Was originally very disappointed that they were out but thanks to our Best Buy sales associate, they ordered one from another location. We gave it as a Christmas gift to our son and daughter-in-law and they said it is working just fine.
What's great about it: Was a great price and they said it is working just fine
What's not so great: There was only one available.

It's a good external HD if your looking for one. I'll never buy a Seagate I'd rather spend the extra dollar on quality that will not lost my information. I've been through 2 of these models. I dropped one and it broke that's why this model is not getting 5 stars. I personally am looking in purchasing a 1.5tb or larger in the near future. Keep in mind that this unit requires A.C power to work it does not work off USB power.
What's great about it: Comes with everything, small size, good memory size
What's not so great: Very slow when it begins to fill.

I have to say that this is my first 1TB HDD and it works great so for. I bought it in 2008 on black out friday for $160.Its tranfers files slow with usb 2.0 but with firewire or esata its alot faster about half the speed that's for sure. Can not use all 1000GB cause about 30GB is used up already for the software to run it.I put movies, songs, video clips, pics, and ect. its a little slow after filling it up but works fine and need to by another one in a couple of weeks when the next black out friday hits that's for sure.
What's great about it: Works Fine and Easy to Use, Filled It Up In 9 Months!
What's not so great: Slow Tranfers of flies with usb 2.0, Only can use 970 GB!
I would recommend this to a friend!

I plugged the device into my linux workstation and it was immediately recognized as a drive. This is great.
What's great about it: Worked with my linux OS laptop right out of the box. (Ubuntu 9.10)
What's not so great: Lack of documentation on the box regarding linux compatability.

This product worked great right out of the box; plug and play. Plugged directly into my Apple's FireWire Port, within seconds OS X 10.5 & 10.6 both could recognize the drive. The drive was used to:
Contain 150 GB of music & 150 GB of movies.
The drives performance worked really, really well. Unfortunately the drive occasionally had issues initially loading the software to access the drive. With to much data in one single library the drive bogged down.
Though that was a pain, it still worked so why fix what isn't broken? Well... Thank god for my backup, this is the third one that has broken. Out of no where the Operating System warns me "OS X Can't Read this drive it may be failing soon please backup or format the drive."
I was like, well... The drive still appears to be working, so I do trouble-shooting with the software, then the OS. But I keep getting this issue. so I reformat the disk. I reformat the disk and then I hear nothing. The loud fan stopped. I look at the lights and etc. the drive failed. I took the drive apart, tried attaching it into a external enclosure I had lying around. Still nothing, the drive for the third one has failed me yet again!
If you expect the manufacture to help, forget about it. They give you the run around even though their product clearly failed and has a genuine issue.
What's great about it: The size, thespeed, performance, and ease of use
What's not so great: They die in less then a year.

I have been using this drive for nearly nine months and have had no large problems yet to speak of. I took it home, plugged it into my laptop, and in less than a minute it showed up in "My Computer." I now have about 500GB stored and it hasn't slowed or showed any hesitation.
The one single problem that I have had with this drive is that it is better to plug it in while the PC is either in "off" or "sleep" mode. When I plug it in while the PC is in "on" mode, it will sometimes freeze up the screen on the PC and cause me to restart it. As long as I stick with plugging the drive in beforehand, everything runs smoother than any other drive that I have owned.
For those who say that the drive is messed up for not storing files larger than 4GB, here is the answer. The reason it doesn't store files that large is because the drive is originally formatted in FAT32. To fix the problem, go to the properties of the drive and reformat the drive to NTFS, which allows files of all sizes to be stored.
I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for a great, reliable drive.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Needs to be plugged in before turning on the computer from off or sleep mode
I would recommend this to a friend!

This drive worked immediately with no trouble. I've got an older Pentium 4 machine and it connected instantly via USB. It was faster than I expected.
Does not come with an ESATA cable. I've read some ESATA connection issues can be solved with a firmware update from WD's very helpful web site.
Also, if your drive "disappears", go into Windows drive controls and assign the drive a specific letter. This may solve the issue. I have never had any trouble with that, but read the solution elsewhere in case it helps anyone out there.
The energy saving feature spins the drive down after 10 minutes of inactivity. It's great being green, but this feature cannot be changed. I believe the user should ALWAYS have control over a feature like this For those who archive their drives and don't need to access this drive constantly, this feature makes sense. However, I access this drive constantly and when it goes to sleep every ten minutes it is somewhat annoying waiting a few seconds for it to wake up again.
My main concern however is heat build up. Under heavy use I noticed the side of the case near the controller card got warm. At first I added a small CPU fan to blow air across the top of the case and it aided cooling.
I ran it for about a month before I took the case apart to modify it. (By the way, it is not meant to be taken apart--there is no easy way to do it and it voids the warranty anyway.)
With the case apart, I bored a hole in the side of it and hooked up a small CPU fan to suck hot air out of the case. (This violates the warranty, and is certainly not the task for just anyone to attempt). I did this because I had read reviews about heat related failures of the controller card. I found my unit getting a little warm after heavy usage so I thought adding a fan would help. I ran it for about an hour without the fan on, and it seemed fine. The case didn't really feel warm. But when I turned the fan back on, the fan was like a hair dryer, continuing to blow hot air out of the case for 10 minutes! For this reason I think the heat may compromise the longevity of this product under heavy use. It is nice and quiet the way it is, but I think WD may have been better off adding a tiny fan and skipping the energy saving feature -- or at least let the user have full control over it.
Over all, the unit has been solid, fast and reliable under four months of heavy, nearly constant use. I've always had good experience with WD drives and so far, this drive continues to carry on that tradition. I think anyone who desires lots of storage will like this drive - but make sure it has plenty of airflow around it.
What's great about it: Tons of storage, drive seems fast, esata, usb and firewire. WD web site is good
What's not so great: Energy saving feature not controllable, no fan - heat build up

I bought 2 WD home edition 1TB, and both crashed, they were working great connected with the usb port, but when I switched to the firewire port the pc recognized it, then it died.
This happens twice, I mean with 2 different drives, which makes me think that this is a general problem with this series
save yourselves a headhech and DO NOT BUY IT !!!!!!!
I had a WD 500GB drive (usb only) and it is still working after almost 2 years of use, this one died after I switched port, how ridiculous that is.
What's great about it: the space (1 TB)
What's not so great: it will eventually crash

What's not so great: Drive does not work. It has failed to transfer 4gb of data always states that there is an error. I just bought it.

I would normally think that my bad drive symptoms were a derivative of a bad drive in a batch of good ones, however, now owning three of these at different times I am convinced the problem is with Western Digital and not anything else that they have claimed including but not limited to old firewire drivers. The drivers were updated without any result.
It's the normal routine, I can never get the Esata to work, but I can get the firewire to recognize the drive. After about three weeks, the drive just blinks out and no matter what I do, I can't get my computer to recognize the drive.
This has happened exactly each time I gave WD another chance hoping this had been fixed. So I supposed I'm shamed twice!!!
I decided to just keep the drive since the USB works just fine, except on one of them where on occasion it does blink out and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get the computer to recognize it.
Priced as a USB drive, however, I probably would still make the purchase if I couldn't find a comparably priced drive with firewire and Esata. So I guess that gets three stars.
What's great about it: Just plug it in and you're ready to go. Sort of. You have to format for NTSC
What's not so great: Faulty firewire and Esata, average USB speed, Sometimes blinks out.

I just picked up this drive at the local Best Buy. I haven't been home 20 minutes and I'm already going back out the door to return to Best Buy. I bought the drive to support my "Time Machine" backup function on my new iMac specifically because this product supports Firewire. Little did I know it is only packaged with a USB 2.0 cable, a Firewire 400 cable and that's all. Unfortunately even though it has a port for firewire 800 (just as my iMac does) the drive is not packaged with the appropriate cable. Now I have an extra USB and Firewire cable and a trip back to the store to get the cable I need.
Thanks Western Digital, your the Best!

I recently bought this external hard drive about two months ago today. The hard drive was very easy to install. I just had to plug one USB FireWire into an open slot in my computer. You can't make the installation much easier than that.
I also thought the design was really slick. The black case with the blue LCD lights makes the small drive very appealing to the eye. Also to go along with the easy installation and the looks of the hard drive it works great. I use the hard drive for backing up music, movies, and virtually everything else on my computer, and I have not had a problem with it yet.
Now the price on the other hand is a little up there. For $161.99 I think you are paying for the name more so then the product itself. Well that is the case with pretty much any name brand item, but you get what you pay for, and I have not had any problems with this hard drive yet.
You never know though only time will tell if it was worth the money or not. I would however recommend this drive to anyone who asks about purchasing an external hard drive.
(PJV)
What's great about it: How easy it is to install and the cool design.
What's not so great: The Price could be a little bit cheaper.

I own three "My Book" series external hard drives and they have all failed. I have 4 other WD drives that have failed as well. WD makes the most unreliable drives I have ever used.
I have had to use Data Recovery on every WD drive I have owned.
What's great about it: It is external and when the drive crashes you have a housing for a new drive
What's not so great: These hard drives are a piece of junk

Purchased the first one 3 months ago in an effort to archive and then back-up the movies and music in my home. Having never used firewire before we decided to go with these so that we could daisy chain new sets. Currently have 2 and going to get 2 more working in a home network with nearly a dozen computers in a mix of Vista, XP, 7(beta) and Mac OS all working in perfect HARMONY no compatibility issues what so ever! We have accessed multiple movies and music at the same time and have yet to have a problem. We will have these for some time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's great about it: Great Speed.Great Looks.Compatibility
What's not so great: Wish it came in a larger size with firewire.

I bought this Black Friday as an extra storage for my mega video files to run into my Phillips usb DivX player. All my previous WD drives came setup as FAT32's ready to load up files off the computer and play in the Phillips........this one is not recognized by the Phillips player even though it also is the FAT32 file system formated out of the factory. It seems to transfer files very quickly for a massive storage solution so it will be used for that instead.
I would think this would get hot without a built in fan but it doesn't, my other WD externals never did either.
I'm using the USB, but I suppose I could hook it up internally with the E-SATA port to see if that makes it even faster.
Like most people I have no idea what a FireWire is any more than I know what a BlueTooth is - these seem like geek buzzwords to me so I probably won't be using those features ( I believe the Tooth thing is that ear gadget the bald guys wear so they can look important while they talk to themselves at the store)
To sum it up this seems like a nice unit, but there are many other WD's like it without the fancy connections that work great and go for less cash so make sure you actually need these features and not just an old fashioned, old school USB connection device which actually work just fine.
I'd buy the cheaper one next time
What's great about it: speed, looks, easy to get started
What's not so great: some compatability flaws

I purchased one of these drives b/c i needed a lot more space than i had. I already have a couple of 1TB usb hard drives, so i figured i would take a firewire and esata connection for a test drive. All i have to say is that this thing is nuts! The first thing i did with it was to copy a bunch of windows games to it as ISO's. I took those and installed them on a few of my computers with a virtual drive and the firewire connection. COD4 always took me about a half an hour to do a new install, with this setup it took me five minutes to copy to the drive then literally 90 seconds to install!!! the speed is amazing!
If you just need a drive for general storage of data files or rarely accessed files then a USB drive is fine for you, but if you want a file and you want it now, or you are playing a game and need a good transfer speed, then this is the drive for you.
What's great about it: Huge size, insane speed!
What's not so great: gets hot
I would recommend this to a friend!

I also bought this on Black Friday and have only had it up and running for four days.
I gave the 4's because I had to do reformatting and got all the temporary software off it. So it wasn't a just out of the box experience for me. It could have been, but I bet the software included with it would have just kept getting in the way and the original formatting would have caused me problems.
3 on performance: Does anyone else think this drive is loud? I was expecting it to be pretty quiet, but it's not. I hear it "spinning" and sometimes a very faint clicking. It is kind of like my internal hard drive I guess.
I also wanted to respond to other posters. I personally appreciate the quick start sheet the drive comes with because it makes less of an environmental impact. The full manual IS on the Hard Drive itself as a PDF (in multiple languages) and the manual is connected to the WD website for questions and more info-- the manual has embedded links.
When I first got this drive, I backed up everything that was on it to a DVD, then I reformatted the drive according to directions that I found in earlier reviews and in the manual and the online website for Windows XP users (so that it is now NTFS or something like that). I had never down this before, and I am no techie, but the manual and website walked me through it and I even learned about partition sizes and I created two partitions on this drive-- 1 for backing up and 1 as an additional desktop space. Fabulous! Just what I needed.
I have the drive connected via USB and it works kind of like a really big flash drive for me. It's as fast as everything else on my computer, which is good, so I can't complain.
So far, so good. (By the way, I never trust these things and so I have backups of my backups on another drive and on DVD.)
What's great about it: Capacity, size
What's not so great: makes more noise than I thought
I would recommend this to a friend!

I also bought this hard drive on Black Friday. I haven't used it long enough to actually write about its pros/cons, but I just wanted to respond to the other 2 who have posted before me. I thought the programs were offered only for trial periods also, and I agree that the included documentation was a joke. But I went onto the website for western digital and was able to find the actual pdf manual. I also found out that the WD Anywhere Backup wasn't just a trial program.. you have to insert the "key" (which was at the bottom right hand corner of that instruction sheet we got with the 4 steps). Once you insert that code, (I believe) the program is permanently installed onto your computer and you can use it forever. Hope that helps!
What's great about it: easy to set up
What's not so great: haven't used it long enough to know

I purchased this HD on Black Friday because of the great savings on the price.
At home, I spent several hours transferring all of my photos, mp3's, etc. After I tried to access some of my files, I found that the HD had either completely wiped all of my files or they had been overwritten. Half of the time, the HD isn't even recognized by my computer, and the other half, it is so slow that my computer freezes, or I am forced to perform a disk check.
The included software is only for trial periods, which isn't stated anywhere on the packaging. Additionally, there is not much in the way of troubleshooting or help dialogs.
I was sorely disappointed in this product, and would not recommend it to anyone. Saving money is not worth losing important data.
What's great about it: Nothing.
What's not so great: Speed, ease of use, included software.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The best thing about this drive is that I was able to buy it on sale at a great price - and - the drive itself seems to be functional.
HOWEVER:
1. THE DRIVE IS EXTREMELY SLOW. The RPM speed is not listed anywhere on the box and it's no wonder. It is only 5,400 RPM. If I had known that in advance, I would had purchased a different drive that had at least 7,200 RPM.
2. POOR DOCUMENTATION. You get one printed page that shows a diagram of how to install the drive. No User manual whatsoever. Thus, you have no detailed information about the hardware, included software, etc.
3. ALMOST ALL OF THE INCLUDED SOFTWARE ARE FREE "TRIAL" PROGRAMS. - including the WD Anywhere backup program. Thus, if you want to use a free backup program - you might want to consider using the one that comes with your computers operating system.
What's great about it: The drive appears to be functional.
What's not so great: It is extremely slow, poor documentation, etc.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
