What's great about it: so many possibilities with this camera

just great, just get it seriously, I know it seems like ALOT of cash--but you won't be disappointed. This camera has the bells and whistles, it can take great pictures. Very enjoyable to use, I have had mine for 2 years--I'm still learning new things with it ( I never want to upgrade, just want this camera forever)
The battery life is amazing, it lasts forever

This is an amazing camera and I love everything about it. I have read some reviews where people were dissapointed with the smaller size of it, but I think it's perfect. I use it mainly for pictures of my boys, but I will be going to school to take some photography classes (just for fun really) and this is the camera I will be taking. It takes amazing photos and is very easy to use.

I have had this camera for about a week now and I would love to say that this camera has replaced my Canon G11 camera. I am in love with how easy it is just to pick up and start using if you aren't used to the controls. I love how easy it is to learn from it too. A great buy.

I have been wanting and looking at this camera for YEARS and finally had enough $$$ to get it! Price has gone down since I first looked at it which was great, got a great package deal price. Camera is just as I always wanted! Takes GREAT pics, great quality, very quick and easy to use for the basic stuff. Still need to learn how to use the other stuff. Very glad I got it though! Just starting out doing more professional stuff and this is a great camera to do it with! LOVE it!

This is my first dSLR moving from the "one shot" arena, and I don't think I could have picked a better camera for it. I have used Canon cameras in the past and always been extremely satisfied with them - this time is no exception.
I bought this camera as part of a BestBuy.com package special, with the base, basic lens, 75-300mm telephoto lens and camera bag all together. My only real complaint was the bag - it was far, far too small to fit everything that came in the package so I ended up using an old video camera bag instead. Other than that, the camera itself and the lenses have been a dream. I also later bought an external flash to further expand the camera's capabilities beyond what the built-in flash can do.
For storage, I recommend at least an 8GB SDHC card. Don't skimp here! The faster the card, the faster the camera can write to it, especially if you want to use the automatic multi-shot feature to capture action sequences. At full size (10.5mp) with an 8GB card, I can get approximately 1600 photos on one card, so that should be enough for the average user.
Since December I have taken well over 1000 pictures and all of them have been incredible. Whether manually setting the exposure and various options, or going fully automatic, I get exactly what I want every time. Sure, I could've gone more expensive and got a major, expensive, professional camera. In my case, however, that would have been serious overkill. I have taken everything from celebrity interview photos to landscapes to action photos of grey whales off the coast and each has come out fantastic.
Yeah, it took me a while to figure out how to enable and use the "Live View" feature so I could see the picture through the LCD like you do on a one shot camera. It's not very well explained in the manual, which appears to have been poorly written by someone not very well versed in English. That's OK, though - that's what Google is for.
The quality of the photos, though - that's the important part. They are amazing. The default 18-55mm lens that came with the camera is perfect with its auto focus and image stabilization, rendering a perfect shot every time as long as I remember to point it in the right direction. The 75-300mm telephoto lens gives great shots as well, although it doesn't have image stabilization, so if you want really good shots I recommend a tripod.
If you are looking for a camera that will let you start out quick and learn as you go, this one is for you. Start off with the automatic settings and it will take amazing pictures. Then start learning what all those settings do and experiment, to see what happens. After all, it's digital! if you don't like what you got, just erase the pictures and try again.

It's a great camera, easy to handle and very lightweight. What bothers me is that it doesnt have many features as a nikon does. For example, you can't change the color of the pictures on the camera. Also, you cant look through the screen to take a picture, most SLR cameras have both options you can either look through the screen or through the little hole.
I would recommend this to a friend!

As an entry level model it has great features but I suspect that we will be wanting to upgrade within a year. Great camera and a great price.

I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I had originally purchased this camera but didn’t want to be limited by the 10 mega pixels so & purchased the Canon T2i. My advice would be that, unless you plan on pursuing photography on a serious basis or plan on taking photos in real low lighting, go ahead & get this camera. This camera is more than capable of taking great quality pictures. Any skilled photographer can take this camera & take amazing pics that you would not believe. If you are just beginning, it will take you a while before you master all that this camera is capable of doing. To really take advantage of it, you need to get it out of Auto mode. Just go to Flickr or YouTube & search Canon 1000D or Rebel XS & you’ll see amazing pictures. Another great benefit is, the lower mega pixel count = smaller file sizes. The battery life is excellent, it’s extremely easy to use, it’s lightweight, compact & yes..it does have live view mode, if you read the manual. I even had to show a Best Buy employee how to access it. FYI: live view on just about any camera is terrible. It’s best to use the viewfinder for faster performance.

My parents purchased this for me as a surprise Christmas gift and might I say I was in awe when I opened it.

First, there isn't a Live-view mode available on most of the default settings (ie close-up view or automatic); zoom lens doesn't focus very well when fully zoomed in (my zoomed photos turned out very hazy); loud shutter sound; and lastly no video. I was expecting for the price that my parents paid for that it would at least have a video. It's not even a month of having this camera and I'm already contemplating to trade-in this camera for the T1i, or at least till I have enough money to get the T2i or any better DSLR that comes out in the future.

The camera is a good value, giving lots of features and benefits for the investment. The range of the lens is the same as higher price cameras. The auto light optimizer is an overlooked feature which provides better images in contrasty situations. Canon has a well-deserved reputation over the years for quality cameras and optics.
