What's great about it: Nice design and interface
What's not so great: A little bit on the quiet side
Well I've had mine for a few months and haven't toasted it by leaving it plugged in all night. That's probably the computer's fault.
I mostly use mine in the car, but it's best on headphones. In my car I have to have the volume set in the mid 20's where with my ipod I only need it in the mid-teens. Not the worst problem but it's kind of annoying.
Paired with some fancy Sony headphones though it's a nice piece of equipment. I originally got it for Napster-To-Go but a couple days ago I switched to Rhapsody.
I dunno how durable it is because I keep mine in a thick, clear case from Sony.

What's great about it: Nice Features
What's not so great: Easy to crash
I had this sony mp3 player hooked up to my computer (via usb) and I forgot to unplug it before turning the computer on or off. When I tried to turn the unit on it would not power up. I sent it back to the company and they sent me a new one. Days latter I made the same mistake of leaving the mp3 player plugged in while turning the computer off and the unit crash again.
I own 3 other brand name mp3 players and I've never had this problem with them.

What's great about it: The sound quality is amazing!
What's not so great: No Wi-Fi capabilities, Proprietary USB cable.
This is a great Walkman. I got one because My parents both had one and they love theirs. The FM players is also very good. The interface is so easy to use and it works great with Windows Media Player. The sound is not as good as the Sony Walkman A816 but add a pair of bass boosting earbuds and it is the best. The screen, the multi-format video player, and the picture viewer rock! The only thing it is missing is the Wi-Fi capabilities. Higher end players can get music and other things off the internet wirelessly, but this can't. Oh, well what more can you ask for at this price, plus I got the 8GB at a $20 dollar price match discount for a total of $79.90. Now that's a real bang for your buck!

What's great about it: Not a thing
What's not so great: Worthless
I am fairly knowledgeable with computers but for some reason I was not able to download music to the windows player or the Sony player using a Sony computer. It took four days of working to try to load this unit. Nothing worked and appeared to be the software. Sony web page was no help. Took it back.

What's great about it: Easy To Use, Battery Lasts a LONG TIME, Durable
What's not so great: Earbuds that come with it are not to great
I have had this product for about a week and a half now, I have dropped it 3 times, one of those times i dropped it onto a tile floor, another onto the pavement, and yet another into a deep sink at work full of dishes and it got wet, it has yet to scratch and still works like the day I bought it.
Bring it home, plug it into the computer, if you are using Windows Media Player, the first time you plug it in it will add every song you have in your library into your MP3. It takes a while the first time around, but after that any other songs add very quickly.
Battery has lasted well over 35 hours now and is still not half dead. Features a FM Radio, not the greatest Quality Radio, but its there.
Any Play-lists you have on your computer get pre-set into the MP3 as a play-list, already titled...
Only Recommendation is to get a new set of headphones, the earbuds have decent quality, but its not great.

What's great about it: good price, loooong battery life, small and portable and easy to use
What's not so great: havent really found anything yet
i just bought the 8GB mp3 a few weeks ago and am soooo happy with it! i was reading all of the reviews about this mp3 player and comparing it wit the ipods and had to go with sony. it seemed like people were having problems with their ipods freezing or just acting up on them and my sister actually has one that goes on the fritz on and off so i couldn't do it. but the price was good compared to the ipods and im not a big fan of touch so the arrow navigation is a plus for me. but overall it's nice, small, easy to use, stores alot of music, affordable and puts a smile on my face :).......oh yea n the only thing i wish it had was a clip. u can buy the arm band but i'd prefer my hip. so im in the process of gettin the hard plastic or soft sillicon protector n somehow attaching a clip to it. im an artsy-creative n hands on kinda chick so we'll see how that goes n i'll keep u guys posted :)

Great little device. Compatible with most players and your not just stuck to one player for life. Rapsody is great and so is the bestbuy music software. Purchased the silicone sleeve for this and have had no problems at all. Going to buy another one just for my gym workouts. Great bang for your buck

What's great about it: This mp3 player beats an Ipod hands down in my opinion.
What's not so great: The unit I purchased didn't come with a wall charger or protective screen film..Belt holsters are also seperate.
Pros: This mp3 player beats an Ipod hands down in my opinion. It does not restrict you to the use of Itunes to organize and transfer your music which is a huge plus. Simply drag and drop from Windows Explorer and your music is there on the player.
Cons: Would have been nice to have a AC power supply come bundled, it is an optional accessory. Hard case is hard to find but can be obtained from the Sony Store site for $30. And an angled head phone plug on the head phones would be a major plus.
Summary: I am pleased with the purchase, as I don't much care for Apple's overwhelming and over bearing desire to control how I listen to my music and on what I choose to listen to my music on. The Sony 8 GB I bought tosses off the chains of such Big Brother attitudes that are portrayed by Apple.
Other than the minor cons of no AC power provided with the player and the straight instead of an angled plug on the provided headphones, I have no encountered an issue yet. I don't have a massive collection of mp3's so I am no where near the 8 GB limit. The other thing I like about this player is that it is using a flash memory chip and not a hard drive, what does that mean to the user? Simply put should you accidentally drop the player you have less chance of messing up the data on the player as there is no moving parts, unlike an Ipod that uses a hard drive. This also means a lot better battery life than the Ipod. I recommend getting the hard case for this player just in case it is accidentally dropped or if you are like me doing outdoor work that involves a rugged case to make sure it survives the work day. The sound on this player is superb, and exactly what I would expect from a quality Sony product, however it is made in Malaysia and not in Japan. The display is crisp and looks amazing, though myself I would not watch videos on it but one could if they should choose to do so without any issue.
The player has energy saving enabled; the screen doesn't constantly stay on while playing your music sucking your battery life away like other players ... like the Ipod. This is good as it means you might actually get the suggested 33 hours of continuous play that Sony claims you can get from this player.
Like other players the Sony NWZ-E438F does have some limitations on file types, MP3, AAC, WMA, and Linear PCM are the audio choices; WMV, MPEG-4 and AVC are the video choices and for pictures only JPEG.
Firmware can be updated via the Update Program, thus allowing new features to be added to the player. However there is no manner in which to expand the flash memory as there is no method to plug in an external memory stick or any other type of flash memory, would have been a nice feature but not a necessity.
There is a FM tuner built in to the player if for some reason you have grown tired of listening to your MP3 library, or if you need to catch the news, this player will allow you to do that. The radio turner allows you to create presets so you can quickly find your favorite radio stations.
This MP3 player has an equalizer that allows you to make adjustments to the sound of your music, there are several presets provided in addition to the two Custom settings where you can make your own preset.
Menu navigation is a breeze, most people should be able to figure out how to use this player within a couple of minutes. The menu is similar to that on modern cell phones making it clean and easy to use.
For under $100 + tax the Sony NWZ-E438F provides an excellent alternative to the Apple Ipod especially for those with less than 8 GB of music and don't want to be constricted by Itune

What's great about it: Battery Life, Price
I had an iPod about 5 years ago, and after that a Zune. I definitely like this Sony Walkman more than either of those. I really didn't like the Zune software, and the Sony uses Windows Media Player, which is very easy. The sound is very good, with equalizer options to customize it to your liking. The headphones included seem like they will not last very long, but for now, they're very comfortable. In the "Now Playing" section, it displays the song title, album title, album art, artist name, genre, and release year. This is very nice, and not available on the Zune or iPod that I had. This is only the first day that I've had it, so I haven't had experience with the battery life, but it is supposed to be about 50 hours of playback on one charge. This is about double what most other mp3 players! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a new mp3 player. The price is very reasonable (on sale for 89.99 for 8 GB) and the quality is amazing!

What's great about it: It holds a lot of music and east to download music on to it.
What's not so great: How to make a playlist, can't have another song lined up to play
It is a good mp3 player for what it costs. It holds a lot of music. It does scratch pretty easily so I recommend a protector. It was pretty difficult how to make a playlist on it and I do not like how you can't have a song lined up to play when there is already a song playing. It takes you back to that screen.

What's great about it: battery life, ease of use, screen
What's not so great: nothing
I've had this for several months. I get 35-40 hours of use on a single charge. It integrates flawlessly with WMP11. Sounds great with aftermarket earbuds. The controls are easy to use and a treat, much easier than the Creative Zen vPlus that I replaced.
Some people are confused about the ability to fast forward. You can fast forward (slowly) during playback. If you PAUSE during playback, you get a FAST fast forward. Very easy, very practical...maybe not completely intuitive.
It feels solid, sounds great, is reasonably priced. (I have the 8gig black, from Best Buy on sale.)

What's great about it: 8GB Memory, Easy to use, Battery life, Durability
What's not so great: No delete on the fly, Weird shuffle
Pros: 8GB Memory for cheap, very easy to use, long battery life, good durability with flash drive and solid construction. Also clear screen and easy interface with Windows Media player.
Cons: My old player had the ability to delete any song right on the player rather than go through your computer, this one doesn't allow that. Also as one other reviewer stated, every time you shuffle it starts out with the same song- slightly annoying, but you can just forward through that one and it shuffles randomly after that.

I love this thing! Im not so great with loading music and all that, but this MP3 is so easy to use, and so convienant! I love it! It comes with many Gigs for the price, FM, videos, pics... what else could you want without having an ipod! After realizing how great the product was we bought many, especially after the bad experiances we had with other brands with 8G, those were horrible, theres no comparisson, Sony 8G MP3 wins by a landslide!

Overall it's a great player. Sounds good, has good battery life, easy to use (except Media Player really s*cks), great size. I just wish it came with a hard case and/or a belt clip. It's impossible to find a decent case for it. I would buy it again though, it's pretty cool.

What's great about it: No nonsense file transfer, easy access of songs, videos and photos, FM, Good battery life
What's not so great: No file deleting and playlist creation directly on the device.
The Sony Walkman MP3 NWZ-E438F is extremely sleek, and packs a punch when it comes to ease of file transfer; it just loads up as a USB stick would, and all you need to to is to copy your files to the appropriate device on the device. This is great for people like me, who avoid proprietary audio software like the plague. The user interface is good, though a delete feature would have been very nice. FM is a big plus, since I do like to tune into FM stations once in a while. Most importantly, the audio and video playback is, to my ears (and eyes) at least, crystal clear, and this player serves my limited needs very well.

What's great about it: for the price its an awesome deal
What's not so great: scratches easily
I love this little device. My only complaint is that even when I lock it it manages to unlock itself while in my purse so that when I go to use it I realize that its been on for twelve straight hours and is ready to die. So I just have to be super careful not to toss it randomly into any bag. Otherwise it's great. Good price, easy enough to use, good quality. Love it!

i got this mp3 player a year and a couple months ago and i really liked it. It had all the basic features a mp3 player should have. I liked how if you paused a song for like a minute it would turn off to save the battery. It had a decent battery life. I liked it until it broke last week . none of the buttons were working and when i plugged it into the computer, the computer didnt reconize it. now i am shopping for a new mp3 player and im actually thinking about getting a zune.

What's great about it: Ease of use.
What's not so great: Haven't had time to explore all of the player yet, but so far nothing.
This Sony Walkman is so much better than the Sansa I had. I just bought it on Monday. It is just easier to navigate. Someone wrote a review saying the back cover started to curl up. All I can say is, it had to have been left on the dashboard or on something hot to do so as I don't see how that would just lift up from playing. Also someone wrote in that it wasn't compatible with Rhapsody. My Sansa came from Best Buy preloaded with Rhapsody and I finally got around to plugging it into Rhapsody today and it has let me download all the songs I bought onto it without a hitch. I know there are reports of freezing and other things but I was also smart enough to pay Best Buy the $10.99 for a 2 year contract to protect myself against such things. I love this player. I had heard the volume wasn't loud enough but I guess if you want your eardrums blown off you would want something else. This has exceptional volume. I enjoy my ears and I also like to listen to my music a little louder than normal and this is perfect. I can't say enough good about this little gem. Sony continues to offer good products.
