What's great about it: Easy to use, fast load time, GREAT picture!
What's not so great: The LCD is not bright enough.

"Honestly, as I sit here with my partner and discuss what it is that we do and don't like about this Blu-ray player. We find ourselves asking each other what we don't like and can't come up with a thing other than the LCD on the player not being brighter. We recently purchased a Philips 42' LCD HDTV. The 1080p is BEAUTIFUL with the Blu-ray. I tried to justify the cost in my head by convincing myself that the picture quality is SO much better than traditional DVD. After buying the Insignia, I no longer needed to be convinced! This is definitely a GREAT Blu-ray player for the first timer."

What's great about it: NOT A THING
What's not so great: Horrible Playback

"The only good thing I can say about this unit was it was easy to set up. First we tried to play a Blueray movie (HANCOCK) on this unit. All the way through it the player would stop and the screen would say no signal, it would start again for a few minutes than no picture again all the way through the movie. If that was not bad enough than when it was playing the AUDIO would cutout for a few seconds and resume again through the entire movie. We then tried to play a regular dvd and it was worse. We have a brand new Samsung - 46" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV and it deserves a much better player than this one. We purchased the blueray on 11/25/2008 and returned it on 11/27/2008!!!!! ENOUGH SAID."

"To give you a short soliloquoy of why I bought this product.................

Basically, it was for the money it was saving me, after hearing so many positive reviews for its performance.

I was looking to upgrade the appearance of my "regular" dvd collection, while I start to build my blue ray collection.

It's not that simple.

I have had a regular, INEXPENSIVE Magnavox dvd player for about three years, that has given exceptional performance.

But this Insignia brand is NOT up to snuff.

If watching a movie and NOT seeing the director's vision ( as in the WHOLE screen) doesn't bother you, then this product is for YOU.

And the truth of the matter is, I had my Magnavox dvd player hooked up with coaxial cables for years.

I STILL haven't seen the difference that the HDMI cable makes towards the picture.

But, that's just MY opinion."

What's great about it: Low Price and decent picture, BUT...
What's not so great: No firmware updates from Insignia...

"For the money, its a decent player, it will do the basics. BUT, there is no firmware avaiilble as of Black Friday 2008. It may not play all the sofware and features of newer upcoming Blue Ray titles. Don't let the good price fool you, spend 30 to 50 more and get one with an ethernet port that can easily do firmware updates. I went to Insignia's webpage and contacted them by phone, and the two customer reps I spoke with had no clue what I was talking about. I returned two players (I bought one for my parents for Xmas) and got two Sony ones."

What's great about it: Affordable compared to competitors, gives you basic BR-playback
What's not so great: No ethernet port, slow loading, too remote control-dependent

"Not bad if you aren't expecting a lot from it aside from basic playback. No Ethernet means no firmware updates, and no BD-Live functionality. On the other hand it plays back Blu Ray really well, with minor software annoyances. Worth it if you can get it for a good deal."

What's great about it: Price, easy to use, A/V Quality
What's not so great: Display brightness, only Profile 1.1

"Don't be fooled by people telling you that this Insignia blu-ray player will not work for you, because IIT WILL. This along with the Magnavox and others are the so called 'Funai Clones', manufactured by Funai, but that doesn't diminish the quality of play at all.

This is a hassle-free blu-ray player. All the movies I've played so far have loaded without a problem. The audio and video also played flawlessly (remember to read the instructions to set up your player properly, like you would with any other). Also, this player features an optical audio out, that is, if you don't have a home theatre system with HDMI, you can use it to get better audio than regular audio connections.

On the downside, the display is dimmed low; and it is only Profile 1.1, which means that it will play true Picture-in-Picture, but will not connect only for the so called 'BD-Live'.

Again, this is a cheap and reliable player that won't let you hanging or waiting for updates or for discs to load and play properly."

What's great about it: Easy set up, great price,

"Bought htis bluray player when I bought the 47" Insignia LCD HDMI 1080P television a few weeks ago. Works great thus far, no complaints whatsoever. Have viewed both bluray and regular Dvds. At this point would highly recommend ( plus I got $80 off when I ordered it online with the television- even more of a reason to recommend)."

What's great about it: Vivid colours
What's not so great: HUGE Box, had a hard time fitting in my car

"I took this beauty home and have found the ability to time warp. This player allows me to stand next to Leonidas in the battle of Thermopolae and attempt to take down the Persian attack. I then feel as if I know what women want while standing next to Mel Gibson, but I am the one who gets Helen Hunt. Then I hit what I would like to call the moment of truth....... I put in Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D on Blu ray and almost Star Trekked myself (shatner). I cannot believe that all that value came from a unit that cost me so little. I will reccomend this player to anyone I come in contact with. My boyfriend Eric is buying this player for everyone on his Chanukkah list. Thanks Insignia for the BPE (best playa evah)."

What's great about it: Picture quality is great even with plain DVD
What's not so great: Doesn't play ANY DVD+-R even though they say it does.

"The player was really good for the price. No problems with it playing store bought or rented DVD's and Blu-Ray.

The only complaint I had was that it would not play any home movies I created for our family as DVD's on either DVD-r or DVD+r which really annoyed me. It would detect them as a DVD but then would not play them, just would stick on STOP. Our Phillips DVD player played them just fine.

Not sure if I recommend the player to anyone -- depends on what type of DVD's they have. Anyone using DVD+-R's would be out of luck I think."

What's great about it: Plays all the latest BD dvd's
What's not so great: I dont like the fact that I have to go into setup to change from BD to sd card, but not really a con b/c it functions

"This is my first BD player b/c my samsung will not play blu ray anymore until a firmware update comes out. It plays everything beautifully and load time is not really an issue, standard dvd start right up with hardly no lag, BD-dvd's take about 10-20 sec which is not really bad considering if your watching a movie, it will give you time to go get something to drink or popcorn, LOL. Everyone always does something like that. I actually like this over my samsung, samsung has really let me down and the fact that you dont need firmware updates every month is a plus. Sound quality is excellent and picture quality is excellent as well as having the option to play something at 1080p (24p) is definitely a plus. I havent seen that yet on a blu ray. Hope this helps people out."

What's great about it: Very easy set up via HDMI cable.
What's not so great: No clock on front display.

"I have been very please with this player so far. I have played several different blu-ray discs as well as standard dvds. It has not given me any trouble. I'm not sure why the complaint on load times. It takes about 25 seconds from when you hit power to start loading a disc, or recognize there is no disc in the tray. Hit open tray and it opens right away (not 1 min later like another reviewer said). Loading a disc takes between 30 sec and 1 min depending on the content on the disc. If you can't wait 1 or 2 minutes for your disc to load you have serious waiting issues. Playback is outstanding. Indiana Jones looks incredible in high def. I use this on a 37in Vizio 720p TV. I run it using the 1080i settings and everything looks amazing. So if you wonder whether your 720p or 1080i HDTV will do blu-ray disc justice, don't worry it will. 1080p is only necessary on really large TVs. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get in the blu-ray game and not break your bank in the process. Only drawback my wife pointed out was that there is no clock on the display. Great player!"

What's great about it: Has played all of my new CD, DVD, Blu-Ray discs and burned CD, DVDs
What's not so great: It is PAINFULLY slow

"This player is a great example of the short-term satisfaction of low price quickly giving way to the long-term misery of poor performance.
I got this player for $100 off (final price of $250) when buying my 46" LCD a few months ago. The upsampling of standard DVDs is good, Blu-Ray discs look great, setup is easy and flexible and it plays all of my new and burned discs just fine.
But it is so painfully slow that I am considering simply purchasing one of the new Toshiba upsampling DVD players and selling this.
It takes between 15 and 20 seconds just for the tray to open compared to about 3 seconds for my $79 Sony DVD player. It takes about 3 minutes once the disc is inserted to play Blu-Ray titles like Ratatouille, and up to 1 minute for DVDs. While this may not be a total show-stopper, it is not what I'd call "ready for prime time". It didn't seem like a big deal at first but it has quickly become a thorn in my side that won't go away.
If you HAVE to have a cheap BR player, I wouldn't buy this player for any more than the current sale price of $199 because of the very slow performance. As a matter of fact, if I had it to do over, I wouldn't have bought this at all - I would wait until newer and better machines hit the sub-$200 mark in early '09 and average Blu-Ray titles fall to half their current prices."

What's great about it: Awesome picture and sound quality.Easy to set up and use.
What's not so great: The expensive HDMI cable that isn't included.

"This product is well worth the money if you are on a tight budget and you just want a basic Blu Ray player without the hefty price and bells and whistles the more expensive ones claim to showcase. The picture and sound quality is awesome as this is my first Blu Ray player.I was a little unsure at first buying a cheaper, off brand player but so far it has exceeded my expectations.I haven't been able to take full advantage of true 1080p on my 65" T.V. ,but the moment I started it I was blown away. I read some of the reviews stating that it wasn't that great but I found out you have to get a good quality HDMI cable because the cheaper ones just don't work as well.I love it and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a Blu Ray player."

What's great about it: SD card reader, easy set up, decent picture, great upscaler to regular dvds.
What's not so great: Noticed some lines on the tv via Blu ray disc.

"I just purchased this so don't have too much to say about it just yet. I will however, let you know that the picture and audio quality is good. I did notice some scratchy lines on my hdtv screen when I played 2 different blu ray movies. I put in some standard movies and they looked incredible!
My final favorite feature is the SD card reader.
Hope you enjoy it!"
