What's great about it: Easy to set up, great price
"What brought me to this printer was it's WiFi capability. It was easy to set up to my laptop as well as the other two desktops in my home. The print quality (for not having photo paper) is really good. This printer has fit our needs perfectly."

What's great about it: Good quality - WHEN it works
What's not so great: FIrmware/software problem, printer locks up and HP hasn't fixed the problem
"This printer has a serious firmware flaw and HP has no fix for it yet. Do not buy this printer. After the printer sits idle for a period of time (may take a few hours, maybe a day or two), it freezes up and cannot be reset except to unplug it. I have had 3 sent to me already by HP who until recently refused to admit anything was wrong with the printer. Instead, after many phone calls, the customer service agent in India says they'll just send a new one. Well, 2 more have come and gone and they all have the same problem. Sure, HP is nice about sending new printers, but no one even acknowledged that they knew there was a problem. Finally, they have told me that there's a firmware/software problem and they are working on a solution... Sorry, I can't wait for it. Maybe in a few months they will work but don't buy one now. Go buy a Canon or Epson -- they work!"

Great Printer / may have to change router setting

What's great about it: Works perfect
What's not so great: No issues
"At first when my hp4580 printer went into sleep mode I had to unplug the printer to get the printer and wireless connection working again. This issue was fixed by changing a setting for my Linksys wireless router. At the router setup page for applications I added the IP Address of the printer, and now the secure connection between the router and printer remains open. This probably wastes a tiny bit of electricity, but now everything is working flawlessly."

Too much trouble to keep

What's great about it: Hmmm...it's small
What's not so great: Ink alcoholic and too many problems with wireless set up
"Printer was a disaster setting up the wireless connection. Spent hours on the phone with HP personnel who were very slow (apparently helping multiple people at once) and gave answers that did not help. Finally got wireless connection to work but the drivers took over my router connection whereby it no longer connects automatically on boot and I have to manually reconnect each time (this apparently is a somewhat common problem with HP printers). After finally getting the printer to work, I found it to be an ink alcoholic. I've never seen ink cartridges drain so fast. I gave up on this printer and returned it yesterday for an Epson Workforce 600. The Epson wireless set up on four computers quite easily and works well."

What's great about it: It works exactly like it should
What's not so great: Control panel LED lights are a bit bright at night
"I was looking to replace my 5 year old but great hp-1210 printer with a wireless printer, and the hp-4580 is just what I was hoping for. It works on all our family laptops which are both XP and Vista. During setup on the first computer it instructs you to temporarily hookup USB and then remove it, forever if you want :-). Setup on all subsequent computers can just be done wirelessly. Printing from any computer works great and just as expected, even when the printer is asleep. When scanning to a laptop you select which laptop to send the scan to via the little display on the printer. It all setup easy and there are no wires and no main server computer. Cool."

"Installation was straight forward WITHOUT any problems. Installation took about 30 minutes. Scans, prints, copy and prints photos with no problems. I did not experience any of the problems listed in other reviews of this product."

What's great about it: Really no great feature
What's not so great: It has defects
"The unit is defective in several aspects. The control panel des not operate as descrlibed in manul. Some switches do not work (ON-OFF).One must unplug power to load paper. The printer randomly just goes off line. One must unplug unit. The HP staff has not been helpful."

What's not so great: Goes off-line or into sleep mode after every other use
"Wish I would have read these reviews before purchasing this printer. I bought it with a laptop about 2 months ago. It goes off-line out of the blue after every other use or so. This makes the wireless part pointless cause I always have to run upstairs and push the button to bring it on-line. Mine also goes into sleep mode often and the only way to fix is by unplugging. The power switch doesn't even work. I'll be taking it back on Monday."

What's not so great: bad wirless never worked right
"i bought this printer because i had 3 other hp's and all were great. i wanted an all in one wireless to go with my myt macbook. apple sells the non wireless version so i assumed this would work well. it does not. i have had to constantly re configure the wireless. even bought a new "n" router thinking that would help. it didn't. have gotten no help from hp. am trying to send it back to them.
would not recommend this and advise staying away from it."

"I just bought this printer with a new laptop & got it $50 off with the laptop!!! I don't know about these other reviewers but I so far have not had any problems! Set-up was a breeze & Printing is a breeze! & yes I have Vista!! Compared to our other HP printer in the house this one has a little bit less of a print quality & prints a little bit slower overall it works great!"

What's great about it: Wireless Printing, Easy Setup w/ Software
What's not so great: 'Sleep' Issue, Long (but easy) Setup
"Bought this printer because of a recent laptop purchase. This printer worked great upon purchase although after a certain amount of time (around 24 hours) of idling, the printer would go into a sleep mode. Once that happened I had to unplug the power source to get it to respond. I contacted HP about the issue and they said that they have heard of the issue and are 'working' on a firmware update that has yet TBA. He gave me two options, wait or send it in. I ended up sending it in and received a new one very quickly and the new one does not have this issue. Great printer when it works so you decide if it is worth the hassle if you get a bad one. BTW, I noticed the problem after the return policy because i didn't set up the wireless right away. Best Buy's return policy is really nice, especially during the holidays so if the issue presents itself early, that should help avoid a lot of hassle."

"FIRST OFF....THE USB CABLE IS INCLUDED IN THE BOX.
Also...of the top, I have not had the "printer not printing" issue that some have had. When my printer goes to sleep, and I select print from my computer, the printer prints just like its supposed to. Sounds like the others might have had some hardware, software, or probably user error issues.
Install was lengthy, thanks to all the HP software nonsense that gets downloaded when you install the printer drivers, but overall it's pretty easy. Make sure you follow the directions step by step so you don't mess anything up. I didn't run into any problems, but I'm sure this is important.
I have the printer set up wirelessly, with two computers connected, and I haven't ran into any major problems at all yet. I did run into some printing orrientation issues last night. Told the printer to print in landscape, and it kept printing portrait. All I did was go into the preference settings, set it back to portrait, back to landscape, and it worked just fine. I don't think this issue was specific to this model. Probably just some glitch thing. (Hasn't come back yet).
For the money/quality comparison, this model is definitely worth it. It also looks like the inks for this printer are cheaper than most of the other HP models."

"Set up easily and works fine on our wireless network with 4 Macs (one Tiger, 3 Leopards). It also worked fine with a Dell laptop (Windows XP) from my last job.
It's very convenient to be able to do a quick copy when needed without having to scan to and print from a computer as with our old printer."

"Bought this item because I always had good experiences with HP products.
I am not really a computer geek, but I get around.
After trying for 5 hours to install the printer to my wireless network, I was only able to do so on 1 of my 3 computers at home.
I never actually got so far to use the product and to check out the printing quality.
I have now packed the product up and will return it back to the store tomorrow."

"bought the C4580 all-in-one HP printer after mostly positive reviews, wifi and small size was perfect for out of the way printing. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!!!! Once unit goes to sleep mode, will no longer print. Must manually unplug power and reinstall to network -- why even have the printer at that point? HP troubleshoot was worthless. Finally found a gazillion similar frustrated reviews at Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/TS420LL/A?), sure wish had read these reviews before waisting $130!"

"So far print quality and easy of use is on a par with Lexmark, but I've found I'm spending less on ink with this than on my Lexmark 5150. The foot print is small, too, making it an excellent choice for a home office."
