Great Laptop, Some Minor Issues 11/22/2008

What's great about it: Specs, inexpensive for 14.1" with these specs, runs quiet and cool
What's not so great: Not Centrino 2; Certain issues with Vista (see below)

"As pretty much everyone has already said, this laptop is great for the price. I got it at $600 in August as part of BB's back to school sale. Just last week it was $550 though, so you could still shave off $50 (maybe get it for $500 black friday from what I've heard). I dual boot into Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex which works a lot better than their 8.04 Hardy Heron (had some screen issues and other small hiccups). Vista HP 64bit runs EXTREMELY smooth. This is not for heavy video editing, so don't think about it. Doesn't have firewire ports, but I haven't had to fill all 3 usb ports yet. An annoyance I've been experiencing is coming back from Vista's sleep mode. It is a heck of a lot better than XP, but when I come back from sleep and try to either plug in the power or a usb device the computer locks up. Not sure if this is a Vista issue or a driver issue on Gateway's behalf... I use sleep heavily during school. This thing will last ALL day if you only start it up when NEEDED. Ubuntu's sleep mode has NO PROBLEMS. Only issue in Ubuntu is the heavier animations (such as desktop cube). Intel X3100 isn't quite working right with compiz, but that should be fixed sometime in the future. All in all, this is an amazing student or computer to take around. It runs cool (exhaust on left side keeps the bottom cool - whereas Macbooks BURN). If you need a laptop for school, work, or just to take around, GET THIS ONE, unless you can find same price with centrino 2."

"Great laptop. Love it. Only thing it only has a 14" screen (but very nice screen), but for $600 dollars with a 2gh processor, 4gig of ram, and 250 gig hard drive you won't find a better deal"

What's great about it: Quick Load, Fast Response, Vista Runs Great
What's not so great: Gateway doesn't supply decent DVD playback software

"Wow! This was a great buy for the price. I was turned off by Vista because of HP computers that I had experience with. I needed to update my laptop, so I was forced to finally purchase one with Vista. This machine is great! The response time is great. I believe it has a 2MB L2 cache which is amazing for the price. Also it is stocked with 4GB DDR2 memory. However, since the machine is packed already, there is no room for upgrade (4GB mem is mx). Also, I was kinda disappointed that I couldn't change the alloted amount of memory given to the onboard GPU. Still, for $579.99, it is a GREAT GREAT GREAT machine."

What's great about it: Easy setup, good documentation
What's not so great: Norton 360, the microsoft office trial, smudges

"This is such a great laptop. As this is my first new laptop, I really have no standard to base this on, but from what I've seen so far, this computer is well worth the money. The 4 gigs of ram barely gets close to max, and I've never experienced any sort of a slow down. The wireless works great, and the Vista 64 bit works so much better than I thought it would.
The only real problems I had were with Norton 360 constantly trying to activate and freezing when I tried to stop it (I just uninstalled it, I already had my own anti-virus), and it only came with a trial version of Microsoft office, and it started to freak out on me, so I uninstalled that and just got Office Enterprise 2007, which had exactly what I needed."

What's great about it: Screen brightness, battery life, alot of RAM, fast, good looking, easy to add software
What's not so great: Poor speakers but its common for the size of the laptop, glossy finish leaves finger prints

"I reaserched alot of computers around this price and i found this was usually the highest rated. even some more expensive computers didn't have all the features this Gateway does. I have been using this computer alot and haven't found anything it can't handle. Some of the reviews said it had a shallow keyboard but i respectively disagree. The bad speakers aren't a problem, i usually use headphones anyway. there are a few programs that i had to delete because they were annoying but any computer has that. I use it for work, surfing the web, and music and overall i would say its very high quality for the price."

"was shopping for a laptop for 3 weeks found this one compared it to a toshiba was sold on the toshiba for the longest time till i got to the store and worked with it and i didnt like it bought this one with out ever knowing how it was in person and was thrilled with it iv had it for 2 weeks and havent found a problem yet it set it up my self with no help very easy if you ask me would recommend this to any one looking for a great all around laptop"

What's great about it: 14.1", light, fast enough
What's not so great: haven't experienced anything yet

"I got this laptop on sale for $599.99 from BestBuy, which is a good bargain. This laptop can handle any tasks without loosing any speed . It has all easy and convenient buttons and equipments one needs for school work. As a PhD student, who needed a portable, light weighted laptop, this one never disappointed me in handling the job. I haven't experienced any problem with heating or speakers as mentioned by other customers. I got this as replacement of my old Compaq pressario 2570 which lasted 6yrs. I'm happy with my Gateway T-6836. I recommend this laptop to every students looking for a decent one."

What's great about it: 14.1" screen, great display, Vista, 4 GB ram, built in web cam and mic, battery life (4 hours)
What's not so great: The speakers are horrible, I had to buy desk speakers to listen to any music. Scratches/fingerprints very easily. Loud

"I got this laptop on sale for $650, which is a good bargain. The computer boots up fast and runs programs smoothly. I am impressed with Vista, its no where near as bad as people think. I really like how lightweight this computer is, as I take it to class and the library a lot. One cool thing is the keyboard. I think it has a nice feel, very responsive, and quiet. The battery life on the computer is awesome. Using a power save mode (dims the screen when unplugged), I get around 4 hours of life. About 2 hours of life when running on normal unplugged mode. The webcam and microphone are nicely built in. The laptop itself looks sleek, the glossy blue is attractive. However, when people complain that it shows fingerprints too much they are not kidding around. I think its worth the tradeoff to look cool though.
A few things that are annoying about the computer. As addressed before, fingerprints are annoying and the back of the laptop shows scratches easily. The volume control is touch sensitive, which is kinda cool, but can be tricky at times. The laptop does not lock shut like my old one did. (it just closes...no latches or buttons to press when opening... dont know if this is a pro or a con, but something you should check out for yourself). I recently have noticed that my DVDrom drive is pretty loud when playing DVD's or CD's. Any finally, the speakers are HORRIBLE on this laptop. I don't consider myself a "pure sound is the only sound" kinda guy, but listening to these speakers is almost offensive. It is very robotic sounding, and high pitched. Pretty much no bass and not good to even listen to a movie with. I bought desktop speakers with a bass (about $50) and the sound is great.
Overall, I really enjoy this computer and am happy with my purchase. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who wants a reliable laptop, with medium to fast performance. This is an ideal laptop for college use. Hope this helps!"

"This T series can handle any tasks without loosing any speed and battery lasts approximately 3hrs.It has all easy and convenient buttons and connections.
Thanks to labelflash technology for disc labeling and Window Vista to make our daily life easier.
It's too bad that the labelflash dvd's are hard to find yet.Hopefully they'll be more popular and available in more markets.
I would recommend this little guy to any one who is looking for affordable gear for daily use.It's a keeper for me."

"I have 2 gateway laptops and love them. I did not realize that most laptops do not have 3 or 4 usb ports. This one has 3 my other Gateway has 4. Some laptops only have 1 and this becomes a problem at times. If you are on the fence between laptops, just look at this small, but important feature."
