Disappointing Performance
12/23/2008
By Yardbird

What's great about it: It does print quickly with good quality
What's not so great: Real problem with paper feed
"I have to agree with the review by fattywhale earlier. I constantly have to fool with the paper or an envelope to get it to feed into the printer. It's developed the habit of running 2 or 3 blank pieces of paper through it prior to the actual document. I'm going to try to get some help from HP but I'm sure they're going to blame it on the paper quality or something equally silly. My old HP that finally died after 6 years was running the same ream of paper with no problem."

Don't Let the Low Price Fool You

What's great about it: Easy set-up and great quality prints, great price
What's not so great: A little slow to print after choosing from computer
"I was a little concerned about the price for this All in One Printer at Best Buy. I bought it one day after Black Friday for $52.99. After an easy set-up on my desk I was very satisfied in the quality of the copier. I checked the scan function and it worked very well and sent the doc to the software that is included. If I were to complain about one minor thing it would be the time it takes to recognize a print command from the computer to the All in One. It's a little slow but very tolerable considering the savings I received by opting to buy this one. Great little machine with a small footprint for your desk."

Wouldn't function with XP Media Center 2002
11/15/2008

What's great about it: Better price than Canon
What's not so great: Could not get print function to work
"I had high hopes for this printer, but even after 3 hours on the phone with HP support, could not get the print function to work. The scanner worked fine, but any attempt to print would cause the application to crash (Word, Excel, Picasa, etc.). It appears the print driver had a conflict with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002, and the install/uninstall process was painfully slow."

Nice product. I am baffled. Bought it for scanner.

What's great about it: Price, ease of use and easy setup
What's not so great: Cannot find dpi adjustment
"Even HP tech could not tell me how to adjust dpi when scanning photos. One hour online with the tech and he finally said, "There is no dpi on this machine."
However, specifications clearly state "Copy resolution up to 600 dpi in black."
I like the machine very much but am wondering if I have to get another scanner."

What's great about it: Features and ease of use
What's not so great: Nothing yet
"This is my first 3-1 and I must say, I cant be more pleased. Even though its an ink jet, it still prints pretty quickly and the software it comes with is very easy to use. Great overall."

I primarily needed a scanner
11/02/2008

What's great about it: Nice price, easy to setup, software is fantastic
What's not so great: Print time is somewhat slow.
"I already own a Dell Laser 1110 printer, which also works great. I mainly bought this unit for the scanner and I must say that the scan quality is nearly perfect, especially for what I need it for. I also intend to make use of the copy function. Printing documents will be done with my Dell, but the scanner for this HP 4280 is well worth the price. I got mine for less than is advertised here, and this price is very nice for what you get for it. If you are looking at this product I assume you don't need it for heavy use, but simply as an every now and then type of function. I recommend for those with this kind of need."

What's great about it: Great price, fast printing when set on "draft"
What's not so great: Not as fast as more expensive printers, ink runs out very quickly
"I use this printer for school, I am a full-time experimental psychology graduate student and have to print at least 10-20 50+ page articles off a week. The printer is quick when I set it to "draft" but the ink runs out very quickly. I think HP makes a "xl" version of their cartridges so I am going to see if I can find them somewhere and hopefully it will last longer than one week. You can't go wrong with this one considering the price. It is adequate in every respect unless you are planning on using it to print out high quality pictures (you would need to replace the ink often). This is a quality printer if you, like me, need to print in black and white most of the time."

Inks run out fast

What's great about it: Good price, works great
What's not so great: Ink runs out quickly
"Bought this in August and have already had to replace the black ink cartridge in it twice & the color cartridge once and it came with one of each. So I have used three black cartridges total and two color. Other than that I have no complaints on how the printer functions."

Just So-So
10/22/2008
By OhioScott

What's great about it: Fine as a basic everyday printer
What's not so great: Scanner is worthless
"This is fine as an everyday printer and does nice job rendering colors and is quick but getting the scanner included is no added value. The scan bed is so small even a standard size magazine page like Time, Newsweek, Motor Trend, etc, is too wide to be captured on the tiny glass and the lack of controls for the scanning function is a real drawback.
The value is really lacking too because once you buy the required cable (sold separately) that always used to come with HP products you're going to add at the least another $45 dollars or so to the price.
This is the first HP product in ten years that I ever regretting buying."

Huge headache
10/19/2008
By fattywhale
|
What's great about it: Cheap
What's not so great: You get what you pay for.
"I am a college student, so I need to print a lot of coursework, and sometimes this thing is a bigger headache than whatever assignment I am printing out. Every time I print something the paper feed does not work and I have to actually push the paper in for it to start feeding. Then the printer decides to feed out several blank pages, anywhere from one to five pages. Paper often jams. Takes several tries and a lot of foul language to finally print any papers.
I trusted the HP brand of printers, I've trusted them in the past, but this is the last product I will be buying from them."

reliable printer

"I have had this printer/scanner/copier for quite a while now and have never had a problem with it. It does exactly what I need it to do. The pages that I scan come out neat and clear. The printer itself is sometimes a little slow (i.e. sometimes it will print one page of a document then wait about 10-15 seconds before it prints the next) but the quality is great."

Re-install Issue Solved
09/27/2008
By BestBoyo
from Ma.
|
What's great about it: Low Price
What's not so great: Lousy Instuctions
"I have a C4280 all in one and it had the same re-install problem. This may solve the problem for other HP all in one users. The reason that the C4280 re-installs the drivers every time it is started is something I stumbled upon. The install instructions did not address this problem. If my laptop is rebooted with the USB cable plugged in it begins to re-install the drivers. If you reboot the pc with the C4280 unplugged the pc flashes a message that says "C4280 is disconnected". After this message appears the C4280 can be plugged in and used normally. I do not know if the cable would need to be disconnected every time a desktop computer is rebooted, but the cable may need to be disconnected to avoid the issue of needing to re-install the printer drivers."
