I'm really tired of this unit not playing some discs or 1/2 way or 3/4 of the way thru a movie, it freezes. Had my unit repaired by Sharp and also received a refurb replacement but the problem persists.
What's great about it: Looks nice
What's not so great: Not reliable

I thought I was getting a Blu-Ray player. However, since it plays about 1 in 8 Blu-rays its more of an overly priced DVD player. Took three times to install firmware and player still gets about 15 minutes into a blu-ray and starts acting all up. Since I got this nightmare machine in January I have only been able to see 3 blu-ray movies successfully. Considering I rent movies this is a pain of time and expense. Plus there is no marking the spot you leave off on a DVD so you have to find a scene if you stop and the power goes off. I hate this machine and have decided just unhook it and give it to a friend so he can watch DVD's. I will never buy a Sharp again.
What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Doesn't update, Doesn't play blu-ray
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is a great product for the price. It has an incredible picture and is very easy to set up and start to use out of the box. There are several complaints about this player not working, but it will work great after applying the updates with the newest firmware. All blu-ray players are the same, the newer movies will not work until the firmware is updated with the newest updates. I called Sharp and they said they are about to release new firmware so any existing bugs should be fixed and all the movies should be able to play after that. If you do all the updates and apply the firmware, this player will work great for you.
What's great about it: Great Value, Great Product, Incredible Picture, and easy to set up!
What's not so great: Need to update firmware immediately after buying

We have had our Sharp Blue Ray for about 1 year. This is actually the 2nd unit as the 1st one would not play any DVD/Blu-Ray. After getting the 2nd unit to work I thought all was fine.
The unit is terribly slow to start (I know there is a quick start/boot, but the docs recommend against that setting). The Blu-ray does work and we have played a few 1080p movies. Now the problem. Some of the newer movies needed a software upgrade. I followed the instructions, but the player will not read the USB memory stick with the upgrade files.
This was never tried on our original unit, so now that I know it is broke I asked Sharp for support. Sharp tells me the unit is out of warranty so I have to pay to have it fixed. This is garbage as we never had the opportunity to try the USB port in the past.
I am HIGHLY recommending people to stay away from SHARP. Product quality is poor. Support is poor.
What's great about it: Not much
What's not so great: Slow, breaks easily

We started with one unit on Christmas morning. Got one movie to play just fine. Could not get second, or third, or fourth ... you get the picture ... to work. We updated the firmware. Got a movie to load, then could never get the same movie to load again. Tried several movies ... sometimes would load, after 40 plus minutes of horsing around with it, and some would never load. After a week, we took the unit back to Best Buy, and they gladly exchanged it for another model. The second one was even worse. The firmware would never update, nor did we ever get a single movie to play on it. We tried this one for over two weeks and no luck whatsoever. After a lot of looking on Home Theater forums and such, we found we were not the only ones having this problem. Took the second "bad" unit back to Best Buy yesterday and exchanged it for an LG. So far so good on the LG. Movies we could never get to play on the Sharp had no problem whatsoever ... AND, and huge plus is that the port for the firmware updates is actually on the FRONT of the player as opposed to the back, which is where the Sharp's port was (not a very convenient design, especially for such an unreliable player). So, when we need to do updates it won't require the gyrations we had to go through to get to the back of the Sharp. Smart thinking by LG. The LG is also networkable, which is a nice feature.
As we went through all of the trouble with the 2 Sharp players, we began questioning whether or not Blu Ray was really "ready for prime time". Now that we have a well-functioning LG, we realize this is not the case. It is the Sharp player that is not ready for prime time, in my opinion. There are too many bugs that should be worked out. We're relatively savvy with this kind of thing, and I can't imagine my parents or my in-laws being able to deal with problems like we had.
However, huge Kudos to Best Buy for taking care of its customers. Sharp customer service was absolutely no help whatsoever.
What's great about it: Nothing - did have a good picture on the one or two movies we got it to play
What's not so great: Totally Unreliable
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I could not get the video to work with RCA or component cables, which was not a deal breaker since it worked with the HDMI cable. I have played two movies on the player and neither made it through without skipping and eventually stopping all together. DO NOT BUY THIS BD PLAYER.
What's great about it: Picture... when it works
What's not so great: completely unreliable, no video with component cables

I am on my second unit. After I started reading online. I realized this unit is not the way to go. It locks up and the second unit won't update the firmware. This things is the most frustrating piece of electronics I have ever bought.
What's great about it: I can't get this unit to work reliably
What's not so great: I am on my second player. I am going to try a new brand. This thing is buggy. Can't get disk to play.

All I can say is FREE. Bought a SHARP 46 HD flat panel...got the BLU-RAY free. Haven't had any issues with it. It plays movies what else do you need it to do. I'm sure there are better features on other players, but for the price who can complain?
What's great about it: Price...FREE!!!!!

Watched the Zohan Blu-Ray when I received this for Christmas. Wanted to watch CARS, but it would not play. Loaded new firmware, and CARS finally played. Two days later, I wanted to watch the Dark Knight, but the player will not open. Stand-by light flashes, I press power, and the white mode light on the front flashes for a while, (maybe 2 minutes) and then the unit turns off and back to flashing standby light. Pressing Open/Close produces the same result, flashing mode light, and then back to flashing standby light. The unit will not open or stay on.
What's great about it: Nice Picture while it worked
What's not so great: locked up, will not open.

Overall this is a very good Blu-ray player. I have an HD Sharp Aquos 42" tv that I hooked this to and the picture quality is amazing. I always hated SD players where the black look pixilated, but that doesn't happen with this player.
The downside is the USB memory stick needed for additional content and firmware updates. I didn't have one and had to purchase one, though it was very cheap. The other downside was the load time for one of the two movies I have tried so far. It loaded Eagle Eye in 2 mintues, but took over 10 minutes to load X-Files. I haven't installed the memory stick and updated the firmware yet, so I will update this review once I see if that improves the load times.
In the end I am very happy with this player and actually just recieved a sony blu-ray player as a gift today so can't wait to hook that up to my other HD tv.
What's great about it: Very easy to set up with just an HDMI cable
What's not so great: Didn't have a USB memory stick and had to purchase one to enjoy the BD Live features

The setup takes seconds with the HDMI cable; with incredible dept in ever frame of the film with unmatched on screen heads up display you can not go wrong with this blue ray player.
All you have to do is drop in the disk and the player send the signal to the TV you do not have to change the input the TV does it all.
With the fantastic price and stunning in-depth picture I would recommend this player to any person looking for quality at truly sound price.
What's great about it: Great picture with depth in every high def channel (hdmi 1080p)
What's not so great: Nothing bad to say.

People have written and said that a 1080i and a 1080p are worlds apart. PUT THE MYTH TO REST! I have a 52" RCA that a purchased about 3 years ago and I was sceptical about a blu ray wellllllllllllllllllll. I went on and purchased a decent player (this one) and reasoned I can always return this if it is not capatible. To my suprise and delight it was better than I suspected. This lowly rear projection HDTV rivals images on so call top LCD's granted I did pay over a grand for it but people and store sales persons said "you will have to upgrade your tv" the player automatically recognised the input and conformed it to my DVI input. (saw it as a HDMI) and the rest is blu ray history! the image is so clear and so precise I WON"T be buying an LCD anytime soon . Also if you have a good surround receiver and no optical input (which I do) use the 2 channel connections and your unit WILL decode the signal (in alll fairness though all of my speakers are custom made to work with my system. Conclusion Sharp awsome. incedently I have many high tech toys so I am not easliy impressed my fears wear were not justified.
What's great about it: easy to set up straight foward
What's not so great: loads a little slowly

This Product got Great reviews but has one flaw. The use of a coax line is unavailable, so you would have to update an outdated receiver to one that has an Optical line for your Surround sound theatre.
What's great about it: Great Value & Picture, ease setup.
What's not so great: no Coax for older Surround sound Receivers.

I brought this unit BD-HP21U less than a month ago I already had the Sony BDP-S350 which I purchase few days before I got the sharp . I did some compairing of the two units head to head test. I didn't see any difference in picture quaiity both superior specially playing regular DVDs. Load time the Sony beat out the Sharp only by a few seconds. Ease of use I will give that to Sharp. But what I did notice sound quaility the Sharp was better than the Sony.
