Nice features for the money08/08/2008
By TechSwamifrom Riverside, California
What's great about it: Excellent Photo quality, awesome Live View feature replaces the need for the viewfinder, nice lens out of the box What's not so great: pricey, slight learning curve for newbies
"I bought this camera this week. I have been tracking the prices on it for several months and it finally fell in the price range that I felt comfortable with. I am new to the field of photography. I have had digital cameras in the past but never a real camera like this one. one of the main reasons I chose a DSLR was so I would not lose my shots any more waiting 2-3 seconds for the digital sensor to capture a photo every time. None of that with this camera. I purchased a high speed sd card with this and it takes awesome pictures on the fly with very little setup time required. Even though I am still learning about all the features on this camera...I'm loving it!"

Cannon Rebel XSi 55-250mm
What's great about it: Everything about the Rebel XSi is awesome, from price to ease of operation !! What's not so great: Need more accessaries for camera and lenes for blocking heavy sunlight.
"To sum it up, This is one big bang for your buck. Consider what you get and what you would pay if it weren't on sale or trying to purchase through a camera shop. I stand behind the Cannon Rebel and have many perfect pictures to show for it. By all means I'm a novice at this with not much time to learn the real ins & outs of photography. The photo's I take with the Rebel XSi are the best I've ever seen and with the 18-55mm & 55-250 Telephoto Lenes included you can be well on your way to the perfect setup up for a novice like me or a professional looking for a quick interchangable sure shot camera. Now let me set the situation. I was at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Feb-Mar 2009 Nextel Racing Program. I show up for my free pit pass at the LVMS Dirt Track for pictures in the pits of the USAC Midgets and USAC Wingless Sprint Cars. I'm using my Rebel XSi and using the 18-55mm Lens since I'm close up and getting really nice pictures of unbeleivable color quality and clearity. Than all of a sudden a flight of 6 A-10 Thunderbolts decide to come flying over in formation doing their awesome manuvers pior to landing at Nellis. I was able to switch lenes over to the 55-250mm lens in a matter of seconds and get the perfect shot of the aircraft that I was after. It will be one I will charish for a long time. On the following day at the Super Speedway, I was comfortably seated in the Petty Terrance, 2nd row from the top. With the 55-250mm lens attached, I was able to get brillerant pit shots that were breathless to say the least. When I downloaded into the computer that night, I was speechless. The next day at the Nationwide Race I honed my skills with more perfect pictures. The pics down pit road were so clear and perfect, that it looked as though I were standing right on pit road while shooting the shot. During the Nextel Race I was ready. Over the 5 day raceweekend, I shot over 5,000 pictures with not one of them a blurr. I've done the same for drag races with outstanding results. I take my Rebel XSi with me where ever I go. I just purchased the 70-300mm Image Stabilization Lens and can not wait until Feb 2010. For examples of my shots with the Rebel XSi with the 18-55mm Image Stabilization Lens & 55-250mm Image Stabilization Lens please visit myspace psgearjamer@msn."

What's great about it: Great quality pics, much better than point and shoots What's not so great: Feels slightly flimsy, but seems to hold up well
"Bought this one after much searching for an upgrade to a point and shoot. This camera met my expectations for an entry level DSLR. Has enough SLR features for basic users and also has the easy program setting for really simple, near point and shoot simplicity. Pictures are great. Totally recommend for entry level SLR. Though for a real DSLR power user, it may not be ideal."

What's great about it: Canon camera product, best camreas out there in my opinion What's not so great: Price
"Well, I had this camera for a long time now and decided to write a in depth review about it, or so I hope.
Pros / Recommendations: *Back when I first got it, it was the best in the market (now there is the T1i or something like that). *Batter consumption is good. *Ease of use, even for beginners who just want to take pictures. *Buy two lens if you can afford it, one for close and one for far range. *Buy extra batter or three, you never know when you will need a spare. *Buy a good card, a high-end camera like this needs a good card to make it function correctly. (Extreme 3 would be my choice, but look at the class of the card. Anything from class1-2 is too low for writing speed, get class3-6 for decent/good features.)
Cons / Wishes: *No movie function, HD recording function for movie/backplay. So strictly for photographers. Although, it would be nice feature for this camera. *After having it for a year or so the pop-up flash decided to not work. However contacting Canon reps and getting a repair on it, it was done quickly. Although, the camera does make more of a noise now popping up (mechanical noise) than before. My guess was the spring didn't unlatch before so the replacement spring wasn't set in so well. *Heavy and big, hard to get around with; so hopefully in the future a more micro version or a slimmer version for the EOS. *Not many sub products for this model, such as a water cover case or some sort of protection to make it more durable from bangs and bumps.
Overall: *Happy with the purchase, it brings back great memories when I look at the pictures I've taken with it. Highly recommendable if your want a good camera and to capture those precious moments in life."

What's great about it: Not complicated....very easy to operate. What's not so great: nothing that I can find
"I am very happy with my purchase. Not only is the camera terrific, but the Best Buy store in Warner Robins, Georgia was awesome to do business with. The camera is light weight and easy to handle. The photos produced by this camera are great. I am pleased with the overall performance and so glad I purchased a Canon."

What's great about it: I love the picture quality and the 3" lcd, live view is also neat What's not so great: live view autofocusing
"I am upgrading from the rebel xt. I upgraded mainly because my eyes got tired of straining at the 1 1/2" lcd. If it werent for the small lcd , I would have kept the xt. I do however love the xsi and the extra megapixels. The 3" screen is absolutely awesome, why didnt canon do this to start with.....duh they wanted peoiple like me to spend more $$$$$$. The large lcd prevents me from printing otherwise blurred images, that never showed up on that little tiny 1 1/2" lcd. The image stabilizing lens is also cool. I have always owned canon products , 35mm-digital, and they are and always have been very dependable and durable. If you have been thinking about a digital slr purchase, this should be the one at the sale price its a great deal. $699..... dont forget to add it to your rewards points guys......."

What's great about it: this is a great first time upgrade from a point and shoot to a DSLR that didn't break the bank. What's not so great: Would have been nice if it came with a basic memory card.
"I was looking for my next camera and wanted to step up from the point and shoot. I have a few friends that already shoot Canon and decided this was the way to go. I really like the results I have been getting. Its a great camera and every time I use it I find myself learning more and taking better pictures. I will admit the Nikons seem to have a little more intuitive interface but the Canon was just a better deal."

What's great about it: Easy to handle, comes with a great starter lens, easy to use interface What's not so great: nothing
"I just recently got into the SLR field 3 months ago. I would like to say that I am done with point and shoot cameras. Nothing against the point and shoot, but I am now a dedicated SLR'er. The learning curve was hard at first, but once I got to playing with different settings and taking pictures, it became easy to use. Easy to handle and the pictures I have taken with the starter lens are nothing short of amazing! My wife and I love the picture quailty compared to the old point and shoot we have."

What's great about it: Takes great photos and easy to learn new advanced techniques What's not so great: Seems like too much to spend on a camera, but the picture quality is worth it.
"I have only had this camera for a few days and we have already taken over 1500 photos. It is very easy to use for all levels of photo takers. I like the more advance stuff and the children down to age 6 are also capable of taking great photos. Seems expensive at first, but the quality of photos is outstanding. I like the computer editing features available in the more advanced options.
Enjoy!"

What's great about it: Excellent value, crystal clear pictures, sturdy What's not so great: Nothing
"This D-SLR is of amazing quality. The shutter speed is extremely quick. The 9-point focus method is very convenient and helpful, allowing you to capture clarity in multiple areas of a photo in each shot. Minimal reading of directions is needed to comprehend the various camera settings (i.e. aperture, shutter speed, and other modes). Even auto mode is of great superiority. The camera occasionally goes on sale or is offered as a package deal, and I recommend waiting for these opportunities. If impatience prevails, though, do not hesitate to purchase this exceptional camera for the full price."

What's great about it: Ready to use and priced under $1000 great value. CMOS sensor is nice; Canon has always been my favorite and rebel is too What's not so great: Instructions a bit confusing and hard to understand.
"CMOS sensor is nice; Canon has always been my favorite and rebel is too. I spent a lot of time researching cameras to try and disprove my choice, but the more I researched the more I gravitated to the Rebel. The macro works great for my needs and works easily with photoshop software. I like the CMOS sensor and the lower amount of noice. The long battery life is useful also since my other canon tended to use batteries a lot faster."

What's great about it: Ready to go as soon as you turn it on, kit lens with IS is decent, better than basic RAW performance, CMOS sensor What's not so great: not full frame sensor, smaller body than some of the other Canon models, some things not explained well in the book
"I started out with a film based 35mm SLR in the early 90's, also a Canon. That was a big influence in my decision to stay Canon because I was already familiar with the general concepts of how the different modes worked. Once I got a digital point & shoot the film camera kind of sat in the closet due to the digital ease. Problem is the pictures were poor quality really.
So I went looking for my first DSLR. Spent weeks reading the reviews and decided to stay with Canon. Unlike my film camera even though many of the same modes are included like portrait, landscape, sports, full auto, program, Av, and Tv. The XSi has a lot more configuration and some of it is not explained very well, like which picture settings do I want to mimick 35mm film from the choices of "standard", "landscape", "neutral", "faithful". for instance.
The camera takes very good pictures though. I did some macro work with the kit lens this weekend and it turned out pretty nice. Also picked up the 75-300 EF mount which has worked well too on it. It's pretty nice to shoot in RAW format then be able to tweak a shot in Photoshop without destroying data in the process. Something I can't do with my .jpg only point & shoot or scanned at the developer picture CD's of my film.
Gave it a lower mark on value for money since now that the T1i is out I'd have expected this model to fall in price some. Compared to others in the price range at same megapixels though, the Canon wins when you start moving up in ISO rating. The Canon uses a CMOS sensor where the others still use CCD. This means as the ISO setting gets higher, the Canon will have less noise in the picture. Canon is the ONLY mfr. to give out a CMOS sensor at this price point."

What's great about it: takes great pictures, easy to use, great camera all around What's not so great: lens that comes with the camera, other than that nothing
"This camera is a great buy. I have had the camera for about 6 months now. I love it. It is easy to use, takes great pictures, has a great battery life. The only down fall is the lens that comes with the camera which is the only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I would definately recommend buying the body only and invest in a better lens, it doesnt zoom in much at all. But overall this is a great camera definately worth the money."

I shot this today out of boredom. The camera catches every detail. And all it took was the turn to the setting and boom!
What's great about it: Its fun and easy to use! What's not so great: cannot use live LCD viewfinder without tripod or being superstill
"After joining a photojournalism class in high school, I became very interested in photography. I purchased a canon 35mm camera and fell in love with it. As the years went by, I decided to go digital. I was never satisfied with the simple portable point and shoot digital cameras. In fact, I went through several. But I finally decided to just buy the Canon Xsi. So far I love it. its fun and easy to use. Its bulky, but it makes me feel like a pro. LOL! I take it wherever i go and just shoot whatever whenever. If your just one of those people who permanently has a camera attached to your hand, then this is the one for you."

What's great about it: great picture and price and weight What's not so great: small camera grip for big hands
"I have had this camera for 9 months now and with over 7,000 pics taken, it is going strong. I really put this camera through its paces and here is what I have concluded. As an Entry level dslr, it is fantastic and the pics are wonderful. Its easy to figure out the menu system and the positioning of the buttons for iso and the front click wheel is very convienient. Being able to see the seetings in the eyepiece has more than enough info that you could possibly need. Just wished the eyepiece itself had more distance away from the camera so your nose won't keep hitting the huge 3.0" screen (easily fixed with changing eyepiece extender). In reference to the camera build, I just wished that the camera was a little longer so gripping it was easier, but purchased battery grip to extend the length to remedy that and now can shoot and not worry about dropping it. The camera body is high quality plastic in matte finish and looks good and feels light enough not to fatigue your hands. I purchased short and superzoom lenses for this canon and even dropped it a few times with lens attached and no problems with bayonnet mount as of yet. The new battery designed for the camera lasts forever and you can easily shoot all day without worry of running out of juice. The 18-55mm kit lens is good starter lens for its wide angle, image stabilized function but as with most kit lenses, lower quality body construction (plastic) than other lenses in its class. Overall, I would recommend this to potential buyers with or without the kit lens and with prices always fluctuating you can always get a good deal."

What's great about it: Very easy to start using What's not so great: I have not found anything yet!
"Years ago I was given a Cannon AE-1 by my brother and I loved that old 35 mm camera. It took outstanding pictures. I wanted a new one in the digital age and came across this one. Best choice I ever made. I'm not an expert photographer but I love playing around with pictures since I spend a lot of time outdoors. This camera has the clearest shots I have ever seen. After reading reviews on here I took advice from them and found a deal with Best Buy that sold this camera with an additional zoom lens with a built in stabilizer. I HIGHLY recommend that. I've shot pics before without it and it truly makes a difference. Downloading is easy, shooting is easy, all the functions are easy. Cannon is way above the rest when it comes to quality and user friendliness!"
