What's great about it: Excellent array of features; true macro function, small and light
What's not so great: flash difficult to use for macro shots, few optional lens add-ons

"This camera is everything that it is touted to be, i.e., a low-end pro-camera right before the true SLR experience. It packs a wollop of features; the only negative side to this is taking the time to learn all the fetures and getting used to the functionality to get them! (Many features have more than one way to access them, presumably to accomodate the user while shooting, vs. viewing after shooting.) I bought mine, not only because of the sale price for such a multiple functional camera, but because I needed true macro ability...this is when you can get very close to the subject and then take a picture of it...VERY CLEARLY. With this camera, you don't need to get that close to get close-in shots...the camera does that for you. The only real drawback on this function is that the flash feature does not allow you to get too close to the item being photographed as it is not mounted high enough; if you get too close, you get a shadow that pretty much covers up half of the subject! In order to counteract this, stay further away from the subject, and then zoom in on it to fill your 3" viewing screen on the back of the camera...Voila! You get macro shots! This works even better when shot with portrait mode in low light (see the 2 illustrations offered), with flash enabled (a mode selection on the dial). On true SLR's, the flash end is designed to be much higher up so that the shadow effect doesn't affect such macro shots. However, there are now add on macro light flashes made by several companies....these attach to the front of the lens and deliver even, high quality light and take the place of the flash on this camera...the end result is truely professional looking photos. (I will be acquiring one soon!)

Aside from that mentioned above, the only other real drawback is the lack of available lens filters...most offered for this model are for the 72-74 mm range which is the size of the optional add-on telephoto lens. The one included on the camera is much smaller than that, but not much is documented about it in the available literature. This is, in my opinion, another indication that the camera is considered, even by Sony Corporation, to be a "pre-SLR" grade camera. I am now trying to acquire several lens filters, one of them a UV filter, that will fit the standard lens on the camera. This is a must for shooting outdoors where the "purple halo effect" that most photographers speak of, is most likely to occur. The camera is light, easy to manipulate the controls on, and very easy to switch back and forth between shoot and view modes. The retractable 3" viewing screen is wonderful and totally clear and high definition....it is a joy to work with! And the menu options are pretty impressive. This camera enables a multitude of editing features right in the camera, prior to downloading, printing, etc. I am presuming this is a feature to enable using the optional docking feature all the more streamlined. While I will not be availing myself of this feature since I primarily am interested in high quality macro shots for online purposes, I can see this feature being much touted by those wanting to use the camera for photographing family and friends!

The size of this camera is pretty small considering the wealth of features and options...it makes using and operating the camera a breeze, especially for those with smaller hands. It also makes the camera a bit more portable....I am able to use a smaller-than-camcorder camera bag to carry it around in as a result. It also has a standard connection for tripods on the bottom so using a table top or standard tripod is easy.

All in all, this camera is a breeze to learn to take high quality professional looking pictures with. I strongly recommend it for anyone wanting excellent indoor pictures, and outdoor pictures, once you've acquired the appropriate lens filter for outdoor shooting of landscapes and such. (This really is a necessary option for outdoor filming...ask any pro!)

Price to value ratio is high; I rate it an 8 out of 10.

Very good lense, I took a pic of spiderman from 150 ft, no prob w the lense. Low light area, no problem with the manual option. This cam is worth it!"

What's great about it: zoom and picture clarity
What's not so great: no camera raw output

"I am very impressed with this product. The ability to zoom 15x is worth the money. The macro (close-up) ability is great as well. I took a picture of the moon that looked like it was taken with a telescope attached. In my opinion, it's the best camera out there in this price range. This camera also has a smile detection mode, which means the camera will only take a picture when the person is smiling. With this feature you can set either a child or adult priority. The camera knows the difference!"

Sweet   05/19/2008
By Dad2one from Sheboygan, WI

What's great about it: The speed that you can take pictures at is unreal
What's not so great: Cant seem to find anything that I dont like. SWEET

"Im the guy that wants it all and I really dont want to spend to get it, and boy let me tell you I hit the mother load with this buy. Everything that I wanted and then some all rolled into one, and at a price that even I was happy to spend. We have a almost two year old son and as he gets bigger it keeps getting harder and harder to get good pictures of him.....not anymore now when I want the picture I get it and more keep your finger on the button and it will not stop taking pictures till ya let go...unreal and unbeatable for the money. Not only can we get all the pictures that we want when he is running around, we can sneek into his room and take pictures of him sleeping without turning on the lights. I started out with a Canon for about $180.00 and went back the next day very upset, then a new sales person showed me this one for $399 and I almost fell over but got it and I am sooooo glad I did. If your on the fence I hope this helps. I would buy this again tomorrow if I had to."

Happy Mother's Day to Me !!!   05/11/2008
By Fish77 from Evansville, IN

What's great about it: Great zoom, sharp image, rechargeable battery
What's not so great: None yet

"I had been looking for a new digital camera to replace a smaller, less powerful one we've had for about 4 years. My husband and son picked this one for me for Mother's Day and so far I just love it. It has loads of easy to use features that many of the more expensive SLR types have. One particular feature I like is that you can edit your photos right on the camera. It really saves time sitting in front of the computer. The image is very sharp and there is no lag in where you are pointing to what you see on the LCD. It has a great burst mode for capturing fast movements such as sports and kids on the move. The moveable LCD screen is also a plus for when you aren't very tall, like me, or can't see around something in front of you to get that one good shot. This camera also uses a rechargeable lithium battery instead of AA's. You can take many more images and video with it than burning through regular batteries. All in all this is a great camera for an enthusiastic mom, or even a casual hobbyist."

Great camera!   05/09/2008
By charlyboy from Dallas, tx

What's great about it: Great picture quality and features for you money!
What's not so great: Hard to access features controls on manual mode; Slow responsive

"This is a good camera for your money, I own a Nikon D80 and I'm getting almost the same quality with this camera with less effort.
I'm suggesting Sony add more features to this camera.
* Auto White balance on incandescent conditions doesn't work well all the times, Sony should add a sensibility parameter.
* Flash shoe it's very important to have it!
* Add more speed when reviewing pictures and processing images.
* Internal flash should pop-up higher so can clear adaptor ring. Also a shorter/smaller adaptor ring.
Faster battery charger!
* HD video on Movie mode?
* Why not 12 megapixels or more?
* Why no RAW mode?
"

Excellent Choice!   05/02/2008
By flipluva

What's great about it: Night Shot, 3" LCD, Able to use Telephoto/Wide Angle Lenses
What's not so great: Nothing

"I purchased a Canon SX100 IS late last year and was very satisfied with it until I came upon the Sony DSC-H50. What attracted me most about the Sony was the 15x optical zoom and the 3" LCD. The Carl-Zeiss lens was the topping on the cake. I absolutely love the Night Vision Shot feature where you can take pics in the dark. It also has a Smile Detection feature that focuses directly on the smile(s) of the subject(s), much like today's Face Detection feature. All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase and can't wait to use it when I go on vacation this August for my destination wedding!!"

Awesome Camera   05/01/2008
By Gymnazo14 from Winston Salem, NC

What's great about it: 3" Screen, 15x zoom, amazing photos, great video
What's not so great: A little bulky and heavy

"This camera has been on our wish list for a couple weeks until it came out this week, and it was worth the wait! We have used it almost nonstop the last 3 days including night shots. I took one photo of a room with no lights on at 10:30 at night, and my wife thought I had taken it in the middle of the afternoon.
Form, function, and power all come together in this camera. We had another Sony that is 5 years old and still kicking, so this is an upgrade for us in a major way. We did almost 2 months of research, and this is the best deal out there.

great purchase   04/28/2008
By a2ndsin from las vegas, nv

What's great about it: great shots even at night
What's not so great: not capable of interchangable lens

"Overall a great camera. I especially like the fact that I can take night shots without the flash. In some of my Granddaughters concerts we are not allowed to take flash pictures so it really comes in handy. thanks"
