What's great about it: Excellent Photo quality, awesome Live View feature replaces the need for the viewfinder, nice lens out of the box
What's not so great: pricey, slight learning curve for newbies
I bought this camera this week. I have been tracking the prices on it for several months and it finally fell in the price range that I felt comfortable with. I am new to the field of photography. I have had digital cameras in the past but never a real camera like this one. one of the main reasons I chose a DSLR was so I would not lose my shots any more waiting 2-3 seconds for the digital sensor to capture a photo every time. None of that with this camera. I purchased a high speed sd card with this and it takes awesome pictures on the fly with very little setup time required. Even though I am still learning about all the features on this camera...I'm loving it!

Canon can finally provide a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience with its new and improved Xsi. After last year’s Rebel Xti, which didn’t improve much from its predecessor, the Canon EOS Rebel Xsi is upgraded with better body design, performance, and image quality. After 20 years of EOS investments, the Xsi successfully proves Canon’s technological capability in expanding its market for both professionals and amateurs. Finally, with its news specs, the Xsi is a product of great value at an affordable price.
First off, the new XSi has a new inspired design: either a solid black or a less attractive two-tone silver and black. Slightly larger than the Xti, it has a smooth plastic body with a better grip. Most of th buttons lie under the right hand, in which each feels different so that they are easy to recognize without looking. Moreover, the Xsi does not require a two-handed operation. In addition to the grip, the 3-inch LCD is larger and 50% brighter with a redesigned control layout. A grid-line and live histogram help with shot composition and exposure. Available for the first time on the Canon DSLR market, the Live View mode also helps the photographer to shoot from different angles.
Easy operation is a definite guarantee with the new Xsi. The new focus capabilities are astounding with two new auto focus features available. In addition, the new menu is more personal, which can build a go-to list of your frequently accessed settings. You can play with the ISO sensitivity or your Live View settings for example.
Let’s not forget to mention the product’s enhanced image quality. The 12 megapixel delivers better resolution. Like the Xti, the 9-point user selectable autofocus system is still better than the Nikon D60’s 3 point focus. The XSi also includes the very cool High Light Tone Priority, which provides better tonal detail in various settings. In regards to exposure modes, the Auto Lighting Optimizer adjusts contrast and brightness. The Xsi also has the usual easy to control shutter speeds, exposure, white balance, metering, and six pre-set modes, which all deliver superior color accuracy, dynamic range, sharpness/ menial grain, and reduced noise.
In addition to the great image quality, the other specs are helpful too but no different from the Xti. The CMOS for example, a signature spec of Canon products, amplifies each pixel site and contributes to longer battery life. The EOS Integrated Cleaning system is also another unique spec, which reduces, repels, and removes dust.
All in all, the Xsi, is certainly an improved product, surpassing and different from the features of other DSLRs. It is versatile, easy-to-use, and reasonably priced.

What's great about it: It is well worth the money
What's not so great: The stablization unit is in the lens, which makes the lenses more expensive
This camera is a great buy for the money. It is easy to use, and very easy to jump in and start using if you having had a DSLR before. The lens that is comes with is good for starters, but you can easily upgrade to longer lenses. The picture quality is excellent and the camera fits comfortably my hands. I recommend getting the Canon starter kit with the bag, extra battery and lens filter to complete the package.

What's great about it: The pictures are very clear, including close-ups of flowers etc.
What's not so great: Cannot see image in screen prior to shooting
This is the best camera we have bought to date. We are not professionals, just use it for family and nature shots, vacations and pets, but the picture quality is excellent, and it is very easy to use. It has more functionality that we could tap into if we become so inclined, but it's also good for basic photography. We are very happy with it, and probably won't be trading up for a long time.

What's not so great: No video, Dirty sensor
This camera has been an excellent upgrade from my point and shoot. Excellent functionality and very easy to use. Menu and controls are well located and the picture quality is quite good. Bought a floor model and had to send it off for cleaning due to a dirty sensor, but otherwise a great purchase!

What's great about it: Easier to use than most of the point and shoot camers that i have owned
What's not so great: Nothing that i can think of
I have had this camera since December of 09 and i still can't get over how amazing it is. I had debated on getting a Nikon SLR but i chose this one instead and am so happy that i did. I even have friends that want to model for me just so they can see how great it makes them look.

What's great about it: Easy to use; crisp photos; zoom lens is a miracle for moms in the back row of the gym!
What's not so great: Price point; easy to use but requires some get acquainted time if you're used to point and shoot
As a mom, I often want up close shots that are crisp and clear from a distant view in the audience. I couldn't get that with a point and shoot camera. This camera does it all and the details are superb! Easy to use once you understand the settings and functions. Great pictures.

What's great about it: Easy to use and understand, lots of features, great pics
What's not so great: no video, limited zoom capabilities on the 18-55mm lens
This is my first DSLR camera and i love it!! This is a great camera. Needed something quicker and higher quality with a new baby. I was torn between a Nikon, this camera, and a Canon that was a step above this one. My sister-in-law has the 10mp XS and my father-in-law has this camera, and they both loved ther Canon cameras. The only option that i thought Nikon had that Canon didn't was a "live view mode" that enables you to look at the object your shooting using the LCD screen - turns out the Canon has this feature too, but only in special modes and you have to turn it on with a few steps. Plus, the Canon has all of the buttons on the body of the camera labeled so you know what to push - the Nikon does not.
I thought about gettign a higher end Canon, but it was not worth the extra $250 - $1,000 for the upgrade in being able to have video or more megapixels. This model has everything you need to take great pictures. I wish it had video capabilities, but for the money you save in not getting that option you can buy a more suitable video camera.
Maybe it's my lack of knowledge about these styles of cameras, but i thought the lens that came with the camera (18-55mm) would be a little more powerful. Not to worry with this camera though, b/c you can buy different lenses that meet your needs - new lenses are expensive, but worth the investment.
Overall, this is a great camera that is easy to use and takes great pictures. It takes the picture when you push the button, so there is no delay like with point-and-shoot cameras. It also has the burst made that keeps taking pictures if you hold the button down, which is great for action shoots or if you have a small child. I highly recommend this camera b/c you get more bang for your buck with this model and with Canon.

What's great about it: Affordable, sharp photos, fast autofocus, long battery life
What's not so great: none or I wouldn't have bought it
I researched many different entry-level DSLRs and found that Canon had the most positive reviews and best photo samples. I orginally intended to buy the Canon XS for financial reasons, but when I got to the store, I saw that the XSi was on sale for $599.99, only $30.00 more than the XS. It was a no-brainer. The XSi has two more megapixels, a larger LCD, and spot metering. This is my first DSLR, but it took me about an hour to figure out all the menus, and with the help of the manual, I am learning how to quickly adjust things like white balance and metering modes. You could spend more and get a pro-style camera, but if you're just a hobbyist like me, save your money and buy this relatively inexpensive yet feature-rich camera.

What's great about it: I love that you can see the picture after you take it, how you can view the histogram, set up white balance
What's not so great: not the best starter lens but it works until you can afford to buy a better one
I love how easy it is to go from auto mode to manual mode. I am taking a photography class at STI in Sioux Falls, SD. I'm learning how white balance is used in taking pictures. I like how easy it is to change settings on the camera so you can go from auto to manual without to much problems. It is a great camera for the money. I have gotten great results when using this camera.

Everything about this camera is AWESOME!! I love all things that it can do!!!
The only thing is that is a little hard sometimes is to get used to is all the cool features. There are so many that sometimes it gets a little confusing. But that's when you just need to take the time to learn about all of them :). I'm enjoying this camera very much and will be shooting my Best Friend's wedding in September so I can't wait to see what it really can do!!!

What's great about it: Very easy to use, great pictures. Flexibility is awesome with both the packaged lens and the extra zoom lens.
What's not so great: Nothing so far.
I've had Canon cameras all of my life, going back to my Canon AV-1 in the mid 1970's up through the purchase of this XSi in January 2010. This camera is very easy to use -- I haven't explored all of the advance features yet, but have had great success (in a short period of time) in taking picture of my kids in their sports activities -- which is the main reason I bought the camera. I took advantage of the recent package deal: camera w/ 18-55mm lens, 55-250mm extra zoom lens and XSi starter kit w/ extra battery. Very good deal! The only minus was the lack of included SD card, but I guess that gives you the flexibility to choose which size card you really want. I would definitely recommend this camera to everyone.

What's great about it: Easy to transition from P&S camera, great price, quality & selection of additional lenses etc.
What's not so great: None so far
Let me start by saying that I am a bit OCD when it comes to making purchases. I have read online reviews of many SLR cameras, been to photography websites, message boards, gone to stores, you name it, I've done it. It came down to this Canon XSi and a Nikon D5000 for me. Everyone I know who takes pictures recommended the Canon except one, and all of the websites recommended Canon, so that's why I chose this camera.
The Canon XSi is a great product. I really coudn't find any bad reviews out there for it. I highly recommend it to anyone who can't make up their mind or is just starting out in the SLR world of photography like myself. I've never used an SLR camera of any type and it was so simple to put together. I just got out the body, attached the lens, put in the battery and SD card and PRESTO, it was good to go. It took great shots right out of the box. I did have the settings on automatic. I tried changing the settings to manual, I wasn't quite ready for that yet.
There are great tips in the manual on how to use and set up the different modes & settings. I got the package deal that came with the extra zoom lens, bag, and UV filter. This only cost $749 for the whole package. I couldn't have asked for a better setup at a better price.
The only thing that was a minus for me was that there is no video capability with this camera. I really don't use that option often, but many people want that option when purchasing a SLR. I do know that the next step up (T1i) has that option but it's quite a bit more ($799 for camera only).
