What's not so great: It's dead, the remote is hard to use, and it's DEAD
"So it worked just fine for a few months, even dealt with the horrible remote that is hard to use. One day it just wouldn't boot up. I unplugged it - waited, plugged it back in and tried it again. Nothing, just makes a noise like it's trying.
Worst purchase and the price on this thing just keeps going up. I guess I wont be using my TV to watch TV, Ill use my netflix, hulu, and wii on it. Too bad - really wanted at least the local channels."

What's great about it: Nothing
"By far the worst channel selectivity of all the converters out there. Constantly drops channels, even in strong signal areas. The remote control is also very cheap, the battery door barely holds on. The remote also has a very slow response time, and the box is totally useless without having the remote. Obvioulsy it was created to frustrate the consumer to the point of them wanting to buy a new TV. (I would recommend this item to an enemy however)"

What's great about it: It worked! Picture quality was great even though I'm in a bad signal quality area.
What's not so great: The auto-scan missed some channels so I added them manually.
"The setup was easy and didn't take long at all. Although it missed a few channels during the auto-scan process, I was able to add them manually quite easily. I suggest you look up on the internet which channels you should receive and then add any that the auto-scan doesn't add for you. The quality of the signal was great too. They should have switched everyone over to this years ago. Better than basic cable, that's for sure."

"I bought one of these and took it back after trying it and comparing it to an insignia converter that I already had and the insignia pulled in at least 5 more tv stations. Over all it looked kinda lacking in quality compared to the insignia and the progarm guide absoulutly sucked!!!"

Remote Control is a Pain!

What's great about it: Easy to setup
What's not so great: Remote control is difficult to work with
"The converter box works fine, but the remote control is aggravating. The small piece on the back of the remote control that is supposed to hold the batteries in place does not work properly, therefore I have to push hard on this piece to get the channels to change. Even with me pressing up on this piece it takes several tries to get the channel to change. I would not buy another one of these."

What's not so great: Junk; died within 6 months, other problems
"I bought two Apex DT250A units with coupons. One has died in less than 6 months. The other one constantly "forgets" channels and needs to be rescanned on an almost daily basis. Scanning channels takes about 10 minutes.
Both had other problems too. The remote is very flaky, and will sometimes jump over many channels while switching from one to another. Range and angle are poor too with the remote, even with fresh batteries.
Picture is often distorted or pixilated on channels that do not come in with 100 percent strength."

Very Poor Quality

What's not so great: Stops working in a very short time.
"I put this converter box on a TV that is seldom used. It stopped working after several months. I don't think it was actually used with the TV more than 10 times. Now the red power light just flickers and the TV gets no signal. I tried unplugging the unit to see if it would reset. Tried it on different TVs, etc.. The box is bad. It is out of the 90 day warranty (parts & labor) and within the 1 yr. warranty (parts only). When I called customer support they said I could send it to them with a $10 fee and they would fix or replace it. So I would have to pay about $20 with shipping and the fee to get another piece of junk from them. I checked BestBuy this week and they don't have this box in the store but they do have another APEX box there. I am very disappointed that they still carry this junk. I bought 2 of the Insignia brand boxes from them that work fine. Unfortunately, they don't have them anymore."

"Don't buy this item, just like the other reviews my unit died too for no apparent reason. Was in use on Sunday afternoon, turned the TV off, went to the turn on the TV in the evening the coverter box would not work. The red light which is usually green when it is turned on would work. Checked power to it, unplugged it, checked connections, unplugged it over night and tried it again this morning. Nothing, won't turn on. Read other reviews, lots of similar problems. Now I have to buy a new converter. These boxes should not cost $55.00 dollars!! Heck new DVD players cost only $25.00 dollars! Ridiculous"

Avoid the Apex Converter

What's great about it: Full programming guide from over the digital signal including program descriptions
What's not so great: Dies after a year of operation
"Bought two of these with the DTV coupon, spread over the 90 day window, in order to make sure that we were happy with the product before we bought the second box.
Setup was easy and straightforward. We liked the programming guide and haven't seen it on the other boxes we have since looked at in our price range.
Minor complaint was that the signal from the remote for the volume was very close to the signal used by the TV so they would interfere with one another.
Our biggest complaint and the reason that I will now avoid all products from Apex, is that both boxes have died. They just stopped working each in the order that we purchased it. One day they are working just fine the next day nothing. The power light on the front of the box which normally glows green when powered on, is stuck displaying red, which simply means the devise is plugged in.
Trouble shooting guide in the manual is of no assistance. Plugging and unplugging the devise, changing batteries in the remote, letting the devise sit unplugged for a few days, does nothing.
If you are still in the market for DTV converter box keep looking, or buy this box with the understanding that it will die just after it first anniversary (and just after its warranty expires)."

"As another poster said, they take forever to scan, don't hold channels, volume will go up (or down) opposite of what you choose. Worst of all, my fourth (4th) Apex just quit, not even 9 mo's old. In the past 9 mo's, I purchased four Apex and two Insignias (a Best Buy brand). The Insignias have worked great, no problems at all except perhaps could be better in poor antennae reception areas of the house. The Apex's, ALL four of them, have now quit working completely, can't even turn the last one on. What a piece of garbage."

What's not so great: it goes in and out, scan some of the channels, now it does not work at all
"Now after 3 months it does not work at , I did use this garbage once in a while at my study room. It does not scan all the channels, it goes in and out. After a while I bought another one Magnavox and use that every day at my day to day viewing in the family room where we all watch every day. Today I turn on my tv and the converter does not work at all, I called the support people and put me through all bad, they told me to try this and that spent about an hour and half then told me to call back with the receipt for warranty repair."
