What's great about it: looks good
What's not so great: many defects and stop working after 12 months.

"The worst purchase I have ever made ona laptop, LOST CONFEDENCE ON HP
Initially, in the second month, has a problem with the display, all the sudden the screen lost the proper display picture and become like mosaic display or Black with few yellow thick lines.
5 to 6 months later the DVD player start opening by it self suddenly without any action from me!
imagine the weeks of work wasted to send it back for reparation...
Just after the 12 month warranty ended, the computer suddenly stop working one morning, GeegSquad recommend changing the mother board, it was not worth it because the reparation cost was the same as the price of a new laptop.
I took real care of it during the short period I have it before it fails to function, it was never subject to shock or strong vibration.
I can't recommend HP laptop to any one, you can t believe the time I wasted to recover my data and the interruption to my daily work.
It is still shiny from the outside but useless as a laptop

What's great about it: modern look
What's not so great: hot, power hungry

"I came to buy this HP lap top over 750-900 price range from sony, toshiba, gateway.
This loptop looks great, the wireless internet senitivity is very good in comparison to my old 4 years old thinkpad.
picture looks very good, but watching movie in a angle is not too great.
With you tube watching and screen bright setting about 85%, you get over 1 hr battery, which is a weak point.

I also got problem with the volume side bar, here how to turn off:
1. Click the Vista start icon, bottom left.
2. Type RUN in the Start Search box, ENTER.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the OPEN: area, Click OK.
4. Click on Continue if asked.
5. Select the StartUp Tab in the System Configuration menu.
6. Remove the Checkmark from the HP Quicktouch On Screen Display item.
7. Click on OK and Restart if required.

What's great about it: Not bulky like the Compaq and toshiba, and not as hot as the Gateways
What's not so great: The Volume Control Quick Launch is giving me constant issues.

"I was looking at a Gateway first for $549 that had great specs but as research went on I found out that the wireless card is garbage and that it runs very hot for a laptop and would just not be comfortable. Then Toshiba and Compaq are just big and bulky so I went with the Dv5. This is an outstanding laptop when it comes to performance and bang for the buck. Now for the issue. The volume control is a touch sensitive so you have to swipe your fingers across to to turn it up and down. When you change the volume a window pops up on the screen which takes up over half the screen. Randomly without touching the volume buttons it will pop up and turn all the way up over and over again to the point of no return. You can't do anything because there is no X to click so you just have to wait 10 min before it calms down and stops clicking. You say just disable it? Well, it isn't just right click and exit.
Also, I had Fireworks and Photoshop which both I can't use anymore because Vista home premium and this laptop are not compatible with it. I have tried the install a printer, run xp sp2 compatability ect... It all doesn't work.
AND ONE MORE THING... XP home premium 32bit which comes on this laptop only supports up to 3.12gigs of ram so don't waste your money on 4 gigs because the computer won't utilize it.
Other than that it's great :).

Great Notebook   08/21/2008
By Tain from Dallas, TX

What's great about it: Affordable, user friendly, size, and memory.
What's not so great: Generates alot of heat, battery life, and exterior design.

"As a student on a budget, this computer was a great investment for me. I wanted a machine under 15", affordable, with 3g's or more, decent graphics card, and 250g or more under $700. I got more than I needed with this machine. I played/tested this notebook in original form and was satisfied with its performance and response. The DVD/CD writer works great, machine mem is expandable to 4g's for future upgrades, sound was loud and crisp, touch sensitive buttons are easy to use, small and light enough for me to carry anywhere, and the 250g's of space is a plus! I recently wiped the whole machine clean and installed Vista Ultimate. I deleted all of the junk that was included when i bought it, so now its upgraded with stuff I don't need. I plan on having this for years to come and so far I am very pleased with it.
The AMD dualcore works like a charm, but can strain your battery and limit it to about 1 1/2 hours or less. The heat it generates is another issue I have with this notebook. I went out and bought a chill mat to help expel the heat, so my lap wont overheat with it. I am also not to fond of the top wave designs, but overall I spent $680 for it and with the minor setback, it's still a steal for me. I would recommend this notebook to anyone.

Good purchase for the price   07/25/2008
By Khokha

What's great about it: small, portable, cool-looking
What's not so great: over-heats, vista, sound on quickplay

"I have purchased a toshiba before this one. Huge mistake! HP is the best and Best Buy are the best.
This computer is great and cute.
It over heats sometimes and vista has some issues but it's the same for vista on all other brands. Sound not loud enough when playing a DVD, not sure why though!
I would recommend this computer for any college students who has kids :) a smaller computer would be easy to break.

Great Purchase for me   07/21/2008
By TchrMom1

What's great about it: Mobility, speed, ease of use
What's not so great: Screen size, no mouse (wireless capability, though)

"Our desktop dies, and I needed a computer. As a teacher working toward a Master's in school administration, this was perfect for me. There is plenty of space for what I need, and I have not had any problems with Vista (knock on wood)."

good purchase for me.   07/21/2008
By skinnycow from Stoughton, WI

What's great about it: the size of the laptop, convience of the laptop verses desktop.
What's not so great: Vista was new to me and took some learning to use it. Vista would not work with the Quicken program

"The laptop itself was a good purchase for me. Although my Quicken program will not print with the Vista. I worked with it for a few weeks and decided that the laptop was not the problem, it was Quicken. My kids (and myself) love the convience of taking the laptop anywhere in the house to use it. I am really glad i made this purchase."

Seems Flawless So Far   07/14/2008
By LovewithTech

"I picked this up at Best Buy for $799 and the performance has been perfect. Speed seems exceptional. Wireless connectivity is very sensitive. Weight is right. It does give off a lot of heat, so beware.

One thing I don't like are the ergonomics of the touchpad. It's a bit scrunched, but this is a 14-inch screen computer, so I guess it goes with the territory. I purchased a wireless mouse and use that mostly anyway.

I haven't begun to tap this unit's full potential yet, but it seems to be positioned to be useful for a long time to come.

Great buy   07/08/2008
By Charlieboy from Iowa

What's great about it: Wonderful performance, petite and beautiful.
What's not so great: Hot on lap

"I have been having a good time enjoying this laptop since i bought it. It is the best HP i have ever used. Am a management consultant and all my life, i make presentations. I used to criticize HP for clustering its Laptop's ports around same area on its system making it difficult to connect the flash and the projector at the same time. But not with this one. The ports are now well spaced out.
At 14 inches, its so light and portable. The webcam is sharp and the dotted blue lights on it are so beautiful to behold especially under a dim light. I love the design of the keyboard. I just want HP to put bluetooth on future productions, as standard, at minimal cost. I recommend this laptop to any one who wants a good one at a reasonable price.

Awesome laptop, even when I wanted a Mac   07/07/2008
By Anonymous from Detroit, MI

What's great about it: lightweight, fast, easy to use,
What's not so great: top of the cover shows fingerprints

"So, I really wanted to buy a Mac, but with one with comparable memory and speed was double the price. I have had this for 3 days now and am very happy. I am known to return items until I find the perfect one, within hours of buying them, so to have kept it this long and not wanted to return it, I must love it. I don't use it for professional reasons, just personal. So far, I haven't found something, besides the finish on the top of the cover showing every fingerprint known to man, that I hate. But the fingerprint issue is not something I would return over. There is a little cloth included to wipe them off.
Happy usage!!!

Not bad for a 3rd Laptop   06/14/2008
By Poetzkongo from Dorchester, MA

What's great about it: Webcam and the light wight portability
What's not so great: A little hot on the bottom

"I purchased the HP Pavillion dv2815nr yesterday afternoon after work and it was refreshing to see a laptop with a webcam that wasn't over $800. I enjoy the built in webcam and the entertainment features as well. I consider myself an avid game player so this laptop helps with the down time that I have after work. I recommend this laptop to anyone who is a student or to anyone who enjoys thier entertainment. I just wish that the bottom of the HP wasn't so warm. Other than that, this laptop is a very good buy."

Great Purchase   06/11/2008
By rebafan from Idaho

What's great about it: price, webcam, image quality, battery life, touch controls for media, remote
What's not so great: touchpad not overly sensitive, keyboard is a bit cheap feeling, glare from screen

"This is the first new laptop I've had in a long time, and actually it is my first laptop that is actually mine. I was using my moms acer travelmate she got through the school that didn't even have a full gb of ram. It started being a real hassle. Then as a graduation present, my dad decided that it was time to buy me a computer. I spent a lot of time looking online and reading reviews. I knew I needed to stay on the cheap side, but I also wanted to get something that would solve my problems with not enough ram or hard drive to use most of the new software. After a lot of comparing, I really liked the price and stats on this computer, it seemed like a good purchase. I just got it today, and I haven't put it down since. I really like the pretty cover, although I've been told it is a fingerprint magnet. It is however very nice. I love the touch controls that let me adjust volume, mute, stop and play my music very easily. I like the remote, I was having fun looking through the media from my bed. I watched a movie on it. The volumn was nice, but i preferred the included headphones. I like that it has two plug ins for your headphones, so you could watch a movie with someone and still not disturb those around you. I found the games cool, haven't checked out hp games yet. I played around with the web cam, and my little sister had a blast with me taking pictures of her with the weird distortions. That alone was a huge bonus. Seems good image quality. The only thing I'd say is that the movement of my mouth in real life and on the screen seem a little off. My only big complaint is the touch pad. Maybe it just takes some getting used to when coming from an older model, but I sometimes have to tap two three times to get it to feel it. Typing the key board is a bit noisy/cheap. But that may be normal now. I don't like how much of a space there is between keys, that may just be me but I've actually kind of gotten my finger caught on it, can't explain it just feels weird. I'm used to smaller keys though. I wish the screen was bigger, but I'm okay with it. It's not too much lighter than my old one, but certainly portable. Speed seems okay, installation of sims 2 and sims 2 pets was about the same as old laptop, but playing the game, going from one scene to another and menu to menu was much faster. One issue I'm having that I don't really understand is the internet. We have a wireless connection in our house, just a few rooms away, but my connection isn't always great. I can go from page to page and get on the internet with ease, but for some reason every time I try to close a page it gives me this thing that says that the internet connection stopped working or something like that, and it will close, and sometimes reopen. So I can close a smaller subscreen and it will all close and i'll have to start all over, but it doesn't show anything wrong with the connection. Even in the room with the actually wireless internet it happens, so I don't think it has anything to do with strength of connection, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with internet computer. As far as battery life goes, I'm not sure what is considered a long battery life, but I watched a whole movie and fiddled around before I even realized that I hadn't plugged myself back in...and I still had 37%. Then again, my old computer had to be plugged in all the time because not only was the life an hour or less, but it would go really dim when you unplugged it which made it really hard to see the screen. This computer dims a tiny bit, but you barely notice it. I have it on the setting it came on and wasn't doing anything terribly intense though so maybe that makes a difference. The only other complaint I have is that it does kind of have a glare, like when I'm watching my movie I can also see my reflection. They didn't have these glossy finishes and hd screens when I got my last computer though, so this may be the norm. Picture is great...but once again they didn't have that when we bought our last computer. Overall I think I'm going to like it. If I can get the issue with the internet resolved I'll love it. That said, I would recommend it to a friend because if you don't get too picky about the little things this is an incredible buy on sale. 679 for 3gb of ram....and a build in web cam...I don't think you can beat that."

Great Notebook   06/05/2008
By malosothegreat from Las Vegas

What's great about it: Loaded cheap and works great!
What's not so great: smaller screen and short life battery

"For the price 749 (on sale) this is a great notebook. I have 2 desktop HP's and this notebook didn't feel like I was giving anything up to be mobile. It has everything you need to start. I bought a USB mouse to add to it. I wanted to get everything I could ever want to use with it all at once but after 2 weeks the mouse was enough.
I use this for work and to play games when I have to wait away from home. The web is very fast with my highspeed connection even wireless and I have no lag (caused by the system). I am very picky when it comes to notebooks and I found this one to be rewarding.
Only con is the screen is a little smaller (but I like the less weight) and the battery only lasts about 1 to 2 hours but I have it running full blast. There is a energy saver option that I haven't tried that is suppose to extend the life.
"
