I have the Saphire version installed on a custom built Velocity Micro Rig. This card will take anything you through at it. I have fan speeds set at 40% for normal operation and pump it up to 50% for games. Idles at 39c and only hits 63c at full loads. Velocity Micro installed a positive pressure fan for the card which helps with cooling. DirectX 10.1 support and GDDR5 memory will let you play the latest games. Stock clock speeds are GPU 750 and Memory at 900. I have it OC'd at 780 1000 and runs smooth and cool. HDMI out for stunning HD video. Match this card up with a Intel Q6600, Asus P5N-D Mobo, 4GB of Ram, Vista 64 bit and a good 550 or greater PS and you will have a great mid priced game system. The ATI CCC software gives you total control over the whole card. Watch your drivers. BUY THIS CARD!!!
What's great about it: FAST GDDR5. VERY OVERCLOCKABLE. GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY.
What's not so great: VERY LARGE CARD. CHECK CASE SIZE BEFORE YOUR INSTALL

i went from a Radeon HD 4850 512mb to this 4870 and noticeable quite a big difference. My benchmarks increased a bit but I think it's largely due to my overclocking. I thought this was a bit expensive because the 4890's are dropping so it would've been a much better value if it was cheaper. It's not that hard to install, just slot it in the pcie slot, then install the compatible drivers. Overall I though it was a good product.
What's great about it: Upgraded from a 4850, and surprisingly there has been a very noticeable difference.
What's not so great: Had some troubles getting the right drivers to work with this card. Took a bit more time than I thought but oh well.

I went to the Best Buy in Salem, NH to purchase this graphic card and when i got home and pulled it out the box the card looked nothing like what they have on the website and after my dislike i brought it back to verify what i was looking at was the 4870 and when the manager we opened up another box to confirm that the card was the correct card we noticed that the other card had 2 fans and a hdmi port, mine only had one fan after which we tried one more and that was also a different design but all cards were the HD 4870. after contacting Visiontek it came out that they had made a total of 5 revisions to the HD4780 in this particular store we found 4 different designs needless to say that the card i had could not run crysis warhead on High without massive lag issues. i had no problem with the 4750 that came with the computer but this card could not process it and it ran extremely loud.
What's great about it: Awesome Specs
What's not so great: Dont know what your getting.

The guy below clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. The ATi catalyst drivers have a fan speed option so you don't have to run it at 100% all the time. The card itself preforms great; enables me to run at 1920x1200 resolution with max eye candy with little to no slow down. Great card for the price!
What's great about it: Great bang for the buck
What's not so great: Can get hot at low fan speeds

The fan on this thing is not adjustable at all. It runs at 100% all the time creating one amazingly loud card. I can hear the fan over 20 feet away from my computer. The fan is a 3 wire fan, so is capable of having speed control but they did not add it on the board itself. If you have a way of plugging the fan into another fan control then you might be able to adjust it to lower speeds for bearable volumes.. but even doing that is iffy. With the fan running at 100% and an ambient case temp of 44c, the gpu is a 60c idle..... this card runs ridiculously hot which is probably why they put the fan on it unadjustable the way they did. I wouldn't be surprised if it was burning out a lot at lower fan speeds.
Stay far far away from this card, the 4870 is gerat, one of the best cards for the buck out right now, but you need to find a different brand / model than this visiontek version.
What's great about it: The card performs great, able to run high settings on lots of games without getting bad framerates.
What's not so great: The noise

This video card was a replacement for my geforce 9500GS, I upgraded my power supply to 650 watts too. Overall, this card is superb, it's performance far surpases the 9500GS I had. I run Crysis at 1680x1050 on high/very high settings and it runs smooth as butter, averaging around 32-36FPS with those high/very high settings. This bad boy can overclock like no other, I'm at 850MHz core and 1150MHz memory right now with room to go up more I believe. Note: default is 750 core and 950 memory. This card is very large though, I was a bit shocked at the size of it, it takes up 2 slots so make sure you have ample room inside your case. Installing was a snap though. All tests I have performed have it beating the geforce 260 and on par with the geforce 280 so, this card is a great overclocker/performer. Also, alot of other radeon 4870's are known to have an idle temp of around 75-79 degrees C...Mine is at 59-60 degrees idle and went no higher than 72 when playing heavy games. Visiontek did a great job with cooling.
What's great about it: Price is great, performance is awsome.
What's not so great: Size!

Don't waste your extra cash on nvidia, this blows away friends 285 with
1gb of memory on it! This only has 512mb and i can run circles around him in wow.And he Paid $100+ more for his. One suggestion though, don't
waste your time with the driver cd.Go to ati's site and get the latest (as of this post) 9.1 catalyst drivers and enable overdrive, set the fan speed to 40% and she runs at 36c. with gpu oc'd at 775 and mem at 1005 (actually its 2010mhz) for u noobs. Plays crysis smooth as butter, settings ALL on high, 1680 x 1050! I was thinking of buying another for crossfireX, but
i think it'd be pointless at least for now.

I dont think any vid card could've beaten this during the time i bought it sometime around the mid september of 2008.
PROS:
800 Stream Processors
GDDR5 Memory
shorter than the nvidia gtx family
all for 250 bucks! (got this for 250 (272 w/ tax)
CON:
Only thing that I didnt like about this card was that i am not able to utilize the audio from this thing.. it says it supports HDMI (thats video and sound) but the card's DVI port>HDMI adapter>HDMI cable>HDTV only had video output.. but its not really that much of a deal to me..
I STILL CONSIDER THIS THE BEST BANG PER BUCK during the time i got it!
What's great about it: nothing beats this when i bought it here for $250 sometime on mid Sepmtember
What's not so great: I havent been able to use the audio capability of this card using HDMI yet

Games I've played on it: Crysis 1&2, Orange Box, Farcry 2, Mass Effect, Spore, Warhammer Online and WoW.
With the exception of Crysis (mostly the first as the second one wasn’t as graphics/system demanding) and WAR when there’s a Fortress Siege of hundreds of people, this card gives you all the control and power one needs to play the games they love at top settings; and some!
I gladly picked this card over Geforce 260 and the 280; I could buy a Playstation 3 for the price of the 280. And as I saw it, the 4870 had more power for price over the 260. Now, I’m not a hater of Nvidia and I will say I’ve always liked ATI, but this is simply a reliable card with a lot of power.
Please, be sure no matter what card you get, to update drives after you install it, and check every once in a while for updated drivers. So many people buy them, use the install disc and leave it there.
Some people have talked about heat, and when I play Crysis I can get it up to about about 62c. But almost everything else doesn’t break 60c and it idles just below 50c at about 40% fan speed. One might complain that the fan might be too loud, but I don’t think it is, and if you have your sound on, you won’t even hear it.
Lastly, I really like ATI’s CCC, their graphics card control options. It’s easy to use and gives you a lot of control to take your card further for all kinds of games.
In the end, if your thinking of buying this card, go for it, it’s been worth every penny and when it’s price comes down further, I’ll be buying a second one to put into CrossfireX. Get myself some more frames per second in Crysis.
Note: if you have the money, check out the HD 4870 X2 - talk about power!
What's great about it: High performance graphics for the $$$, Catalyst Control Center: over-clocking and lots of graphics/visual options.
What's not so great: It's huge, so be sure you have room for it, and be sure you have enough power supply.

This graphics card is very powerful, running all my games maxed out, and using ATI overdrive software keeping temp's below 50.C, however that said, there are some serious driver/compatability problems with ATI drivers for Vista and you can be sure youll have some system crashes.
What's great about it: DDR5 memory, Great performance
What's not so great: ATI/AMD Driver issues, unreliable

works great. havent played a game yet on max below 100 fps.
i can hear it all the time but its right next to me almost compleatly uncovered. doesnt bother me tho coz when im playing games i got sound and im into the gameplay.
had to do a clean install of my os to get the oc software to work. its fine with me coz its a brand new pc. but u might not be in that sitchuation.
my advise is put the device in. start the computer THEN deleat the old driver.
reboot. install the new drivers and catilyst. reboot and see.
my drivers were fine i just didnt want my card runingat 80 degrees C for more than an hour. now its OC able i can play 3...6...10... i wanted to test it so i did 24 hours even at 40% fanspeed and small OC. runs at 55degrees c FINE.
What's great about it: plays games amazingly. once i got the OC installed it works treat to.
What's not so great: runs hot, HUGE AS HECK, pretty loud. Catilyst OC software was tricky in vista 64.

I have this on a ga-ma-790gp-ds4h with a antec cooler and a phenom black edition 9950 cpu,8 mb's crucial balastic memory, 1000 watt antec ps all in a antec 1200 case and i am running vista ultimate 64bit and it only raised my temp a few degrees and i am only running 34c so that isn't bad. I am looking to put in one more and run it with the cross fire to see how sweet it will be. and when i push it then it only goes up to about 38c so i think that is pretty good and i haven't any problems at all so far after a couple of weeks
What's great about it: sweet price

Obviously others have liked this card, but I couldn't get it to work at all. VisionTek tech support admitted that "it has a problem with XP Service pack 3". My computer wouldn't even boot with the latest driver (8.12 released Dec 10, 2008). When the tech told me to uninstall service pack 3, I knew it was time to return it and get another card. If you're running Windows XP SP2, it might work, but I wasn't willing to remove a service pack to try it.
What's great about it: Don't know. Wouldn't boot.
What's not so great: Doesn't work with Windows XP Pro SP3

Bottom line: This card performs quite well for the money.
It performs quite well with World of Warcraft 3.02 with high graphics settings while raiding.
Pretty much the only reason I gave this a 4 for installation, is that the variable fan speed is not quite up to par. But there are 3rd party applications that allow you to set the fan speed.
What's great about it: Easy to install
What's not so great: Fan speed needs 3rd party program

Great card for the money if you game at 1600x1200 or above (although people with insanely large monitors will probably want the 4870X2). Performs solidly even in a CPU limited system and will run most games maxed out at high resolutions. The notable exception being Crysis, but everybody knows how much of a performance hog that game is so it's not a surprise. Even with that said, Crysis is still playable with good looking detail settings at a respectable resolution. If you have a 1440x900 or 1680x1050 LCD you should be fine with a mix of high and very high -- although my opinion of playable frame rates may differ from others. If you're limited to 1280x1024 or 1280x960 you might want to go for the 4850 instead. If you game at 2048x1536 or above, you might want to consider the 4870X2.
What's great about it: Solid performance, relatively low cost for the performance you get.
What's not so great: Can get hot with default fan speeds, needs a roomy case for a comfy fit.

The card is GIGANTIC! I have a Thermalake Armor case and a Asus SLI MB, so I had the room to get her in there, I'd hate to see a pre-bought case install...
As far as heat, my temps only went up 2-3 degrees, but I have 9 fans and liquid cooled CPU, so as long as you have adequate air flow, you'll be fine.
I was a huge fan of nVidia until a few years ago. I find the ATI software easier to use, including the onboard overclocking (yes, ATI actually it built into the software).
At this time with the instant $50 savings and the $10 gift card, they are the cheapest place to buy this card on the net or anywhere else, trust me, I searched, lol
What's great about it: Great, affordable upgrade, easy to use software
What's not so great: HUGE and the need for 2 6pin power cords

This card has more than impressed me. Had a nvida 8500gt which was only geting a around 6500 score on 3dmark06. My new bench marks with ever feature on the card set to quiality hit 13456. I do have it overclocked to the max, 790mhz core, 1000mhz for memory. Set the fan to 40% in the XML file. Sits at 54c and hits 60c underload. You can hear the fan a bit but its not bad. This Card not only runs smooth but blows away FPS with all setings set to max. Have had no issue's with drivers or vista 64bit so far. ATI welcome back
Intel core 2 quad 2.4
4gig ram
vista 64bit
What's great about it: Keeps the case cooler with the amount of airflow. Temp of card is not bad when you change the vaules in XML file.
What's not so great: Had to upgrade power supply to get all the power this bad boy puts out

This card surprised everyone. ATi made a huge comeback. This card is so insanely great that it can easily surpass the 8xxx nvidia series and even the 9xxx series. And the price is unbeatable. I saw an 88gts that was 270. The only problem is that you need a powerful power supply and two pci e cables. Also the card is big. But don't get me wrong there isn't a better deal out there and you won't even need crossfire. The stock cooling is great for overclocking but just in case I got a pci slot fan and it does wonders.
The price is great compared to nvidia. Do not hesitate to get it, just make sure you have a big case for it.

I got this card because I wanted to game on my PC. This card did just that. With my Athlon 6000X2, 3GB of RAM, and this 4870, I can play any game out there. I highly recommend this card if you only have one pcieX16 slot.
What's great about it: Leading performance, Overclocks easily with stock cooling
What's not so great: Have to apply fan fix, Barely fit in my HP case
I would recommend this to a friend!

I've been using NVidia cards for the past 10 years until the 48xx series came along from ATI. This card replaced an 8800GTS 512 MB and blows it away with better framerates and visuals. The only thing NVidia has at the moment that compares to it is the GTX280 which is significantly more expensive. It is easy to control the GPU temp through the Catalyst Control Center and the manual fan fix described below. I've set two fan profiles (Normal, 40% fan speed, and Gaming, 60% fan speed) and use hotkey combinations to easily switch between the two. This is a great card that gets better with each new driver release from ATI. I've definitely found a card I will keep for quite some time to come.
What's great about it: Great price-to-performance ratio; dual-slotted to expel hot air; blazingly fast
What's not so great: Runs hot even at idle; requires two 6-pin PCI-e cables
I would recommend this to a friend!
