What's not so great: Ease of use (you need to read, read, test, test)

"Awesome camera for people venturing into the DSLR world for the first time. I've started mastering camera controls and photo basics and I'm now getting better and better pictures. I've read reviews about this camera and it beats other same class brands. I'm loving it more every day!"

What's great about it: Image Quality, Low Noise, easy to use, Live View, IS lens
What's not so great: Slow Live View, a little expensive

"The Canon Rebel is one of the best entry dSLRs on the market right now. The Rebel XSI's image quality is very good and easily keeps up with the competition. The addition of live view is a welcome sight to the Rebel line up.
The ergonomics of the XSI is pretty good. Some might find it a bit small, but I found that it fit well in my hands.
You got a nice 3 inch screen on the back, be warned thought, if you're using polarized sunglasses you might have trouble using the viewfinder, at least I did.
The ISO levels can easily be used up to 1600, day or night. Just be sure to use some software to tidy it up later. You do start to have grain at high isos but still very good.
Adjusting the main settings were a breeze since the camera provides direct access to things like White balance, ISO...etc.
One thing about the live view, it's SLOW, it isn't like using the screen on a point and shoot. You have to switch to live view, and you have to hold down and let get on the button with the asterisk on the to right hand corner of the camera.
Down sides is the price, it's pretty pricey, but it's pretty good for the money. but all in all a very good, solid, camera.

What's not so great: None.

"This is a camera that targets the consumer market rather than the professional level. Yet, it incorporates at least advanced amateur level performance. It is light weight, has a 3" LCD screen, has over 12 mega pixel capability, has raw capture capability, has high burst rate capability, and many other features which makes the Rebel XSI a great choice for those wanting the multi lens capability of a digital SLR."

What's great about it: Great starter dSLR, easy to use, unbelievable range of settings, incredible photos
What's not so great: price

"I got a point and shoot 6 months ago, and quickly realized that my wants/needs exceeded the cameras abilities. I quickly settled on the XSi as my dSLR of choice. It was a bit pricey for a beginner like me but once I learned about it I couldn't think about anything esle. Since I received it I have been super psyched about it. Its a great camera with lots of easy beginner settings, but now that I am learning about photography I am moving into a lot of the manual settings. The picture quality is great, although it is still the photographer who chooses subjects and composes the frame, the camera in no way holds me back. The only thing holding me back now is my own talent and skills. I highly highly recommend this camera for any beginners."

What's great about it: Take great pictures!
What's not so great: None so far

"I have owned this camera for a little over 3 weeks. It is awesome. This is my first dslr camera. I am coming from a 7 mp Sony point and shoot camera. I am now able to take zoomed in shots of my daughter playing soccer, before all I could do was take a picture of her on the field and she was so small in the pictures. Now I have clear close up shots of her kicking the ball! You won't be disappointed if you buy this camera!"

What's great about it: easy to use, great picture quality

"My husband and I bough this camera after our point and shoot had an unfortunate run in with a cup of coffee. We were planning on getting another point and shoot, however, I wanted to be able to take more professional looking pictures. There was a huge difference in what we had planned on paying and ultimately ended up paying after deciding to buy this one instead, but it was worth the extra money we spent. It was so easy to use right out of the box (no reading a manual for hours). You can just put it to one of the auto settings and take amazing pictures. We couldn't be happier we went this route instead of getting a lower-end camera."

What's great about it: Can take as many sport shots you want and the camera keeps up with you.
What's not so great: Still new to the many uses of it. Kind of complicated but the Geek Squad is there to help.

"This was a big purchase for me. I was tired of missing all the wonderful sport shots because my Kodak Z740 couldn't keep up. The price was great, because I watched it until it came on sell in a bundle. It came with the Rebel XSI starter kit and a lens all for $979.00. I also purchased an hour with the Geek Squad. I recommend that to anyone without knowledge of the camera like myself. They taught me plenty of uses that this camera had plus the wonderful pictures that it can take. I also purchased the telephoto lens. After I purchased my camera, I found the telephoto lens I wanted on sale at another store. Best Buy priced matched it so that I could buy it. They are more than willing to accomodate you and make sure that you are a happy customer and more important a returning customer. Don't ever forget that they price match. Now, I am looking into buying the wide zoom lens. It's important to have especially when you take a lot of group shots. My daughter and son play sports, dances etc... Now I can catch all the pic's. Don't get me wrong the Kodak took wonderful pictures, but you only had the chance to get one shot. This is a camera that I will keep for a long time. I also purchased Scrapbook software and Print Artist so that I can save and create memories for them for a life time. I give this camera and the Geek Squad an A+!!! P.S. Don't forget to purchase, I guess you would call it insurance. If you drop your camera and it breaks etc.... They replace it with a new one if it can't be repaired. This is a must for my bumbling hands and kids that want to use it. The cost is minimal and saves you a lot of money if it does break. I don't want to pay another $899.99 if I can help it."

First DSLR, Great Purchase   08/19/2008
By dave425 from Issaquah, WA

What's great about it: Canon Name, Quality, and Features
What's not so great: No major problems

"I have been using this camera for a couple months now and it is great. It is my first DSLR, but I have used 35mm SLR's before. It is well worth the added cost over a point-and-shot and light as well as easy to use. The included lens is decent for getting started. Learning to use the camera is a breeze. It is more about learning when to use what setting as opposed to how to actually set them. There a tons of menus of advanced options for those who need it. The screen is large and vibrant. The picture review system is great. (Canon, put the picture review system like this in your point-and-shoots!) Battery life is strong. I can go multiple sessions if I am not using the flash. Fantastic starter DSLR. Don't second guess this purchase."

Great DSLR   08/14/2008
By Rskye1 from Kansas City Area

What's great about it: image quality, sharpness, vivid colors
What's not so great: live view lacks continuous autofocus ability (see below)

"First my background: I would consider myself an advanced intermediate photographer. I take pictures of my family and friends, pets, vacations, photos at the zoo, animals in the wild, flowers… I will most likely have 8x10’s of my pictures made and just maybe an 11x14. I consider myself advanced because I know how to manually set a camera ie f-stop and shutter speeds.

My results after 2 days (90 pictures) with the XSi are great. Half of the pictures I have taken were just impulse pictures just trying to learn the cameras features and getting used to the autofocus, because other than a point and shoot I have only owned manual focus cameras. The other half of the pictures that I have taken were taken outside, inside, bright light, low light situations and some with the flash, only a couple of the photos have been taken in the fully auto modes. All the photo’s have vivid colors, good light/darkness and have been very sharp, I still have some images that are not in complete focus. This could be the fact that I am not used to the autofocus yet or it could be the depth of field of the lens. However as far as image quality I would give it a 9.5 out of 10 (because nothing is perfect). After transferring the images to my computer I actually thought some of them were good enough to be a picture from a magazine and I have already had a 8x10 printed.

Cons: The Live view on this camera does not continually autofocus. When using Live view you must push a secondary button (not the trigger button) to autofocus the image then you can take the picture and it will be focused. The possible problem is that if the subject or the camera moves the picture may no longer be in focus, so then you would have to re-autofocus the subject and then take the picture. If you are using a tripod and taking a picture of a still subject then the live view would be great, otherwise in my opinion it’s not worth just buying the camera for. Also if the live view is on too long then it will heat up the LCD and cause image quality degradation (see the manual). An example of live view auto focusing would be: a child swinging on a swing and you standing in front of the child. You can push the autofocus button and the picture will then be in focus but by the time you then push the trigger button the child has moved closer or farther away and may not be in focus anymore. However if you do not use the live view and look through the view finder the picture will most likely be in focus via the autofocus.

Overall: the live view does not make this act as a point and shoot camera so don’t expect it to. But the camera itself and the images it takes are great even at 3.5 picture per second. The 3” LCD lets you see your picture better and then you know if you need to retake or not. I would recommend this camera to anyone that wants professional quality images at a less than professional price. I would also recommend that you take a class or go to a local camera shop and have them walk you through the camera. Your picture taking skills will increase and your photos will show it.

Great buy!   08/03/2008
By Discojon from SC

What's great about it: Solid, easy-to-use camera.
What's not so great: None

"I bought this camera in store last week. Within minutes I had it up and running, in spite of my inexperience with D-SLRs. My previous digital camera was a Canon Powershot A30 so to say this is an improvement is somewhat of an understatement. I'm still learning to use it, and have decided to take a photography course. Its easy for a beginner but has more than enough features for advanced use. Best recommendation is to get good lenses for it. I just ordered a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS, which costed twice as much as the camera itself."

Simple to use, Nice feel, Great photos.....   07/28/2008
By techpal

"This Camera seems to do it all, quite nicely, I was a little suprised that the Live View feature does not function in the automatic/program modes, but the three inch monitor is a big improvement for viewing the pictures after you take them. So I am still happy, and won't discount my five point enthusiasm.

I like the weight and the grip, it just feels right to me. I got some really nice photos with the kit lens. Using it with my 580EX flash was also a breeze.

I am a point-and-shoot kinda guy, and this camera gets pro-looking shots in full automatic mode most of the time.
