I use this printer for all of its functions:
Printing: good, fast and uses little ink - color and black ink cartridges are cheap too.. which is a plus - you have two feeds (top or bottom) - stores paper within itself
Fax: good, quick, and prints confirmations
Copier: Superior! Has two feeds also, top and scanning bed - You can do up to 20 pages at a time in the feed - I have copied lecture notes and it's super fast
Scanning: I think my most favorite option in this printer! Scans quickly and has duplex double sided scanning which is a real benefit for lecture notes! I scan and it automatically formats into pdf or jpg (whatever you choose). It scans into a folder and everything is organized for you. Especially via the top feed, I can scan 20+ pages duplex and it doesn't jam the pages. (You have to make sure you align the pages evenly so you don't have issues)
What's great about it: FAST, SUPER FAST SCANNING AND COPYING! Prints well and fast - uses up VERY SMALL amounts of ink - photos come out great
What's not so great: Nothing so far! Size may be a little too big, but paper hides inside the printer

This is hands down the best printer for $200 and easily beats some that double in price. It prints fast, has great features like an ADF, auto duplex, it has a magazine tray for keeping paper hidden away, and makes changing printing mediums easy. The only knock against this printer is that you have to buy a printserver, or bluetooth adapter to print wirelessly. Although it has a network card built in so if you keep it in a home office you can connect it directly to your router or gateway. Photo quality also rivals more expensive photo printers. I highly recommend this printer
What's great about it: Great Price, Great Print Quality, Great Features
What's not so great: Not wireless out of box

I bought this all in one when it went on sale for $80 bucks off in Jan. I have used it often since. The scanner and printer work very well.
I haven't used the Fax or printed pictures with the unit as yet, so I can't comment on those features.
Overall I love this printer. The network feature is great. Just plug an ethernet cable into your router, load the software on all networked computers and you have a network printer. The wireless router lets me print from my laptop, and I can also scan images into the scanner save them to a network file and access them from any computer on my network.
I have scanned close to a thousand images so far, without a problem.
I've also printed several dozen pages (mostly B&W) and the black cartridge still shows as almost full. I read a few reviews where they stated that the in didn't last. I haven't noticed that.
While I'm not computer illiterate setting up a network printer seemed daunting, but saving the money otherwise spent on geeksquad support was a big motivator in giving it a try. I first had to set up a network with my computer(XP) and my laptop(Vista) which wasn't as hard as I thought, jsut followed the prompts.
The software bundled with the printer is a little much. There's six programs that can load with the printer software. I'm still not sure which ones I actually need so I've left them on for now.
Overall I think this is a great printer. Catch it on Sale and it's even better.
I've had no technical difficulties as yet, but I did get the extended warranty that BB offers.
Buy and enjoy.

For the past 20 years, I have only used HP products. I am glad I switched because Canon designed a great product that is user friendly and does everything I need in a printer / scanner very well. I am also impressed with how quietly and smoothly this printer works. My old printer could be heard all over the house. I use it mainly for a home business and would describe my printer use as average.
What's great about it: Easy Set Up. Good Value
What's not so great: Nothing to note

WE bought this Canon MX850 for our personal use even though we went to Best Buy to get a MX700 or MP620. We liked the control panel and menus much better than the MP620 and it had better resolution than the 700. It was Consumer Reports top rated "all-in-one" printer and it was on sale for less than the older 700 model (go figure?). After initial troubles getting the ink cartridges to work properly, it started producing excellent quality prints. We're looking forward to using all the features. Very nice printer/scanner/copier. Just wish it wasn't so big!
What's great about it: Excellent features, easy menus, fast, very good quality prints, auto document feed
What's not so great: Ink cartridge setup was troublesome, It's BIG!

I'd love to review how this printer works, but unfortunately I can't since it wouldn't install! I probably worked for about 2 hours and although the computer and install program 'detected' the printer correctly, the install software literally changed its mind and said printer NOT detected.
Oh well, it's boxed back up and will be returned.
What's great about it: Sounds Awesome
What's not so great: Won't Install
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Got the printer for use with Scanning and Faxing. Great features like scanning to multiple PC/Mac's in the home office. Being able to send a fax directly from my computer is great too. I was able to recycle a old Wireless G gaming adaptor to use in conjunction with the Ethernet port on the multifunctional printer.
I was impressed with the Pixma photo printer, and opted to stick with the quality I've had the past. The MX850 is defintly more serious than any multifunctional home unit I've used previously, and had a easy time setting it up. I got a good deal on it because I got a laptop at the same time so kudos to Best Buy for that.

This printer rocks! and I'm a picky shopper. It's a little bulky compared to the new pretty Epson's, but they suck and their customer service is a joke. HP's are a little more basic and easy, but they use weird ink.
Canon is best overall because they use two black inks, one for text, one for pics.
The only down side besides bulkiness is that when printing two-sided documents, it uses the pic black ink and doesn't come out as black or crisp. So if you need it perfect, you have to manually turn the pages over and send them through again. A very small downside though which is why I love and recommend this printer to everyone.

Overall fairly good value, however, uses ink extremely quickly and must replace BOTH cartidges in order for it to work at all.
What's great about it: Works quickly and easy to install
What's not so great: Needs both black and color cartidges FILLED to use black print outs and uses ink VERY QUICKLY

I switched from an HP printer to this printer. It is my first all-in-one printer purchase. So far the printer has been working exceptionally well. I am still on the first ink tanks that were supplied with the printer and I have had the printer for a month and a half. It seems like the tanks are of a good size; in the past I have used ink tanks that have too small of volume and run out of ink after just a week. Hooking it up to the network was easy and I even have it hooked up to my network at work so that I can work from home via remote desktop and print with this printer! Because it is hooked up directly to my network router, printing is a little slower than when I had my old HP hooked up directly to my computer. I suspect that it would be faster if it were directly connected to my PC. The fax option is easy to use, to send or receive faxes you just press one button. So far I have been able to fax out several different types of documents directly from my computer.
What's great about it: Networkable, individual ink tanks
What's not so great: printing is a little slow

My brief observations seem to indicate that the MX850 really doesn't improve upon the MP830 in some important areas.
I've owned the Canon MP830 for almost a year and and I just bought the Canon MX850 for a friend, so this is a direct user comparison. The 830 has been 100% reliable, producing excellent scans, prints, copies, and faxes. The MX850 is shorter in height, but otherwise just as bulky and heavy as the 830. Canon seems to be using a less robust scanner in the 850 than in the older MP830. Scans on the 830 are consistently over 4 times as fast: a 300 dpi 8.5x11" import scan into Photoshop CS3 took about 7 seconds with the 830 and about 33 seconds with the 850. The 830 wins in the noise category as well: it's roughly 60% quieter than the 850 when scanning. The 850 produces an annoying high pitched tone while the 830 has more of a low "murmer" sound. The 850, to be fair, will not be considered to be overly loud for most environments. With scanning, the color reproduction seems fairly close between the two machines, though I'm getting more color accuracy from the 830. Copies on the 830 produced more accurate colors, too: a copy of a TIME magazine cover on a matt photo paper (with settings set to "Matt Photo Paper" and "High") yielded extremely accurate reproductions of the original, while the the 850 veered too far toward the yellow end of the spectrum. Both produced excellent detail, though. Scans of dot-screen images were well rendered with the 830, while the 850 exhibited substantial moire effects.
Not sure about energy consumption comparisons though the 850's scanner seems to be using a more compact, (newer technology?) low lumens light-producing element than the very bright 830, so it probably uses less power.
Both machines will not disappoint, but with the advantage of my brief side-by-side comparison I'd recommend that you save $40 bucks and get the MP830. They both use the same ink cartridges. One last observation: the 850's LCD screen has a much higher pixel count, but that's only one small improvement amid the 830's superior traits.
I've learned that the MX850 is using "contact image sensor" technology (CIS) where as the MP830 is using the more common "charged-coupled devices" (CCD) technology. For those with an interest in the tech aspects I've included some info I found online:
"Most of large format scanners in use today use CCD (charge-coupled devices) as the primary data capture element in their construction. Recently this position has started to be challenged by the lower cost CIS (contact image sensor) technologies, which have come mainly from the small flatbed scanner market. The traditional CCD or camera scanner is able to produce a very high number of colours from the scanned original and copes with folded documents reasonably well. These scanners tend to be preferred where the image to be scanned is either photographic or has extensive use of tones and shading. CIS scanners have the advantage in providing all the optics in a space of 20 mm or so, which in the CCD scanner equivalent would occupy more like 600 mm. The secondary advantage is that CIS scanners have no need for magnification, lenses or a rigid frame - a major saving in construction costs and weight. However, CIS scanners do not do so well when scanning very pale colours or photographs."
