What's great about it: Fits nice on the desk and the XL print cartriges save on ink costs.
What's not so great: Short life, could never get the wireless to work
I could never get the wireless connection to work right but other than that it was a pretty good printer for about a year. Now I have to buy a new one because it keeps jamming the printer and even though there doesn't appear to be any bits of paper in the printer, it is still saying that it jammed. Another reviewer said this has a bad roller design and I believe that to be the case. If the printer part is jammed, it won't let you scan either. If this printer was $30-40 I could probably deal with it but I paid about $110 or so for this printer and it only lasted about a 12-13 months. Spend more money and get a better printer.

What's great about it: Absolutely Nothing
What's not so great: Most unreliable printer I've ever owned over 25 Years
DO NOT PURCHASE!!!
This printer and software package is plagued with so many issues that it’s become impossible to deal with. The HP helpline cannot resolve the issues after 12 attempts. I have spent an unbelievable amount of time trying to keep this printer useful. If you have unlimited amount of time to waist then you might in fact like this item. I am so disgusted I will never purchase another HP printer again. This is remarkable that HP succeeded in destroying an unshakable relationship after having purchased over 60 HP Printers thru the years.

What's great about it: Wireless, Small
What's not so great: Roller broke constantly, wireless hard to set up
Bought mine new at the end of last year, worked ok but sucked in the paper quite violently which ended to its demise. A couple months back it started sucking the paper in and crumpling every sheet of paper. Said it had a paper jam but after taking off the back, cleaning everything, resetting it. It still said it had a paper jam. I've had to send it back twice to get fixed. They said its a bad roller in the design. DONT BUY!

What's great about it: Compact size, wireless
What's not so great: Works about 15% of time
I thought it was just me. First one, replaced after one month. Should have taken the hint. Second one lasted 6 months. I have more case numbers with HP than I care to think about. Not only do I have to reset the printer, but it no longer allows me to hit the "OK" button. The cartridges are always out of alignment, but getting them to align is a problem with the Menu window not allowing the user to select the necessart menu to fix the cartridges. Consider looking at other brands.

What's great about it: Looks nice, prints well went it actually works.
What's not so great: Constantly will not print, frequently has problems detecting ink cartridges.
This printer was great at first. I'm a student going back to school, and I have to do an abundance of printing. I print at least every other day. At first it was great to print, and I had no worries, but then the nightmares started. I have had numerous problems with the signal actually getting to the printer. The printer is slow, and the quality is not that great. I tell it to print in black and white, and it tries to print in half color and black and white. I want to print something before class, well I can kiss that idea goodbye, because I need at least an hour to print something that would take a few minutes. And to top it off, today it won't recognize the ink cartridges, and this isn't the first time this happened. I also waste so much paper, because I have to reprint things constantly. This printer is a waste of money, and HP should feel ashamed to make such a product!

What's great about it: Photo Quality
What's not so great: Printing tiime could be a tad bit quicker but it is an inexpensive photo printer.
I have read the reviews from people on here concerning this printer and most of the negative ones seem to be about the wifi function. I personally am not using this function so I cannot comment on it's worth. The photo function however is not too bad. I have printed 8x10's with this and find them to be very nice. I shoot with a Nikon D90 and a Nikon D300, they are very high Megapixel camera's but the print quality is very good. I can average around 20 to 25 8x10's per color cartridge, just an estimate, not sure on the 4x6 range with the ink. I would recommend this printer to someone if they were wanting to print photos but for the wireless or document side of things I would say I do not have that much time into on that end of things. Hope this helps.

What's great about it: got it for $80 with my netbook purchase
What's not so great: wireless connection is horrible...have to constantly unplug it to reset it
I've had my black C4599 printer (I guess no longer avail) since late Jan 2009. the black C4599 looks just like the white one. it installed & worked fine right away, but if you aren't constantly printing, it loses signal & I've had to constantly unplug it to reset it...even to just use the USB connection. I've had an HP6210 since 2006 and not one problem...I love that printer...this one's going into the trash/being exchanged for something else since HP better replace this one and I don't want the white one either since it seems it's gotten such bad reviews too. I reviewed my netbook, but didn't bother for this C4599, I guess cuz I never had a problem with my other one. I put in a call to HP...have a case # and am calling them later cuz they need the serial number. the buttons are a pain too..no menu like the HP6210..I can't even cancel something cuz it's always trying to print an alignment pg every time I reset it. ugh.. DON'T BUY.

What's great about it: I got it on sale
What's not so great: connection is finicky, printer frequently became nonresponsive, only worked 4 months
At first I thought it was good. I got it on sale for seventy, and wireless connection started easily. Problems began almost immediately. If the printer was left on a couple hours (whole point of wireless connection not needing to be near the thing) , it stopped responding and had to be turned off and then on. After a couple months the power button broke, so it would not turn off. Then a few weeks later, the printer stopped printing. Connection confirmed and would print the HP test pages, but couldn't print from internet browser, word, or adobe pdf reader. Went through all HP troubleshooting, and nothing helped. Still works as a copier, but I needed a printer.

What's not so great: overall product is great a little slow to print.
this product is great no more hasseling with cords making it easy to set up stressfree. Prints come out looking great in little time, picture quality at its max! great for college dorms with multiple computers, or if living in the fast lane has you moving around easy to move with its small size.

What's great about it: NOTHING!!!
What's not so great: software, connectivity, quality, overall a bad, bad device
To start with, the software included is out of date and you have to download the new software from the website, along with multiple critical updates for connectivity and firmware. This is what I was told by their tech support, which I've had to call 10 times for a total of over 15 hours of on-the-phone support that usually leads to a band aid fix for my issue, only to see the same problem happen over and over and I have to call again. I've had to call for the initial setup, for it constantly disconnecting and for the scanner not working because it is disconnected. BEWARE that you are purchasing a problem when you buy this item and you will have a head ache in no time at all. The fastest thing this printer does is make you frustrated. DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER!!!

What's not so great: Couldn't be harder to set up.
I wish I could write a base review of the printer itself, but the truth is that I never made it past the software installation process. HP required that the software be installed to be able to connect the printer to my network, but because my user home directory was the H drive instead of the C drive (work computer), the software failed to install with a fatal error. I tried downloading current software from HP's site, but to no avail. After over an hour fighting with it, I gave up and packed everything back up and returned it to the store. One of the other things I noticed is that the printer could only connect to the network via wireless, so I couldn't make a go of trying it with a wired connection.
All in all, I was frustrated with the quality of the software, the printer construction felt a little flimsy, but I can't say anything about the actual printing.
I ended up buying a Lexmark X7675 for not much more than this printer and it easily installed on my network. The software for the Lexmark had no problems installing on my computers and the printer itself had many more features, including both wired and wireless connection capability, a document feeder, and two-sided printing capabilities.

What's not so great: Prone to malfunctions
Bought printer for everyday needs. It was easy to set up but it stopped working after warranty ended due to an ink system failure. I have to say I liked it a lot when it worked, but no way now would buy another HP Printer again. I am looking at Canon All in Ones now.

What's great about it: It comes with a USB cable, unlike most from what I have heard
What's not so great: either awful print quality or malfuctioning printer
I purchased this printer today, and after reading other reviews I was worried about the difficulty of the setup. To my surprise, setup was simple! The problem came when I tried to print a photo (the entire purpose of a photo printer). All but one inch of my 6 inch picture was blurry. I aligned the cartridges, cleaned the cartridges, changed the photo quality to Best on the advanced options....still nothing. I then contacted HP and used their online chat option to help. The first girl sent me less than helpful instructions on how to install drivers for an Inkjet 900 on Windows XP (I have Vista and obviously a C4580), then she logged off before I could say anything. Upset, I called the 1-800 helpline and spent 2 hours being told to repeat everything I already did and wasting all of the photo paper I bought and went through half of my ink, only to be put on hold for the person in charge of replacements. I hope they send me one better than this one!!

What's great about it: Wireless, includes USB cable, good price
What's not so great: It uses ink when I print...really?? yeah!
I find that most people will go cheap on a printer, then complan when it uses ink! I spent $250 on an HP C7280, and with the volume of printing I do, it was well worth it! If you want lower costs in ink, spend more upfront.
The C4580 also has the option to use the 74/75XL cartirdges; three times the ink, twice the cost.
HP excels at printers, but their drivers are horrible! For wireless connection, there IS an update online to improve the connection (a HUGE difference!). The software is good/bad. It does offer great features (limited photo editing, picture layouts, designs) but it is heavy, and takes a while to install. Also, you need to turn off the daily updates. It's something I recommend on any software other than anti-virus. Otherwise you'll soon have 100 programs starting when you login and try to find updates online.
This printer was actually purchased for my 70 year-old dad. He knows his way around electronics better than most in his generation, but certainly not some of us young geeks! He was able to set it up and use it on two computers pretty quickly.

What's great about it: Excellent print quality, even on fastest setting (which is fast! B&W) Great value.
What's not so great: Setup was more envolved than others I've done and time consuming.
I'm not a novice to computers and printers, but this setup was a little more difficult then need be. After a good half hour everything was up and running fine. I guess it's a small price to pay for the great value of this printer. Did get a warning that the connection was not correct (something in the Firewall), after several attempts to correct it, I gave up and went ahead with the rest of the install (which is what took so long) anyway. Evidently there was no error as it works flawlessly. Would I buy it again ?? YES ! Very fast doing text only on the lowest setting. I 'hit' print (2 pages) and it was done before I got into the next room. Paper catcher could be a little bigger, as the sheets were on the floor.

What's great about it: Print quality good
What's not so great: Setup difficult, poor tech support, eats paper, won't scan
The first machine scanned, copied and printed reasonably well until it began chewing up paper. Nothing fixed the problem.
The second machine gave me trouble in setup. HP chat support aborted on me 3 times, eventually I got it to work. It printed well. Won't copy in black and white but does in color. It won't scan either.
I am taking it back. I need something that works and this one is 0 for 2.

What's great about it: Easy to setup and the print quality is excellent.
What's not so great: No USB included, but I can live with that.
The HP-Photo smart is excellent. I scanned a picture and reprinted it and the quality of the print was almost as good as the original. I used the Hp-Advanced paper and I believe that made a big difference. I would recommend this printer to anyone. The setup was very easy I loved the animated instructions on the LCD screen.

What's great about it: The print quality is acceptable...when it's not stuck in sleep-mode or running low on ink
What's not so great: Regularly goes into unresponsive sleep mode and eats through ink cartridges
After waiting a long time to upgrade my computer and printer I could not be more disappointed in the HP Photosmart C4580. I had no problems with the wireles setup procedures reported by some users, but my experience after that has made me think twice about buying another HP printer, ever.
As others have found, my C4580 routinely 'goes to sleep', which means it doesn't respond to a print command, hitting the printer 'on' button won't turn it on (or the screen display says 'copying'....and nothing ever happens) Usually the only way to reset it is unplug the power and plug it back in again. HP 'guided solutions' to install a new driver and internet advice saying to remove the printer from the surge protector have not fixed the problem. I haven't tried removing it from the wireless connection as some other users have suggested---I'm ready to cut my frustration short and just throw it away.
The other big beef: The C4580 sucks ink cartriges. I copy very few photos but do copy an average amount of text. I've been using up a cartridge every three weeks or so, no where near the "200 pages" of the estimated amount the cartridges are supposed to be good for and miles away from the six months I get out of my old HP 722C, still working fine by the way.
