What's great about it: IMAGE QUALITY IN LOW LIGHT
This is my second D700's. For my assignments, including weddings and events, I need to have 2 units. One is with 24-70 or 14-24 and other is with 70-200.
Low light performance is excellent and highly recommended.

What's great about it: Great for techy who loves gadgets and photography
What's not so great: Deciding upon lens to pirchase
Professional grade camera at a fraction of the cost - For FX, highly recommend best buy - ease of purchase, expedited shipping, and customer service. Best Buy had his item when other competitors had to order and raised price and time to ship (to acquire).

What's great about it: Very easy to use. Great in low light.
What's not so great: I like larger cameras... if you are looking for something smaller you might look else where.
I purchased the D700 recently to get my photography skills back up to par before my first child was born. My background is in 35mm photography and since graduate school I hadn't done anything with photography except digital point and shoots and my iphones. I was blown away at how easy to use the D700 is. The controls are very intuitive... especially compared to my older Nikon CoolPix 5700 point and shoot. Everything just makes sense. It takes great pictures. It works really well in low/available light. It's really fast. Being full frame is fun. I'm blown away at the value for the cost... especially considering that a few years ago this sort of camera was far more expensive and way out of my price range.

What's great about it: Everything!
What's not so great: All of the features are a little overwhelming at first
The D700 is by far the best camera I have ever owned. Its a little more complicated than most of Nikons other cameras but with a little time and practice you will be utilizing all of its amazing features. The quick reference guide Nikon provides is also very usefull right outta the box. Get the D700 along with a full frame lense and a CF memory card and you will amaze yourself!

What's great about it: High-ISO performance, relatively (To the D3) small/light, Full-frame FOV
What's not so great: While peerless in it's class when new, the D700 specs are no longer "unmatched" outside of the Nikon D3 offerings
I already own the D300s and just received the D700 this past July. The D700 is a great complimentary camera body to the D300s as they share the same accessories, batteries, and controls, so once you own one, you are likely all set with your needs for the other as well.
The D700 is worlds-apart in photo and High-ISO performance from my old D90, but until you hit ISO 3200, there is little difference between the picture quality of the D300s and the D700. However, I can comfortably shoot at ISO 3200 or sometimes even 6400 with the D700 and not feel that I need to explain about the noise levels in photos. (NOT the case with the D300s or D90!)
I've shot with the Nikon D3, and find it to be no better than the D700 in terms of picture quality or high-ISO performance. (Though I hear that the D3s is slightly better than both the D3 and the D700...)
So I offer the following opinions:
If you shoot sports or wildlife photography, don't NEED the 9 frames per second of the D3, and usually have decent amounts of light, you will likely LOVE the D300s for the added 1.5x of focal length and faster shutter speed of 7 frames per second over the D700 5 frames per second. (My lenses of choice: 18-55mm DX kit lens with VR, 70-300mm VR, 500mm VR f/4, 300mm f/2.8 with 2x TC-201/301(301 is better optically than the 201) or 1.7x TC-17E)
If you shoot sports at night or in poor lighting, (ie. gymanstics or basketball) then you will love the high-ISO performance of the D700 so you can keep your shutter speeds higher and "freeze" those action shots. (My lenses of choice: 300mm f/2.8, or 70-200 f/2.8)
If you photograph events (weddings, parties, etc..) then the D700 is likely the Nikon camera for you. It's small, easy to manuever, and can handle everything from freezing the motion of children at play to groups of people at their most animated moments when you use fast lenses. (My lenses of choice: 35mm f/2.0, 50mm f/1.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, or 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 with MACRO capability for daytime/bright light)
If you are photographing portraits then the D700 is still likely the Nikon camera for you unless you are a PAID professional shooting daily for extended periods in which case go for a D3/D3s/D3x. (My lenses of choice: 85mm f/1.8, or 300mm f/2.8)

What's great about it: Possibly the best buy for the Nikon Pro Series
What's not so great: Shoots only 5 Frames Per Second out of the box.
The Nikon D700, regardless of your experience level, will wow you right out of the box. This camera is larger and heavier than most if not all Nikon cameras you may have used if this is an upgrade for you. At 12.1 mega pixels and shooting 5 frames per second out of the box, this camera is capable of capturing some amazing images while utilizing the cameras full frame sensor to shoot in full frame mode. The camera also has an option that allows one to shoot in DX mode but after shooting in full frame mode on a camera such as this, I can't imagine why you would want to digress.
I have used this camera to shoot sports, local family outings and vacations under various lighting conditions. Under the low light situation indoor or outdoor, you will quickly realize what separates this camera from the rest. In one word, AMAZING! This camera has the ability to draw light in under extremely low light situations and produce in image in many instances that is noise free. As you continue to play around with the camera you'll notice that you don't need to set your ISO so high despite your ability to keep going and going and going with it.
This is a GREAT camera with lots of controls. If you have never used a DSLR, you may want to take an in depth course if your choice is the D700. It can appear to be overwhelming. After a few uses, you may not be able to shoot like a pro but you'll produce as good an image or better as you would had you gone with one of the less expensive models.

What's great about it: Low light capability, Full-size sensor, wonderful features.
What's not so great: Price, but probably appropriate - you get what you pay for.
This is not a beginner's camera, but its features are reasonably easy to use with some trial and study (a qualification to my "Excellent ease of use" rating). It takes a while to learn everything it can do but you can start shooting and look things up as needed, which is okay. I had already used Nikon film cameras for several years and appreciate how the features of the D700 remain familiar and well thought out. I also did not need video in a DSLR. Tons of previous Nikon lenses or accessories work with it, but research that first! e.g., don't use old tele-converters, fish-eye lenses, etc., that aren't compatible. The full-size FX sensor was very important to me mainly for (1) good results in low light (2) keeping full width on wide-angle lenses (no magnification ratio). The low-noise results are amazing. Even ISO 6400 produces results very useable in a practical sense and seems way less noisy to me than grain from 35mm film. So far I'm using it mostly with AF-D prime lenses. A-I lenses work easily in aperture mode, and T-mount lenses as usual in manual mode. All those work fine on my film Nikons as well. There are a wide variety of accessories available from Nikon plus others by 3rd parties that are of decent quality and reasonable price. *** This is an amazingly capable camera! *** with that good solid Nikon feel. I (an experienced amateur) really enjoy using it.

What's great about it: It does what you tell it to do.
What's not so great: None so far
I got it as an upgrade from my Nikon D70 and I am glad I waited this long ( 6 years) to upgrade. At least I can see the difference in the photos I have taken and difference from the camera itselves. I am still keeping my D70 as a back up and to use in taking different kind of photos. What I like about the 700 is the fact that i can use old lenses and benefit from the lense's full frame shots. It is a fast camera and great for indoor or night time shots. I am still studying it so i am not able to say much about it, but for now I am enjoying my new toy.

What's great about it: High ISO, Battery Life, Image Quality, Live View, Anti-Dust Vibration System, DX Crop Mode
What's not so great: Only 95% View Fnder Coverage
I bought the D700 after finding myself in some situations where the lighting was dim and I could no longer push the ISO on my D300. The FX sensor in this camera is like a light sponge. I have no problems setting the camera to manual and turning on the auto ISO and getting outstanding images at ISO up to 6400. The image quality at 5000 is similar to the image quality at ISO 800 on the D300. There is a slight amount of noise at 6400, but with some minor noise reduction in post processing, ISO 6400 still produces a very good image. If you go beyond that, plan on having a little more noise to have to clean up, but if you nail the exposure, you can get a usable image at ISO 12,800. Image quality is nothing short of spectacular. The images from this camera take on a 3-D feel that you just don't get out of a DX sensor.
The 3" LCD is very bright and resolution is outstanding. The menus and controls required no real learning curve, I already have a D300 and the menus and controls are laid out very much the same.
Battery life is very good and the Quick Charger recharges the battery in a short amount of time. I have gotten over 800 shots on single charge and the battery still showed 18% left. Using live view or excessive "chimping" will reduce battery life.
The live view mode is enjoyable to use for macro photography. The LCD is much easier to use when manually focusing with a small DOF typical in macro photography.
The anti-dust reduction system is very effective. My D300 with the same system, is two years old and I have yet to need to "wet clean" the sensor filter after 40K shutter actuations.
The DX Crop mode is also nice if you are upgrading and don't have an arsenal of full frame lenses. Although you will get a reduced mega-pixel image, you can still benefit from the low light performance. The view finder does show the outline of the DX crop to help you compose your image when using this with a DX lens.
The only negative thing I have to say about this camera, and it could be considered trivial, is the fact that the view finder only shows 95% of your image. I would have given a 5 star rating for features if it were a full 100% coverage like the D300.
I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a high resolution, full frame, low ambient light, proven camera to take their photography to the next level.

What's great about it: Makes working indoors with sports a snap. I work in high school gymnasiums, and is like working NBA!
What's not so great: Cost a pretty penny on a limited budget. Somewhat heavy frame with the lens used, probably weighs close to eight pounds.
A complete step up in all facets. Big ISO (6400), unlimited points of light, very easy to maneuver and manipulate. Is like having a D3 series without the cost. Is extremely fast with the battery pack (DB-10). Shooting sports and features indoors and also outdoors, I can go from stopped, well-lit areas to sports action in high school gyms without much demotion in quality and pixelation. Highly recommend this product if you cannot afford a D3X or comparable model.

What's great about it: ISO to 6400 is incredibly sharp, no noise! Full size sensor! Many custom features!
What's not so great: I can't say anything bad about this camera! May be heavy for some people.
I have been a photography enthusiast for over 32 years, owned Nikon's back to the F2. The D700 without a doubt is the most incredible camera I have ever owned period! If you read the pro reviews they will be fast to tell you the the D700 compares to the majorly expensive D3 & D3X which sell for a whapping $5000 & $8000 an its true. There are a few features missing however most of us wouldn't think of needing or using them.
Some might think this camera is too heavy however, keep in mind that in the photo world weight is stability and I like that well built feel.
The full size FX sensor produces some incredible images with minimal noise at an incredible ISO 6400. Keep in mind that a full size sensor will trump high maga pixels in a C size sensor for image quality any day of the week, period!
If you are a serious ameteur or pro/semi pro you will love this camera.
Take advantage of Best Buy's 18 months no interest, take the plung and buy this camera you wont be sorry!!!!

Overall it has great picture quality. Don't use a DX lens or you won't get the full quality level of images that this camera is capable of taking.

What's great about it: The image quality is beyond belief it is so good
What's not so great: You need to take a class or watch a video to get the most out of it.
I've owned this for more than a year. Although Nikon upgraded the D300, it has not upgraded this workhorse, and for good reason. It has the highest # of megapixels available in a Nikon pro-am camera, and it takes only FX lenses. While it will take a DX lens and it will work, it will produce only a 6 megapixel image that's truncated. I use only FX lenses with this camera and I have been very very happy with it.
If you buy this camera you're nuts if you don't get the warranty. Six months after I had this I got a spot on the sensor. I tried to blow it off without any luck. I took it back to Best Buy, and because they couldn't fix it, they replaced it with a new one. You can't get better service than that. This is a great product from a really great store.

What's great about it: Low-light performance, uses any post-1977 Nikkor lens, great viewfinder, not huge
What's not so great: still kind of big and heavy, still pretty expensive
When the Nikon D1 appeared circa 2001, we all dreamed that a semi-affordable, reasonably sized, full-size-sensor version might someday exist. Now it does.
The D700 is the smaller cousin of the enormous D3 -- they share the same sensor and a good deal more. The D700 takes great low-noise photos right up to ISO 6400. It will use (and meter with) those classic and affordable old Nikkor AI and AIs manual lenses and just about any other Nikkor. It offers true 35mm depth-of-field, and it has all the bells and whistles that make professional cameras a pleasure to use.
But with a battery the D700 weighs about 2.5 lbs. -- and that's before you even add a lens. My D700 and my Nikkor 24-120mm VR weight 3.75 lbs. together. And they're BIG. Keep your D60 for those camping and hiking trips.

What's great about it: The design makes it very easy to switch between different settings and the ISO is fantastic

Overall I think it is a great camera. I would like it have more MP for the price but a full frame Nikon is hard to beat. I would recommend this for someone looking for high ISO and a great user interface. I am really impressed with the controls and over all performance.

What's great about it: low light performance, picture quality, menu features
What's not so great: HEAVY, zoom lenses have less zoom than on a DX camera
Great camera! I shoot a lot of indoor swimming under flourescent lights without the aid of flash. The pictures are stunning, even at ISOs of 1600+. You can customize your very own menu with only the options that you actually use. Ther are three buttons you can set to your choice of menu options, eliminating the need to actually go into the menu. Love the ability to get really wide angles with my fx lenses, but when I need to get distance in a zoom lens, I do miss being able to get as close up as I could with my DX D200. A 200mm fx lens no longer has the range of a 300mm lens. Oh well, the price you pay for greatness!

What's great about it: low light ISO, low noise, pro quality, everything
What's not so great: nothing at all
Hands down, this is the best camera I have ever used or owned. That said, I haven't used that D3X yet. The low light capabilities of this camera cannot be touched by any other. That alone makes the price tag worth it. The closest thing comparable is the Canon 5DMkII which is really good too. You must remember that on this pro camera, you have to also use the pro build lenses. The cheapy lenses on all the D40,60,80,90,300 won't work properly because the sensor is so much larger on this camera. Wow! What a camera

What's great about it: High ISO...No Noise
What's not so great: NX2 is not included
I Love, Love, Love this camera! An affordable full frame DSLR with features similar to Nikon's flagship D3 camera. I often shoot in situations where I have to use available light inside a barn or covered arena and previously I dreaded using high ISO's....now I can shoot at ISO 2000 with virtually no noise.
An excellent camera from Nikon

What's great about it: Lightweight, Full Frame, Highest ISO available on DSLR
What's not so great: Capture NX2 not included
This is a relatively affordable alternateive to a D3. It makes my 17-35mm zoom a TRUE 17mm wide angle lens -- no more DX adjustments. Available light photography has a new meaning, routinely shooting a ISO 3200 with the capability of going all the way to ISO 25600! Add the optional MB-D10 battery pack and a UDMA enabled compactflash card and you have the high performance 8 fps action camera. Look through the viewfinder and compare it against any other manufacturer and you'll immediately appreciate what it has to offer. Comfortably viewable even with glasses!
