What's great about it: Best picture, ease of use, reliability, and a current fair price
What's not so great: Because of so many children out there falling asleep at the movies these dont hold up to the abuse of beingleftonallday!
This is the best dvd player I have ever owned. It was recomended to me at a store almost 2 years ago at half of its price which I thought 75 dollars was alot for dvd player. That was a close-out price, sealed box last one, because they were putting the new model in that place. We have a blue-ray player on our computer, and this dvd player on our 50 inch plasma upstairs, an extremely large LCD computer monitor with hdmi, and that dvd player up converts our tv upstairs to a picture that makes blue-ray technology look like childs play with its xde technology. I started looking for one for my parents as they are starting to consider to stepping into the 21st century. We have not had any problems with ours, and I am still hoping that I will be able to find this item when it comes time for them to make that purchase. This item is the best, and I think dvd players just get used and abused. People fall asleep with them on and that is what causes them to go out. A laser is like a light bulb. If you leave it on for-ever it will burnout.

What's great about it: Price is enticing
What's not so great: It will break down in the first month of use
Mine is a common experience. Decent machine, great picture, easy navigation, but what's the point IF IT BREAKS DOWN IN LESS THAN 30 DAYS? AVOID THIS ITEM UNLESS YOU ARE TRYING TO PURCHASE A SLEEK, KUBRICKIAN PAPERWEIGHT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. BEST BUY, please send the rest of your stock on this item to the junk yard.

What's great about it: Excellent Upconvert Picture Quality
What's not so great: This DVD is poorly made and will break down within 1 year.
I purchased this player earlier this year and thought the upconvert picture quality was the best I've seen outside of the high end upconverts. As I was doing the research I noted that alot of people complained about how the player would suddenly stop working and just show a bunch of jumbled green pixels. I ignored these bad reviews and purchased the player anyway. To my dismay, tonight was the night the player bit the dust. Right in the middle of a movie the screen turned into a green pixelated mess and my player is pretty much shot. So if I can give any advice - DO NOT buy this player. The quality of this product is BAD. Toshiba needs to get their act together because they are turning away alot of loyal customers with this highly defective product. The only silver lining is that this model has been discontinued with a newer model being released - the XDE 600.

What's not so great: It died after less than 90 days.
I guess you really do get what you pay for but this DVD died in under 90 days which was totally unexpected. I've had other Toshiba DVD's that have been very good buys and have lasted well but I don't recommend this machine. Spend a bit more and get something that will last.

What's not so great: nothing
I've had this dvd player for a few months. It works really well, for the price and quality of picture. Forget Blu-ray. Why recollect your movies when you can keep using your dvd's that upconvert nicely.

What's great about it: upconversion
What's not so great: older dvds
I've read a lot of reviews about the XD-E500, and I don't know if people are trying to use the dvd player under water or what. I've never had any problems with it, I've had it for well over a year now, and it is the best UpConverter I've ever used. The extended detail enhancements are sometimes usefull, but the overall picture quality is why you should buy this machine. The only problem is that if you have an older dvd, sometimes it will have some studder, but newer dvds with a relatively high bit rate look wonderful. Just my 2 cents. I've very happy with my purchase.

What's great about it: Decent upconverted picture
What's not so great: Stops working after warranty period ends
I bought this last Christmas 2008 for $110. The unit had some irritating problems from the get go. It would occasionally glitch up, freeze etc, but the overall picture quality was admittedly, very good. Unfortunately, after 6 months the unit stopped working. The audio would play but the entire screen turned into a "pixilated" green with some splashes of yellow thrown in. We could not get it to work. I removed it, threw it in the trash and bought a Sony. Stay away from this hunk of junk. Toshiba used to be a player but their quality has gone down the DRAIN. I am very disappointed. This unit listed for $149 just 6 months ago and now they are less than $70 bucks. Should tell you something right there.

What's great about it: When it works the picture is okay.
What's not so great: Stops working after a few weeks.
This is the worst experience I have ever had with a consumer electronics product! I bought this DVD player in late December 2008 at Best Buy for $99. I had trouble with the picture freezing and "pixelating" almost from the start. The unit stopped working completely after 3 weeks of infrequent useage. I exchanged the unit for a new one at Best Buy. The new unit worked for about two months before it too stopped working completely. I called the 866 Toshiba number and they agreed to exchange it for another new unit. I shipped the broken player back (thank goodness I kept the box) and received a new unit within two weeks (overall not a bad customer service experience). The new unit worked without a hitch until last week when it too stopped working! I called the 866 Toshiba number again but was unable to connect with a human being. When I called another toll free number for Toshiba, I talked to a real person but he told me he worked in another division and was unable to help me. He gave me the 866 number I already had called. When I said I was unable to talk to anyone on that number, he confirmed that the number was completely automated (I guess they learned it was better to hide from customers in the two months since my earlier experience). He suggested I email Toshiba customer service which I have done requesting a full refund but have not received a reply. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! The unit is still under warranty but there is no one to contact to exercise my rights. In summary, I have had three new Toshiba XD-E500 DVD players in a row, all of which broke within two months and now there is no live customer service to contact! Don't buy this unit!

What's great about it: Very easy to set up and use. Good picture quality with a HDTV
What's not so great: In 6 months, the unit malfunctioned and would not play DVDs.
I spent 10 years with my previous DVD player before it died. This Toshiba was its replacement. While it was easy to set up and took advantage of my HDTV (something my previous player did not do), this unit failed to function in less than 6 months. I don't care how good the picture quality is if the unit isn't playing DVDs. Simply put, if I have to spend $$ on a new unit, the value just is not there. So, while this unit had the features I wanted, it might be best for me to return to the other brand.

I'm normall not the type to cheap out on anything. I believe you get what you pay for and this was a good example. I was a sucker for the nice display they had set up for this unit. I'm not sure if the upconverter ever worked. I watched a couple of movies over a period of two days. On the third day, during a movie, green pixle shift appeared. We tried several different movies and all connections with no luck. It's going back today!

What's not so great: That you are paying for just a few month of use.
I bought this DVD player in Nov 2008, it stop working today...exactly four months and 5 days after purchased....what a waste of money. Is pure junk, no matter how nice the pictures are and how nice it look in the store keep in mind that you will pay almost $80.00 for a few months of use....that's it!!!!
I will definitely do not recomend this product. keep away from it, and don't waste your money.

What's great about it: Ease of set up, can be made multi regional, nice upconversion for the money
What's not so great: cheesy remote, poor user guide, limited options for picture
I bought this product this past January for the principal purpose of having a backup to my Oppo-983H. I have been pleasently surprised by its performance and value. The enhancement is better than most, and that includes another Oppo that I own, the 971. It is easy to make multi regional, and I have used it in my extensively bedroom. Since i have many Region 2 discs, and I have many "home made" DVD's, I have found that the picyure is quite exceptional. This player is not Blu-Ray, but it is one of the best upconverting detail enhancement players that you can get for the money. again, it is not as good as my Oppo-983, but then again the XDE does not run $399.00 either. However, it is as good as my Oppo 971, and it is better than my Panny.
In terms of audio, i am running this through a Yamaha A/V which i have had for two years, and the sound is better than my Panny, which is only a year old. There have been no drop outs.
If you have an extensive SD/DVD collection, this is a good upconvert player to get. I know that some consumers have had problems, but mine is better than i expected it to be.
