What's great about it: Runs every game I've tried; very nice cosmetics What's not so great: Gets hot; not 1080p
"My desktop crashed, and it wasn't the gaming powerhouse it was when i first bought it. So instead of getting it fixed, i decided to buy this laptop. That was about eight months ago. I have had absolutely no issues during the life of this computer. It runs every game i have on highest settings (Oblivion, Mass Effect, The Witcher...). I'm not sure exactly what the purpose of 64 bit is (i can't really use the 64 bit internet because the common flash players on most websites don't support it) but i hear its pretty sweet. This is definitely not something i would like to have on my lap due to the heat produced. I have it connected to my 42 inch LCD at all times with an HDMI cable which i paid eighteen dollars for. I love it! Only thing is the resolution is not HD (not as high as my LG anyway) so games are not quite as crisp as on the laptop screen, but still nice and definitely worth playing on the 42. I definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a gaming laptop. Even if you don't need a laptop (like me) this is much more convenient than a desktop."

What's great about it: Great Specs for Memory, Graphics, HD space What's not so great: Processor is a bit weak - but EASILY upgradeable, Monitor Resolution
"This is a great gaming machine that has many components of a $2K plus laptop. The Graphics card and amount of RAM are top notch. The two weaknesses I had issue with were the screen resolution 1440x900 and the T5550 Processor. I recently purchased a T9300 (2.5 ghz) processor and dropped it in without issue. This thing is blazing fast now. The T9300 runs cooler with less power and has 6MB of Cache. Overall, as it is sold (no upgrades), this machine will run most every game adequately. Some of the system hog games (Crysis) can't be run on the highest settings, but are definitely playable on the standard system. Gateway includes both the 32 bit and 64 bit Vista Home premium operating discs. In order to use all 4GB of RAM you need to run the 64 Bit as factory installed."

What's great about it: Nice display, fast, Good hard drive, looks great. Plays games quite well What's not so great: Pretty heavy, Gets really warm, Mic's not the best quality
"Over all this is a great laptop. I'm actually using it right now to write this review. It's quick. Runs multiple applications without a hiccup. Vista 64-bit's great. I bought this computer at my local Best Buy. It was a display so I got 10% off. I still have to reinstall windows on it to get rid of the security program they install on the display computers. And reinstalling the OS is about the only way to completely get rid of it. Other than that this computer has been really great. I play some games online, mainly Halo for the PC, and this machine runs it great. No problems whatsoever. I work in a lot of graphic based programs and usually run 4 different programs at a time. and this hasn't slowed down a bit. This computer's a monster. Not only is it powerful but it's heavy. Almost as heavy as the Toshiba gaming laptop, the one that looks like a George Foreman grill.. I had to download the touch pad drivers from the Gateway website, the only reason I had to do that is because it was a display. Personally I hate touch pads with a passion, but this one works really well. The click buttons are nice and large. Though you might want to disable "Tap to click" in the touch pad properties. The touch pad is directly under the space bar, so with Tap to click turned on you'll probably end up clicking all over the place. Other than those minor issues I love this computer. If you get a chance go play with one of these at your Best Buy and get a feel for it. The keyboard took me a while to get used to because the keys are so sensitive. I had to learn not to hit the keys so hard cause I'd end up having two of a letter in a word. The battery gets really warm and can get slightly uncomfortable if you have it on your lap. I have a desk and a TV tray that I use to keep it on while I'm working but when I pick it up it's pretty hot underneath. The display's really good. You might notice things looking a little lighter or washed out if you have the brightness on the highest settings. I'll give you an example, On youtube when the poster of the video replies to a comment their user name is in a light yellow bar, on this display you can just barely see that shade of yellow. Final opinion on this laptop, go ahead and get it if you can. I've had it for about 5 days and haven't put it down since. I recommend this computer to anyone that wants a workhorse or a stand up gaming laptop, or just a great laptop in general."

What's great about it: Good performance, design, feature set What's not so great: LCD panel quality
"This laptop is not bad for typing and Internet surfing. CPU performance is OK, 4GB memory, 802.11n WLAN, HDMI, eSATA, nice design. The only problem is the LCD panel. When you have bright picture as background - it is ok, but when you set any dark picture as background - you'll see the difference. This panel is bleeding from the bottom and when you look from any side a little bit - the colors become negative. It is hard to find the point from which the picture will have the same quality in all areas. In the low light environment the camera is terrible, but in well lighted room it is fine. On the P-7811FX model the screen is much-much better! About LCD panel of this model you can read here (you'll find also screen shots there): http://powerkb.blogspot.com/2008/09/about-lcd-panels.html"

What's great about it: Screen, performance, overall look What's not so great: it can get extremely hot
"I got this thing, brought it home and have been video gaming ever since. You can play pretty much anything on here. it has a great internet pickup, i can get signal from across the street. With the SD slot you can put a 4gb card in and boost the performance even more. i highly suggest getting the best buy perfomance plan for the extra 350 after a few weeks i noticed on the left side of the monitor it seems as the screen has pressure on it making odd formalities on the monitor without the plan you have to mail the laptop into gateway which is a pain. I love this thing i take it everywhere, everyone is impressed by it its huge but thats what you get when you have a full keyboard gaming laptop. Theres many outputs one of the coolest things i thought was the volume adjustment is motion sensing you wave your finger over the volume to go up and down. The monitor is very bright you can adjust it with the touch of a button. i usually leave it on overnight playing music to see how hot it gets ive had it shut off 2 times so far in the middle of gaming after many hours of play. For the price this is one of the funnest things i have ever owned you can play games on highest resolutions except when your only on battery and no direct power source, the fps go down slightly which is understandable. I would higly recommend this thing to anyone the battery sticks out a little bit but it makes it look like a beastly fast carbon fiber display case video gaming extreme machine."

What's great about it: Price, a lot of futures!!! What's not so great: Overall quality (cheap materials), bad speakers, fans noise, design and durability are below HP laptops.
"I never liked design and overall quality of this laptop. Only reason I bought it because of price and futures it has. Biggest problems are: 1. Bad speakers (same on P-6860FX and P-7811FX), no subwoofer. I hate bad sound (a lot of distortion)!!! It doesn't cost much to add good sound to it. Even Altec Lansing speakers on cheapest HP/Compaq laptops are so much better (no distortion at all)!!! 2. Windows Vista 64-bit doesn't support my laser mulifunction printer Canon (can't use it) and some software I used before. 3. Power adapter is large and heavy as a laptop itself. The laptop is noisy especially when you play games. 4. Webcam and mic are not good also (below average). I wanted to buy P-7811FX on sale for 1249 $ but I changed my mind because of couple main reasons: 1. Same design as P-6860FX, no changes at all, only hardware components. 2. Small hard drive, only 200 Gb (P-6860FX has 320 Gb). It doesn't make a sense to downgrade from 320 to 200 because performance 320 Gb 5400 RPM and 200 Gb 7200 RPM almost identical. 3. No Bluetooth. 4. New 1920x1200 is too much for 9800M GTS graphic card (you'll have a problems playing last games on native resolution) although new screen is much better. 5. P-6860FX was much cheaper at that moment."

What's great about it: Screen size, hard drive, ram, webcam, oooo love the glossy finish, and the GFX card. <3 What's not so great: 1.83ghz processor. It's still not a con though, runs anything.
"I owned this laptop since my birthday on the 4th of August, and I LOVE it. I play call of duty 4 professionally and nothing hauls more *butt* than this laptop. I get 190 frames on all settings maxed out on high texture maps. I overclocked my processor to 2.2ghz"

What's great about it: Speed, Screen size What's not so great: Weight
"This is great laptop. I have a Gateway desktop that I liked, but wanted to get a laptop to replace it. Researched for a while before deciding on this one. Love the speed that it has and that I can upgrade the processor if I need to in the future without a lot of pain. It's really heave but that is to be expected when buying a desktop replacement. It has plenty of storage and the graphics are great with the discreet video memory. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking to play games and/or replace a desktop."

What's great about it: great when it worked. What's not so great: Had laptop for 3 months before the wireless internet card broke and I have not seen the computer since, going on 1 month
"Well where should I start. I owned this computer for 3 weeks before the wireless card went down. The computer was great while I had it but I would hope a new laptop would be functional longer than 3 weeks. I called Gateway and they sent me a box to to send the broken computer back to them in. They said it would take 2 weeks for the laptop to be repaired and returned to me, I am now working on 1 month with no end in sight. I have called 4 seperate times only to be placed on hold for 45 min. each time and then told that the part is on order and they do not know when it will be coming in. One time I was even told the laptop was fixed and on the way back to me. When I looked up the tracking number it was of the box they sent to me to send my broken cpu back to them in! Another time after waiting 45 min. I asked to speak with a manager and was told that the managers don't take calls they only manage the facility.
So I am still waiting to hear when the laptop will be fixed and sent back to me so please be aware that if yours breaks down like mine did, look out , Gateway's repair service is a discrace."

What's great about it: Number pad (full size keyboard), plays games on max settings, greatest value EVER! What's not so great: Gets hot while using the video card on max, actually shut off once for being too hot, needs raised base
"This is the greatest laptop of all times for gamers on a budget. The only problem I have ever had with it was it started to shut itself off after gaming for a few hours. It needs better cross flow for air below it."

"This is the best Gaming Laptop you can get for the money. It has ran every game I have put on it like a dream. I am running Crysis completely maxed out with very little hinders. Crysis will run very well on Very High graphics settings but runs best on High graphics settings. The laptop is just down right sexy to look at. Very fast with the 64 bit Vista. I have no complaints about this machine I recommend it to anyone. I had my choice between this machine and an Alienware. I definitly made the right choice. I love it"

What's great about it: Price per value What's not so great: none
"This computer is awesome! The processor speed is really not a hindrance at all. This is a fast machine that would compare to much higher priced laptops. The reason I gave the display 4 instead of 5 is the screen resolution is 1440x 900. Now I know that the newer Gateway is out, and I would also recommend getting that one over this one, unless you catch a great deal. I caught this one on sale for 1099 - couldn't pass that up!"

THIS IS AN AMAZING COMPUTER; do not get it!!
08/19/2008
By BigRedGames
What's great about it: Awesome graphics, beautiful screen, very fast, and overall just amazing; runs Crysis beautifully; INCREDIBLE PRICE!! What's not so great: Made with cheap, weak plastics; fairly large; THERE IS A NEWER, BETTER VERSION OUT NOW
"This is an absolutely AMAZING computer; you should not get it!! That's right. I do NOT recommend buying this computer at all. Why? Because for only $100-$200 more (depending on if Best Buy is running a sale at the time or not), you can get the newly released model of this computer which has a much faster processor, faster RAM, more Cache memory, faster hard drive, and the incredible new NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS video card. Only $100 more!! For an incredibly better computer. You would have to be crazy not to take that deal!! If you are convinced, let me give you some nice, cold, hard statisitcs (listing the stats of the P-7811FX, the new one, first, followed by the stats of this, the old one): Processor: 2.26 GHz compared to 1.86 GHz System Bus: 1066 MHz compared to 667 MHz Cache Memory: 3GB compared to 2GB Hard Drive Speed: 7200 RPM compared to 5400 RPM Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTS compared to the 8800 GTS Now you cannot look at that and tell me the extra $100 is not worth it! This laptop, the P-6860FX, is an amazing laptop. I love it. It has been incredible. But I cannot even begin to describe to you how disappointed I was when I went back on bestbuy.com looking for a backpack and saw the new P-7811FX out FOR ONLY $100 MORE!! Without a doubt, that new laptop is an insane deal. Because like I said, I have this older model, and it is already amazing, so I can't even imagine how amazing that new one is with what superior hardware it has. But now, setting aside the fact that Gateway has released this new model which is much better, let me give you my perspective on just the P-6860FX. Pros: It is truly an amazing machine that can compete with the likes of almost any gaming laptop, or even desktop, out there. I have not experienced any lag running any game yet, even Crysis. That's right. This laptop can run Crysis almost perfectly if you keep the graphics at about medium and turn the anti-aliasing up to x8. And let me tell you, it looks absolutely awesome. The even better part about this machine: the price. You will not find a better price for a machine of this capacity. Gateway truly did a great job making a powerful, yet affordable, machine. Cons: Although all the hardware inside the laptop is incredible, the physical aspect of the laptop itself is lacking. Its made with cheap plastics that seem to be weak and flemsy and leave fingerprint smudges every time you touch it. It scratches fairly easy on the edges around the screen. The 17" screen itself is beautiful, but as of right now, I still have not found a bag large enough to fit it- even ones that said they are made for 17" screens. The problem is that the battery pack sticks out of the back about an inch and a half or so. And speaking of batteries, the battery life can be quite short since it is powering such a large screen. Other than that, I have not had one problem with this computer. It is amazing, and if it were not for the release of the new P-7811 FX, I would recommend it to everyone I know, gamers and non-gamers alike."
