"I love this line of cameras by Canon - they are such a nice size. I have no patience with the tiny little "slimline" cameras, with their microscopic buttons that seem to be taking over. Canon has continued to keep their cameras a more realistic size, with a body that actually has some substance to it.
I purchased a Canon SX100IS last year for use at home, and was thrilled with it. I needed a camera for classroom use, but didn't want to spend quite as much. I purchased this A590IS for $129, and honestly, it works just about as well as the higher end camera. It operates basically the same, which is nice for familiarity, and takes very nice pictures.
The display doesn't do the photos justice - it is a bit dull and grainy, but the photos come out very nice.
Grab this one up before it becomes obsolete - it will be a shame when that happens!"

"Excellent product and quality. It has a good recording option and good options. Now, if you want a long distance camera, this is not the one. You would need at 12x zoom at least. Put $50 more and get that one instead."

"I love this camera! For those saying OMG it takes slow pics, well heres an idea: read the manual! You can set it to ISO Hi, which takes super fast pics.
I love all the different settings on this camera. You can set is so it takes great beach, snow, sunset, night, indoor, and many more type of pics. I love the feature for kids & pets. They can be jumping up and down 50 mph, & it still takes a super still pic! Omg, I think i'm in love (: I got this for xmas last night. It's super easy to use. A great buy for the price.
Buy a 2gb memory card with it though, because the 32mb one they supply is terrible. It only gives you like 15 pictures.

Taken in a pitch black room at night, only lighting was from the window and that was almost nothing.
What's great about it: Just about everything. What's not so great: Takes AA batteries, Timestamps on a fixed 24hr format, manual well written but not well organized.
"I've pretty much always wanted a digital camera because you can do alot more with them than a 35mm film camera, that and my camera phone didnt do such a great job on pics. I mean it took them just fine but the quality of the pics wasnt really all that appealing. Sooo... I started looking around at the different brands of digital cameras that are out there. Originally I had settled on one of the Kodak Easyshares to which I went out to BestBuy to buy. When I got there I started looking around, I stopped one of the employees and asked them if they had a memory card to use in the Easyshare that I was after so I could take a look at the quality of the pics. Well, we did that and they looked ok and somehow we ended up doing the same thing with the Canon Powershot A590 IS. Man was that the right thing to do because let me tell you the quality of the pictures between the Easyshare and the A590 IS is a no-brainer. While the Kodak put out good pics the Cannon put out better pics with a much higher quality. As far as a starter camera goes this might not be the best choice because of the varying features but it would definately be ok to use as a starter. Grant it I've only had the camera all but two days I like it alot. My only real griped about it is whats named above in the cons field. Other than that I have no gripes about this camera... it's pretty much all I expected and then some.
Oh, and for the people "reviewers" who are bit**ing and moaning about how the camera takes to long between pics and they miss those precious quick shot moments at weddings or something need to maybe look at the camera a bit more or read the manual. I found this out without even reading the darn thing, in the settings theres a "review" option which can be changed from a fews seconds to off. So lets say you have it set for 5 secs, after taking a pic it reviews it on the LCD for those 5 secs and then the cameras ready for its next shot. But wait, heres the kicker that would make everyone happy if they'd learn to play around with the various functions on the camera or read the manual. If you set the review feature to off you can go from one pic ot the next like its no bodys business. So with it set to off people can take pics and not miss those oh so precious moments they've all been complaining about missing.
May as well start wrapping up this review...
As far as night time pics go please review the picture posted with this review. It was taken in a pitch black room with the only lighting coming from a street lamp outside and even then it wasnt alot of light. So in a pitch black room with nothing but the flash the pic posted is about what you can expect to get and it's a pretty darm good one if you ask me.
Lastly, the Canon PowerShot A590 IS also takes ok video. See the linked 2min video that I took of my turtle, It's just something I was messing around with after I got home. The video might not have the hottest of qualities but keep in mind that it was shot at a very close range and I havent read the manual yet so I dont know if I could improve on the quality of the videos.
Now for a very final note, regardless of wether or not you decide to go with this camera or another you should buy atleast a minimum of a 2gb SD card if you plan on shooting video & want to take / save a TON of pics."

"Good picture quality. Like the manual controls. Smart zoom lets you use digital zoom at lower picture qualities with no loss of quality. Eats alkaline batteries have not tried it with rechargeable ones. In movie mode once you press the shutter the focus and exposure is set so you can't use the zoom without losing focus. Have used it in very low light with very good results. Fits in my shirt pocket when the other camera I was considering would not. Overall I would recommend this camera but with a warning about battery life."

"I bought this camera to take pics at a dear friends wedding. The camera takes so long in between pics that I found it difficult to take pics of the bride walking down aisle and I even missed the kiss. There were so many inpromptu moments I missed this weekend beacuse the camera is so slow when taking pictures. My 14 day return window ended toaday but still going to see if I can return it tomorrow."

"I previously had a Sony Digital camera and switched to Canon, thinking that it was a quality brand. Was I wrong! This takes a long time to take a picture (after you snap a pic until its ready to take another pic), which makes taking pictures of young kids next to impossible! There is not an auto flash, which I found completely annoying. Get everyone ready for a picture, go to take it and then you realize you need to put your flash up!! UGH! The picture quaily isn't bad, when you have ideal lighting. It does take nice outside pictures. Sorry, but I am on going back to Sony!!!"

"I have last years version of this camera. The 570. The only bad thing about it, I must say, is that the focus it a little annoying. There are some subjects that I really want to take pictures of that it simply refuses to focus on. I have, though, gotten some great pictures with it. When it wanted to cooperate with me :). It does take it a little while to load to take another picture, and it eats up reg AA batteries like I don't know what [I definitely recommend lithium batteries for this one], but I love it and take it everywhere I go."

"Bought this camera and was very disappointed in the process speed. By the time the camera recovered to take another photo, it would be all over. So if you want to take photos of something happening in fast pace this camera is not for you. It does take great photos and is great for still scene's.
