"I got this player a couple of days ago after reading all the reviews on it and of several other similar models. The picture is excellent with the upconvert feature. It was simply plug and play. Using the same disc, I compared the picture quality of my very old Sony DVD player where the max output was through the S-Video cable, and the difference is amazing. I hooked it up to my 46 inch Toshiba Regza through an HDMI cable to take advantage of the upconvert to 1080P resolution. I just wish they included one of those cables with it instead of the useless A/V cable. Why buy an upconvert model and hook it up with the old yellow, red, and white A/V cable? And with HDMI, the data is digital, so it is either going to work or it isn't. It's not like a $60 Monster cable is going to work any better than the ones I got for less than $5 each. It made somewhat of a difference with old composite or component cables as the expensive ones were usually higher quality, but with HDMI, there really is no need for the $40-80 cables. Sony could easily have included one of those instead of the other cable.

But overall, I am very pleased with the player. The picture is amazing, and I like how it remembers where you stopped playing a disc. I was playing around with it, and watched portions of a couple of discs, and it picked back up right where I left off. No more of the annoying task of finding which chapter of a DVD you were in, and then trying to fast forward to where you actually were.

I highly recommend this model to anyone looking to get a great player at a reasonable cost, yet isn't quite ready for the jump to BluRay just yet."

"Ive had this DVD player for quite some time now. Wow, It is a great DVD player. The Picture quality is great and crisp. The sound is great and it makes my Living Room shake. The Set up is really easy as I hooked up my Rocketfish HDMI cable. The upconversion is great. If you have a DVD player, You dont need to upgrade. But if you dont want to join the Blu-Ray mainstream, then this is the DVD player to go. Overall, Recommened!!"

What's great about it: 1080p upscaling (with HDMI)
What's not so great: Feels flimsy

"I first tried it on my 32" Toshiba with the coaxial cable that came with it playing LOTR: The Return of the King. I wasn't happy at the picture as the TV can only detect a 480i signal with the coaxial cable. The movie was heavily pixelized IMO. Sauron's armies and the Fellowship looked smeared/smudged...but when I connected this player and the TV with a not-a-rip-off upscale HDMI cable, voila...the difference was so huge it felt like watching LOTR in big screen, the sound is crisp too. The TV was also able to automatically adjust the output to 1080i (the max for my 720p/1080i TV). If my TV was a 1080p, it would have been better.

Overall, I like the upscaling (with HDMI) of this player."

Excellent upconvert player 11/30/2008

"We've had this for a few days now. We just bought our first high def TV and when we watched dvd's on it with our old player we were very disappointed. So we went out and bought this upconverting player. WOW! What a difference! The primary reason we went with the Sony is that we got a Sony Bravia TV and they are supposed to be able to sync with each other. I still haven't figured out how to get this to work as I really don't know too much about what this is supposed to do. However, I can tell a HUGE difference in picture quality with TV show dvd sets. We have several MASH seasons on dvd and they look great on this player. Although you can tell it's not high def, it still looks crisp and sharp. Not too bad for a series filmed in the 70's! Movies look great - as expected - especially the Pixar and Dream Works. The sound is good and gives you several surround options from which to choose. It was quite easy to hook up and we had it set up in no time at all. Overall, this is a good, basic player that really gets the job done. You could spend more money on a player with more bells and whistles, but why do that when this one will do everything just as well for half as much?!"

What's great about it: Has an excellent DVD "leave off" memory
What's not so great: None so far that I can think of

"I've had this DVD player for roughly three months now, the third upconverting DVD player I've owned. The first was a Phillips that broke down on me after about 15 months. The second was a Toshiba that stopped operating after I apparently hit some button or other on the remote. I picked this player up after the same Toshiba model met my "Two strikes and you're out" motto for electronics. I've had absolutely no problems with this one as of yet.

What has impressed me the most thus far, outside of the very good quality of the upconversion (it is currently hooked to a 32" Sharp Aquos 1080p HD LCD with a Rocketfish HDMI cable connection), the one thing that has stood out in my mind from the other two is that it cleans up TV series DVDs. I've noticed that, strangely, Joss Whedon series DVDs (Firefly, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) that are played on an HDTV tend to have motion blur from what I'm assuming is a byproduct of the upconvert process. This Sony, however, seems to wipe that away. I've rewatched some Firefly episodes and am currently watching the Angel series with a friend; it seems to completely eliminate this annoyance on my TV.

The memory capacity (where you left off on a previously-viewed DVD) is surprising. I'm not sure how many disc's worth of memory it has this way, but I've popped in a DVD that I hadn't watched for a while after watching a good number of others, and it starts out where it left off...a minor annoyance for TV DVDs but still impressive that it remembers after many other discs have been watched.

Finally, the upconversion itself is quite good. While watching anything FX-intensive...well, that's where you can tell this thing really shines. One of my personal FX benchmarks for any HDTV is Star Wars: Episode III due to the graphics-heavy nature of the movie, and watching that movie on this player is a dream. Comparing the picture quality to the Blu-Ray discs I play via my Sony PlayStation 3, this player is a minor step down in picture quality. To me, it's just that good.

Very pleased with this purchase. Even so, as a former sales guy for the now-defunct Sharper Image and seeing how many things went wacky in short order, I still recommend the BB extended warranty to cover anything that goes haywire."

"I bought this DVD player as a replacement four months ago. It has given excellent performance. After recently purchasing a Sony KDL-32XBR6 1080p HDTV, I replaced the S-Video cable with an HDMI cable. There was a noticeable improvement in picture quality due to the upscaling capability.

My one small complaint is that discs load slowly, slower than the DVD player this one replaced.

Overall, this is a great DVD player and a good value for the $80 price."

What's not so great: Buying the wrong HDMI cable, not so great.

"I have only owned this for two days. It works good. I just watched a good movie. I made the mistake of buying a Monster HDMI cable, the most expensive one at $140. Mistake. I hooked it up to my Sony Bravia 40" HDTV. When I tried to use the HDMI cable, it kept saying "Invalid Format". I tried to mess with the tv and dvd for a couple of hours. I also went on line looking for answers for a couple of hours. Still, I couldn't get the HDMI to work. The DVD worked fine when hooked up to the composite video, stereo, audio cable supplied with the DVD machine. I ended up taking the Monster HDMI cable back and getting a Dynex HDMI cable for $60. Now, my HDMI works fine, no issues. Lesson learned. Just because the cable is expensive doesn't mean it is better. Other than that, I like my new DVD machine."

What's great about it: good price, looks nice, quiet when playing and clear picture
What's not so great: cables are way too short/ remote bigger than my last one

"I previously owned a memorex dvd player( was given to me as a gift) I really liked it and had it for 4 years. When it died, I had fully intended to buy the same thing but when I looked at the reviews, I was surprized to see how terrible they were. It seems I was lucky that it lasted as long as it did. Sony got great reviews, but the one thing that was never metioned in them was how short the cables were. Luckily my father had extra long ones, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to use it.Also, the remote was bigger than my last one (memorex) but I guess I'll just have to get use to it"

"I absolutely love it. If you have an HDTV with an old DVD player and want to get more out of your TV I highly recommend this unit. For 80 dollars as opposed to Blue Ray units starting at 250 dollars you cant beat it. You will be amazed at how wonderful your old dvds look. Great Buy!"

"If you have a 480p upconversion DVD player, stay with that, I didnt see any improvement from my 480p DVD player to this 1080p DVD player. I do have a 1080p TV so I can tell if there was any difference. Im very particular about video quality, so if there was anything beneficial to buying this Id recommend. If anything, hold out for prices to drop on the blu-ray players. This player is still a nice player, but dont buy this to upgrade.j"
