What's great about it: The price was pretty
What's not so great: The software has too many safety performances that slow down efficeincy

"I had to work my way around some of the on board ACER software installs. It wouldn't allow Adobe CS3 work very well and required patches to get through the safeties. All in all a great computer for the price."

What's great about it: The overall performance is amazing for its price point.
What's not so great: Vista and short battery life.

"I was looking for a new laptop but did not want to spend a fortune for it. After looking and reading many ratings and reviews, I thought I'd give Acer a try. Was not disappointed. I was blown away by the performance and speed of this little powerhouse. Bottom line is that there is nothing out there in the same price point that can beat this laptop. Simply put...BUY IT!"

What's great about it: Inexpensive, Fast Front Bus Speed, Lightweight, Lacks preinstalled "Junk" software
What's not so great: Split HD

"I bought this laptop for traveling as it was smaller and much lighter than my 8 lbs. 17" laptop . Its front bus speed is very fast (1,600) so your programs will run smoothly even though it is only a 2GB running Vista. The split hard drive is a pain, but a minor inconvenience. The only other compliant is the rather annoying "clicky" mouse buttons but considering the price you pay it can't be perfect. All in all, I love my new lightweight Acer laptop!"

What's great about it: Least expensive 14 inch machine on market
What's not so great: mouse buttons, audio jacks, other ergonomics

"I needed a machine in a hurry when my ThinkPad died, ran into BestBuy and left 10 minutes later with the least expensive 14 inch machine ($500 and not even on sale). Took the "package deal" for Vista Ultimate to enable fax and multi-language. Overall, I'm quite satisfied. This is a practical machine, for the price, perhaps even a bit above. Performance is adequate for internet and productivity apps. Have not pushed it beyond, but it's overall faster than my older XP-equipped ThinkPad. This appears to be more of a "small business" machine than consumer. It does not come loaded with a boatload of "applets" as many 'home" machines do. Also, it sports a "PCMCIA" card slot rather than the now more common "ExpressCard". Also included are firewire and infrared ports. Battery life in "power saver" mode is a minimum of 2.5 hours. A few tweaks were needed to get the machine running smoothly: an update to McAfee Site Advisor cured "hanging" web pages. Updated audio drivers took care of an odd clicking from the speakers even when sound was turned off. That said, the machine's "ergonomics" leave somewhat to be desired. Compared to the typical HP or Lenovo machine, there are more hard edges where you might want to rest your hands or fingers. Also, as in many budget machines, ports and lights are strewn all about the case with no apparent logical plan. The trackpad is relatively small and its buttons small and loud, though very "solid" feeling. Power and other convenience buttons are small and hard to read. The curved keyboard gives you a bit more spacing than usual, but the keys sit "high" over the bezel and IMHO are at risk for being broken off if used carelessly. Acer's website is not as well organized as that for HP or Lenovo, so those needing support may need to work a little harder. Most annoying are the audio jacks, under and slightly to the right of the trackpad, a pain when using a headset (a common design feature among recent notebooks). Again, a solid machine for its class and price range. It appears to have been discontinued, though similar units are being released under the Acer and sister brand eMachines. Note: This unit has no webcam, though ones with cams are available in the market."

What's great about it: Lots Of Features For The Price
What's not so great: Split Hard Drive Greatly Shortens Usable Space

"Great 1st laptop, especially as an internet appliance.Easy to tote means smallish screen but is adequate. Biggest problem is Acers split hard drive. They split the 160gb drive to make 2 virtual drives so you have backup. Problem is, most needs for back up are hadware falure. I made the Restore Disks and then reformatted the HD to single drive and reinstalled OS. You can always backup to a different drive or media. Acer Empowerment software is intrusive. Deleted from startup in programs menu. I purchased this machine because it was the only one I found with a PC II slot and I needed it for my internet card. All in alll, a great machine for the money but it's not going to amaze you with anything but the price. Typical of all boxed computers, its overloaded with proprietory and trial issues software. If you have the knowledge to rid the machine of this, you end up with a very servicable machine for under $500."

What's great about it: great price
What's not so great: Battery life

"The acer laptop is really excellent for its price. It serves all my purpose and was well within my budget. I have not faced any problems with any acer products before as well and recently replaced my old acer with this one. Buit in wireless was something that I was particular about since I did not have it on my old one. Although the battery life is much better now with around 2 hrs a stretch right now for me, that is the only place I might expect some improvement in the future.
The aesthetics are pretty cool. The display is wonderful and crystal clear. You get a free McAfee for 2 months security as well. If budget is an important decision factor, especially in these times, just go for it - a great buy!!!"

What's great about it: Fast, everything need in a laptop
What's not so great: Windows Vista

"I installed ubuntu 8.04 on this and it now runs like a dream. Boots from cold in 15 sec. Had no problem with any hardware. Plays my 720p avc encoded videos @ 30 fps. I use a ps3 running linux to encode(faster than any intel except maybe xeon nehalem)
Vista is a bit of an old dog, I just like things fast. Vista uses 1-2 gigs of ram. Ubuntu 300 MiB. Vista is also a very ugly ui(in my opinion) Also I thought if I am going to run firefox, open office, and vlc why run windows.
One more thing read the windows eula. Very scary. Think MS goes under like bear sterns, Lehman, and all you data useless. I for one am not taking that risk.
Open Office 3 is fully compat with office 07 for free(as in speech) takes a lot of labor for the millions of devs."

What's great about it: Unbeatable price, quality construction, upgradable
What's not so great: 2 GB ram should probably be at least 3 GB for Vista

"I was all set to buy a Toshiba (AMD Turion) laptop that was on sale at Best Buy, when I discovered this little guy on the shelf...and it was the last one! What a price! It had already been altered by the Geek Squad, who do their thing to "optimize it." So I assume that means getting rid of the "bloat-ware" that another reviewer mentioned, and I ended up getting that thrown in for free.
I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend and cannot wait to give it to her! It will be her first laptop, and based on the reviews I've read so far, I hope it will be a trusty little machine for her for the next few years."

What's great about it: Fast, Wifi connection faster then old dell, runs smooth, able to play games!
What's not so great: no webcam nor bluetooth since it has the button for it. harddrive split up in half. Processer could be faster

"I bought this laptop about 3 months ago and I am excited that I did! This was well worth the 450! The features this one has that my other dell laptop didn't. I am also able to play WOW, Spore, and some other games on here. Its also light and isn't a pain to carry around. I wasn't sure if Acer would be a great brand or not but to my surprise I picked a winner in my book. I am no from this day going to buy Acer laptops. So don't pass this laptop at the price it is at!!"

What's great about it: lightweight, fast, wi-fi, great speakers
What's not so great: no webcam or no bluetooth, small screen

"This is my first laptop. I bought it not only because its affordable, but because its lightweight and its easier to carry back and forth to school. It could be improved as far as da size of the screen and the design. And its also a minus at the fact that it doesnt have a webcam or bluetooth, but if you are looking for a laptop for school with a fast wi-fi connection, this laptop is worth the full $450!"
