What's great about it: Active sub, 3 digital inputs, 2 hdmi in, and Price
What's not so great: Subwoofer cable, cheap speaker wire

"Real easy set up the hardest thing was concealing the wires. It comes with a real receiver which is nice rather then a lot of the other home theater in a boxes (HTIB) have built in DVD players. Another great feature is the ability to change the speakers down the road. A lot of the other systems have funky connections in the back so you can only use their speakers. Really great sounding system would recommend to anyone!

only recommendation would be to buy another subwoofer cable for it and maybe 16 gauge speaker wire if you have extra money to spend"

What's great about it: Very affordable, and very loud.
What's not so great: sub-par subwoofer,

"I purchased this system along with a Panasonic plasma tv, Xbox 360, and PS3. (Provided you have the appropriate cables, setup is not too daunting.) I quickly hooked everything up, (hdmi for video, optical for audio) and my first impression of this system was very positive. Games and blu ray movies sounded fantastic and had refreshing atmosphere and power compared to traditional tv speakers. Then I put in my favorite concert dvd (R30-Rush 30'th anniversary tour) and the dissapointment began. The highs and mids were adequate if not superior, however the subwoofer produced the muddiest and most undefined bass I have personally ever heard. I'm a drummer, so I like to hear the bass drum LOUD, and clear. But this woofer seemed to turn the powerful drum into mush. So, if you are buying this system in large part for music playback, this subwoofer will certainly dissapoint you. Otherwise this system is very satisfactory but nonetheless would benfeit from a totally new woofer, I recommend Klipsch. I you are not buying this in the least for music playback, then it is a trmendous value and definately worth purchasing. Also, if you are concerned about complicated receiver functions, there is no need to worry as long as you refer to the manual upon initial connection."

"I spent months picking a stereo system, reading reviews, listening to different systems at big box stores, and ultimately settled on this one.

The reason is simple: this 5.1 system sounded better than any other I tested, even those that cost twice as much! The sound quality of this system is simply amazing at this price. You could drop 3x as much on a Bose system and be less satisfied.

Pros:

3 HDMI inputs with full 1080p pass through. Have a lot of devices? No worries. You can connect a game console, a cable box, and a DVD player, all with zero loss of resolution and picture quality. There are more expensive systems that lack this feature. However, the audio pass through from HDMI cable will goes directly to your TV, meaning you have to run a separate digital sound cable from your DVD player or CableBox. Not that big a deal as optical and digital cables are cheap these days, but it does mean one more cable to worry about.

Amazing sound quality. This system has a powered sub woofer, which is a MUST for high quality, deep bass. Other systems in this price range lack this feature. The speakers are solid wood construction. Although not glamorous, they feel so much better than plastic, and will still be around when cheaply made plastic bodied speakers are in a land fill.

The speaker themselves produce accurate, high quality sound, from the highest highs to deep bass. I put them through their paces with both DVDs and music CDs, and everything I threw at them sounded wonderful. (My test included "Hero," "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," and "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi," to test the surround sound processing. For music quality, I tested "The Killers: Sam's Town," "Copeland's Clarinet Concerto," and "Metallica: S&M."). Surround sound processing was great in entertain: surround mode. This system has made watching movies an TV a new experience!

High quality built from the amp to the speakers. Some other systems I considered ran VERY hot (Like the Onkyo HT-SR800). You could feel the heat coming off the amp without even touching it. This system runs a lot cooler, and makes me less worried about it burning out. It also helps the other devices in my audio cabinet stay cool and happy.

Many presets, and a reasonably well designed remote. The remote is functional but not exceptional. One of my few frustrations with the system is it's limited ability to change the speaker presets. You can only switch between a few of them with the remote. I frequently have to change them by hand using the buttons on the front of the amp. I've adjusted to this my making use of the four presets for "DVD watching, TV Watching CD Listening, and Radio Listening" each of which you can assign your own audio presets. Now, depending on what I want to watch, I can hit 1 button and I'm done. My wife loves this feature as she can get a DVD going in about five seconds without headaches!

Cons:

The speaker wire that comes with the set is thin. Spend the cash to get some good 16 gauge wire (and by good, I don't mean overpriced Monster brand wiring!). Any solid 16 gauge wire will work.

This system has exceeded my expectations. I have some quibbles with the remote design, but presets take care of the majority of them. If you want amazing sound from a 5.1 system for under $400, you can't do better. You can even spend twice as much and get less for your money than you do with the Yamaha YHT-390BL."

What's great about it: hooking up was easy, illustrated set up, sound is good
What's not so great: speakers bigger than I thought, especially woofer

"I do like the product, Impressed with the receiver, but Think that the price was a little high now that I look around. I saw it, I wanted it, I bought it within minutes! It was VERY easy on the Best Buy site. I picked it up in the store the next day and had it hooked up that night! Very happy with my purchase."

What's great about it: Good sound for a small room.
What's not so great: Speakers are boxy

"At first I thought that I got a great deal on a system, but the longer that I looked at it and tried to set it up in my house the more I saw the cheapness of this system. The speakers where boxy and didn't work with my speaker stands and the sub woofer is this little box that sits on the floor looking cheap.
So when back to best buy and had the guy set me up with a 6.1 system that I love and a polk speaker system.
It's alway nice to find something cheap but there is always a reason why it is."

Good for Gaming and Movies   08/23/2008
By Collegeboy62 from Downey California

What's great about it: HDMI Cost$, Sound, Features
What's not so great: Not a lot of audio cable. Need to buy additional

"Well first off i got this because a family member told me it was a good system for a beginner. I hooked up my PS3 and Xbox 360 and by far i have gotten complints from my neighbors due to have it very loud i.e.Halo 3 and COD4 so overall it makes BluRay movies sound crips and clear. This product is good overall for gaming and Blu-Ray.
Go get one now dont even finish reading this go NOW!"

Neutered A-B Speaker settings   08/17/2008
By AshmanE from St. Louis, MO

What's great about it: Good sound, easy set-up, lots of options
What's not so great: somewhat muddy sub, A or B speakers, not both

"We were hoping to use this system to pump sound through our new house, and the box advertised A & B speaker outputs.
-
Well, it does have that, but ONLY ONE AT A TIME, NOT BOTH. So, this is very disappointing for our purposes.
-
Sound is decent, but if you're looking for a true multi-room system, I'd look at some other models first. Only 3 stars given our intended application..."

What's great about it: Great sound, nice bass
What's not so great: Needs more digital audio in

"For the most part this is a great buy. Seriously the only thing I wish it had was more digital audio in connectors. it has three now, 2 optical and one coax which is usually more then enough for anyone. All and all this is a great system."

What's great about it: Love the sound, power, looks. Everything I wanted in one nice package.
What's not so great: No set up mic.

"Owned for almost 2 weeks. Have HDTV and DVD player and had system hooked up and running in no time. After going through the set up menu it sounded like I was at the movies with all the thundering sound I wanted. The active sub woofer it great, shaking the whole house and makes you feel like you are in the movie. This is not my first surround system."

Awsome Surround   07/20/2008
By Chuck26 from San Diego, CA

What's great about it: Wonderful sound, small speakers, easy to wire up
What's not so great: Learning to use the controller and all the settings.

"Great sound from this system. We had originally bought the Bose speaker system with the sub and two speakers but when we found out the only way to hook it up was through rca cables, which our new flat plasma didnt have, we took it back and bought this one. The sound that it produces is clean, clear and the sub has its own volume control so it can be set to just where i need it. The construction of the system is what makes it. All of the speakers have wood boxes instead of other plastic speakers....this makes alll the difference!!! The only problem i had was the amount of settings this system has...which is not a bad thing by any means....just a little bit more to get all the sound settings where i needed them. But after i figured it out it was great. Do yourself a favor and spend a little extra on this system (which its really not that expensive for all of the options) Hope this helps."

Great sound for not alot of money   07/13/2008
By Orion12345

What's great about it: Sound, sub has plug in power supply, 120w power per speaker
What's not so great: Manual, manual, manual!

"I just purchased this home theater system and i love it. The sound is good with nice lows and highs. The subwoofer has a plug in power source. This feature is a must because the sub does not drain any power from the receiver.

My only complaint with this system is the instruction manual that it comes with. With a little time you will get the hang of it."

Great sound for little price   07/10/2008
By red88fan from OK

What's great about it: great sound, HDMI connections
What's not so great: none so far

"Purchased this unit on 6-28-08 to replace a 14 year old unit that had quit. Love the ability to connect ipod and use bluetooth (with available attachments). Have a smaller living area so this unit is perfect and sounds great. Setting up the sound was a little tricky but was able to figure it out. If you are looking for a good quality sound system and don't want to spend a ton of money definitely look into this system."

A Solid System for the Patient and Underfunded   07/08/2008
By TheBigGameReviewer from Fort Myers, Fl

What's great about it: Given patience and a little craft, this system can stretch your home theater buck a long long way.
What's not so great: Patience and a little study of the manual is required to maximize functionality

"I'm not a millionaire, and - if you're reading this - you aren't likely one either.
That doesn't mean we aren't entitled to a little condominium quake when the Millenium Falcon passes directly overhead.
I use this system with my XBOX 360 and also run an HD signal through it, and couldn't be happier with it or the price I paid for it.
The most important thing to learn, in order to get the most out of this system, is how to manipulate the soundfields depending on what you're watching, and what you hope to get out of that program. A sport where there's a great deal of ambient noise (a stadium sport) does well with the Entertainment/TV Sport configuation, but that mode doesn't serve a golf broadcast very well, for example.
If you're like me, you'll notice that dialogue in your average movie can be a little overwhelmed by the very adequate powered subwoofer and the attendant surround speakers. Most dialogue in movies comes through the center channel. If you find the dialogue a little thin, turn the center up to +6 or therabouts and the problem will be solved.
The potential for tinkering with this system is endless. If you're looking for a boxed system where you simply need to insert tab A into slot B and its ready to go, this isn't the one. But if you have a pretty good ear for sound, the patience to experiment with speaker depth, distance and configurations, and pair of wirecutters, this is your system.
So save a few bucks, get to tinkering, and see if you can't give your technologically challenged neighbor with the deep pockets' Bose a run for its money."

Great system for the money   07/03/2008
By Racer123 from SoCal

What's great about it: Great quality sound and easy install
What's not so great: Manual hard to understand

"This is a great system. I bought this on a tight budget not wanting to spend the big bucks for an expensive system. out of the box it is easy to install. I installed in like 25 minutes and another 10 fine tuning the cabling and sound output. The sub woofer is very powerful for a 8" and has a true bass sound.
The cons, if there are any, are that for every input, ie: HDMI, component, a/v, you will need an output from the receiver to the TV. Also HDMI does not have audio pass through (but it says that right on the box). My particular setup has both component inputs and a/v inputs, So i need to have a component out and an A/V cable out to the TV.
There are lot of features I will probably never use but I fully enjoy this system and would recommend it to anyone."
