What's great about it: 3 Video Inputs, 7.1 Speaker Setup
What's not so great: Price
Outstanding product. Sony usually does not fail when they make A/V items, and this really fits that description! Even though it is a little bit expensive, it's worth it. Highly recommended!

What's great about it: easy to hook up
What's not so great: sound quality av sync is a joke and there is no easy option for 5.1 channel sound
I bought this to replace an old well used sony str485. I read reviews and decided to give it a try because it had the built for bluray designation. However it lacks support for both dolby truhd or dts master so i am not sure how it gets that credit. The unit was easy to set up and install. I had it in and working in place of my old stereo in about 20 minutes. I put in a bluray movie hoping to get rid of my av syncing problems. wrong av sync is in the menus and easy to fund but when i turned it on it delayed the audio even further making it about a half second. the sound calibration mic did work fairly well though and set the speaker volumes for my room correctly.

What's great about it: HDMI switching, 7.1
What's not so great: Gets a little warm
Everything works great including the use of hdmi to dvi. The only drawback is the video does not pass through if the receiver is off. This means you have to have it on for movies, tv, games, etc. Although this is not a problem with flat panel tvs because the sound is not good on most so you will use it most of the time. Good speakers make a great addition also. I suggest a sub, two floor speakers, a center speaker, and four bookshelf speakers for 7.1 audio.

What's great about it: Easy set up, fewer conections,Auto detects signals
What's not so great: Runs warmer then most recievers
Great A/V reciever, easy set up. Other reviews state that you can only use HDMI conections for the older DVD players, not true all you need is a single RCA line for video and conect it to another plug on the tv. I use HDMI and the analog conections. This reciever is used for our Blue Ray, Wii System, PS2 & Digital cable. The picture quaility is awesome, due to it goes through the reciever and then to the tv. The unit also detects if the signal is 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 sound on it's own. I recomend this reciever to anyone whom wants the best sound for the price. The only con I have is that this reciever puts off alot of heat. I installed a fan to help cool all of my componets. (cost about 25..00 ) Also I followed up with buying a Logitech universal remote from Best Buy as well to run all of my equipment.

What's great about it: 3 HDMI inputs, 7.1 audio, calibration mic
What's not so great: ?
I had to choose between this one and the Pioneer. I chose this based on price and added features. 3 hdmi inputs are great. the auto calibration is great. I am running my dish network hd reciever through it, also my new Samsung blu-ray player the 1500 series. I am running them into my 3 year old VIZIO 37 inch. It works fine going into my DVI connector. all features work fine, I repeat it works going to DVI connection. you get great value for your money and you wil not be mad if you buy this one.

What's great about it: Bravia Sync and auto calibration
What's not so great: lots of useless inputs: NO UPCONVERSION
If you have Sony Bravia Sync products, you want to try your hardest to buy others--these work awesome together and will save some time with setup. I bought this unit because A) it was onsale B) I thought, it being a 7.1 with 3 HDMIs, that I could grow into it. Well, this will force me to grow a little prematurely.
First, the auto-calibration worked perfectly, and I have no complaints with the audio (I have 4 speakers, two front, two back). I have a few qualms with the video aspect, but I can partially blame myself because I didn't do enough research to know that this unit doesn't UPCONVERT. I didn't know what this meant until I tried to work my DVD with composite video and I couldn't get a picture, only audio.
Long story short, I had to buy another DVD player that upconverts itself (uses HDMI cable).
I would buy a model that handles the video side of 'receivers.'

What's great about it: GREAT price for 3 HDMI in
What's not so great: No Dolby TrueHD
I got this on black friday, and hooked it up the following day. Setup was a little frustrating since you have to change certain settings if you use HDMI along with the Optical inputs. The optical inputs will get priority, so you have to let the receiver know you'll be using both optical and HDMI at different times. If you use a HDMI to DVI connection, it may not output audio at all so UPGRADE YOUR TV. Make sure to read the manual or call customer support before you take it back to the store. Nearly any problem you might have is addressed in the MANUAL. IF ALL ELSE FAILS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! The only thing I don't like is the lack of HD audio decoding. But, the best benefit of that is 7.1, and the only way to output 7.1 is with Blu-ray, and only about 25-30 Blu-ray discs even have 7.1. Nearly all of the newest releases only have 5.1. However, this receiver will output 7.1 through a few other decodings.

What's great about it: Price, Sound Quality,3 HDMI inputs
What's not so great: Auto calibration took a little time
I bought this receiver today during Best Buy's Black Friday sale and I am so happy I went to purchase this. I had an older yamaha without hdmi connections and this was my main reason with wanting a new receiver (I have an Xbox 360, PS3, and Cable box that are all HDMI). I have bose speakers set up and knew they could sound better if I had the right receiver. After some investigating, I found out that since my Blu Ray player was a PS3, it will automatically decode DTS-HD and Dolby HD so I wouldnt need the more expensive receiver. Right after I set everything up, I watched Rambo in DTS-HD and Hancock in Dolby-HD and it is like night and day with my old receiver. I got this bad boy for 200, but even at the regular price I feel it is still a steal.

What's great about it: Pretty easy to set up. Sounds great
What's not so great: Settings are a little hard untill you get used to them
As being one that was looking for a receiver that would give me the HDMI sound it is hard to find a spec on a system that will tell you if it does or not. Well look no further. This system WILL play the lossless audio via HDMI. Now you must know that this reciever DOES NOT decode the HIDEF audio such as True HD or PCM. I have mine hooked up to the PS3 witch DOES the encoding of all HIDEF audio. If you dont have a blu-ray player or DVD player that does not decode the HIDEF audio and thats what you want then this is not the receiver for you. But if you have it then this is a great deal. I bought the 5.1 Yamaha speakers and it is absolutely great. If you do have the PS3 i had to change audio on the PS3 to Linear PCM in the sound settings. You have to do this so that the player decodes the audio and not the receiver. I watched Twister on Blu-Ray and it BLEW my mind on what you miss with just dolby 5.1. This is a great entry level system with great sound like the big boys.

What's great about it: Sound and Build Quality
What's not so great: None
It seems to cover everything necessary for home theater. I miss the separate bass and treble knobs of old but I guess they aren't applicable when setting up multiple speakers and Dolby settings. I love the sound quality and the many, many connection, setup, speaker, and input settings. For $300 I'm stoked to have invested in a receiver that will serve me for at least a decade! If you can find one in stock and need a bargain receiver that handles EVERYTHING this is the best option. I have no idea what a $1000 receiver would have over this; maybe more power but who knows this is all I need. As a side note, the remote is quite functional. I used it to set up my unit on day 1 then chucked it in a drawer in favor of my Harmony 550.

What's great about it: Many inputs, optical audio, HDMI, varying options
What's not so great: none so far
The people with 1 star ratings either didn't research the product or was just unlucky.
I went to BB earlier today to just look around and was planning on buying a subwoofer at the most, but I ended up buying this receiver, with the subwoofer, and it took no time at all to get setup. The longest part was splicing my old surround sound speakers so that I could connect them to the back of this receiver. I still need to look in the manual to figure some things out and some I still am not aware of, like I can't get the TV sound to play through the TV input on the receiver so I have to hook it up through the DVD input.
Other than that this receiver is very easy to setup and get working and works great. I don't expect anything higher than 7.1 in a while so it should be future proof for quite some time and it's something I would definitely recommend to someone looking for a receiver.

What's great about it: 3 HDMI inputs, ease of setup, economical solution
What's not so great: lack of on screen menu
I did a lot of research before choosing this receiver and have been extremely pleased with my selection ever since. Like many people, I had an older 5.1 system that lacked HDTV capabilities, and was looking for something that I could replace my old reciever with and work with my existing speakers. This receiver was a perfect fit. The hookups were spot on, and the sound quality was even better than my original receiver. Hooking up the new HDTV, cable tuner box and new upgrading DVD player was extremely easy due to the HDMI cables.
Here is the secret...make sure your entire system is compatible and on the same level or you will be dissappointed with anything you purchase. Having components that work well together has made all the difference in the world to me. I have a great picture, awesome sound, and an over all superb hometheatre experience with an entire system that has cost me less than what most people will spend on just their television alone.

What's great about it: 3 HDMI Inputs
What's not so great: HDMI Inputs Don't Always Work
I bought this receiver for the 3 HDMI inputs, but I returned it because the HDMI inputs only work if you plug in EVERYTHING with HDMI. I tried to output the HDMI to my TV with an HDMI to DVI, and none of the HDMI connections to my components worked. It's due to some bizarre Sony software called "HDMI Active Intelligence." So unless you're plugging in everything with HDMI, the receiver won't work with the other HDMI connections.
