Upgraded existing G network to N. Overall, upgrade went very smooth with no real issues. Only delays were adding my wireless G ethernet bridge back onto the network and an older laptop with XP Prof w/ SP3. (Security issues w/ SP3)
Pros-
Gigabit ports
Relatively easy set-up
Dual Networks - G and N
Cons-
Unit runs hot- so I put a stand-off underneath to make sure it has cool air flow.
What's great about it: Speed and dual broadcast of G and N Signals Simultaneously
What's not so great: A little tricky setting up each individual Security level to match different products security settings (WPA vs WPA2)

I've had this router for a little over a year, and it's a paper weight now. I originally bought this WRT54G died after 6 reliable years of use. I bought the WRT610N because of the dual band capability, I had on wireless-N on my new MacBook, and because of my previous great experience with Linksys. I ignored the spotty reviews about the poor quality, and the numerous problem with the dropping the broadcast signal. Well, today I am here to tell you I experienced the same thing. My wireless-N is dead, and I can't sign into the router set up to try and trouble shoot it. When I called tech support they offered to charge me to trouble shoot it over the phone. I understand there is a warranty, and they have to follow it, but the router should have lasted a lot longer than 13 months. I can tell you I will likely never buy a Linksys product again.
What's great about it: Simultaneous dual band broadcast
What's not so great: short life
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I didn't buy it at Best Buy but I have to post a review for people who want to buy the best modem for their time and money. A wireless modem is one of the most important factors to increase the max speed and easy connectivity for for ur computer. even if u have high-speed internet u must have an excellent router to help achieve max usage of ur internet service.
Whats great about this router for me? first off I have two laptops, two itouches, an Xbox 360 console with a wireless N adapter, and a wireless printer. before I bought the WRT610N I had the WRT160N. its a good router do get me wrong but its not strong enough to manage all of my devices. whenever Im playing xbox and browsing the internet at the same time connection is good. When I shut down the xbox, my laptop either loses signal or connection is limited. sometimes my itouch would lose connection too when I connect to a public network and I have to enter the passphrase. When I installed the WRT610N my problems were solved. so far I haven't lost connection or only have limited access. my itouch hasn't drop the connection either. also sometimes my xbox network would lose connection and had to reconfigure the network settings on the xbox to regain connection. I play alot of Team Fortress 2 and since getting the WRT610N I haven't experienced constant freezing or lose host connection.
if so perfect why did I gave it 4 stars for installation?
one reason. the instructions were not cleared and im a tech-savvy guy but it was like reading it in a different language. here's my problem I tried installing it as the directions clearly read install DVD before connecting hardware. I did that and nothing happen. after 10 minutes and re-reading the instructions I noticed something. In fairly started size print was the phone # for tech support. OK I called them up and receive a tech support lady most likely from India(BIG SURPRISE THERE) here's the catch, there was a $9.99 charge for them to control the computer and have them installed and configure the settings for you. most of you thinking man thats cheaper then what microsoft charges for tech support LOL. yes it is some are thinking thats outrageous I paid $200 for this (BTW I don't shop retail and I always work for the best deals) and they want ten bucks for tech support not gonna happen. Here's wat I did I paid the ten dollars(also they said if they couldn't installment correctly u would be refunded, they hold the charge first then if successful the charge goes through if not your not charge for this at all) I had the tech woman control my computer and within I think tens minutes the router was up and running and I am completely satisfied with her service. Im glad I called for support b/c if I didn't I would still be stuck with the WRT160N with the lost connections.
Summary: I have to say overall im very satisfied. The only thing is they want you to call tech support and pay for the extra services. otherwise I could've done it myself. if u get this router or any other router from Linksys you demand the best and you will. But somethings the best things cost a little more to have.
What's great about it: Faster connection speed, no more drop connections
What's not so great: having to pay for linksys support to install it but worth it

If a person reads and follows the directions, a successful set up is almost certain. I had been using the WRT54G and wanted to upgrade because the router is in the basement and I have a wireless PC on the 2nd floor with a frequently weak connection. I uninstalled the WRT54G, shut down the Modem and all PCs. Rebooted the Modem, RAN the software for WRT610N on one PC & followed the instructions. Installed the Network Magic software, which gives a excellent visual picture of your network, identifies problems and how to fix them. I have 4 wired devices and 5 wireless. Network Magic it great because you can see the status of all your devices (PCs, Printers, Games, etc) and all info on them at a glance. My connections and speed are now much improved!!
What's great about it: This Router was very easy to set up, upload/download speed improved
What's not so great: Nothing, Very Pleased over all

This is a great Linksys router. It has two band widths. The performance is great. It doesn't overload like my old router used to. The speed is just great. Setting it up was so easy; it took less than 5 minutes. I like the Network Magic program that is with it. This is definately a top-of-the-line router.
What's great about it: The performance and wireless range
What's not so great: Nothing so far

I bought this Router to replace my reliable D-Link DI-524. After years of troublefree service, there turned out to be two fatal flaws, one with iPhones dropping connections and one with not being able to run 4 wired connections simultaneously. I tried the newer DIR-825, but it broke my SIP Phone and still had issues with my iPhone. After searching for many days, I came accross this sleek looking router and decided to give Linksys another shot after a bad experience in 2002. What a pleasant surprise. I unboxed it, connected my internet connection and did a basic configuration. The SIP Phone work again immediately and the iPhone connected immediately and still has never dropped its connection.
What's great about it: Easy to Setup, and Works with My SIP Phone out of the box!

Years ago, my first experience with a wirless router was a NetGear unit which died within 2 years. I replaced it with a Linksys based upon a professionals advice and experienced a great improvement over the NetGear unit. After owning a Linksys WRT54GS which I considered very reliable with great customer service, I recently decided to upgrade to enable family to see my kids via Skype as well as improving gaming speed and range throughout the house. We have several older PC's running XP and a new laptop with Windows 7 as well as several Iphones. In addition, I wanted to add VoIP. The old router was still working fine after 6+ years and minimal problems so despite the mixed reviews on the BB and other websites, I chose to ignore the poor reviews and focus on the good ones.
I purchased the 610 because of the dual band mode operating at the same time because of all the users on my home network. I also wanted the 1000Mps connection capability. Other routers may have had dual band capability but few were simultaneously dual band that automatically selected.
Setup was a mixed bag depending upon the hardware, the Win 7 computer was easy bc of the ability to transfer the info via USB flashdrive. Despite the flashdrive transfer option, the XP PC's with older wireless linksys adapters required manual setup which was not intuitive even when accustomed to the old WRT54GS install and setup software which is predominantly manual. Over the years of moving and adding additional hardware, I got pretty familiar with the old setup software and securing a network - not necessarily a power user. Stupid things like not using the same nomenclature in the labelling or setup software as that which would be on the PC's, Password does not necessarily mean password it may be something else...
The range of this router was no different than the G router with antennas even though the new N routers are supposedly better. Maybe they are considering it better bc it does not have antennas vs the one that does... LOL
Speed is marginally better, but in my opinion not worth the pricetag especially based upon the other problems or difficulties that either are worse or show no improvements over the old router. Please bear in mind that although I tested Skype and had marginal improvement in video streaming, I have yet to contact Linksys cusomer support to ensure my setup is optimized. Barring any significant improvements in video streaming and speed, my opinion will stand - NOT WORTH IT.
Reliability - after setting most of the PC's last night, I started surfing and noticed signal and connection drops and auto reconnects several times. I unplugged the router and it seemed to be better but this happened again.
Because of my success with the older Linksys router, I was hesitant to use anything but Linksys again. Unless something changes when I call Customer Support today, this sucker is going back to Best Buy and I will probably not be purchasing another Linksys to replace this one - certainly not another 610.
Here's the kicker - Linksys has what appears to be a nice add-on software called NetMagic which is used to customize the monitoring of your network. I did not play with the settings or investigate this software very much because I just wanted to get the network up first. I could be wrong, but it looks as though NetMagic is not included in the router purchase permanently - it's just a 90 day trial and you'll have to purchase a membership. That is ridiculous when you consider the cost of the router itself. Again, I did not spend too much time on this, but the features I saw should simply be included with the router. If this is truly the case - Shame on Linksys!
What's great about it: Specifications Great On Paper ?!@($*$^%^
What's not so great: Range, Setup, Speed, Reliability... Not Enough Improvement to Justify Cost!

I got the first one hooked up Thanksgiving week. Early January it stopped sending ANY signal. I used to have access via my I-pod Touch, LG Blu-Ray player and my laptop. Now only the desktop (hardwired) is getting access to the Web.
I had to pay almost $100 today to have it reconnected. It worked for 3 hours and now NOTHING will recognize it again!!!!!! I had NOTHING but problems with Linksys' combo router/modem and this stinks even worse. Is there ANYTHING out there that works for more than a month?
What's great about it: Not the most expensive.
What's not so great: First one packed up in 4 weeks. This one is dying.

I bought this router yesterday and have returned it today. I bought this router to update my wireless network mainly to so I could stream videos through my xbox 360. I had a Linksys WRT54GS that worked just fine for my DVR and blue ray and a laptop. My xbox 360 did ok on this router but I wanted to upgrade to get better picture quality and not have some many breaks in the movie. I bought this router thinking this would be solved. First thing I encountered was that I could not get my Tivo to to hook up with this router. I tried everything I knew of but it kept saying no wireless network detected when the router was across the room from it. I redid my xbox to be on the 5ghz band and I first noticed the signal strength was very poor, only about 1 to 2 bars showing even though it is only a room away. I went back and forth between the two bands and I did not have any improvement at all over my old router. A lot of money spent with no improvement in the network. I returned it today and will live with my old router until it finally dies.
What's great about it: Set up was easy
What's not so great: Short range, expensive

For this price I expected it would out-perform my AT&T 2wire, but it's the 2wire that laps this thing. It wasn't an easy install because I wanted to reuse the internet connection from the 2wire and replace the router with this one. That took 2 to 3 hours to do so, but I was told it would be impossible so that's a plus. The big issue is reception. I still have the 2wire wireless active and comparing the two, the 2wire blows this thing out of the water. I was amazed at how convincingly it did it too. I'm sitting in the living room writing this and the router is in the next room with just one wall separating the components and the 5Ghz reception is FAIR. Stunned.
Then I went ahead and setup my wife's laptop that has a wireless N adapter. Her's is sitting in the kitchen which might be 35 ft away from the router. The laptop shows the 2.4GHz reception at good and 5Ghz at poor. Wow. 2 walls separating and 35 ft distance. The 2wire shows up on hers as excellent. I doubt I will even pick up the router upstairs in my daughter's room, where the 2wire is excellent. Why even have any security on this thing when the hacker needs to be in my house and in my computer room to get good reception? I doubt they will even find it from the road. Going back and trying something else. It's a shame too since it had so much potential.
What's great about it: Nice software; easy to understand
What's not so great: No on/off button; horrible 5Ghz band reception
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Overall, for a router it works just as good as any other Linksys Wireless N, except it has *2 bands (basiclly two routers). One G and one N. Fast speeds, no hassle setup. But my deciding factor was the USB port on the back, for hooking up a network hard drive. Not only is it SUPER slow data rates (cant stream music or movies) but it doesnt support more that 1TB drive!
What's great about it: Super Easy Install, Dual Bands, Fast Speeds over network
What's not so great: USB Storage is slow.

After several hours of tedious research, I finally decided to take the plunge and buy this router. All the reviews I read ranged from horrible to fantastic, and the horrible reviews kept sticking in my mind. After getting this setup and working in my apartment, I can say I'm glad I bought and won't look back.
Currently I have two laptops, two desktop PCs, a wireless printer, a networked storage drive, a PS3 and an Xbox 360. With the exception of my Toshiba laptop, everything connected easily and flawlessly, even using the highest encryption. My Xbox 360 is using the Wireless-N adapter, and for the first time, I'm able to stream Netflix movies in HD with no hiccups, transitions back to SD, or 5 minute waits to just start the movie. Windows Media Center also flies as well.
On my Toshiba laptop, I had to remove all firewalls before the device would connect to the network, but once I did, it worked flawlessly (don't care about firewalls anyway and had been meaning to remove it once the free trial expired anyway).
The great thing about this device is the dual band radios. Right now my 360 is the only device using the higher end 5 Ghz band, and all my other devices can stay on the 2.4 Ghz band and not slow down my online gaming or media streaming.
If you're at all confident in setting up a wireless network and need the features that this device offers, I highly recommend it. It also has the gigabit ethernet ports, and I'm strongly considering upgrading my two desktop PCs to take advantage of this feature.
What's great about it: Incredible speed, great signal strength, great for network media and gaming
What's not so great: Setup could be easier for novice users

This machine looked great and the dual band n promised good distance and good service for multiple users. Since I hooked it up in June 2008, it has been not much better than the wireless g that it replaced. Today it stopped working correctly. Linksys support checked it online and said it is faulty. I would hope something this expensive would have wowed me more by its performance, and would have lasted more than 1 1/2 year.
What's great about it: The look
What's not so great: I never met the expectation, then died after only 1 1/2 year

I purchased this router after reading some favorable reviews on line. It was a bit pricey, but I think the router itself is very solid. My 4 year old router had been dropping connections on occasion, but since replacing it with this new one our internet connection has been solid. The trial version of Network Magic bundled with this router can simplify setting up a home network on Windows machines, but is not really necessary. The USB router port prompted me to buy a 1 TB Seagate Free Agent drive to use for backing up the PC's on our home network. While following the instructions enabled me to access the drive, the connection was not reliable. Part way through a backup the connection would fail and I would have to start over. After several attempts I gave up. This router was stamped version 2.
What's great about it: Router is easy to set up and reliable; dual wireless works well; clean design
What's not so great: Could never get the storage media option to work as expected

Okay, setup was a snap, probably one of the easiest I've ever done. Seemed like all was good until I noticed Netflix movies over the Xbox constantly stopping and restarting due to slow downs in the network. When I initially setup the network my speedtests showed 19.78 Mbps when I started having problems and checked speedtest was down to 1.3 Mbps. The advice from tech support was that I can "release and renew my IP address" to get the speed back, which it does, for about 4 or 5 hours.
Linksys tech support is useless. If you buy and have issues with the product you'll get more support from the Linksys forums then you will from Linksys.
Linksys firware upgrade will NOT help this issue. Read their forums and look at the number of complaints on this router before you buy, wish I would have.
Last hope for this router for me is being able to flash the firmware with a 3rd party product, otherwise it's a brick.
What's great about it: Ease of Use and Setup
What's not so great: bad transmission rate and speed drop offs
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I needed a new router to use wireless N and G connectivity in multiple products. My previous Dlink locked up constantly while using g and n. The Linksys 610 is very simple to setup, great range, and works with 4 wired and wireless usage. I have an xbox360 (g), ipod touch (g), iphone (g), pc (n), 2 notebook (n), roku (n), hp dreamscrean (g). All connected easily with both n and g and no lockups. Buy it!
What's great about it: easy to setup, superb range, works with N and G with no issues
What's not so great: higher price, but you get what you pay for

people need to follow directions when seting up this router. (run cd first), not that hard..... then do the step by step instructions.....again not that hard. this product is amazing. never drops anything i have hooked up to it. took no more than 10 minutes to swap my old router out with this new one. i have 3-ps3's, 2-xbox 360's, 3-printers, 2-network hard drives and 5-computers all wireless and it all works together with no problem.
What's great about it: super fast, never drops a signal, compatible with everything i have and super easy install.
What's not so great: pricey and network magic program is not included which it should be with the amount of money spent.
I would recommend this to a friend!
