What's great about it: The picture quality is great, even when zoomed out. Night shots are surrprisingly great
What's not so great: you cant move much when taking the photo. Camera easily blurs.
I use this camera for jounalism purposes. When I write go to news scenes, this camera is light enough to carry around as I amd working. The zoom and night picture quality is great. The video feature is just as good as a video camera! I have not even used the owners manual. All of the basic features are clear. The morea advanced uses require the manual but just to get started, you may not need it. It comes with a flash; however, the great thing is, this one as the ability to add one on if you would like to. Also, the face-finder, blink indicator, and the smile feature all work great! Def. concider paying a little more over the other camera just to get one that work this well. The price is un-beatable for what you are getting. its virtually the same thing that all those newspaper reporters are carrying around fore HALF THE PRICE! I work with those reporters so I know they overpaid for what they got.

What's great about it: Priced right, looks great and for the most part easy to use
What's not so great: short neck strap, owner manual is not helpful
Allow me to say I know little about cameras. I upgraded from a 5mp Kodak which I had for years and generally liked but it was no good in low light and shooting on the fly. Point and shoot was more like point...wait for it..shoot. halfway through a vaca in on the west coast I stopped in and bout the Powershot. I was immediatley blown away by the camera's zoom and ease of use. 400 pics later I had still not read the owners manual and worked with the auto setting. Like most people I was concerned about the weight (it is pretty heavy) and the lens cap is going to get lost eventually. It has a little clip to connect to the strap but I dropped it 4 times in the first day. I like a longer neck strap that I can shove the camera under an arm and pull up to shoot a pic when I get the mood. With that in mind the neck strap was not very forgiving to a fat man. I tried to find another one but have to find one I like. I took pictures at dusk and at night when with my kodak I never would have. The pictures turned out awesome. Now I like the bulkiness of the camera..as it makes me feel like I spent 800 dollars on an SLR without having the wallet guilt. This is a drawback if you want something you can shove in a pocket and leave till you need it. I bought a wide angle lens because the salesman demo'd it for me and I was blown away. Now for the professional I can see how the advanced settings could leave one with wanting more but for a person such as myself I love the quality of the pictures and had no problems downloading them and I didnt throw out half the pictures do to blur or poor light. I did notice something that may or may not have been part of the camera. I tend to point and shoot as the saying goes. I dont always spend alot of time focusing. In the display screen the picture looked blurry and unfocused but later on I opened the picture in the camera and on my laptop and they looked crisp and clear. I may have been lucky but as I said I tend to do this and with this camera they all turned out great. I did have a few pictures that didnt turn out right and most of those were motion pictures that I snapped on the fly.
The only other drawback is the owners manual. It was horrible, after reading it I was left thinking I knew more when I didnt read it. Honestly I need to learn more about cameras in general so this is a big factor in not understanding. I feel they could have put in a few more paragraphs on the use of the shutter speed and ISO settings. I do have a last note about the batteries. My kodak ate AA batteries like they had stock in energizer, and the batteries that came with this camera lasted me 3 days of on and off photos and even just turning the camera on to play with the menus and lcd display. The only other problems I had with other cameras is that they took a special battery that was not as easy to find in all areas and I couldnt imagine carrying a camera around that I could not walk into a convienience store and just buy some new ones. This could be a problem if your like me and dont prep to take the camera out. I tend to prcrastinate and run out the door with the camera bag.
Overall I love the camera and if you are like me and want an upgrade and have read this and relate to some of my rantings then this is the camera for you. If not sony and nikkon make comparable cameras that are in the same price range and may work better for you.

What's great about it: Light weight, i dont know why people say that it is heavy... its light weight even with the 4 AA batteries inside.
What's not so great: I cant find a not so great thing about it...i dont think there is
The pictures that i uploaded where taken with full zoom, so you can see the brightness and clear detail that the camera has even fully zoomed !!
AND thats not the highest picture quality, it is medium.

What's great about it: Best overall on the market
What's not so great: Nothing comes to mind
I belive this is the best camera in its class that you can get. It has two features that are very important to me that most others in this class do not. 1 It takes AA batteries. If you are on a trip some where and your batteries run out you can buy replacements almost anywhere, I can not empisize what a huge advantage this is. 2. This camera has a hot shoe for an other flash. You can buy a canon flash to put on top of it that will give you far more power to do things like taking photos of groups or things farther away but most importantly you can take bounce flash photos with it. If you have ever tried taking a photo head on with a flash and tried taking the same photo using a bounce flash there is such a difference it is unbeliveablely better. Most of the time when you take a photo with a flash head on the flash will make the photo look flat and somtimes washed out. With a bounce flash the photo will look far more nateral.

What's great about it: Almost Everything
What's not so great: A bit bulky, but worth it for features!
This camera is wonderful. It takes vivid pictures in any kind of light, even low lighting. You'll want to use lithium AA batteries for the best performance, instead of the regular alkalines. The video mode works well - definitely the best video mode out of any primarily still camera (excluding SLR). The menus are laid out well and simple to navigate. You can get great pics out of the auto modes (which I hardly use), and the pics from the manual modes are excellent (if you take the time to learn how to use them properly). Definitely a great back-up for my Digital SLR.

What's great about it: The zoom is great.
What's not so great: Weight and having to press down button half way, takes camera a while to focus, by that time your image is gone.
I looked at a lot of cameras before buying this one, after getting it
I've noticed some negative features. First off the weight, its to heavy to hold still, and when you try to focus and take picture, you have to hold down the button half way for camera to focus in, which is not a quick procedure. I love taking pics of birds and they are gone by the time the camera focuses in on them.

What's great about it: It is one of the only high-end point and shoots with a hotshoe mount. Also the zoom is virtually silent at 800 iso
What's not so great: i could only buy one
So far i have taken many pictures with this camera and none fail to impress. I own three other cameras, A Polaroid a250, an Olmypus Fe 370, and a Canon film Sure shot Zoom-S. But this camera by far has more megapixels, zoom, and features. I can print pictures at 300 dpi and still have them come out 8in x 10in. The total zoom is 80x which you can't beat for the price (i purchased it on sale for $350). The lens hood is very easy to store and use on the camera, and i have no complaints. If you are looking for a slr quality camera this is your best option. I have had many people come up to me and ask what telephoto lens i was using, and told the that it was a point and shoot. Alll in all this camera is perfect for anyone who wants superior image quality and imense super zoom.

What's great about it: 20X Zoom, Video
What's not so great: Overexposed Pictures (blown highlights), bad distortion with wide angle shots
For those of you looking for a superzoom P&S, I would look elsewhere. Outdoor shots are overexposed with blown highlights (anything that is white has a washed out look). Once your picture is overexposed, it is very difficult to correct with Photoshop. The camera does focus very quick with using outdoors but hunts a bit with low light shots. Distortion is bad with wide angle shots (28mm to 35mm). Your much better off with one of the Panny superzooms or better yet, a DLSR.

What's great about it: Hot shoe, Picture Quality, Zoom, Video Quality
What's not so great: No remote.
I bought this for my beginner's camera since I've just taken photography up as a hobby. This camera was recommended to me by a friend and he did not steer me wrong!
The photo quality is outstanding for the price. The zoom is excellent and the video's sound is crisp. During a trip to the local track the video sound did not break up, even when the nitro cars came on and I was right next to the burnout box. The colors always come out brilliantly as do raindrops and macro shots. The macro shots are exceptionallly clear and detailed in my opinion.
The only bad part is there is no remote available. I'm sure some will plug in but I'm afraid to push the button and burn something out. According to Canon's website there is not one available.
As far as batteries go purchase a set of Kodak niMh rechargables. They'll last forever compared to standard alkaline batteries.

What's great about it: 20X Zoom, Great Picture Quality, Takes Great Video, uses AA batteries
What's not so great: lens cap easy to lose, you have to lift up the flash to use it
I've owned this camera for about 2 months now, and I'm very pleased with it. There are so many features and I'm still learning about them, the owners manual is quite thick and not too user friendly. However, the image quality is great and there are many types of manual and programmed exposure settings that you can try out.
The camera is easy to grip and hold and it's not really that heavy to me. I use it and keep it around my neck for hours and it doesn't bother me. I love how you can be taking a picture and you can just press the movie button and it will start recording and you can also zoom in while you're recording video on this camera.
I was going to buy the Nikon P90 but a very knowledgeable and helpful Best Buy salesperson highly recommended this Canon over the Nikon and I'm glad I took her advice.
I highly recommend this camera, even to a beginner photographer like myself. Just keep reading the manual and experiment with the different settings and you'll be taking awesome pictures sooner than you think :)

What's great about it: Everything: Simple to use, Takes GREAT pictures
What's not so great: It's somewhat heavy
I purchased the Nikon P90 and within the first few hours of owning it, i was completely dissatisfied. Worst camera, which is what led me to purchase this canon. Best choice i've ever made. Takes clear pictures, is very simple to use. Only drawback is that it is a little on the heavy side, but it is worth the weight. I previously had a Canon, and am glad i purchased another one. Very pleased with my product.

What's great about it: many features, options
What's not so great: manual, overall quality, overall picture quality
Waited 6 months to write review...glad I did, my opinion has changed slightly. I still think the camera is loaded with features and a decent value. With some new competition out there, I think there might be better deals on similiar cameras from Nikon, Sony, etc. The zoom was the best you could get for under $400 for a camera smaller than SLR at the time. Picture quality is good, you'll be hard pressed to take a very bad picture, but you will have to work hard and take too many photos to get that one outstanding photo. It's sad, I've read this is other reviews, but I have older 2.0 meg cameras that can take comparable or better pictures....go figure. I like the flash hot shoe, the movable viewing screen which can also act as a protector, and the optical zoom. Picture quality in digital zoom sucks so why do they bother. Owners manual pretty much sucks, too vague and not intuitive. Materials quality sucks....rubberized coating on body has already peeled off and we keep camera in camera bag. Lens cap fell off and was lost, you can't keep that cheezy thing on...junk. Lens difusor which I really liked, fell off and was lost while kayaking...bumped it with my hand ever so slightly, gone forever. It should not have come off as easily as it did. You could do worse, but I guess I was hoping for better out of a $400 camera. I waited 2 years to upgrade, and maybe I should have waited a while longer. I also believe a 3 inch screen would have been nicer on a camera of this stature. I will say the video mode is nice and works well. I've captured surprisingly good sports shots of lacrosse in video mode and so easy to switch between regular shots and video, that was well designed. One last negative, in 6 months the paint telling you what each button does has begun to wear off. I'm not looking forward to reading the manual everytime I forget which button to push for a feature. I own a 15 year old SLR and the body on that is 100% compared to this poorly made product. If they want to use poor materials on the $99 cameras, I'm OK with that. But if someone is paying closer to $500 for a point and shoot camera, don't use shoddy materials. If you need the zoom, hot shoe, traditional view finder, tilting view screen, manual settings, video mode, and don't want to bring the full sized camera and lenses, this camera might fill a narrow width of users like myself. And, if the picture quality was better, I wouldn't nit pick some of the smaller stuff. But, bottom line, a 10 Meg camera, with Canon optics, in the $400 Range should take outstanding pictures. I believe this camera falls just slightly short. Out of 2,000 photos, I have maybe 5 that I'd be proud of and the rest are just OK, not bad, but just average. In comparison, when I was 12, I bought a bottom of the line strictly manual SLR which could take better quality photos. Likewise, our 5 year old Nikon 2 Meg camera took excellent quality photos. Why is Canon moving backwards on the spectrum instead of forward?

What's great about it: Zoom quality good, not very heavy
What's not so great: Hard to figure out settings if not used to better quality cameras
I took this camera on a trip to Africa trusting that it would capture my trip as best as possible. The pictures turned out wonderful and the zoom works great. Images are sharp and clear. I am used to cheap digital cameras and disposable cameras, so the settings are difficult to figure out at first. The camera looked overwhelming but I got used to it after some practice. The focus is sometimes slow on the video mode and when zooming, but not a horrible problem. For its price, it's not a bad deal!

What's great about it: 20x zoom, outdoor photos
What's not so great: indoor photos, flash, weight, small lcd
I am a camera enthusiast and this is my 3rd megazoom digital camera. I couldn't decide on this Canon and waiting on the release of the Sony DSC-HX1. I researched everything I could find and this Canon was always rated at the top of megazooms on the professional review sites. The Best Buy site had mixed reviews - people either really loved or really hated this camera. My gut feeling was to wait on the Sony since I have ALWAYS had excellent results with Sony cams. But I needed a camera sooner than the Sony release so I bought the Canon and it was a huge mistake. I owned and operated the camera for 3 weeks and returned it. The outdoor photos are incredible but the indoor photos are absolutely horrible, incredibly grainy. I experimented with all the settings and the results were always the same. Also, the camera is extremely heavy and it's great that the lcd rotates (especially great for self portraits) but the screen is very small in comparison to other cameras. Needless to say, I am very disappointed in this camera. I had high expectations considering the professional reviews (cnet, dpreview, etc) but should have listened to the nay-sayers on the Best Buy site. And I must give kudos to Best Buy for allowing me to return this camera. This is an excellent camera if you will only be taking outdoor photos but the most horrible choice for indoor shots. Now I'm off to purchase the new Sony.

What's great about it: Great Price when I bought it. The closest then to a SLR, without the price
What's not so great: I have big hands and removing the SD memory card is hard.
My Canon PowerShot A630 finally broke after I dropped it. I had a choice between a Nikon and Canon. After reading a lot of reviews this camera came out way ahead. Being I already owed a Canon setup was easy. I set the camera up without a preview (of pictures taken) which lets me take continuse shots. The Camera is fast and takes great pictures. My wife loves it because she can set it to Auto and the camera does the rest (ISO and F-stop are auto). The camera is a little heavy, like a SLR. I gave this camera a 4 star for ease of use because I have big hands and getting the memory card out is a little tuff for me. My wife has no problems removing the memory card. If you can't afford a SLR then this is the camera for you.

What's great about it: zoom, picture quality
What's not so great: bulky, non-rechargable
I was going to buy the Nikon P90 at first, and the photos were really grainy, with flash, without flash, and zoomed. and I was playing with this camera, and loved it! although it takes batteries (ugh) it's a really good camera. takes really good, fast photos, anywhere, anytime. and it's great for beginners! the screen flips and turns so it's not scratched and/or you can watch yourself take pictures/videos easily. the video quality is great! so far, I love this camera. :)

What's great about it: Hot shoe for extra flash, 28-300 lense, excellent pics, Excellent first shot delay, and it is soooo easy to use!
What's not so great: Nothing, this is the best camera for the price!
I can't get over how great this camera is for the money. Everything you'd want in a SLR, but, it's a point and shoot. It fit right into my pocketbook and I am very happy with it. The pictures are clear and color excellent, The first shot delay was a concern since most of the point and shoots have quite a delay and this one DOES NOT. It is fabulous!

What's great about it: well built like a real camera (like an Eos slr)
What's not so great: price a little high but still worth it to get a somthing thats not a toy
Manual festures of an SLR, same solid feel with 28-560 mm zoom try that with an Slr and you will need 3 lenes and about 4000 dollars to get the same coverage as this unit. Canon did not skimp on quality anywhere producing this cam. Great job Canon...keep on building products that happily suprise people when their amazed at cameras capabilitys.
