"I had a difficult time setting up the system: the directions and controls are confusing, and the system has labels for functions, e.g. "TV Viewing" which cannot be altered, even when the audio source is actually "DVD".
The single most annoying "feature" is the HDMI "switching", for which the unit has two HDMI inputs, and one output. "Switching" is evidently marketing code for "bait that serves no purpose in an audio system", as all they do is pass the HDMI signal through, and do not pass the audio to the system speakers. Quoting from the product manual, page 14, "Audio signals input at the HDMI jack are not output from any speaker terminals but output from the connected video monitor." They go on to add that, "To enjoy the sound from speakers connected to this unit" you should use an analog or digital connection besides that of the HDMI connection, and then "MUTE THE VOLUME OF THE CONNECTED VIDEO MONITOR" (caps mine). This insensed me... I felt I had been grossly misled just to get me to buy the product. To be fair, the unit packaging does say this "2 HDMI Inputs for High Definition Video Switching (video only)", so it does warn the potential buyer, but only after the reader sees "2 HDMI Inputs". I didn't read any further, nor did the sales staff who helped me purchase the unit, and another who helped me later said he couldn't believe the HDMI inputs weren't used. Well, I tried to, and they didn't work, as the manual spells out (which I must add you would only read after you got it home and spent a good bit of time setting the thing up).
Okay... done venting.
On the positive side, the unit is attractive, the price, though not cheap, is certainly less expensive than many other units, and the sound, when you eventually learn how to coax it out, is wonderful. When my wife's eyes lit up upon hearing it, all was forgiven."

best bang for the buck

What's great about it: Nice system, it's pre-programmed for a a plug and play system What's not so great: The set-up does not include audio cables that are need for HD systems
"I did a lot of reserach for a nice, not going over board, system. I bought this on sale. The only problem I found was that I did not know that the system was 100% plug and play. The system/set-up does not really go into much detail for people that are not familair with home theater system.
I should of first read all of the reviews before I started the set-up. These reviews are great . Read them before getting started. They told me what to expect and what I will need that is not supplied with the system.
The only complaint I have is that Yamaha does not have any extended technical support hours, 8:00am-4:00am, located in Anahiem, Calif. When I called then for the first time I needed to be in front of the unit to get help with trouble shooting"

"Overall the system in okay. I purchased this unit to simplify the wiring and was very disappointed. The HDMI input only passes the audio through the receiver. You need to add a cable for audio. This DOES NOT REDUCE THE WIRING! The wire Yamaha sends is cheap. Yamaha has lost it's quality edge."

What's great about it: Sounds great and not bulky like other theater systems! What's not so great: Needs better instructions for setting up sound settings and how to control other inputs.
"This is the best sounding system for the price. I did alot of research and found this was the best rating system for the price. I have had some problems with trying to set up my speaker settings and sound settings but may need to break down and ask for the help from yamaha. The designe and look is great and the HDMI imputs are what sold me on this system, which helps without having all those extra wires. The optical imput is great if you use a PS3 or other gaming system. The HDMI and Optical need to be used at the same time which i wasnt aware but is not a problem. In a nut shell this is the best system and I am glad I went with Yamaha!"

Awesome system for the money

What's great about it: powered sub, clear sound, lots of settings and options, reciever based so you can add things to the system What's not so great: haven't really found any.
"I researched home theather systems for a while before a friend referred me to this system. I went to best buy and saw it there and bought it a few days later. The sales person price matched for $499.99. After getting everything set up I must say that I was amazed by the sound this system produces. I will also add that speaker placement and volume is very important. If you don't know how to do this, have a friend show you. Like many other people that have reviewed this product, I did replace the speaker wire and I had to buy some additional cables to hook up the HDMI, but it was worth it. This system was worth every penny"

"I did not know that the Receiver would not pick up the audio from the HDMI. As it is you have to have a seperate digital connection to the source for the audio. This defeats the purpose of HDMI. With only 2 optical inputs this unit is very limited. I would have returned it but wife loves the sound and can actually control the TV, DVD Player and the Receiver with the included remote so I'm done."

"I loved the fact that I could get a home theatre in a box without buying a DVD player. I have a bluRay/PS3 and didn't want an inferior DVD player so this component system is great. The sound is customizable with many EQ options to match what is happening on the screen. I cannot wait for this Sunday's NFL Games.
Get different speaker wire. The provided wire is cheap and not enough included out of the box.
Overall, it is a perfect system for those who want an all in one solution without breaking the bank."

"I bought the Onkyo s5100 and had some issues with the receiver. It sounded good, but once in my home we decided the sub was just too big. I landed on the Yamaha because of it's appearance and the quality of the sound. Once we hung the speakers, we were pleased. It has a very clean sound, adequate bass, and looks good next to the flat panel tv."

"Product sounds great in all modes of use and can be arranged in many different ways with the wall and floor mounts that the system comes with. Subwoofer puts out good base but does not overpower the satellite speakers near it. The remote that the system comes with is alittle hard to get used to because of the many functions that it is capable of."

What's great about it: Sounds great all the bells and whistles also expandable What's not so great: Buy speaker wire not enough included. The wire included is cheap thin wire.

"I just bought this system and I love it! The sound is crisp and it makes you feel like you are actually in the movie. The subwoofer is great! All the speakers are double tweetered so it makes the sounds crisper than the cheaper Yamaha System. I was on the fence between this system and the cheaper one but after listening to the two side by side, I found this one to be a lot better. If you are on the fence, spend the extra money because it is worth it! The only drawback about this system for me was the speaker wire included with the system. I put this system in a bigger room so I did not have enough wire for the space I had. I went out to the store and got some thicker wire and found that it is easier to strip and easier to connect. Other than that, I am very satisfied!"

Solid Sound with Nice Features

What's great about it: Great sound with lots of options and features What's not so great: None at this price
"Just completed installing and testing this system and it has excellent sound. I think the keys to surround sound is the center speaker and the subwoofer, and they are both strong in this system. All the speakers sounded crisp and clear. It sounded great right out of the box but it allows you to tweak it if you like. It has good input and output options like HDMI switching and digital audio. I replaced an older surround system and the difference was very noticeable. I'm rewatching a bunch of action movies and hearing things I never heard before."
