What's great about it: Speaks slow, has alert tone before turn!
What's not so great: Should have gotten it earlier.
"My 62 yrs old mom has been nagging me to find her a GPS, Garmin spoke too fast for her and she did not like the interface of Tom Tom. One thing she really wanted that only existed on older Garmin model. ALERT TONE! the DING DING before a turn to alert her of the imminent turn. This GPS has such alert tone. ALso this GPS speaks SLOW and clear.
This GPS also allows you to 1-touch pick Fastest time, Shortest Distance, More Freeway, Less Freeway with 1 touch right before you start your drive. One of the most intuitive and easy to use. Magellan truely deserve more credit since it's always overshadowed by Garmin and TomTom. I have used it on many routes, I can only say, GET IT!."

Magellan is better than Garmin

What's great about it: It is accurate, easy to use, and the maps are current. My inlaws have a Garmin Nuvi and their maps are horrible.
What's not so great: I paid $225 for mine.
"I bought the 1412 for our trip to Orlando. It was great. It even knew how to navigate throug the parking lots !! My inlaws have the Garmin Nuvi and that thing couldn't even guide them to our condo that was built over 3 years ago."

GPS OR ELECTRONIC MAP

What's great about it: Very accurate and ease route adaptability
What's not so great: misses a turn once in a hundred times, but gets back on track
"This is my second GPS unit. The other was a famous brand and was absolute junk. It couldn't find it's way around the corner. It is very highly praised? I travel from northern Wisconsin to Indianapolis and I can set the 1412 to avoid all the tolls in Chicago. It can't avoid one, but I miss all the others. Believe it or not it saves time not going through the tolls. I have the choice of alternate routes to keep the long drive differant. The detour feature is fantastic, I always have to use it on I-65. The speech feature is a no brainer, why spend all your time looking at your GPS. My radar detector has speech too. I want to see where I am going as I drive mostly at night. Another feature I like is that it shows the names of streets and highways as you pass them. It tells you the time you will get there based on your average speed. It tells you how many miles to go(which can be depressing). There is a page you can go to anytime you are stopped where you can check your average speed, how many average miles traveled in 10 minutes, your lat. / long., average number of satelites(out of 24) being picked up, and a few other statistics. The speech can be many languages, I use British just for fun. There is one fault I discovered.from living up north. If you live in the cold, do not leave it in your car overnight, that is the only fault I have, and that is mine. In my opinion you can't go wrong with a Magellan 1400 series."

What's great about it: A lot of things
What's not so great: product support
"Well my car was broken into and the power cord was stolen. I dare you to find a power cord for a Magellan RoadMate 1412. It has a USB adapter on the end of it as opposed to a round power supply cord and I haven't found one yet. So the GPS sits at home cause it only runs about 2-3 hours without the cord. So long trips are out. Also you must be very careful when you get an AC adapter for it, as it will not charge from a laptop. You need a 12 volt 1 amp charger the .5 amp won't work, remember it charges through a USB port . This unit would not pick up any POIs in Reno or Carson City Nv. When it's working you won't want to be without one and this is a good one. lots of nice things text to speech is not bad. while some street names come out a little funny sounding they are very useful. Guard your power cord and don't get silly like I did. Ouch that hurt. No answer from Magellan yet about how I can get one. Good Luck to you."

What's great about it: Loud and clear voice prompts which also pronounce the street and destination names
What's not so great: Would be nice to have system remember route preferences
"Before buying the Magellen Roadmate 1412 GPS, I read through the customer reviews on various GPS units and was surprised to read some being dismissive about the text-to-speech feature as not a big deal. I personally find the loud and clear voice prompts a really important feature of the GPS unit which helps you to keep your eyes more on the road and less on the GPS. The touch screen is very responsive, but sometimes there is a delay which I think has to do with the refresh rate of the map. The map display is excellent and the GPS quickly recalculates the route when you go off the path. The mount is easy to apply to the windshield but has a bit of play in the 'yaw angle', although nothing troubling. The car charger inserts into the GPS at an odd angle and a message pops up every time the power source is interrupted which can be annoying, but nothing that would sway me away from buying this unit. My biggest gripe or more a wish would be to have a unit that remembers my route preferences. I drive a long commute for work, and use the GPS mainly to find alternate routes during heavy traffic or to seek out nearby gas stations. Also, for some destinations, there is no final instruction to make a right or left into a parking lot, but I suppose that's because it is not a road, so it is not considered necessary, however, if you are looking for a specific building and the address numbers are not that visible, it can leave you confused in trying to find out just where you were suppose to pull off the main road. Instead, it just says, "You have arrived." That said, I don't think anyone looking to buy a GPS should be expecting it to cook you eggs and bacon in the morning. It does what it does well and if you need to find a specific address or just a way back home, it will get you there. One final thing to add - Best Buy offers price matching, so be sure to check out your local competitor's price and then ask for a price match. I saved $30 off my GPS unit."

What's great about it: Text to speach feature lets you drive, get directions and never take your eyes off the road
What's not so great: Absolutely nothing
"Used the Magellan to guide us on 7600 mile trip to west coast and back. Since wife has trouble reading maps, this GPS unit saved our marriage! Easy to program destinations, can find you bathrooms in an emergency and motels at night when you are tired, it's dark outside and you are in a strange town etc. I don't leave the house without it ever again."

What's great about it: Easy to use, great sale price, great display
What's not so great: No complaints
"After much research, I was torn between a Garmin and a TomTom. However, when I saw the sale price on this - it was a no brainer. The text-to-speech and wide screen are great features. It is also incredibly easy to use. I tested it out a little, and it is a fast and responsive unit. I have never had any issues with picking up a signal or being routed in the wrong direction. It also automatically re-routes you if you get off track, so even though it is practically impossible, you will never get lost!"

What's great about it: saves time, works great, easy to use
What's not so great: none
"We purchased this because my husband started truck driving and i used to mapquest where he had to go. What a time saver. He is so thrilled no more u-turns! He says that it brings him right to the front of the address. He has encourted no problems and it is extremely accurate. He hasn't thrown out his map but he also hasn't used it since we purchased this unit. The screen in large and also being able to reduce the lighting helps tremendouly."

We loved this unit

What's great about it: Very easy to use
What's not so great: None
"We've considered a GPS for our car for some time. We looked at Tom-Tom's, Magellans, Garmins and Navigon. Magellan just came out with a new line of hand helds and they have had a bit of a rocky start. So, we were initially a little leary of this new addition to the Magellan Auto GPS line. But, one vendor had them as part of a working display and my wife and I got a chance to try the unit out in demo mode in the store. The unit was quick and flawless. Though the unit has 6 Million points of interest, not every gas station, store and Resturaunt is in there. We find the problems to be with the establishments that are 10 or more years old. We also found this problem with the other brands as well. We actually liked the Tom Tom better than the garmin as well. Garmin is mighty proud of their units and need to figure out that they need to bring down the price point if they are going to stay competitive. The Navigon and it's 1 million POI's is a little limited based on it's competition. We have a Magellan 210 Explorist that we use for Geocaching, and we love it. So, we were willing to give this unit a try and we love it! For the money, the Magellan 1412 is the way to go for a complete Navigation unit. We didn't want one to Play MP3's or have blue tooth or do traffic stuff. This unit is perfect for us and we look forward to using it a lot. We found that the unit was very quick to re-route us when we missed a turn. The Text to speech pronounciation is very good. The unit comes with a built in battery so you can do routing in the comfort of your Home or RV and then move it to the dash and 'Away you go'. The unit changes to a black screen automatically, when it gets dark out to make it more comfortable for night driving. We find the user interface to be very intuitive. We would highly recommend this unit to anyone considering a GPS for the vehicle. Happy camping. - Eric -"

What's great about it: widescreen; includes Canada and Alaska; easy to use; tons of POI's; address book where you can save favorites
What's not so great: minor difficulty getting signal at times
"As you can see by my pros and cons, I think this is a great unit. We bought it for a trip to Canada & it worked great. The exit points of interests were very helpful because the highway we were on didn't have a lot of restaurants so we were able to find a restaurant that we wouldn't have known was there. The widescreen is great, and this is a feature that usually costs more than the $250 that I paid for this unit. Touch screen is easy to use. Definitely read the electronic user manual when you get it so you get the most out of it. When we were in Canada, there were times that there were traffic jams on a city street it directed us to take, so we turned off that road. It recalculated our route quietly and seamlessly. It's a great help to know that you won't get lost, even if you decide to check out a different road. My only complaint is that it has a hard time finding the signal if you have the unit off, then drive to a different location before you turn it on. It's easy enough to fix this (just leave it on from the beginning if you are going to use it at your next destination). It always finds the signal, but it does take a couple of minutes. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone!"

What's not so great: No usb cable
"I just bought this unit after trying a friends TomTom and I am very satisfied with my purchase. I love the voice prompts, telling me which exit to take, and which way to turn. This unit was very easy to set up and use. In less than 5 minutes in the parking lot I was up and running with this unit. I would truly recommend this to any one."

What's great about it: The best buy customer service people were helpful
What's not so great: would not receive any satellites
"This was supposed to work out of the box. For 2 days I tried to get it to receive a satellite signal. The documentation was unhelpful, the magellan website was user unfriendly. When I called the magellan phone number supplied and made it through the voice prompts, I was put on hold and never was able to get a human on the phone. Gave up after approx 1 hour. Could not even tell if I was still connected as there is no music, not even a message saying you're still on hold. Took it back to Best Buy and traded it in for a Garmin Nuvi."
