A receiver that delivers
07/26/2008

What's great about it: HD audio
What's not so great: Owner's manual can be too much to read
"What I like: 1. The abillity to decode HD audio so if you have blue ray player this will be a nice feature.. 2. When paired w/ my definitive speakers the duo produced a beautiful sound.
What I hope: 1. More digital connections and less of the analog
I have this receiver for almost 90 days now and so far I am enjoying it, considered the Denon but opted for this one, I would say I made the right choice."

Worth It

"I was a little hesitant to purchase it after downloading the instruction manual...fairly long and a little scary if you are not good at this stuff. But after purchasing and connecting it it took only about an hour to set it up and get used to it. The sound is great even without the best speakers. I still haven't used Zone 2 yet but plan on getting a Zune MP3 player and setting it up to work this zone. The YPAO feature worked great, just make sure you keep everything quiet like they say. Still need to spend more time fine tuning the system but am very pleased and cant wait to see what it sounds like with higher quality speakers."

Excellent Receiver with Lots of Special Features

What's great about it: Built-in menu system, easy nagivation, great sound, On-board decoding for HD audio from Blu-ray/HD-DVD movies, powerful
What's not so great: Only 2 HDMI inputs, Lots of RCA inputs that no one will ever use, $100 dollar IPOD dock not included, bad remote
"I bought this for my HD equipment. I have the Klipsch Quintet SL system with the Sub-12 and am amazed at the sound quality, for Blu-ray/HD-DVD movies, for my DVDs, for my games, and for my music collection. This has on-board decoding for every kind a sound source (Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD just to name a few).
This is a 7.1 receiver that has the ability to become a 9.2 receiver. 2 Subwoofer Outputs for 2 Subwoofers, and a Zone 2 for running 2 different zones of sound (outdoor speakers) while still running sound to your surround sound. They have an IPOD dock optional accessory you can purchase for $100 bucks!! A little steep. Tons of connectivity on back except only 2 HDMI inputs which is disappointing if you have more than 2 things that use HDMI.
Remote is a little cluttered. I use a Harmony remote to control everything and it's just alot easier. Overall, great receiver, easy to setup and use, simple calibration for any room, and great price for what you get in a very future-proof receiver."

What's great about it: price, features
What's not so great: needs another HDMI port and less RCA
"So far I have been extremely pleased with the sound and quality ..... I bought the iPod attachment WOW ... sounds awesome. This receiver may a bit much for NON-audiophiles but for the money it's a steal. You swayed me from other makes and I'm glad I listened."

What's great about it: Plenty power, HDMI connections, Excellent Sound
What's not so great: None yet!
"I bought this receiver to pair with a set of Klipsch SL-5's and a 10" powered sub. I got everything wired up, and I am very impressed. The YAPO feature really work's. I also like the on screen display for setting it up, or just making changes. I couldn't even look at the other receivers out there cause I was on a budget. I must say that I can't imagine what a super High end receiver sounds like, cause this one is simply amazing!"

What's great about it: Sound, Power, No Over heating, and Clarity
What's not so great: Nothing so far
"I've had this receiver for about two months now, and i love it. I was back and forth between the onkyo 605 and this one. I just took a leap of faith with this one because it was so new. Not too many people had reviewed this product yet. But i love it and it really pushes my infinity tower speakers and surround. sounds sooo good. Also get a good sub to it completes the whole system. If i had to do it again i would do it over and over again. Love it."

What's great about it: on board dolby True-HD and DTS HD MASTER decoders
What's not so great: 2 HDMI inputs, bad remote
"At $500 this unit offers a lot of things that used to be available only on receivers over $1000, mainly decoders for the new losless surround formats, hi-current, and HDMI inputs for audio and video. If you need 3 HDMI inputs look into the new Pioneer VSX-1018 receiver that is already available for $650, it's another great receiver with features that used to be found in their Elite line only."

What's great about it: Compatable with almost any sound compression output type.
What's not so great: Only 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output.
"Completely awesome reciever. It is a little on the heavy and bulky side, but I dont lift it very often. The HDMI ports and the pure input button make this ideal for my home entertainment system. The reciever delivers optimal performance and sound quality to all of my speakers in my 7.1-channel system. If you have Blu-ray there might be better recievers out there, but for the money this one CAN NOT BE BEAT."

What's great about it: full HDMI uncompressed audio passthrough
What's not so great: the worst remote control design EVER
"Very nice receiver. Great features with good sound. Yamaha is one of the only manufacturers right now to allow the full uncompressed audio contained in some blu-ray films to be passed through to the speakers without any alteration and this device does that.
The interface is a bit clunky and the remote control is the worst designed remote I've ever used. Aside from those two things, I'd recommend it. The remote has separate on and off buttons, so if you plan to use this device with a universal remote then you'd better be willing to get a Harmony remote in order to make it work correctly, for some extra $."

What's great about it: On screen display, customization ability, Yapo
What's not so great: none, that i have experienced
"This unit is great! I paired this unit with Klipsch speakers; Quintet III, Sub-10, and B-2 bookshelf speakers. The sound is simply astounding. In my opinion it puts Denon in its place, I co-owend a Denon for the last 3 years, not bad but not great either.
The on screen display is a God send! This option makes customizing your unit a breeze. The YAPO is also a nice touch, put the mic where you want the sound and the system will take care of the rest. The "scene" selection is perfect for a quick set up for what you want to do from watching a movie to playing the wii.
I have not seen any signal degridation between this receiver and my tv. Granted I use components off of a standard DVD player. My recomendation is to plug the video direct into the TV and use the optical cables for the sound.
All in all a beutifull machine well worth the money and time to set up. Keep the manual handy is what I recomend. You will not be disapointed if you buy this!"

Less Than Perfect

What's great about it: Phenomenal CD playback, enormous volume capability
What's not so great: Sound lacks in movie playback, destroys video signal
"SYSTEM: LG 42PC50 television, Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player, Yamaha RX-V663 receiver, Infinity Beta Series speakers. Yamaha is a great product, though it still lags behind the giants like Denon and Harman/Kardon. I bought this receiver to replace a defective Harman/Kardon AVR247. I heard that Yamaha was "the way to go" so I figured that I would give it a try. So I got home and plugged it in, sat back, cranked the volume and pressed play. And was instantly disappointed. There just isn't the definition of sound that the other machine had. Playing Gladiator's DTS-ES mix on the AVR247 was almost scary, but when it is played on the RX-V663 the sound was largely dumbed down. One might think that a Dolby Digital mix was being reproduced, not the DTS-ES one! Sure, Yamaha's Natural Sound technology allows for very low levels of distortion, but that may be due in part to the fact that you can't hear most of what should be played. Also, being as though my audio is derived from an HDMI cable that runs for my Blu-Ray player to the receiver, and then to the television, some of the picture quality is actually robbed. Where it used to not bother me to watch an up-converted DVD, it now does. There is a much more pixelated and blotchy appearance. However... when I put a CD in, I was in complete glory. The sound reproduction was virtually flawless. Every item on the CD track was perfectly played and emphasized. It felt like being at a concert. That does not, however, change the fact that the key usage for a home theater system is movie-playback. At least for me. That's why I am leaving right now to exchange the Yamaha for a Harman/Kardon again."

What's great about it: Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA HDMI Switching and ofcourse the sound
What's not so great: The remote is a little difficult but if I read the instructions I am sure it will be ok
"This receiver is unbelievable. I have a Panosonic plasma and a PS3 and whether watching bluray or Burn out paradise city, the sound is simply incredible. The tech in this receiver is beyond belief. Buy this receiver and you will not think twice about it."

What's great about it: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD master audio!!!
What's not so great: only 2 HDMI inputs but thats cool
"You will not find any other receiver in the market right now that will decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio for this price. Up until this receiver came out only receivers that were over a $1000 would do it. If you don't know what those are, they are the sound formats for blu-ray and HD components to come. The sound on Yamaha receiver are outstanding I definitely recommend to anyone out on the market for a good receiver."

What's great about it: HDMI 1.3 and Upconversion of lesser Video Signals
What's not so great: Non so far
"I bought this reciever to replace a Sony that I had. I like the fact that it has the HDMI inputs and also that it upconverts other video signals to HDMI. This saves me having to change inputs on the TV all the time. I also like the fact that it has the microphone and automatically sets up the speaker settings for you. This unit has awesome sound! I have it hooked to a Bose Acoustimass 10 speaker system. So far this is the best Home Theater Reciever I have owned! You will not be disappointed!"

What's great about it: Best receiver for the money
What's not so great: manual could be easier to read.
"I just purchased this reciever this past weekend and its fantastic. I've never seen or used a nicer reciever especially in this price range. It decodes all the HD formats which is unusal without spending $1000 bucks. I paired this reciever up with a 7.1 polk audio speaker set and it will blow the roof off. If you are using all hdmi1.3 capable components this is a must have. My only complaint is the manual requires and engineering degree to read through it."

What's great about it: Great Sound
What's not so great: 120 page instruction manual
"I purchased this receiver over the weekend and spent most of the day Saturday connecting it and setting it up. Once I got everything hooked up, I was most impressed with the sound quality. I also purchased a set of JBL speakers to go with the receiver. My only gripe is the manual isn't really user friendly for those of us who are not the audiophiles we used to be. I'll probably spend the next week tweaking things to get the sounds I want, especially surround sound from my cable box. Other than the manual being not so easy to follow, this is a great receiver for the money - highly recommended for anyone who wants great sound!!!"

What's great about it: future proofing for HD sound, easy to set components up, on screen adjustments
What's not so great: still new so it is hard to tell ... I guess I would say some many sound choices(I'm not sure if that is a con though)
"I just purchased this yesterday and set it up last night. I have HD cable running thru HDMI and my Xbox 360 on HD component and optic sound. The picture is wonderfull and the sound is very impressive with out and tweaking. This is a very good buy for the $. It'll up convert all you analog signls to HD(I think - I'll have to check the 120 page manual again)."
