What's great about it: HD picture, DVR
What's not so great: nothing

"If you have DirecTv, this is the box to have. HD picture with the ability to record two programs at once. I now have one in the family room and one in the bedroom, so me and the wife can have everything recorded when we got out and can watch wherever we want."

What's great about it: Quick, easy to use, good capacity.
What's not so great: Remote does not work well with intelligence sensor on LG Flat screens turned on.

"Long time DirectTV customer. The newer DVR's remove the need for multiple coaxial lines. (BIG PLUS) and are keeping up the latest times. One down side is that the remote does not work well with the LG's energy saving intelli sensor turned on. (DVR & TV co-located) Also the ring on the DVR is very bright which does not work well in a small room."

What's not so great: price

"Does a great job. This is my second one. Price is to high because if I drop Directv it doesn't work with anything else. That means I have spent that money for a product that I can't use. First one was free. Had to buy the second one. Should probably have gone with Tivo."

What's great about it: Picture
What's not so great: Overall Charges

"Ok. I've read all these reviews, and it just seems like some people don't listen. First of all, they tell you that it is a LEASED receiver when you pay for it. Your told about the early termination fee. Which starts out at $450 and then drops $20 for every month you have it. Heres what I have never understood, Direct Tv charges you a lease fee of $6 a month, so why the $199. So for a 24 month commitment @ $6 month and the initial $ 199 price, your actually paying $283 for this. I have had Direct Tv for 10 years and have never had to return any of the boxes that have gone bad, and thats about 6 now. I usually get about 12 months out of a box, if I'm lucky, before they start having problems. Of course Direct Tv always offers to send out at new one for a $20 shipping fee. So if they go bad every 12 months, that another $40, so now were at $323.

BUT heres the good news. Now this only works if you've been a long term customer and paid your bill on time. The next time you have a problem and you call Customer Service, as soon as a live person answers, ask for the "Retention" dept. These people are authorized to do just about anything to keep you as a customer. Sometimes the Customer Service person acts like they don't know that department, but trust me, they do.

Heres another trick, If you near the end of your agreement, look on their website and see what new deals their offering for "new" customers. Then call them and ask for the same thing, tell them that you can disconnect and have it put in your spouses name. You'll get what you ask for.

What's not so great: Unable to receive HD service, could not get clear satellite view.

"Unfortunately, purchased from Best Buy as XMas gift, then found out DirecTV could not install because they could not get a clear view of the particular satellite needed for HD. Warning, DirecTV charges you $49 to install if you do not purchase DVR from them, then tries to make you return the equipment to them as their property! Had to go with cable HD. I would recommend HD, great picture, but not from DirecTV."

What's great about it: heavy enough for a small boat anchor
What's not so great: Freezes all the time

"box freezes all the time , lose recordings for starters, and that 199.00 that you paid which is supposed to be a pre-paid lease fee isn't honored for equipment replacement if you are past the 90 days, unless you purchase the monthly equipment protection plan. So buyer beware!!!!!!"

What's great about it: Solid unit, works great
What's not so great: nothing so far

"I've had this DVR for over 6 months with no issues at all. I've seen a couple of reports about the $5.99 fee. That is similar to family cell plans that you can add another line for $9.99. So not too sure what the complaint is. I've been a DirecTV since 1998 and have loved their service. Their customer support for me has also been awesome. I did have a defective unit and they sent me a new one out without issue. Anyway back to the DVR, it has been great. One feature that I have really used is the iPhone app for DirecTV that allows me to record a show from anywhere. So when I am running late, I just pull out the phone, find the show and press record. I love their service!!"

What's great about it: HD recording capability
What's not so great: Directv's customer service

"I have been a Directv customer for over 10 years only because of their NFL Sunday Ticket programming. My HD DVR unit has HDMI capability, which has not been working since August. When I called Directv they indicated that it was a software issue and would be fixed soon. Now it is end of December and still no fix. I asked them to replace the box since obviously the software issue must only be on my unit. They indicated they could not (even though I am paying $5.99 month for the protection plan). If you don't want special programming that Directv offers, go cable or another company who honors their commitments."

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Everything

"It is ridiculous that you have to pay $199 leasing fee to initially get a receiver. As many of these people have indicated in their reviews, I also have had problem with the programming guide and having to reboot it. What is outrageous is that the problem does not get fixed and DTV will charge you to cancel their service. The only people that gave this product (Directv) a 5 out of 5 and would recommend it to a friend are DTV employees creating fake accounts or you have a horrible friend. I waited for my contract to expire and went with another company that does not charge leasing fees to initially get a receiver. Please do your research before doing business with a company that has many hidden fees."

What's great about it: Guide, DirecTV features
What's not so great: Upgrade price, response time

"DirecTV is the industry leader, is innovative, and always looks for ways to improve the TV experience and this box incorporates all of the "extra" features they promote on their website. As for performance, the DVR and on-screen guide functions we have come to expect for TV watching are very intuitive. HD channels are the same number as their SD siblings and duplicates can be hidden (so if you're upgrading to HD you don't have to re-learn channel numbers). The box sometimes responds to the remote slowly and takes its time "thinking" after you press a button. Also (soap box moment) I think it's absurd that DTV charges so much to upgrade your box when THEY still own the equipment, lock you in for 2 years, AND charge a $10/mo fee for HD and $6/mo for DVR. Yet in the end it's still worth it when compared to cable and when you know chances are great you'll get new channels and options FIRST."

What's great about it: Good picture
What's not so great: DVR functions, have to reset constantly

"I read alot of reviews on this box, I was hoping that DTV had fixed the issues with it that alot of people complained about. I've owned (or rented, however you want to look at it) this box for not even 6 months now, initially everything was fine, but for the last few months I have to unplug to reset the box at least once a week because it freezes. Usually takes about 5 to 10 mintues to reboot. Also, bad communication between the box and remote. Box is often very slow to respond to the buttons I press. As for the DVR functions, its definetly no Tivo. Menu functions can be a pain to navigate, dual tuner gets easily confused when I want to record one thing and watch another live. The only good thing about this box is the picture, but anything in HD should have a good picture, so this box does not have a whole lot going for it. If you can be patient, wait for the HD Tivo for DTV, you won't be happy with this one down the road."

What's great about it: Recording capacity
What's not so great: Reset time

"Despite bad reviews, purchased the box and glad that we did. We are informed consumers and read for ourselves what we are getting into. The associate told us the equipment was leased, the receipt had the information as well regarding the lease and contract for 2 years. We asked directv about the $5 lease fee and they happily explained its the fee to send programming to the box since we have more than one, and the word lease is included because it is a leased box. If we were ever to cancel our directv, I would have no problem returning the equipment because what would I do with it if I wasn't receiving their service? Guess some people like to accrue useless items? I had to reset because my caller id wasn't showing, that took like 15 minutes which was a bit long, but I just vaccumed while it did it's thing. We are happy with our box, just suggest to everyone, with this and anything purchased, know what you are getting into before you agree!"

What's not so great: Receiver "Leasing"

"DirecTV charges a $199 leasing fee to use a receiver, than a $5 / month receiver fee when you subscribe. Then the DO DEMAND the receiver back when you cancel your subscription. What a joke! No one I talked to could give me a good explanation for the Leasing Fee and monthly charge.

What's great about it: Easy to use, HD content, recording one show while watching another, recording two shows
What's not so great: Nothing

"I have read most of the reviews that have been written about this fantastic technology!!! I have not had any issues with the product at all. If you investigate before you buy you would know that the $199 paid is a rental and not a purchase. You would also know that your contract is extended two additional years. To buy this receiver it would cost much more then it does. The monthly charge helps them make this up. I do not see a problem with this. DirecTv is the business of making money. The technical service is outstanding, that is one of the reasons that I left the local cable company and went to DirecTV. The menu us very easy to navigate. The fast forward on recorded shows is great. You can skip through the commercials without having to watch them. This way I can watch an hour show in 45-47 minutes. The changing of channels is a little slower but not by much, it is not a distraction. It is nice to be able to hide the duplication of channels when one is in HD and the other is in SD. This makes navigating the Menu guide much easier. If a channel is not shown in HD then it still shows up and the guide indicates if the show is in HD or not. It only shows the shows that are in HD with a large HD next to the show. It is easy to tell if it is HD or not. The charges for the service and equipment are very fair and in my market are cheaper then what I get for Time Warner, which is the worst. The customer service reps at TW have no knowledge about their product. If they do know they are unable to explain it in a way that anyone can understand. I have my DVR connected to the telephone and get regular firmware updates. They typically are done in the middle of the night so you are not even aware that they are done. I also like that I can see on the screen my caller id. This way I do not need to try and read the info on my small handset. Overall there are a huge number of options available on the DVY menu that it seems a lot of folks that have written reviews about have no idea are there. It just takes some investigating. DirecTV sends out monthly newsletters that tell about there new items available through there service. They also send out tips on things that yo might have forgotten about if you have had the DVR for some time.

Bottom line, I suggest that everyone get DirecTV service and get an HD DVR. Spend some time at DirecTV's website to learn about the additional functions that are available and also investigate the menu items on the DVR itself. You will be amazed at all the things that are available!!!

EVERYONE SHOULD GET DIRECTV. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!

What's not so great: sluggish channel changing compared to conventional units

"I bought/leased this when I needed a new receiver capable of getting HD programming, and I wanted the capabilities of a DVR...this was my only choice. I have been a loyal costumer for over 5 years, and this is my 3rd receiver, and the 2nd that I bought at a store on my own accord.

I'd like to address the issue that people seem to have, in which they seem disappointed because they don't "own" the unit, rather lease it. Yes, the $199 is the Lease Fee....but by no means does that mean that DirecTV demands the receiver back after you drop there service, provided you don't terminate early. Once you commit to the designated length, the receiver is yours to do whatever you want with...I have 2 in-active receivers, and have yet to have anyone demand I return them.

As far as the receiver itself, I'm rather pleased; It's only major flaw is it suffers from "slow-down" of epic proportions. Changing the channel, or accessing any function tends to take longer than normal. I'm told the problem stems from the constant updates given, and merely requires a simple 1-button reset of the system to "refresh" it. For the most part, resetting the system definitely helps...but changing the channel is a bit slower than i'd prefer.

The other pluses;
This receiver also acts like most Windows Media Systems do; Simply connecting the box to your existing Network allows you to stream MP3's, view photos, and certain video-files on the receiver from your PC.

Also a big seller (to me anyway) is DirecTV's constant updates and software updates, all free. Recently added and just in time for Football season is the Sports Score function....simply hitting 1 button brings up all current and major sports scores. No longer will you need to wait until the channel displays the score of the game you want to know....hitting the button brings it up instantly, and it's up-to-date.
They also just added "The App-Store"..despite "Store" in the name, they are all free. I'm not a big fan of it yet, as it seem's to still be in beta, but one of the better features is Flickr Photoalbums. Having the receiver networked to a high-speed internet connection allows you to view any Flickr Photoalbum. I'm sure once they expand upon the "App-Store", I'm sure bigger capabilities will be added; Perhaps YouTube, or Streaming Internet-Radio...

Overall, I'm happy. I wish the channel change was faster, and I didn't have to reset the receiver to speed things up everytime a major update is added, but I'm sure those will be addressed in the future.
"

What's great about it: esay to use, when it worked
What's not so great: probably won't work very long

"I reluctantly bought an HR22 to replace our very high quality customer owned Direct TIVO HR10-250 HD DVR, that worked flawlessly for many years waiting (in vain) for DirectTV to deliver more than a few channels of HD.

The HR22 failed completely less than six months after being placed in service. When it worked, it was easy to use, although the HD picture quality was mediocre, with digital artifacts at the edges of the picture,

The old Direct TIVO HR10-250 HD DVR is now back in service.

I have been a DirectTV customer for at least ten years. In my opinion, the quality of their currrent equipment is very poor compared to past offerings.
