What's great about it: Compact & portable
What's not so great: Died 10 months after I got it; WD Customer Service no help
"Worked fine for 10 months and then pffftt! Unfortunately, I'd trusted a lot of important data to this based on WD's reputation and now, without any warning at all, no computer will recognize this drive. Contacted WD customer service - they responded fairly quickly but weren't able to help, like they'd never heard of this happening before. I would avoid this product unless you like expensive paperweights."

What's great about it: Simple plug-in and install
What's not so great: Can't back up my files
"It seemed like a good buy and I needed a hard drive to store my music. I also wanted to back up my computer just in case, because i've had a computer crash before. I didn't know it wouldn't allow me to do a back-up. Also, the Google desktop software will not install properly. It is supposed to do some kind of indexing, but there is always an error message. Other than that, it seems to be working fine right now."

What's great about it: Worked fine for a while
What's not so great: Short life
"This product worked fine initially. I did not use it for several months. When I tried retrieving data after about 4-5 months of none use it was completely dead. The blue light comes on but it does not show up on my desktop as it did before. All data on the drive is lost forever. Not reliable. BUYER BEWARE !"

What's great about it: nothing
What's not so great: everything
"This doesn't work on a Mac Laptop. I have a Macbook pro. and even with a double usb connector this drive will not mount. I tried this on other Mac laptops and it will not mount, The literature says Mac compatible, but it would require an external power supply... but there is no option for that. This barely mounted on my wifes PC laptop. I would skip this if it's being used on a laptop (and isn't that the point of a compact drive). BTW I use Maxtor and Lacie externals w/ no problem."

What's great about it: Ease of use, great capacity, and slim size
What's not so great: wish there was more storage, but then I should have spent more money...lol
"I bought the WD 250 GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive for one reason and one reason only. To backup my files on the Playstation 3 gaming console. I have the 60GB PS3 and I wanted have an external hard drive on hand to give me that extra memory just in case, but my main reason was for backing up my files.
About 6 months after purchasing my PS3 the console froze and I had to reformat my entire system loosing eveything I had saved in the process. 100's of gaming hours were lost and precious saved files were all deleted in order to have my PS3 up and running again.
So in order for that not to ever happen again, I purchased the WD Passport Essential 250GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive to make sure that all my files for my PS3 were safe and saved.
I have 3 accounts on my PS3 and all 3 accounts' files have successfully been uploaded and saved on my WD External HD.
I recommend this for any PS3 gamer who has 100's of hours of gaming and saved files on his/her console and is afraid of the worst. Great HD for a great price."

What's great about it: Sturdy, fast read, can install games into it
What's not so great: The price is a bit steep for what's out there, comes apart.
"I bought this one day to reformat a friend's computer. After using it, I chucked my USB memory stick and began using this ever since. I love how you can install applications into the hard drive and run it on any computer, it's not just a "memory stick." I have to even admit I dropped it a few times and it still works. However, if you drop it it might come apart a little bit but you just need to push it together again. The price is a little steep to what is out there, but it makes up because it's so small and convenient to take anywhere you go. Overall, definitely worth it if you are one of those that uses DVDs or a small memory stick that can't fit all your computer data that you want to keep in case of a computer crash."

What's great about it: small and lightweight
What's not so great: no backup software
"This product does not come with it's own back-up software. Given that VISTA back-up is so error prone, this product did not work on my Vista machine. When I tried to back-up it told me there was not enough room on the disk and I must have at leat 400MB of freespace- which obvioslu there was. I returned it and bought a product that came with it's own back-up software and had no problems backing up."

What's great about it: Price, Dimensions, Capacity, Simplicity
"The product allows you to store a large amount of content especially if you are into music and movies. The single USB cable keeps things simple because the harddrive is powered through that cable and you can protect folders by applying password access. The product is only slightly larger than an iPhone so it's a big space saver compared to the old brick external harddrives. Overall I couldn't be much happier with the product."

What's great about it: Compact, portable, plenty of storage
What's not so great: Software isn't very user friendly
"I purchased this to back up old pictures and music. It works fine, but the software--that says it is REQUIRED to be installed before plugging in the drive--is not user friendly. Once I got the hang of it, it wasn't terrible. But, it is not as easy to use as a flashdrive."

What's great about it: Price, Size, USB Powered
What's not so great: none yet
"I bought this for my work laptop to store pictures and videos for my Sony Vegas projects. The install was a breeze. There was included software stored on the drive that allows you to do "back-ups", etc. I didn't need that so I skipped over it. Instantly the drive was recognized by the laptop and I simply cut and pasted my files over the the ext. HD. In minutes I was done. The USB power is perfect so there is no need for an external power supply taking up space. It's small enough that I can mail to and from my corp. office to give them large video files if needed.
Works great and as advertised!"
