What's great about it: Easy to set up What's not so great: Nothing
"It has an on screen menu that's real easy to use it puts out a lot of sound the mic is real easy to use so you can set the speakers it has 2 sub inputs great for blu ray audio I would recommend to get this over pioneer and don't pay the high price for Denon when you can have the same quality at a cheaper price."

What's great about it: The SOUND! Ability to have up to 11 speakers for Home Theater. 2nd Zone. What's not so great: Only 2 HDMI inputs
"While shopping around, it became clear that all salesmen who know audio think Yamaha is the best. Now I know why.
The quality and clarity of the sound is just great in this price range, but what really makes this a winner is the flexibility and built in Yamaha sound fields. You'll need to have at least 7 speakers (plus a subwoofer) set up as 5.1 plus another set Yamaha calls Presence Speakers, which sit above and to the side of the standard L & R fronts. When you do you can make your set up sound exactly the way you want. (Plus you could still add 2 more speakers and another subwoofer for a 7.2 + 2 set up.)
My only hestation was only 2 HDMI inputs, 3 would have been better."

What's great about it: DTS-HD, True-HD, sound quality, 8 preouts What's not so great: only HDMI inputs
"I bought this receiver to update an old 5.1 Yamaha receiver (used as pre-pro) that I've had for 8 yrs. I needed something for @ $500 that offered HDMI capability, has preouts for all channels and the newest sound decoders. The front runners were the usual suspects, Yahama, Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer, and Sony. I ruled out the sony because to me they can be a little harsh sounding and the THD is %.1. The Denon only has 1 preout, although it does have 4 HDMI inputs and video pass through capability, comes in handy when you want to watch something but don't want to turn on the tower of power to do it. That leaves the Pioneer and the Onkyo. I decided on the Yamaha for a few reasons. 1) It's the heaviest of all the pack, 32 lbs, with pioneer coming in second at 29 lbs. 2) Yamaha is known for more natural sound, 3) it has a 2nd sub output to wake your neighbor's neighbors. 4) It was the cheapest of the pack, around $70 less than Pioneer/Sony and $120 less than the Denon. 4) it has preouts for all channels. The Pioneer can produce a very nice sound stage but I needed to stay inside of my budget and also at the time they didn't have any in stock.
I've only had for a couple days but so far so good. Sound is very natural and enveloping. The picture quality is o.k, Ive gotten better picture from Onkyo TX-SR706 but the sound is not as clean. For me the unit doesn't get hot at all but that may be because I'm only using the receiver to power L&R Back, all other channels are amplified. Bass is tight with little to no distortion in quality. Most of the DSP's are usable, why people need so many DSP's is beyond me. The receiver is very quiet and the froint panel lights are not as distracting as the bright lights from some units. The remote is not laid out very well and looks a little on the cheap side. I'll give better review after after a couple of weeks of use.
Equipment: Samsung 40" Plasma (1080p capable), Anthem MCA 20, Anthem MCA 30, Sony DVD being replaced with Marantz BD7003, PS3, Wii, AVS 2000 Voltage Stabilizer, HTS 5100 line conditioner, audioquest viper interconnects, Paradigme Reference Studio 80, Polk Csi40, Polf Fxi30 (x4 for surrounds), Carver Sunfire True Sub MK IV"

What's great about it: Excellent Sound quality, stylsih design, 7.1 capable, HD Sound What's not so great: bulky, but all receivers are. only 2 HDMI inputs, a bit confusing to setup
"Now I'm not as knowledgable about receivers as I am the other items I've reviewed, but this is a very nice product. The quality of sound is astounding and goes very well with my Bose speakers. The biggest downside is that it only has 2 HDMI inputs. 3 would have been perfect. One for my bluray player, one for my Xbox 360, and one for an HD cable box. I probably will just run the HD cable box directly to the TV, rather than through the receiver. So for me, it's not that big of a deal. Remote feels kinda cheapy, but not that big of a problem if you have a universal like I do. Overall, an excllent receiver that will keep you up to date with sound technology for a several years to come."

What's great about it: Easy setup, auto calibration, 7.1+DTS Master Audio What's not so great: only 2 HDMI Inputs
"The fact is, you are getting a 7.1 capable receiver that supports DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD for around $500. Trying getting that in another receiver and you will be looking for a while. The auto-calibration mic that you plug in is perfect and adjusts the speaker volumes individually for your room (including the subwoofer). I have used the auto calibration many times, as I have changed speakers multiple times throughout the year and need to adjust them accordingly. The DTS-HD sounds incredible. I actually base my Blu-ray purchases on the audio track because of this. If it doesn't have it, I normally don't buy it. I'll wait for the next edition. Only downside, 2 HDMI inputs. When you have an Xbox360, PS3, HD Cable or Satellite, you have to choose which gets HDMI audio. Other than that, you are getting a wonderful product that performs perfectly and looks great. I can't imagine buying anything else at the moment."

What's great about it: DTS Master , Dolby Digital HD and PLUS for Blu-Ray. What's not so great: Not Good for 2ch Stereo Sources Like CD's
"I bought this receiver in May 2008 to replace my aging Yamaha HTR receiver that had Pro-Logic and Dolby Digital only. No DTS. This was a good upgrade considering I moved up to DTS Master and Dolby Digital HD for Blu-Ray. However I have alot of CD'S and this receiver just don't cut it sound wise in 2 channel stereo. I have tried ever setting and even Pure Direct mode. It has a reflective bouncy sound that gets a little to bright after half volume. The owners manual is hard to understand. YAPO is awsome for speaker setup, just set up the mike and after a few minutes the system is ready to use. There could be more HDMI inputs considering the price of this unit. Overall if you want a good 7.1 receiver for Home Theater use only, then this receiver might be for you. The remote control is little hard to use and not of good build quality. "CHEAP PLASTIC""

What's great about it: 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 / 910w of power is more then enough. CINEMA DSP system A+ What's not so great: Set up. Yamaha should offer a work shop for this.
"I was going to just purchase an entry level AV Receiver but after researching found that I would be better off with one that will accommodate my needs for upgrading in the near future. The Yamaha RX-V663 had all the features that I would need. The advanced set up was a little intimidating, but unless you have a huge theater room just plug and use as set up from the factory. Yamaha should include the "Banana Plugs" with this unit for easy conection of the speaker wires (see page #16 of owners manual). All-in-all this is a great product from Yamaha.
Below is a video I found from one owner on the web."

What's great about it: Sound quality, numerous inputs, zone 2 capability, customizable sound distribution What's not so great: Needs better description of: features of remote (buttons), differences between zone2 and A/B speaker functions.
"This unit replaced a 24 y/o Sony stereo receiver (that's still working BTW). I needed 7.1 sound capabilities for home theater as well as professional, digital pipe organ. The numerous inputs greatly facilitated hooking up CD and DVD player, HDTV, iPod, Rodgers A678 organ, tape deck and turntable. Having a remote capable of controlling all these features is quite convenient. I'm even able to use the Zone 2 as antiphonal speakers for the organ in a separate room. Professional systems with these capabilities cost over $2K. I've yet to use the auto-setup to balance the 3 sets of speakers and subwoofer and the ability to manually adjust the volume of each speaker will come in very handy. My only complaint is the lack of a good description of Zone 2 setup and some of the features on the remote control (some buttons are not described at all).
BestBuy online messed up the extended warranty and I ended up with two of them. Right now, the credit card folks are dragging their feet in giving me credit for one of them. I definitely recommend buying the extended warranty but do it in the store, when you pick up the unit (even if you order online). Nonetheless, the BestBuying experience was great and I will continue to purchase online and pick up in the store.
Bottom line: I WOULD definitely buy this unit again."

What's great about it: Zone2, great for the iPod. Beautiful audio What's not so great: Odd connector arrangement, only 2 HMDI inputs
"The audio setup was easy and did a great job at balancing my existing 5.1 setup. This Rcvr was an upgrade from a 4 yr/old Sony. The improved sound made the whole upgrade worth it.
Yamaha sells an iPOD adapter, but I just used a cheap iPod-to-RCA plug adapter and plugged it into the CD connectors. Plugged my Russound interface into the Zone2 output, set Zone2 to CD, and bingo - iPod music throughout the house.
The distance between the component video DVR and the audio DVR connectors was a big stretch for integrated cable. Yamaha should locate the audio connectors closer to the corresponding component video connectors."

What's great about it: decodes the latest HD sound (dolby trueHD and dts-hd master audio) What's not so great: directions are not that user friendly, could use a few more hdmi's in's and out's, needs less analog connections
"i really like this receiver. i had a little bit of trouble shooting to do in order to get the dolby trueHD to work when watching the blu-ray version of "300" on my sony 350 series blu-ray player. (everything is connected via hdmi)the receiver kept putting the sound format into pcm mode instead. what i ended up having to do, is in the sony blu-ray player menu, under audio settings, where it says BD Audio Setting, normal operation is in the MIX setting, instead choose Direct setting. after doing this, it finally worked and sounded awesome! i purchased this receiver on sale for $399.00. what a great buy."

What's great about it: price is great for what you get out of it What's not so great: the only bad things i could pick out are very minor...remote, none modern design, only 2 hdmi inputs
"I have worked with audio equipment for the past 2 years and have found this receiver to be very good for the price. It come with the auto calibration which is good for a basic adjustment of speaker setting...from the auto calibration you can then tweak the settings to your preferences. 7 channel enhancer allows your mp3 player to sound near cd quality. You WANT to buy this receiver though because it allows for True-HD which means it will decode blu-ray in high-def. audio which is very nice. You wont find one that does this below $500. The HDMI allows for analog as well as digital video and audio to pass through with current HDMI 1.3 available.
I do wish it had more HDMI inputs on the back, but not a big deal I can work with what i got for paying just $524.99 Dont think about it, just buy this receiver!"

What's great about it: Easy to Use Remote, Great sound! What's not so great: Wish it had more HDMI outputs and iPod connection
"I purchased this at Best Buy in Rapid City, which was glad to do an online price match from Bestbuy.com. I had originally purchased another brand of receiver with Klipsch speakers and because of additional 20% off this weeekend and $250 speaker package with Klipsch, I returned it to get this receiver. The remote is so much more user friendly than the other brand. I love that you do not have to point the remote at the receiver, which makes it really convenient and more confortable depending on your listening position.( I watch most of my movies in bed.). Auto set up was a breeze and worked 1st time I tried it. Sound quality seems as good as other more expensive brand. I like all the different sounds and the Set buttons are a nice feature. (I havent used them yet.) Some people do not like the manual, but I think it is fairly clear. Truly the best way to compare this is to buy something else that is much harder to use and then try the Yamahas. I am going to stick to Yamaha from now on whenever possible. I tired of buying things and returning them because the do not perform as expected. This receiver is a keeper!"

What's great about it: Great sound quality and price What's not so great: Only 2 HDMI inputs
"This is a great receiver for the price. It supports every audio format, including the latest "HD" formats for blu-ray etc. The Auto setup and calibration works VERY well, my speakers sound balanced without having to spend a lot of time tweaking them manually.
The inputs are nice and setting them up in the menu was intuitive enough - however I found it easier to just get into the menu and set them up rather than trying to navigate the somewhat overly complex manual. It will also convert analog signal from component (up to 1080i) and RCA to digital and send it across the HDMI to the TV. However it does not upconvert the image to 1080p - it simply sends it to the TV as a digital version of the origonal resolution (i.e. if you are watching a DVD in 480p it sends to the TV in 480p). Personally I don't mind as my TV will upconvert those sources anyway.
My only real concern is that there are only 2 HDMI inputs. Granted, I only need 2 and there is another one on the TV itself, but for some this could be a limiting factor. A simple solution to this would be to get an auto HDMI switcher - they are not expensive and would allow for more devices if necessary.
Overall I am very pleased with this receiver and highly recommend it for people looking for a good value on a moderate home theater system that won't break the bank."

"I read the reviews and was extremely impressed. You don't find so many consistent reviews across the Internet anymore these days. I replaced a good, but 7 year old Sony, and the first 10 seconds of turning on the Yamaha I knew I made the right decision. Very impressive! Do not hesitate to purchase this item. BTW: I found the Ipod adapter for $55 and it works awesome!"

What's great about it: sound, the many features What's not so great: instruction book needs to be simplified
"I purchased this a week ago and I love the upgraded features. I like the fact that it's easy to connect to the HDTV and cable box with a HDMI cables. I like the fact that it comes with a mic and calibrates the speakers for top sound. Sometimes I did find the instruction book a pain to figure out because to do a function it makes you go to a few different pages to get an answer. One more thing. If you have a older DVD/ VCR combo you still need to connect the video cable to the television but you can connect the audio to the stereo. I tried to connect the video cable to the stereo and I couldn't get a picture when I tried to program the DVD/ VCR clock."
