What's great about it: Easy to use and idiot proof
What's not so great: I didn't buy one sooner!

"I shopped around for weeks checking features, price, and ease of use. I heard great things about this unit and everything I heard was true. This is very easy to use and set up. I am a manual reader normally but was not necessary for this GPS. I used it the very first day and you could not get lost having this little buddy in your car. Once you program your destination there is no reason to even look at it as "Samatha" tells you EXACTLY where to go. I don't know why I didn't buy one sooner as I am very directionally challenged."

What's great about it: I am new to town. This saves me miles and miles of confusion!
What's not so great: Sometimes just decides not to show you your route.

"Some jerk broke in my car and stole my Nuvi 200.

I had no choice but to replace, and decided to go with this model.

This GPS has led me across the country countless times. Sitting in LA, I can program in my NYC apartment address and the garmin only takes a few seconds to figure out my route home.

This unit tells you the speed limit as you go and the speed of your vehicle. It also logs a trip summary and mileage summaries.

Overall, its cool. It gets you where you have to go without the hassle of asking for directions, or printing a mapquest map.

It is super simple to punch in addresses. And its even easier to get home (just hit the home button!)

The one annoying thing is when someone gets in the car and doesnt "trust" the GPS and wants to give you directions. I guess this is more of a personal problem :)"

"This is our second Garmin. I bought it because, it seemed when I needed it, my husband had it miles away, so I got my own.
Actually I have to return it and get a different one, I cannot seem to get it to power-up. I think it is a defective one.
But, I am returning and replacing with another one just like it.
I love our Garmin, it is very hard to get lost with it."

"This gps is a cheap, but good gps. its not for everywhere though sometimes it messed up when i wasnt in or around my state it would get confused, but its not the best. Its ease of use is a big advantage it was like it was made for 3rd graders. The bad thing is that it has no qwerty keyboard and that takes a lot of time to get use to, but overall its good for getting around the state for sports or buisness meetings."

"I love the Garmin nüvi 255 GPS - I noticed that a lot of people do not like it if you miss a turn, it tells you to take a u-turn - I shut that feature off. If I miss a turn, I do not want to cause an accident by trying to find where to make a u-turn anyway. I just kept going and it recalculated the route by taking me to the next exit ,or road. It is easy to add destinations to your trip without changing your final destination. I bought it the day before my daughter had a volleyball tournament in Indianapolis - it was so great! I felt like I knew the city! We used it to find places to eat, movie theators, and I since had some major car problems, I used it to find a place to fix my car with ease. Each day the tournament was at a different location (and we never knew where until the day before)- I was never nervous that she would be late (or me lost)- it calculates the estimated time of arrival so I always knew when to leave (it cannot guarantee what traffic is like - but you never know that anyway). I attach it to my windshield and it does not obscure my view and does not distract me from my driving."

What's great about it: It eventually gets you to your destination
What's not so great: Makes unnecessary turns, and gets confused.

"After some researching I decided to go purchase the Garmin NUVI 255 this weekend. I was really excited and started using it right away (more like testing it out). It was super easy, however, it doesn't take the more direct route and a lot of times, it gives a round about way. I decided to follow the directions just to see how accurate it was, like I said, "It gets you there, however, there are a lot of unnecessary turns involved". I used it a few tiimes on Sunday, and Monday, it stopped working. I thought maybe it was low on battery so I waited and let it charged up a bit. After 1/2 an hour of charging in my car while I was driving, it never turned back on. I'm going back to the store this afternoon and returning it. The Text to speech is cool but I'll try a different one and see if I like it better."

"Simple to use and set up..the test will come this summer when I go to Canada. Great value for the price and good first GPS to get..you want this one cause it tells you the street names unlike the Garmin 205 which does not tell you street names or so I have heard and that one is just for the lower 48.. Plus I got it for $50 less as it was on sale. Great for first time users like myself. Highly recommended."

"I liked my new Garmin right out of the box. Text to speech sometimes pronounces "Dr" as "Doctor" not "Drive". Weird huh? You'ld figure the programming would assume "Drive", it's a GPS unit after all. I also find that the map zooming and navigation is not so easy to use in navigation mode. If I want to zoom the map in alittle closer to get more detail, the device assumes I'm trying to add a way point or something and gets your nav all screwed up mid-trip. I'm kinda afraid to touch it in nav mode, but my geek son says I just don't understand what I'm doing.

Not bashing, overall it's a good unit."

What's great about it: easy to set up, speaks street names, easy to read and hear, small
What's not so great: not always accurate

"i love this gps. it is very easy to set up and start using it.
the screen is easy to read and see and the voice is clear. dont pay extra for a bigger screen unless you really need it. the 3.5 size is perfect and doesn't take up too much space on your windshield. i really like the recalculating feature when you miss your turn.
it did say the street name wrong a few times. i don't know if the construction in the area had anything to do with that.
there is a message screen that comes up everytime you start it that you have to agree to. it is kind of annoying that this keeps popping up.
overall, i am very pleased with this gps."

"The garmin nuvi 255 is an awesome gps. As soon I as I walked out of the store, within 5 min I had it ready to go. It is very very accurate. If you miss a turn, within a half second, it tells you when to turn to get back to the main road. I wish it came with a usb cable and home charger, but I went back to best buy and got an energizer plug&charge usb cable for ps3 that works just as good for 12.00. Plug into your computer to update maps or charge it. No need to buy expensive chargers. All in all, a great entry level gps. I should have gotten one years ago, as I am bad with directions."

What's great about it: Easy to use and great support

"The bad: sometimes this unit wants to have me make a U-turn when I could have just made a left turn, even in well developed areas (i.e. Chicago, IL, or Denver, CO). It's rare, but it happens. Also, please expect that fast developing areas won't be totally accurate without an exact address (i.e. Tucson, AZ). This is not unique to Garman products, it's just a fact of life.

The good: You can tell this unit to ignore U-turns to avoid some of the issues with local maps. In fact you can turn off lots of things you'd rather avoid, such as tolls or unpaved roads. Over all, this thing will get you where you want to go any way you care to get there, as long as you want to drive (it can pretend walking or biking, but it's just a guess as this is not what this product was designed for).

The best: Support! Recently while flying, I packed my mount badly and the clip became broken. I looked all over to buy a new one. As it turns out, you can get everything but the clip after-market. I called Garmin and they shipped me a new unit at no cost. No questions asked. Not just the clip either, they sent me the whole mounting unit at no cost to me at all.

I fully believe in Garmin support. They didn't care if it was my fault or not. They just fixed it ASAP on their own dime without question. Their point of view was: "Clip is broken under warranty? Okay, here is a new one." End of story.

Bottom line: It's not perfect but it does what it says it will do. And it does enough more than the lower units to make it worth the investment to me. Even if this unit might not be the best in the world -- which most of us can't afford anyway -- this is a very good product which is very well supported. To me, that means a lot. It's worth having if you travel. And I'm fully convinced in Garmin support."

Pretty Darn Good Entry Level GPS 01/14/2009

"I got this as a entry level/first time GPS Nav for my wife and myself. I did a lot of research and asking friends who had Garmin or Tom Tom. It was on sale @ $189.99 at one point. The very minute I walked out the store and open it up and turn it on....Boom....within 5 minutes, it was ready to go. I type in my home address...Boom. The new "Hotfix" is a great feature, as it take only seconds to calculate a route."

What's not so great: Restaraunts, towns and roads missing from the map

"My family & I were driving back from San Antonio to Corpus Christi. We tried to add a stop to the map, for dinner, and it couldn't find the DQ in the upcoming town. Actually the town of about 3,000 people was not even listed on the map. I also, took another trip through back roads, which the 255 didn't even show on the map unitl I got on the actual road. The 255 kept trying to send me back to its route until I got far enough off of it. I also typed in the name of an off the beaten path restaraunt, which is well known, and it was not even in the system either. I've seen a TomTom 130S in action on the same routes, and it was spot on. It also gave symbols of upcoming POIs, such as gas, food, etc.. I am seriously considering exchanging for the TomTom 330, which I was going to originally get."

"I took me 2 weeks to research all the Garmin nuvi models/series with its features, review ratings and pricing comparison. Although each individual models are unique, I finally concluded that this Nuvi 255 fits my requirements for all reasons. And this is my ever first taste of GPS technology. The most amazing thing I love with this gadget is its quickness to find signal in no time upon turning it ON. Very clear turn by turn command and quick recalculation when you miss your turn. Very accurate!!!"

"this is an amazing piece of technology. we live in the country and when we put it to its paces it held up strong. the location was found exactly and when we deviated from our route it put us back on track with a new map. the voice commands and the street names spoken were great. the size is not widesceen but that is an advantage because we have a small car. nice addition to the dash. love it."
