What's great about it: With a 9 cell lithium primary battery this laptop will last nearly 5 hours on high performance mode on a full charge.
What's not so great: The rubberized coating on lid is very easily damaged ( it will flake)

"If you can get this product as configured for under nine hundred dollars, "Buy it and Buy it now". I bought this product with nearly the same configuration last year from Dell for around $1300.00 not including service agreement. My Configuration was; 1.5 gigahrtz dual core processor, 250gb hard drive, and 2gb of DDR2 Ram and an upgraded 9 cell primary battery. Since I bought the laptop, I increased the RAM to 4gb, but 3gb is probably just as fast especially with the 2 gigahertz processor included in Best Buy's configuration.

After a few months the newness of the purchase wore off and I thought that this was just your average laptop but I was wrong. It is light, portable, typing is crisp and snappy, the silver verses a black keyboard is excellent in low light situations. The loading reponse of the 250 gigs of hard drive storage space is plenty and loads quickly. I run Vista Home Premium, itunes, MS office 2007 pro and office 2003, and being a college IT student use alot of learning software, yet I have only used 103gigs of hard drive space.

As I said before this laptop is not typical. Being an IT student,
most of my fellow students have laptops and among them except for the Apple enthuiests, are in awe with the performance and user friendlyness of this laptop. I also guided my mother to buy a product with slightly better hardware specs from another company however, her laptop works well but for some reason does not get nearly the same performance or is as user friendly and rugged as this product.

The only negative I found with this laptop is the clear rubberized coating over the lid of the beutiful almost candy midnight blue color of the plastic beneath. A day after I purchased this laptop some flakes ot the coating came off the lid edges and top which cannot be notice from far away. One the third day of ownership I contacted DElLL about the coating and they offered to replace the lid if I mail the laptop in, but I could not bare to part with it. A little over a year later, the coating is still ninty percent intact so it is not as big of a deal now. Anyway, wether you buy a plain black lid or any of the color choices this computer is a steal for under $900.00 so "Buy it and Buy it now""

What's great about it: Very easy to navigate, great value for the price.

"I got this computer as a replacement for a Compaq I had-I was a bit hesitant about getting a Dell as I was used to other brands. With that being said, I now would probably only buy another Dell laptop. It's very easy to navigate and I literally plugged it in and was ready to go. For the price it can't be beat and if you're using your laptop a lot this is perfect to just sit on your lap. It's small, yet sturdy. Although it doesn't have a widescreen which I was used to, I immediately got used to this one. I don't miss my old computer at all. A great product and value, I highly reccomend it."

What's great about it: Multi tasking No problem
What's not so great: Only 2 Usb Ports

"I purchased this Dell in hopes that it would take me away from my old HP. No bad marks about HP but this Dell definetly takes the Gold. Long story short it will do a lot and can hold a lot of files without hindering performance. Nickname for this computer should be " The HULK drives a mini Cooper."

What's great about it: Easy to set up, amazing price

"I purchased this laptop after my Toshiba died. I did a ton of research and finally decided on this one and have not regretted my decision once. I took it out of the box and had it up and running in minutes. It's easy to use and very fast! I'm a very impatient person when it comes to computers and screen reloads so that was a big concern for me. My son also plays a ton of games on it and it is definitely everything that we hoped it would be. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking to purchase one!"

What's great about it: This laptop was very fairly priced and I got my money's worth
What's not so great: It is a little bit bulky, but not absurd.

"I have had 3 laptops; Dell (the one im reviewing), Gateway, and a Sony. This laptop is superior to both of those. The sony was nice and small but didnt have the processing power, the Gateway was fast but bulky and uncomfortable, but this one was just right. It was the right size and still had all the features I needed. I don't use it for heavy gaming or anything, just surfing the internet, chatting, watching videos, and doing papers. If you need a computer for those things i would highly recomend this."

What's great about it: Great setup
What's not so great: battery life

"The setup was super easy; it only took me no more than 2 min to setup everything, and i really like that. The only downfall about this is the battery gets drained kinda fast. Besides that this was a really good investment. Anybody should get this."

What's great about it: Windows Vista is really good and the performance is good as well
What's not so great: it dosent have a tuner for windows media center and the LCD Display is not good in bright rooms

"As my first laptop its very good, its light weight and the LCD display is really clear and bright but if its in a highly lighten area the LCD gets very dark even with the brightest setting.
But I still recomend this to anyone and anything as there first laptop for just school or a small office. (I picked it over a MAC) The Web Cam is also a really good add on to the inspiron its really clear and good for staying in touch with friends over seas!!"

What's great about it: Small Size. Power for money, Features
What's not so great: Thickness, low-ish vista experience rating

"I am writing this review from a Dell Inspiron 1420, now just called 14, right now. Mine is almost like this, just with a few differences. Mine has a dedicated 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS, only dual 1.8GHz processors, 2GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard disk drive. The cons for me are that at its thickest point, this laptop is 1.5"! It's only a 14" screen but is that thick!. As for weight it's about 5.5 pounds and not too bad. My windows vista experience rating for the hardware shown above is 3.7, and i imagine yours would be about the same with the slightly faster processors and one more GB of RAM, even with the omission of the graphics card. Windows Vista experience rating is out of 5.9 points, 5.9 being the best of course, so a 3.7 is just okay. now i'll talk about pro's.
Its a small size, length and width wise, even if it is a bit deep for the other dimensions. Its got a built-in web cam, i think this one does, and microphone, that are very convenient for video chats. the screen is good quality and can play 720p video at regular resolution. It is silver on the inside and looks very sleek and stylish. There are quick-access media buttons above the keyboard, for volume and media controls and such, that have blue backlights. The touch pad is pretty good, though kind of small i guess. You can format its speed, touch to click, and scrolling features. The keyboard is a decent size; i like it. The midnight blue back is really cool, i think. What i really like about it is that it isn't a metal or aluminum material, but a soft kind of plastic that is nice to touch. The disk drive is very good and has supported all of the different blank discs i've put in it. There are four USB 2.0 ports, great for a laptop. However, the expresscard slpt is located over two of them, and if a card that bulged out at the end was entered then you'd cover up those two USB ports. The wireless g works great, and there is an ethernet port too if you have a wired network instead of wireless. My wireless card supports n, but we don't have an n router, so i use the g signal.
Overall this is a very good laptop for simple uses. Write docs and email, play dvds and videos, have video chats, store music and pictures, etc. It starts and shuts down quickly enough, and can support lots of things open at once. Battery life is a bit low, about 1 hour on high performance, up 3 to say 2.5 hours on power saver, doing basic things and with bluetooth and maybe wireless turned off.
I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a simple laptop like this, and its a dell do you can count on great customer support! I have been very pleased with it myself."

What's great about it: good volume, battery life
What's not so great: screen lag, freezing

"The only problem with this laptop is when I turn it on it often shows nothing on the screen, just black. If I close it for a few minutes it works, but it is very annoying."

"This is my first lap top purchase and is gift for my son. All research , i.e., consumer reports, etc., indicated this model to be highly rated. After more than a month's useage, it has exceeded our expectations in quality and capability. The keyboard is easy to navigate and the screen is distinct and clear. I may just buy one for myself!"

What's great about it: Convenient and fast
What's not so great: flimsy dvd drive

"This is my first laptop purchase. I researched many brands before purchasing a Dell. It is convenient and fast. It performs very well. I also like the Best Buy geek squad. This computer should serve anybody's needs.
I bought the flamingo pink and liked having a color choice.
The only con is the dvd drive is flimsy."

What's great about it: Pefect size, not too heavy, great looking screen

"I am using this notebook it as a second computer for business travel overseas. Nice looking case. Metallic looking surface does not show fingerprints like on other notebooks and does not look cheap. Vista works great with all the other software I am using. No issues or problems whatsoever. Best Buy updated the BIOS, great service ! Got it on sale, better price than buying from Dell."

What's great about it: Great screan display, Lots of USB ports, easy to use
What's not so great: Hard to find on line owners manual help, a printed version would have been nice

"Had always been a Gateway fan, this is my first Dell and I love it !!! The systom works great. The screan is exceptional. I have a lot of photo and art programs installed and the prosser handles them with ease, no freeze ups like with my old laptop."

What's great about it: Small and Lightweight, great performance, good screen, 802.11 N

"I got this laptop for my wife to use for school and she loves it.

The only thing we had an issue with initially is the screen brightness, but after I searched online for the issue we found out that the screen comes dimmed from the factory, so you have to change the setting in the BIOS. It is really easy, and after I made it full brightness in the BIOS, you can make it less dim using the keyboard later on.

Overall this is a great buy for something nice and portable."

What's great about it: fast, mobile, screen
What's not so great: no bluetooth, no wireless n version

"Excellent size, power, and screen at a price of $799. 14" is perfect for surfing on the couch while watching TV. Fast with batt life expected from a 6 cell battery: 2 hrs. The only downside is no bluetooth, no n wireless. Also, for a brighter screen on battery power you must go into the bios and raise highest setting....boot while holding F2 to change bios brightness setting."
