I'll admit that i'm a NASCAR fan and that I may think this game is better than those who are not NASCAR fans. However, this is a great racing game that any racing fan should enjoy. All the features are either perfect or near perfect. The career mode is time consuming, fun, and as difficult as you want. For one thing, you can make the races as long as you want them, which can vary from 5% to 100%. So, its either short or long or somewhere between, depending on your tastes.
All things considered, this game is a steal at $20.
One small note, this game was made last year, so some of the drivers are now with other teams, like Mark Martin.
What's great about it: very good visuals and lotsa fun

The game is a lot of fun to play and is a steal at $20 right now. I picked it up about a month ago and have played it for about 12 to 15 hours and it has been a lot of fun. Customizing your own car and racing for yourself is fun and the controls are very customizable for various driving styles.
The graphics and surround sound are very good in this game and the challenges during career mode are a lot of fun and not so challenging that you get frustrated. The new pop up display that gives you information during a race for tire wear and car wear is pretty cool and can help when running long races.
If you are a die hard Nascar or Truck Series fan as some of the other reviewers then you may be disappointed. If you just want to race Nascar Cup series and aren't very hung up on the exact association with the drivers and car manufacturers then this is a fun game to pop in and race around the tracks across the country and complete some fun challenges.
What's great about it: Graphics, Sound, Controls, Fun Factor
What's not so great: Not 100% authentic, missing some drivers, no dealer specific cars

NASCAR 09 might be the worst NASCAR game ever made by EA Sports. This game has so few real drivers to choose from in the Nationwide Series and only 4 real drivers in the Craftsman Truck Series. The 2007 Craftsman Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday is nowhere to be found in the game. Niether is the Craftsman Truck runner-up in 2007 Mike Skinner. The 2008 Craftsman Truck Champion Johnny Benson isn't in the game either. As for the Nationwide Series the 2007 champion Carl Edwards is in the game but none of the Joe Gibbs cars are in the Nationwide Series and they dominated the 2008 Nationwide season. Even worse not one car in the whole game is classified by manufacturer. There is no Toyota , no Chevy , no Dodge and no Ford just generic race cars. The Sprint Cup series has almost no alternative paint schemes to choose from. Guys like Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart have just one paint scheme each to choose from. The career mode has gotten much more shallow than previous NASCAR titles. In this game there is no way you can own your own team in career mode. You have to compete for contracts but if you qualify for Natiowide or Sprint Cup contracts you can't go back to the Craftsman Truck series in career mode. And to keep your contract you have to complete certain objectives during your career but some are impossible. I ended up getting fired because I had to finish ahead of two of my teammates but I only had one teammate. I really hope EA Sports gets it right in time for the release of NASCAR 10 because this game is not what I expected.
What's great about it: better graphics than NASCAR 08
What's not so great: barely any real Nationwide or Truck drivers
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

the black flags are handed out like free candy
i spun out and got black flaged for rough driving like 10 times
after about there laps your tires already have a good amount of wear.

there is a sweet chase for the cup mode
then if you hit the b button you bring up this amazeing display witch realy helps with tracking tire wear, gas level , aero dynamics, and the engin heat

I want a video of a banquet or at least holding up the championship trophy after I spend so much time to win the cup! That being said, that is the only thing I don't love about this years game so far. I'm a former NASCAR pit crew member as well as a race car driver, and I've even tested Cup cars on Kansas, Talladega, Richmond and Darlington, and I can tell you that this game plays remarkably like the real cars drive. The clutch effect could use some help so that it doesn't drop at 6000 rpm, but everything else feels dead on.
The adjustments are phenomanal (an improvement started last year) so that what works on the real cars works on the game, and that it is so intricately adjustable to get the car just right in all of the segments of the turn (in, middle, steady state, on the throttle, off, and forward bite). The only place where they will have to get better in the future is with the new bump stop setups.
The competition has stepped up quite well and on hard mode run lap times close to what the cup guys are turning this year. The tire wear effects are great and if you are going to run some longer races, you are going to have to do long-run testing so that you don"t wear your tires out in 15 laps.
The driver challenges are fun to earn the rep and performance points,and if you want that ride with Hendrick, you are going to have to put in some time because they won"t hire you untill you've got a couple of seasons under your belt (unfortunately it probably won't matter because you will already have maxed out your car before then.)
Now that the vehicle characteristics are so good, I expect EA to spend some time working on improving the feel of the career mode to make it a more in-depth experience as well as fine-tuning the AI of other drivers. Maybe a manager or an agent/sponsor finder would be a good addition to make it a true story mode. I think it would be great to have your mamager say that if you finish in the top 5 in a particular race that you will get a meeting with Joe Gibbs, who then gives you a list of improvements you need to sign with him next year as well as sponsor requirements that you have to go out and earn. Just a thought.
My advice is to go get this game, go get a stearing wheel, and go have some fun! It is by far the closest thing to getting behind the wheel I've seen yet, and it's WAAAAAYYY cheaper than even 1 race's worth of lugnuts!
What's great about it: Hands down the most realistic racing sim I've ever played
What's not so great: lack of rewards for a season

To me the game has the best racing from any nascar game, I love the fact you can set the car up any way you want. I my self play on expert with no assists what so ever. I also Love the Car customization it is so in detail and you can go on the internet and put the Car Logos on and make it a Ford, Chevy, Dodge Or Toyota and make them look real If you good with Photo Shop I have about 60 customized cars, and the sound is great
What's great about it: The Racing Is Awsome
What's not so great: NO Manufactures and Multiplayer

In my cons i listed that there is no way to make your own team, i refer to nascar 05-06, you could earn money and purchase your own team and hire drivers as such.
Second i listed no team control, tyhere is almost no way to tell who your team mates are(unless you are on hendrick, RCR ect.)
Then lastly they only have Craftsman trucks, Nationwide sewreis, and Sprint cup series. In all the other nascar games, they had the featherlight series, i felt this was ane of the funnest series to race in.

The last thing is that it takes only l;ike 2 days to get up to the sprint cup series, in other NASCAR games you had to race multiple seasons to go to the next series, and one more thing i miss is rivalries, and allies, and like in nascar 06 u could do so much more when it comes to choosing what ur driver looked like.
Over all this is a REALLY GOOD GAME. I would recomend it to any race fan.
What's great about it: There are alot of different sponsors and contracts to choose from
What's not so great: you cant make you own team, no team control, only three series.

I've been playing '09 for awhile and have experienced numerous games glitchs. However, there have been several updates/patches that are slowing improving the game play. There are more customization options for 09 and you can race the CoT in the Sprint Cup. Graphics are good, but the engine sound is just off. It doesn't come close to a real race car engine sound. Overall 09 is a good game, but you absolutely need a racing wheel to play and enjoy the game.
What's great about it: CoT available
What's not so great: Game play glitches, engine sound is off

The gameplay is great! However, after a certain number of laps you will get a profile freeze. The only way to fix it is delete your profile which means you lose all of your accomplishments from Nascar 09 and start from the beginning again! This is a pain when you have to repeat the entire game to get back to where you were.
Also, you will get freezes before or after some of the challenges in which case you have to restart your 360.
EA has put out two patches but I still have freezes going on.
At this point buy this game at your own risk unless you just want it for some fun racing every now and then and don't care about career mode.

i was excited to get this game after the mess that was nascar 08. game play is good. but if you don't have a decent setup than online play is a waste of time. after having this game for only a month it kept freezing up, and after talking to EA about this, they know there's a problem, "but if you hang in there they MIGHT be a patch some time down the road." that's what i was told anyways. had to take it up a notch to pressure them to send me a new version. still waiting for it, but if you do buy this game keep your receipt and be prepared to spend time with EA on hold.
What's great about it: great graphics, fun if your a mechanical engineer
What's not so great: besides being made by EA? car setups can be a pain. game freezing up

The critic underneath of me truly does not know what they are talking about. Yes, Jeff Gordon is on the original cover, but who wants Jeff Gordon? It is only right that Elliot Sadler get the cover. In 2007 he got jipped. Right before the came got released, he had switched teams. But overall I think that this is a well made game, and i would like to see the price of the XBOX360 Driving Wheel to decrease. The wheel makes the gaming experience much more intense.
What's great about it: great graphics
What's not so great: One Player!

I love nascar and Jeff Gordon, (come on Best Buy no one wants the Elliott Sadler cover, but I know he is your guy). I have not played a nascar game since the 05 or 06 version on PS2 which was very boring cause you had to start out in the Arca series which took forever to move up the ranks. This game is pretty cool. I love the idea of getting to design your own paint schemes for your car and truck. I like the arcade style driving because you are not on the edge of your seat trying not to spin out like in past titles but if this is what you prefer you can set it for that. I might do that soon cause I have been winning alot. I like the idea of the getting black flaged and damaging the car because you can not just muscle your way to the front and have to use some type of skill. I have not played the multiplayer but I think that will be pretty cool when I do. Check this game out if you like Nascar or racng games.
What's great about it: Jeff Gordon as your guide. Go Jeff Go.
What's not so great: No two player on same system

I am a huge Dale Jr/NASCAR fan..been to Daytona, Charlotte, Pocono multiple times and was so pumped for this updated of the game...The only and biggest complaint I have is that it is a ONE PLAYER game unless you go online! Who wants to play it on a computer screen and not all of us have a hookup to a large screen TV...I got it for my Dad for Father's Day for us to play together like we do with all the many other racing games we have and when we started it up...wham...it is one player only game??? Huh?? Yes, I know.. it is my fault for making an assumption...that this racing game would be the same as other racing games where you race AGAINST other people!! Like in real NASCAR!! I will eat the cost and am on my way out the door to purchase the multi player PS2 version of NASCAR 09...but buyer beware...oh and GO DALE JR!!

Let me start my review by saying this: I owned by the Nascar 08 game and Nascar 09. Im a semi interested Nascar fan. I like to attend a race per year near my home but don't really follow truly through the year and think it's boring on TV. With that said, I think it's a fun sport to play in a game if the game is done well.
Last year's version was just horrible. I was excited and then let down heavily. The game was flawed from one end to the other. For starters, in games I play I like some sort of realism. However, that realism has to fit within the premise of the game.
Last year's issues: 1) The cars be default pulled left heavily. Yes, believe it or not, Nascar cars do this to an extent (now do you respect those drivers?). This allows for better handling in corners and turns. However, though I like realism, in a game it makes it highly difficult to compete. This year's game has removed this problem.
*Let me jump in to state that if you are playing this game (even 09) without a steering wheel, you are missing out and will never fully enjoy this game.
2) Crashes. Last year, the simplest bump would cause a catostrophic crash with cars flipping. I think rarely was there ever a crash without flipping. This year's game creates much more realistic crashes with simple spins and you can even avoid the walls with skilled driving.
3) Frame Rate: Last year's game wasn't fully smooth in operation. This year's seems to perform flawlessly (at least from what I see).
This year's game also has a truly deep Career mode where you actually start out in the truck series. You really have to work your way up the ladder.
The paint booth for your car and truck is much better than last year's.
3) THE PITS: Last year's pit situation was just abismal. Basically when cars would go to pit, they would stack up on the track nearly a quarter mile back as everyone slowed to enter the pits. Also nearly every car in last year's version pitted on the same lap. It was so mechanised and boring and basically caused crashes. If you were coming around a corner and the other cars were pitting, they took up the whole track and you had nowhere to go. This year this is changed. Just like in real life, the cars pit on different laps based on their setups and needs. Also the cars pull to the inside when coming off of the track and I've yet to see any buildup. Also your spotter tells you well in advance that a car is coming off or on the track and you have plenty of information to be aware of.
4) BLACK FLAGS: Last year, if you did nearly ANYTHING you were blacked flagged, even if you didn't do ANYTHING AT ALL. This year, you will be warned in advance and given plenty of chances and THEN black flagged. Also you will be given 3 laps to pit and a flag on the screen keeps you updated with that.
The pitting option box is pretty much the same from last year.
My only complaint thus far is: I hate road courses and though I have to admit I've not gone far enough in to see if there's an option it's not realily obvious. I want an option even in career mode to get rid of the road courses. I like turning left!
The greatest thing this year is control and realism. the control of your car is so much better and you really can compete. Last year I NEVER completed a race without a crash. I'm happy to say last night I ran a competitive race at Daytona with NO CAUTIONS.
This brings me to another issue: Last year you could time the cautions to a lap or two. It was so mechanized you KNEW a caution was coming. Not this year! Be ready because you can go an entire race with no cautions so finally finally finally strategy is a factor in this game.
Do you take two tires? 2 cans of gas or 1?
I am PLEASANTLY surprised by this game and FINALLY have a NASCAR GAME that I will enjoy until next year's edition.
Some will try to pick this game apart but keep in mind, some people are playing a game as reviewers to pick it apart. Most of the things you'd never even notice. I review as a gamer, period. This game is impressive and I was NOT expecting it to be that way.
The game is very very nice!

What's not so great: Just tiny little things, but nothing to write about really
