony Bravia XBR2 has this)."

What's great about it: Easy speaker set up, great sound quality, completely integrates all my HT needs What's not so great: Some input/output combinations are hard to follow
"This system has the best value I've seen in a long time. I recently replaced my Panasonic all-in-one HT unit (that I had for only one week) with this Sony HT and a matching BluRay player. The Panasonic had disappointed me in several ways (sound quality, upconversion, overall style). This Sony was a perfect replacement and has exceeded all of my expectations. For the price, this has to be the best system I've seen/heard. To start, the sound is very customizable. There are many different preset EQs, so it's not hard to find a nice match for your listening preferences. Audio quality with "optical in" from my Apple TV is BEAUTIFUL! The system also makes it easy to run HDMI into the HT system. The system plays the audio and outputs the video to your TV. Trust me, there is NO video quality lost at all! This requires another (second) HDMI cable, but I promise, it is worth it! The sound is VERY full and crisp, with a very nice low range from the sub. The styling of the Sony is 10x better than my former unit as well. All-in-all, this is my smartest home theater purchase ever!"

What's great about it: good sound quality, low cost, plenty of effects What's not so great: none for the price
"Great system for a small room. Don't expect to blow the pictures off the walls with this system. You can't beat the price of this system. Sound quality is very clear. The subwoofer could have a bit more punch. The surround speakers are small but sound great. I am using this system as a starter system while I put together a more serious component system. I am very pleased with the system overall."

What's great about it: Sound, appearance, ease of PHYSICAL set-up What's not so great: Printed support literature is lacklustre-not enough problem "tips"
"The speakers were very easy to set up and connect. Really a no-brainer. The color coded speaker connections and the labeled speakers made the physical set up a breeze. The printed literature leaves a lot to be desired. Really doesn't tell much. I had a problem with the receiver recognizing my cable box. The video would flash. No solid vid output. I was forced to connect my TV directly from the cable box (by-passing the receiver) and had to purchase an optical cable ($40.00). Sony support and my cable company (CABLEVISION) had no known conflicts on record. Anyway- all is fine at this point. We're trying it out and knowing we have a 45 day return policy we're auditioning it to the max. Hope this helps if you're thinking of buying this. I would recommend BESTBUY since they support their products and their customers and buying with confidence is a load off my mind."

What's great about it: Almost everything What's not so great: You have to point the remote directly at the system
"Awsome system that sounds great! Works great with my 46" Sony Bravia TV and my Sony PS3! The only thing I dont like is that you have to point the remote directly at the system for it to work. I wish they would of made the remote bluetooth. Other than that perfect system!"

What's great about it: Setup, Sound, Very Easy to Use, Simple Setup Menu What's not so great: subwoofer wire
"This is definitly an amazing home theater system. I have my XBOX 360 Elite hooked up through it via HDMI, and the sound is amazing. Very easy to hook up. The only thing that I didnt like was the subwoofer cable is too short. Do yourself a favor and buy this Sony before spending your money on something that costs twice as much. Your ears and wallet will love it."

What's great about it: Small receiver unit and speakers, fine sound quality What's not so great: Takes some experimentation to get a good sound
"I have had this Sony sound system for about three weeks and am very satisfied. I selected this system because of my past history with Sony products, the price that fit my budget, and the aesthetics of the receiver and speakers (this system is really small and fits in my TV cabinet beautifully). There is a companion Blu-Ray player to this unit that I didn't buy (yet). Setup was made easier because Sony uses color coded speaker connectors at the receiver. (Of course one worries what happens if a connector fails or breaks, but that didn't happen to me.) The sound quality is, perhaps, not equal to a component system but I have found the sound quality to be excellent. This was my first surround system system and what a difference it makes for all types of viewing especially movies. I have found that even TV shows sound great, but here is where the "CON" of the purchase comes into play. Its important to consult the manual (which is not that easy to follow sometimes) and experiment with the sound settings. At first the sound was tinny and harsh. Once I found the right surround sound mode, it suddenly came alive. This is the only, minor, issue that moved my Ease of Setup rating to a "4". I used the RocketFish rear speaker system and it is fantastic (see my review of this device). This has been a very good purchase that my family is really enjoying."

What's great about it: Great look, sound and ease of setup. What's not so great: None I have seen or heard yet.
"I have been waiting for a system to be in the right price range and have audio sent through HDMI. I got that and more. I have my PS3,X-Box 360 and a HD-DVD player attached to the receiver.Just hit the corresponding button on the remote that you have that items HDMI hooked into and you are good to go. I do have an Optical cable going from the TV to the Receiver and with this system I am in the middle of my favorite movies."

Sounds like a $1,000 system at a fraction of the $
08/26/2008
By KimWfrom Alexandria, VA
What's great about it: Looks and sounds great, sleek, stylish look without the large components but has big component sound. What's not so great: The subwoofer speaker wire needs to be longer. I ended up splicing it to add some length.
"I purchased a $1,200 system but returned it because it sounded horrible after it was home and connected. For that much money I expected a "Wow" effect, but was very disappointed. So, back to researching what one store told me was not possible. I just bought a Blu-ray player that I am very happy with and a Sony 46" Z series LCD TV so I didn't want a system with a DVD player or Blu-ray player. I also didn't want a big receiver, big speakers, and a big subwoofer. I found this system on Sony's website and came here to check the price. After much consideration I selected this system because of the sleek and small receiver and speakers. After several hours of hiding speaker wires, splicing the subwoofer wire to add a segment of additional speaker wire so I could hide the subwoofer, adding OmniMount Satellite speaker stands and hooking up all the speakers I turned the system on. I must admit I was very skeptical because this system was only a fraction of the price I'd spent on the system I returned. I put a DVD in and sat listening thinking this sounds great when all of a sudden the back surround speakers belted out sounds from the scene playing causing me to jump in shock. This was the "Wow" effect I was looking for when I first starting looking for a surround sound. The TV, stand and components all look sleek and clean, not cluttered with a big receiver, big center speaker, etc. It even passed muster by the ultra picky significant other. Set-up was easy and understanding the remote and receiver is very straight forward. If you have a Sony Bravia TV and/or DVD/Blu-ray player the receiver interacts with all of them and makes the operation brainless. Oh, I also used very high speed HDMI cables to match the 120 Hz refresh rate of the rest of the system. My HD cable box has a regular HDMI cable on it and the picture and sound is incredible compared to what it was before I added this system. I can't say enough about this system...definitely give this one a try before you buy a system three times this price. Hope this review helped if you are considering this system."

"This is a very nice home theatre system. I have watched several blu-ray movies using the Linear PCM track and it sounds like you are at a movie theatre. The subwoofer is very responsive and with some tweaking of the speaker levels you can get an awesome sound from this unit. I recommend this if you have a blu-ray DVD player."
