What's great about it: Easy to use

"i love the garmin!!! have owned two tom toms and this is the best by far!!! 1. easy set up 2. big bright menu's 3. user friendly, not hard to figure out what is where 4. got it on sale, great price for what you get 5. the most important thing was that you can zoom in and out really easy and then when you do zoom out it shows the interstates and highways around you, not like the tom tom's over sensitive zoom that doesnt show you the highways and interstates when you zoom out, this garmin doesnt have lane assist BUT if you look at the top of the screen it shows you which lane to stay in anyways. AND lane assist is NOT offered every where, not even with tom tom it only works here and there so ill just take the arrows at the top of the screen for now, also doesnt have the live traffic update, but from what ive read isnt always that accurate, but you can get the traffic wire for $100 bucks thats the only difference between the 255W and 255WT. the txt to speech is nice it announces the street that is coming up to turn on, and at night it announces the street still but it still tells you to turn right/left so you shouldnt miss your turn.
6. recaculating is pretty fast about the same as tom tom
7. you CAN make your own itiniary by saving your points in your favorites just save one point at a time, and if you really need a specific address, you can go to google maps and map one address at a time, then click send and then save it to your gps plug it in and its saved to your gps under favorites, then you can catagorize it!!!
the con: the battery life doesnt seem to last too long, but for me thats cool cause it will just get plugged into my car.
the con: its not always 100% accurate might put me close (most of the time it is right though), especially if theres construction, but that is the same for my tom toms"

"My previous Garmin was stolen and I replaced it with a Tom Tom which I really didn't care for that much but it got me by until last weekend when I had to go to a wedding at a ski lodge in Park City. The Tom Tom directed me to a location miles from the lodge in the middle of nowhere! Yesterday I purchased another Garmin and breathed a sigh of relief. Everything about the Garmin is great with the exception of having to purchase a USB cable to download updates."

"A sleek product with all you need to go on the road. I used this product recently - driving from Wisconsin Dells to Gurnee, Illinois. First we suspected whether I gave the address correct as we found ourselves on new roads. We stopped somewhere and checked the address. The device took us to the spot we wanted to go within the estimated time of arrivlal.
Great device for the price."

"i bought this gps about 3 weeks ago, i have tried to go with shortest route and this gps taking me from way longer route
but still its not so bad i would buy another Garmin gps because i believe Garmin is better gps than TOM TOM and others."

"Great price! great Garmin for it's price. Features are simple and easy to use. Connect to Garmin website and DL current maps. One of the best things about this product is that you can Edit all locations with your own pictures. I bought it without the Bluetooth because i'm waiting till they perfect the backround noise reduction. I read really bad reviews about it. So i decide to buy this one instead and I am very pleased!"

"I purchased this model for Las Vegas Death Valley Great Canyon trip. And I have to say that with this GPS everything went fine, no problems with find all kind of road, even that small sand road was on the map ;),
Garmin web site make me crazy because web script is slow, but after few times I did firmware and map upgrade.
Sometimes inside the city (Chicago or LasVegas) this GPS kept me on other next road until I did turn.
It is nice to have free car icon and funny voices from Garmin website.
I will recommend this product at all."

"This is a great unit. I have another 550 Garmin, great, too, with more features (don't make it anymore). I tried a Tomtom XL 330. It tried to take me home on a route twice as far and long as necessary, wouldn't correct when I didn't follow, kept going back long way home. It wouldn't even find a WalMart (we have about 6 in our city). Menu was impossible so I returned it and got the Garmin 255W. It took the short way home, found all WalMarts, so it passed the test. I'm keeping this one. My wife has the other Garmin. This one is wide model, and thinner."

"This GPS is awesome, but somewhat irrelevant now. You can get the same GPS quality on your cell phone or Ipod. If you do get this, it helps a lot in major cities you've never been in. It takes a while to 'acquire satelites' and if you get lost or take a wrong turn, it takes a while to find current location and alternate routes. I recommend just getting a GPS feature on your ipod or cell phone though."

"I bought the 255w package for my wife just before she went on a trip from Milwaukee to Columbus, Ohio. She isn't very techie and she said it was very easy to use. She is very happy with it.

The speaking feature is a must have for safety. You don't have to look at it for directions while driving. It even speaks destination names. We used the bean bag mount included in the package. It doesn't move at all.

The second car power cable is kind of a cheesy inclusion. If you're going to move the whole thing (GPS and mount) to a different car, how hard is it to take the cable with?"

"After researching a lot of GPS devices I decided on this one because of the high customer ratings; which were right on! I got this for a trip to the San Francisco Bay Area. Since I have absolutely no sense of direction I was a bit leery of trying to find my way around and to all the different places I was going. Even if this was the only time I used this Garmin it was worth every penny (though I know I will use it all the time)! I like having the box in the upper left to let you know how far and what side of the road your next exit or destination is on, also gives you an arrival time. The text to speech is great as is the larger screen! Was accurate and simple to use; I programmed in all the addresses of my destinations before leaving home and with just a touch I had directions. I went places I have never been to before and never worried about being lost. I am already planning my next road trip thanks to this device!
It did come with a USB cable so I was able to make sure it was updated and load the free icons into it. I had Best Buy hard wire it in my truck and that was worth the small extra charge; I can still take it out and move it to my husband's truck.
This is the first GPS I have owned but would recommend this to anyone looking for one."

"i looked at other expensive gps but settled for this one. And I'm glad I did. It gives you accurate street names, voice is clear and easy to understand. The functions are easy to follow. It does have mp3 player and other fancy gadgets which I don't need. I have learned that more fancier stuff, the more stuff to break. This thing does what i want and that is get me to point A to point B correctly."

What's great about it: I love the way the street names are spoken! Never had that feature on my old gps.
What's not so great: The ETA is about 10 minutes off. That is cool. As long as it gets me to point B.

"I bought this GPS last week and it works great! The touch-screen feature allows you to browse locations without having to manually punch in addresses by hand. It is very good for long distance driving. You can't miss a beat without speaking the street names! You will never get lost with the Garmin 255W Package. Go buy it !"

"This is my third GPS unit. I had a Tom Tom One and then gave that to my son when I got the Nuvi 350. I loved that unit, and wasn't ready to give it up, but my daughter needed one so I upgraded. I love this. It's great that you can see your speed and the speed limit on the screen. You can see your turns coming up on the map early enough to be able to change lanes in advance. The color is awesome. I like that you can give Icons to your favorites, and add pictures also. I've only had it one day and I love it already."

"This is an upgrade of what I had before, loved my old one it was black and white. This is a lot better, if you need traffic info. this is not for you, but there is the detour option which gives you an alternate route so I didn't need that traffic info. which is more money."

What's great about it: Downloadable maps, Re-routing, comes with USB cable.

"Iv had this product for a few months now, works very well on city streets and re-routes works fantasticly. The packaging does not say that a USB cable is included, but it is in there. I use this primarly for my car so I am not walking around with it using up its battery life.

I highly reccomend buying the NuMaps for life, it is a bit pricey but you will have updated maps for life. The GPS is a tad off on the location by around 25ft, but the screen display shows your location relative to the roads and you can figure out where you are. It gives turn by turn instructions, there is also a icon on the left upper corner that tells you which way the next turn is, and in how many miles/feet so you can get over in the correct lane before that next turn.

If you just need a GPS sysem and not some fancy music player, phone, or any other unneeded device, this is the one to go with."

"Right out of the box, this is a great GPS. Is simple to use, easy to understand and will get you to where you are going very easily. Tell it where to take you, and you're on your way. The display is sharp, crisp and easy to see in all lighting conditions. The voice navigation (spoken street names) is easy to follow and understand, once you have decided on the best 'voice' for you.

I have never had a problem reaching a destination, other than the maps not being updated due to closed businesses, etc. but you can update your device from Garmin, but they charge you a fee after your first device update. To me, that doesn't seem quite fair on Garmin's part, and the updates are pricey.

The Nuvi 255w has a great display, is easy to use and would make a good gift for someone who has never used a GPS."

"easy to use straight out of box, clear instructions with names of streets, love the car symbol. I have a gps bought it from QVC, it was ok, but it did dot speek the street names and when you are traveling places that you are unfamilar with you want to hear names of streets. I love my new gps. I am giving the one from qvc to my sister. this was a treat for my self and I love it. and the case fits perfect with it. also I Love the bean bag which sits on the dash board and mount the gps on it, gps is so secure. I paid $299 for mine, it came with so many things. the only thing I wish it would of came with a ac adapter. I know you can purchase seperatly, I like to add places in the house and different things. just have to make sure I charge it in car good. Thanks, you wont be dissapointed."

"This was my first GPS and have used it about 1 month now. It was very easy to use right out of the box. After reading reviews of all different brands and models, I decided on this unit because I wanted text to speech and good quick satellite reception. The unit is very quick to find where I am when it first turns on (averages 10 seconds). If I install, then turn on, by the time I get past the 'agree' screen the unit has found our location. (the agree screen is annoying. it says that I am agreeing to not use or look at while driving, or something like that) The 255w remembers where I last turned it off, so it seems to look for satellites in the last know location which speeds it up. I was surprised at how many points of interest it has. Alomst everything I searched for was found by spelling the name, or by category. I like the feature that shows recently found locations. As someone who uses to go from house to house, I can input the locations before leaving, then go to recently found, press the next lcoation, press go, and it tells me how to get there.
Another nice feature is the trip recorder. If I want to record how many miles and how long it took me to travel (for record keeping) I can reset the 'trip odometer' before leaving and recall when finished.
Something I found that I did not think I would need is the posted speed. I was travelling on an interstate over the weekend that went from 70mph to 65 to 60 to 55 and back and forth. The speed limit is right on my gps screen all the time on highways and some of the time on local roads. It is easy to watch your speed on the gps right next to the speed limit.
I can't emphasize how good the reception is. I do not even mount on my windshield. I mount the gps on a flat smooth part BELOW my radio and above the gear shift. This is still easy to see when needed and the text to speech reduces the amount of time I need to look at it.
This is fun."
