Excellent HDTV

What's great about it: Picture quality is outstanding
What's not so great: Audio is marginal
"We purchased the 40” W-series TV last weekend. What a totally awesome picture! No adjustments needed, it was good to go right out of the box. I’ll agree, the built-in speakers have room for improvement so we also added Sony’s HDX-275 Home Theatre sound system. In our smallish family room this combination makes for a truly enjoyable experience. The set-up was pretty easy for both systems. I used HDMI cables from the Comcast box and sound systems to the TV for even better performance.
I’ve always felt Sony makes the best home entertainment electronics on the planet, and these two items continue to support that belief. I highly recommend both these products – you can’t go wrong and you can’t bet the quality and value."

What's great about it: super easy to set up, sleek look, great image.... OMG best picture ever!
"Man, the picture is simply amazing! I luv this t.v. soooo much! haha! for reals! I feel like i'm watching live events on it. I just got the hdmi cable for it, and its crystal clear. It's a overall easy t.v. to program, and I hooked up my stereo system to it and it makes me feel like i'm in the movie theatre! I luv it!"

The KDL 40W4100 has several manufaturer defects

What's great about it: Sound and features
What's not so great: There are several manufactuer defects recognized by Sony
"I bought this HDTV and noticed right away white sparkles on the screen watching various HD programs on standard television and movies. I Googled "white sparkles" only to find numorous postings talking about this same problem. I decided to do an even exchange at Best Buy with the same HDTV only to find the exact same problems on the one I exchanged it for. Sony put a patch download on their website www.sony.com for these problems but the patch didn't eliminate all of the white sparkles and the TV still drops (loses signal\audio) for 4 - 5 seconds periodically. The drop out problem was supposed to be fixed with the patch but it didn't help my HDTV out at all. It still drops. Also, both HDTVs I had didn't sit correctly on the stand they came with. They sat about a half inch to the left or right too much. Very awkward to look at when you are watching a program."

Better than the V4100's

What's great about it: Contrast, 120Hz refresh rate, price
What's not so great: Not the 46"
"Just exchanged my KDL-42V4100 that I had for about a week for this. Mainly for the 120Hz refresh. Motion blur IS noticeably reduced but there IS still some motion blur. It's no Plasma that's for sure. Picture is MUCH better than the V series.
OH! and if you get this home and the picture is dark, and you think the backlight is broken, its not!!! There is a feature that dims the TV when it's dark and brightens it when the lights are on. I brought it back 2 times in one day for this until I figured this out. Don't make my annoying mistake!"

What's great about it: the picture is superior to the v and s series
What's not so great: the sound and remote
"i originally bought the v series sony bravia and took it back. And bought the w series the w series is superior in picture in standard def, blu ray. I would definately recommend this TV. Fast motion scenes and natural color are superior to the the lower tv's SOny has. The cons are the remote and sound but if you have a home theatre to hook it up to you won't have to woory about that."

"This is a great television. I waited for a month for the price to drop below 1500 and it did. Price dropped a few hundred dollars. Quality picture and Sony always go hand and hand.
My PS3 and the blu ray have finally met their match! All we need now,
is for George Lucas to release Star Wars on blu and life is all-grand!"

Fantastic Display

What's great about it: Sharp picture Quality, Great Detail, and better refresh rate
What's not so great: Always wanting another inch bigger no matter what size you go with...
"I first tried out the "V" model, and had my 360 and PS3 hooked up to it immediately. with the blue ray movies and fast action scenes, the "V" model was blotchy and pixelated. i wasn't happy, and took it right back to Best Buy. I upgraded no questions asked to the "W", and took it home to enjoy smooth transitions and a much sharper picture for fast action scenes. Sports is much better on this TV as well. you will not be disappointed with this one.
Just remember though, when you buy your HDMI cables, you have to buy ones that are capable of 120hz refresh rate also. many people don't realize this. it will help!!"

What's great about it: Smooth and intuitive menu system, most features in its price class
"This TV blows me away. I originally bought a Samsung LN-40A630 and was quite impressed by its picture quality for the pricetag, but it lacked a fourth HDMI connection and its audio output isn't variable (which is a problem when my sound system is a Logitech 2.1 system without remote-controllable volume).
I decided to exchange the Samsung for an LG 42LG70, which I didn't even keep for a week. It had better sound and the fourth HDMI than the Samsung lacked, but the black levels were poor.
I took the LG back and exchanged it for the Sony KDL-40W4100 and am completely amazed at what Sony packed into this model for the same price as the previous two models. Intuitive, beautiful menu system, on-screen TV guide, variable sound output, and gorgeous cabinet styling. Crisp, clean blacks and acceptable motion for an LCD screen.
Overall I would most certainly suggest that anyone seriously consider Sony TVs over the competition. I've never been disappointed."

Great product... but a little overrated

What's great about it: I like the features. It is really easy to setup. The display was perfect out of the box. No tweaking was necessary.
What's not so great: the 120Hz display is overrated. Not worth the extra $. If all you watch all day is fast moving sports then buy it.
"I probably could have gotten a television with just the same amount of features and just as nice of a display for $500 less. The 120Hz capability is nice but only pays off when watching sports shows. I purchased a Sharp Aquos 42" last year. The display is just as nice. I could have saved myself a lot of money."

What's not so great: Very Little is not so great, if I could improve anything it would be the sound.
"Simply love this TV. It has an outstanding picture quality, everything is just so clear. I'm a single mother of three and I was able to setup the whole tv with my two daughters! The size is perfect for a normal size living room. Sony is a brand we can trust. There is nothing like watching TV or a movie on such a fine piece of equipment. I highly recommend it."

"This is a very nice system. With the Sony Blue-Ray, the picture is amazing. I am not so crazy about the picture in non-HD channels. I almost prefer a tube television when not watching HD. I researched alot of systems and this is the best one with the 120 hz at a great price. If you are a super tech type of person, you may not be as impressed as I was."

"This TV has an excellent picture quality. Although most of the HD channels are broadcasting on 1080i, it looks real sharp.
The 120 Hz technology is definitely better for your eyes than other 60 Hz TVs.

What's great about it: Stunning picture quality, very attractive design
What's not so great: you cannot tilt the tv on the stand it comes with
"I have been wanting this TV for a while now. My friend bought a 52" w3000 last year and I couldn't wait to get my hands, or eyes, on one. Then the 4100 came out with an even stronger processor so I'm glad I waited. This is the first HDTV I have owned, but I have seen many at friends' houses, my work, etc., and this TV set owns. I don't have cable or satellite so all I get is the local stuff...just watched the patriots vs. jets on cbs and the picture was AMAZING. I didn't do anything to the settings and it is truly superb. Even better than that though is the quality you get with a blu-ray player hooked up. I've got the Sony s350 hooked up via a 4' rocket fish hdmi cable and it is a sight to behold. Watching a movie in 1080 p is unreal. Sony kicks all the other brands' butts in my opinion and I give them an A+ for this particular TV. Don't settle for anything less!"

"The Sony KDL-40W4100 40" BRAVIA 1080p is an amazing piece of technology. Contrast ratio of 30,000:1 renders dark scenes very well and the 120Hz refresh rate renders motion scenes without blur. Colors are very well rendered and rich. Coupled with a 1080p Blu Ray player this is a TV sure to please the eyes. Recommend getting a Blu Ray copy of BBC's Planet Earth to demonstrate the capabilities of this TV."

"I've had my 40W4100 for 2 weeks now. I researched, researched and researched until I was worn out. I had narrowed my selections down to this or Samsung. I didn't like the TOC or gloss screen of the Samsung (my den has alot of glare during the day) so I decided on the Sony. And boy am I glad I did! This TV just blows me away! I have everything connected HDMI (DirecTV HD HR21, PS3 and Onkyo 606 receiver). If anyone is on the fence about this TV climb on over and get one!! The sparkle "issue" some people are complaining about is a non-issue for me. I see absolutely nothing on regular or HD programming, or BR. On the PS3 menu, if I freeze the screen and stand right up to the TV, I can periodically see a tiny, tiny white speck, way less than the size of a pin head, if I STARE at the screen. It is barely noticeable and isn't consistent. If this is what people are saying is "sparkles" then it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. I'm not ever going to be standing that close to the TV so it's not going to be noticeable. Please don't let the "sparkle" issue be a deciding factor in not purchasing this TV. You will NOT be disappointed. You would not believe the WOW factor from my friends when they see it for the first time, and I find myself never wanting to go to bed at night anymore. HAHA....Nothing, and I mean nothing, is ever perfect! I can assure you the Samsung's aren't perfect, either. So from a true 40W4100 owner, BUY THIS TV, you will not regret it!!!!"
