Awesome GPS!

What's great about it: Bluetooth is crystal clear, easy to use, love the bells & whistles
What's not so great: Phone book does not always load
"Replaced an older Garmin GPS with the 285W and so happy I did. Easy to set up and use. The old unit took forever to load maps and find satellites, I was usually half way to my destination and it still had not loaded. This unit is quick, crystal clear graphics and amazing sound that is not garbled. Also love the way that it reroutes quickly. Great unit at a great price!"

What's great about it: Easy to set up, good work
What's not so great: Can't listen music through bluetooth
"Bought this product as a present for my sister. Used a different before, she hated it, and it didn't work normal. Garmin nüvi 285W GPS works great, she loves it, and uses it a lot. So far, she didn't get lost, wherever she goes. Good product for a normal price."

What's great about it: Easy to use, love the speed limit indicator
What's not so great: I can not find a quick mute button, it takes a couple touches on the screen to get to the ute screen.
"The GPS has been very good so far. I have only used it about 10 times so far but it has been very accurate and easy to figure out. I really like the speed limit indicator since there never seems to be a speed limit sign when you're wondering what it is. I was also impressed withits accuracy, it usually changes within 10 feet of the sign."

Best Buy 5 Stars - Garmin 2 Stars

What's great about it: Great price, easy to use
What's not so great: Froze up, "side trips", MSN Direct availabilty, Garmin support
"I spent some time reviewing quite a few GPS units from 3 different manufacturers and Best Buy offered a great one day deal on this one. It had the Bluetooth, speaks to you, POIs, MSN Direct, etc. I was looking for. Once I had it I found out that MSN Direct was no longer being offered after Jan 2012. It was also only available in one city in Iowa of which I was not from. After I registered the unit online per Garmins instructions I inquired about the free map update at Garmin online. I received an e-mail back asking me for my proof of purchase. Although they had the correct date for my registration they needed to submit my receipt copy to a manager to get my map update approved. I gave up on that as I had vacation coming up. I left to go on the trip to try my Garmin out and It froze up on me twice travelling down the interstate. Had to power cycle the unit to get it working again. Two times it tried to take me off the interstate I was travelling on to a primary highway and then back to the interstate. There was no detour in sight. This interstate had been there for some time. I tried calling Garmin but was on infinite hold. When I got to where I was going I e-mailed Garmin again. After a couple emails they told me I had to call them. Yeah right. Just to get put on infinite hold again? I emailed them and asked them to call me. No response. I returned the defective GPS and will look at a competitor's unit that is sold at Best Buy also. Very disappointed in Garmin's support."

What's great about it: Price, memory, durable,
What's not so great: wont die so i can buy a new garmin!!!
"I purchased a garmin close to this one 4-5 years ago and mine still runs strong and fast. I worked in the construction field so needless to say its took more than normal abuse, long hours, switching it from work truck to my car every day...definatly reccomend a gps case to protect it...the only thing that happened to mine after 5 years is i had to replace the power cord..{25.00}.. And it works great....I wish it would break already so i have an excuse to buy a new black gloss one, with the speed limit signs...."

What's great about it: Easy to set up, great screen size for easy viewing
What's not so great: Haven't used it long enough to see any problems.
"Set up was a breeze. The screen size is just right so you can easily read the map at a glance while driving, but the unit itself is small enough to tuck away out of sight when you're not in your car. When I first set it up, it had me going in the opposite direction of my destination once, and the speaker had an issue once as well. It hasn't happened since, so I am hoping that it was just getting warmed up. Overall, great product and no more printing out online directions!"

Major Improvement Over Older Models
08/26/2009
By Michael1977

What's great about it: Speed limit notifications, doppler radar, flight status
What's not so great: MSN subscription fee
"I have owned a Garmin 660, 760, and a 780. I think the 285 is better than all three of my previous models. I like how ithe 285 displays your speed, arrival time, and the turn direction at the top left corner. It seems like the display is brighter than the other models and that makes it easier to see. The speaker sounds betterm and with the firmware upgrade the text to speech pronounces street names fine. The MSN is a good service. It does show traffic, doppler radar, news (which is worthless), gas prices, and flight status. I haven't tried the Bluetooth out yet. I didn't have good luck with people being able to hear me on my old devices so I am kind of hesitant to use it. Overall I think this is a great device. Some people have commented about fingerprints on the screen. I have yet to notice this, and it doesn't seem to be a problem."

Watch out if cord/MSN receiver goes bad!
08/02/2009
By tuckyuk

|
What's great about it: good enough as GPS
What's not so great: if the cord goes bad- watch out
"Had to pay to ship a bad cord/MSN receiver back to Garmin, despite warranty (in the fine print the consumer pays). Garmin will not send until they get "bad" one, so basically stuck with battery for 2+ weeks. THEN the fun starts- paid for lifetime MSN, but the account is specific to the cord/receiver. They prorated me (how do you prorate lifetime??) a credit and had to sign up with new cord. Never again (MSN) and would not recommend."

What's great about it: ease of use, speed limit warning, and PRICE!!
What's not so great: not sure yet. if any.
"Just got mine this morning and it is leap years over other brands I have used or owned. I had a Tomtom One XL and it gave me a red x in the middle of a trip, I tried to reset it and all that technical jazz and nothing worked. so I bought this on sale for a little over 200.00 and turned on for a test drive right out of Best Buys parking lot and it was awsome compared to the tomtom. The speed limit sign option was dead on even as i passed the change speed sign the gps changed too at the exact same time! So far just off the test drive to home then work, it has proven itself to me. Also the bluetooth is great i like the fact i can pick a hotel and call it just using my gps. It was awsome!! This over a Tomtom anyday. Havn't used the MSN yet but can't wait to see it in action on my 800 mile trip tommorrow going through the infamous congested New York City and then on to D.C."

Great Device
04/19/2009
By mjohn47

|
What's great about it: Built in traffic, Garmin reliability
What's not so great: Slow response time while typing
"The Garmin 285W is a handy GPS. With the Garmin name you know you are getting a good product and support. I've used Garmin GPS devices in aircraft and on the ground and would not go with anything but Garmin.
The 285W will reroute for traffic with a subscription to the MSN service. In my first few trips it advised me of minor slow downs ahead. There is an option to turn of the automatic rerouting that occurs which can be to your advantage. Originally the device wanted to take me about 20 miles out of my way to avoid a fifteen minute anticipated delay. I'm sure it'll come in handy more often when I'm back in New York.
Overall my only major complaint is that when typing in addresses and location names the touch screen is very slow.
Everything else, like the speed limit indicator, is dead on (only saw 1 error on a 500 mile trip) and the device is extremely accurate. Remember to update your maps and you should not have any problems finding anything you need."

Easy to use

What's great about it: Ease of use, great features
What's not so great: cannot play music
"Overall I am very happy with my Garmin. It was a breeze to set up and even easier to use. The screen is large and eay to see. However, because it is a touch screen it will get prints. The prints are easy to clean off and they do not effect clarity of the screen. The bluetooth for my phone works great. Taking advantage of the MSN subscription is well worth the price. It provides many additional features that I use on a daily basis. The only thing this GPS is missing is its inability to play music (is not iPod or Mp3 compatible). Again, I am very happy with my purchase and I would certainly purchase it again."

Its OK
03/30/2009
By ShaggyVW

What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: no lane assistance
"This unit I used to travel to OK from IN. The good was its ease of use but the bad was that the logic it used to navigate was inappropriate. It took me way out of the way using back roads and such and I was not happy with that part of it. Even after switching the preferences from fast to shortest it came up with same nav route. Another thing is was not good for was the fact the voice to text was kind of hard to hear and was sometimes a little too late giving directions. When it comes to lane selection I found myself almost missing turn offs during major city intersections. This was the most feature I did not like which is why I returned it for a nuvi 765 unit which has the lane assist and highway signs. I have yet to try it our but already I like it due to the FM transmitter built in that uses your car speakers for voice nav, the only downfall to this is that you can not listen to radio while listening to nav route. The bluetooth seems to be ok and tends to be a little soft on the other callers end. Overall I am much happier with the 765. Is it worth the extra 150? IMHO yes. The mounting system and lane assist will pay for itself as far as keeping where you need to be in large unknown cities."

Garmin 285 WT is the BEST!!!!
03/17/2009
By Hymiar

What's great about it: Everything: Blue-Tooth, MSN Direct, Precision, and Easy to use and upgrade (free).
What's not so great: Nothing
"The Garmin Nuvi 285-WT is an excellent product to own!!!! People who say that it is difficult and hard to manage are just plain stupid!!--stupid as heck. I bought this baby and connecting the Blue-Tooth setup was as easy as pie!! No complications at all. Just click and it will do the rest. The MSN-Direct is AWESOME!!!!! I'm in colorado right now and I have to admit, the traffic-report, weather forecast and EVEN Dopplar Radar Map, Stock Quotes, Local News and National News report, Eco-traveler, and so much more is AWESOME to have!!!!!!!!!!! You have to upgrade your 285WT to get the dopplar radar and flight delay report, but upgrading was VERY SIMPLE. CONNECT TO YOUR PC AND DOWNLOAD AND IT WILL DO THE REST!!!! I love this device, and you can't find another GPS system for the excellent value you pay for. Even a 3 year old could use this device and say it's awesome!!! I would super highly recommend purchasing this product. I use to own the 255-W, but i'm now hook on the 285WT."

Parts for Garmin 285w not found

What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: I can't find parts such as an extra power cable with the MSN antenna or the clip that holds the 284w to the mount
"I like the 285w however I can't find extra parts such as an extra power cable with the MSN antenna or the clip that holds the 284w to the mount the unit on Best Buy's web site. The 285w is not listed on Garmin's web site at all! I fly between two cities and do not want to carry all the cables and clips with me each time I fly. I need these parts and not being to find them is the only reason I would not recommend this item to a friend."

Good GPS Good Value

What's great about it: Ease of setup and use, good display, good value for sale price
What's not so great: Some TTS voices speak too fast
"Good GPS unit for those wanting more that the basic units. Large bright display, good graphics, anti-glare screen, fast to acquire satellites, and lots of features. Have not tried MSNDirect, yet, but will soon. Have read some complaints about finger smudges on screen but it is no different than my laptop sceen and the smudges are not noticeable when unit is operating. Spoken street names is a nice feature but you have to select a TTS voice to enable this feature. Wife has a Nuvi 255W and this one is every bit as good with more features."
