What's great about it: Regza Link, 1080p up conversion acceptable
What's not so great: XDE circuit pixilated, Divx playback dissapoints

"I purchased this unit as my last standard DVD player. I am not ready to sink money into a BluRay until it has all the features I want at a price that I feel is reasonable. I choose this Player because I own a Toshhiba 42" REGZA and was looking to replace an aging DVD that already upconverted to 1080i. Also I wanted a unit that played Divx files.
I found that the XDE circuit would cause very obvious pixilation on whatever I played. I tried turning off the Sharpen feature which seemed to correct that problem. However it seems that I have to turn it off every time I turn unit on. With that feature disabled the image is smooth and clear. A very satisfactory image.
I was very pleased with the REGZA Link feature. It was very obvious the moment I hooked it up to the TV that the two units were communicating with each other and that the control of both units was very simplified, with no programming of remotes or manual adjustments of either unit required. I big plus in my opinion.
I am not entirely satisfied with the compatibility of Divx files. On attempting to play a file I found thta the picture itself was fine however playback was somewhat jerky."

What's great about it: Easy Set-Up, satisfactory performance. You get what you pay for.
What's not so great: The player stopped working after 3.5 weeks and Toshiba's Customer Service is well below standard and apathetic.

"Hello, I hope this finds you well.

Please consider the quality of the product and the slow and inattentive customer service when looking into this product.

I bought this in November and in December it was no longer working (4 weeks). I have to return it with Toshiba not Best Buy per Toshiba. At first, the product performed decently and then took on a life of its own. After a week and a half of owning this player, it started to turn itself on and interrupt the TV (my TV is auto detect when a signal is sent to it). The remote was stored out of sight and nothing else could explain this. Then after a few weeks, it would no longer light up all the way on the panel and would not send a signal to the TV not matter which way I connected it to the TV. So, then I call the help desk. I was on hold forever waiting to talk with a customer service agent. Once connected, the typical diagnosis proved to be worthless and then they said that there was nothing more that they can do so send it in for a trade. I thought that this was ok but odd since it was only a month old. So, I explained this to him and after about 30 minutes or so, he gave me free shipping and said once I send it in, I will get my new one in 7 days. Well, now it has been 3 weeks since I have done that and still no DVD player. I just got off the phone with them and come to find out, they closed that warehouse for the holidays from 22 December though 5 January. Nothing happens until they get back on the 5th of January, so, my DVD player is somewhere in the mix waiting for human assistance. I spoke with the agent then with a supervisor. This is all they can do:

Once open on 5 January, they will process my request (since they were not able to do it the week before they closed) and send me my new one or I can wait 4-6 weeks (from the 5th of January) for a refund. So, now I understand my position with them after several hours on the phone and I opt for the replacement.

I understand that this is wordy and my experience, but I want to ensure that you understand the flavor of this product and company. The product is ok while it works, but not great. The panel is colorful and the set-up is straight forward and simple, but the picture and operation are standard. I chose to go cheaper and received exactly that.

Choose wisely and have a great year."

What's great about it: XDE circuit upconverts with smoother picture, fewer artifacts, great picture quality
What's not so great: awful owner's manual, cheesy remote

"The XDE circuot does its job to reduce to near zero upconversion artifacts; very smooth picture on standard DVD. If you are buying your last DVD player and don;t want to spend a fortune, this is your DVD player.

Remote could be better, and the owner;s manual is terrible. Other wise, it's a great machine."

Great Player   12/19/2008
By Anonymous Reviewer from Appleton, WI

What's great about it: Enhanced DVD image on large screen HDTV, plays all types of media well
What's not so great: Nothing that I can tell

"This player does what it's supposed to. Picture quality is near HD levels. Far superior to older progressive scan. Plays without stutter. I'm happy with it, which is saying a lot."

What's great about it: picture/sound
What's not so great: price to quality ratio

"It is a decent player, picture and sound quality is good - not great. It is pricey - for that $$$ I would do the Pioneer up-covert and pocket the difference."

What's great about it: Great picture and sound quality on Plasma 1080p TV
What's not so great: Remote could be better

"We purchased this after reading the CNet review of the product. After hooking it up to my HDTV, I was not disappointed. We have another upconvert DVD and this one provides much better picture and sound output. We have a large investment in non HD / BR DVDs and they all look exceptional. From kiddie shows and animation to the latest action adventure. We not even bother to invest in a BR player for now. If you purchase this unit you will not be disappointed. The only down side I have seen in this unit is its remote. Its layout could be better to provide better functionality. Luckily you can always program one of your other remotes to do most of the features you would need."

What's great about it: It does everything it says it will
What's not so great: cant even dream of any

"I was tired of buying the cheaper ones with all the hype so I took a chance and spent a little more on this one with the XDE hype. I really am beside myself on how good this player performs it anit bd/hd but I think its as close as you can get for this kind of money. I was going to use it just as a little brother to a Blu(not bought yet) and now Im thinking maybe just scrap the BD and use this one exclusively.Couldnt any be happier with this choice, WOW!!!!!"

What's great about it: Oustanding video quality
What's not so great: 4:3 Aspect ratio doesn't work correctly

"I finally decided to by the Toshiba XDE-E500 DVD player, and I must admit I am very pleased with my purchase. First of all I own a 32" LG 1080i LCD TV and I also own a 50" Samsung DLP Projection TV.

I tried the unit out on both sets with more than acceptable results. The unit is extremely light and the XDE emblem lights up a dark room, but not enough to be distracting. I turned it on the background screen was very sharp and clear.
I put in a dvd of the Transformers movie and was amazed at the sharp quality, I also noticed that the textures were really pronounced. I own a Toshiba HD-DVD player with a copy of the HD version of the Transformers movie and noticed the sharpness was very close. The dvd version of the Transformers was slightly less sharp than the HD-Version, the difference was so small that most people would find it hard to tell the difference.
I then tried a dvd of the Married With Children Season Series, and noticed that the sharpness setting showed some noise in the picture due to the movie film effect. Still the images were sharp and clear, it actually made the picture stand out more.
The Three functions are sharpen, color and contrast. The sharpen function is always on (unless you deselect it in the settings menu). In other words you can select the color enhancement and the sharpen feature is automatically initialized.
Lastly I tried a DivX movie and it also looked very sharp and clear.
The unit seems to enhance the textured areas and sharpen the hard edges, This gives a strong 3D type feel and is worth a try if you are considering this unit.
My only complaint is the aspect ratio only shows in widescreen (even though there is a selection for 4:3), you would have to use the TV's controls to just the aspect ratio. This is why I gave the unit 4 stars.
I am happy with the purchase and look forward to checking out more dvds I own."

Cheaper than building a new (Blu-Ray) library!   09/15/2008
By CaliforniaKid from Santa Maria, CA

What's great about it: Animated movies close to Blu-Ray (HD) quality. Excellent sound. Improvement in video on all standard def DVDs.
What's not so great: None

"With close to 700 standard def DVD movies I wasn't about to start investing in Blu-Ray. The Toshiba XD-E500 offered an excellent "bridge" to let me continue enjoying my SD DVDs with only the $150 outlay for now. (Can you imagine how many $ to replace 680 movies with Blu-Ray? LOL) My previous player is a Momitsu V-880 which we've had for about 4 years. It's been an excellent performer but is beginning to show its age. Compared to the XD-E500 there is no comparison. The image enhancing capability of the Toshiba really works! You should see Ice Age, The Incredibles, etc. No kidding. You would think it WAS Blu-Ray at 1080p! It really is that good. You won't be disappointed with the XD-E500."
